Review--Up from the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

There’s always one more grave to dig.

Lately, life has been unnaturally calm for vampires Cat Crawfield and her husband Bones. They should have known better than to relax their guard, because a shocking revelation sends them back into action to stop an all-out war…

A rogue CIA agent is involved in horrifying secret activities that threaten to raise tensions between humans and the undead to dangerous heights. Now Cat and Bones are in a race against time to save their friends from a fate worse than death…because the more secrets they unravel, the deadlier the consequences. And if they fail, their lives—and those of everyone they hold dear— will be hovering on the edge of the grave.

Is this really the end?! I feel so sad! For years I've enjoyed Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series! It totally blew me away when I was still trying to discover new paranormal reads! I was even able to re-read the first book at a time! Up from the Grave is our chance to say goodbye to our beloved Cat and Bones, but I am hoping it's not permanent. I mean there are always short stories and hopefully someday we'll all get that Ian book! Personally I've been dying for an Ian book since she started her Night Huntress World series! Maybe he and Annette could hook up! Haha, not sure if that's possible though!

Anyway, as well all know this is our last hurrah with Cat and Bones and boy do they go out in style! Never has a series kept me so enthralled before! There are always so many twists and turns and surprises along the way, my heart was racing nearly the entire time of reading this book! Jeaniene really knows how to captivate her readers!

Cat and Bones are trying to find their friends, Tate, Juan, Dave and Cooper, who have been missing for some time. Madigan, the man that took over her uncle's job is of no help. Since he's basically our Public Enemy Number 1. In fact, he's even got his own dastardly deeds planned to get to Cat, but Cat needs him in order to find her friends and what we have is a good old fashion standoff. Who will "shoot" first?

Since it's been way too long since I was last in Cat's world, dealing with her problems and not seeing things in Vlad and Kira's going-ons, it took a bit of remembering what's already happened. But luckily, there's nothing critical to remember. The past events are past, and they only get mentioned in passing. Although, the short story Home for the Holidays, does provide the answer to a mere mentioning of a particular character. I won't say it since it's a spoiler for the novella, although I do recommend reading that one because hello, more Cat and Bones before we say goodbye!

There's still some sparks flying between Cant and Bones. That never seems to stop, even with them being married. Truly, this has to be my favorite series where the characters are married and they still have so many adventures. Marriage definitely doesn't dull things in this world! And while there wasn't a chapter to top good ol 32, I was chuckling at the irony that one of the romantic moments happened in Chapter 23, probably just coincidence, but still, I got a chuckle out of it! Mostly because I'm a geek!

I enjoyed seeing all the other characters we've met throughout the series; Denise and Spade, Kira and Mencheres, Vlad and Kira, Ian--sigh--and even Timmie. Annette and Justina also appear at the epilogue, so it was a very nice way of saying goodbye to everyone. Our heroes even visited Denise and Spade in St. Louis, which still amazes me that Jeaniene chose my city. And yet, sob, it doesn't appear in her tour list.

While this is the end of Cat and Bones, I couldn't think of a better ending for them. Mostly because they're not my characters, I don't do fan fiction well myself! But even imagined otherwise, I couldn't think of a better way to say goodbye to these beloved characters. Let's just hope that it's not a final goodbye. There's always short stories and novellas and hopefully that Ian book! Hint-hint, Jeaniene! ;)

  2. I'm so sad it's the end but I'm glad it's that good. I'm anxious I confess because I'm afraid to not like it and well it's the last one. But I really can't wait to get into it as well.

  3. Man, I love this series! I can't believe it's ending either. I could totally see an Ian story. I agree about the romance and adventures still being kept up well even after they were married. Great review! Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

  4. I liked this one, butit didn't wow me. Although, I haven't been wowed since book 4. I'm glad they got their HEA and we got some closure for the series.

I was a little disappointed by the lack for steamy scenes.
