ARC Review--Vicious Moon by Lee Roland (Blog Tour)

Ex-soldier and earth witch Nyx Ianira is working as a PI in San Francisco when she sees the last thing she ever wants to see: the Sisters of Justice—the mysterious earth witch police force. A Triad of Sisters usually means an execution mission, but the Sisters’ only goal is to capture and escort Nyx across the country.

Nyx is badly needed back in Twitch Crossing, Georgia, the place she ran away from ten years ago to escape the stiff rules and duties of being a true witch. She wanted a life of her own. Now she’s being dragged back to her swampy hometown because another life is in danger: Her little sister is missing, and Nyx is the only one who can track her down in Duivel, Missouri.

But the key to finding her may lie with dark and tempting Etienne—a sinister criminal with a fearsome reputation, a ruthless attitude, and a total immunity to magic....

I received this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review for the Vicious Moon Blog Tour hosted by Paranormal Cravings. I was in no way compensated for this review.

Vicious Moon is the third novel in the Earth Witches series by Lee Roland and centers on yet another new heroine! I am definitely enjoying that part of the series since it's how I am fashioning my own. This one actually takes place two years after Vengeance Moon, Madeline is still around and she too makes an appearance but Cassandra was otherwise occupied and didn't make any page time.

Our heroine Nyx has made a good life for herself, she's done quite the bit of butt kicking being in the army and more and now runs her own PI business. After a case goes totally haywire, she is caught by a Triad of Sisters, not knowing what she could've done wrong, she tries to run but it's futile. The Sisters return her to her home in Twitch Crossing, Georgia to her grandmother when she then learns her younger sister has gone missing. It's now up to Nyx to find her before the worst should happen.

Naturally, Nyx is led to Duivel, Missouri, the strange little town that houses a demon and just keeps getting stranger and stranger. She is staying with the witch who her sister stayed with, Laudine, but the witch seems very wary of Nyx. She's kind of secretive too, but Nyx can't put her finger on the why of that reason.

During her search she meets Etienne, the man who is immune to magic and works for the demon, Aiakos. He has a team of men at his beck and call who practically run the town when it comes to anything magic like. He's definitely the man of mystery to Nyx and powerfully dangerous, but yet he never once seems to threaten her or have cause to harm her. The tension between these two runs thick since there's a strong attraction between them, yet Etienne isn't a fanboy of witches. In fact, he kind of despises them, but doesn't go around burning them at the stake or anything!

The story to this was one was very good! There's lots of secrets to be had between Nyx and Etienne. They both have trouble with trusting people at times, yet they seem to find some kind of balance with one another. Although that tends to get shattered just when things look hopeful! Typical Urban Fantasy! What little romance they had together was pretty hot! They have that chemistry just simmering between them and when they finally submit to their feelings, it's explosive!

I still feel somewhat lost to the whole Mother Earth part of the series. I get that she is like the Mother of all things on planet Earth, but I guess its the connection to the witches and the demon, Aiakos who is her prisoner and "toy" that I feel lost to. I keep wondering what the big picture is within this story buildup as it was there in all three books to date. It's just a minor thing, but when reading I tend to get some of it, but after stepping back I still feel confused. I guess I put more focus into the heroine's story rather than trying to understand some of the background info or I just can't seem to grasp what's going on. Another part may be due to it having been so long since I read book 1 where things are usually explained a bit more clearly the first go around.

But still, Vicious Moon was an incredibly awesome story. The ending leaves you wondering with a few notes and details and I almost vaguely wonder if Nyx would return with another book or play a minor role in the next book. She had just learned some interesting details to her past and it makes you wonder, why drop that bomb at the end of the book? But I still can't say if that information would be important to the overall story arc of the series? Hard to tell. Otherwise, the ending was pretty satisfying for an Urban Fantasy read. I definitely look forward to seeing what else Lee will cook up for the remainder of the series!
