Review--Magic on the Hunt by Devon Monk

"In theory, I could call on enough magic to burn this place to the ground. But the price I'd have to pay would be as big as the spell I cast, and then I'd be nothing but ashes and burnt bones."

There aren't many girls who can say they've gone into the realm of death and lived to tell the tale. But to restore her lover Zayvion's soul, Allison Beckstrom had to pay a bitter price--and things are about to get worse...

It turns out the leaders of the Authority, the council that decides what can--and can't--be done with magic, is being held hostage. But when the trail leads Allie and Zayvion to the secret prison the Authority locks away magical criminals who are too dangerous to be held anywhere else, they find more than they bargained for. An undead magic user has possessed of of the prisoners, and he wants his freedom--and then some. Now Allie and Zayvion are the first line of defense against the chaos he's about to unleash on the city of Portland...

Devon Monk's Magic on the Hunt picks up the action with Allie and crew right away. After a very brief quite moment, Allie and Zay are already ambushed by the enemy and the fun begins. Without so much as a week to rest and relax Allie and Zay are trying to track down a very dangerous and powerful magic user. Only he's supposed to be dead. It seems no one in this world stays dead once they're killed!

Allie and Zay's relationship is one of the most intense ones that I've read and I love it! One minute things are calm and the next a storm is brewing between them. Being Soul Complements will do that you I guess. There's a lot of tension in this one. For awhile it seems like Allie will be tracking down the one who attacked her and Zay before things explode and there's even more chaos that I anticipated!

Magic on the Hunt is rather well paced. Having finished, I feel like it was decently fast, while reading I just found it to be decent. Decent being very positive in my mind. Really can't think of the right adjective that I want to use. But I liked it! And there were a good mix of down time moments in amidst the chaos, but the characters were still tense since the chaos hadn't come to an end yet.

The rules that Allie and her friends have been following set by the Authority are crumbling. The Authority is crumbling, what with its leader being kidnapped. I am very interested in seeing how everything is going to turn out for Allie in the very end of the series. Hopefully she and Zay will get their well-deserved rest.

Overall rating 4.5/5 stars!

Thankfully Magic on the Line comes out this November so there's only a slight wait--yet still long--for more of Allie and her friends!
