Review--The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey

The riveting follow-up to the New York Times bestselling The 5th Wave, hailed by Justin Cronin as “wildly entertaining.”

How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.

Rick Yancey's The Infinite Sea is the highly anticipated sequel to The 5th Wave and it was truly remarkable! A 1-day read, peeps! I couldn't put it down...even when I had to, I resented that fact!

Soooo much happened in The 5th Wave and I read that like a hundred reads ago, so my memory was a little sketchy, yet I was able to jump right back into the story without many fumbles. We quickly learn that the Others, bad guys, whatever we like to call them, have a new method to exterminate the remaining humans and it's a doozie of a method too!

Cassie, Ben, and the other children rescued from the fallout from the end last go around are on the run. Cassie has successfully rescued her brother, but he's different now. A fact we could see last time as well. They take refuge in an abandoned hotel while they wait to see if Evan comes for Cassie as promised and to think of their next move as well. There's no definite plan other than keeping away from the bad guys.

It's hard to say how much time passed in this one. It doesn't really feel like much, but yet, we learned soooo much at the same time. Told through different point of views, like previously, we even get two new perspectives; Ringer and Poundcake.

This one kind of lacks in some of the excitement and thrills that we had in The 5th Wave, but yet it was still a really good read. It was more a learning experience in some sense as we learn more about the enemy and another new character, Grace walks onto the scene and has a connection with Evan.

There wasn't much room for romance in this one, where we had the budding romance between Cassie and Evan last go around. Here, there's really not much of anything. Before I thought we even had some conflicting feelings between Evan and Ben, but it's hard to say if that still stands now.

Ringer had quite a long section towards the end of the book, one that really changes things in some sense and gives us new meaning to the story at large! I was definitely thrown by that number! Which makes trying to predict the outcome for the next book even more hard!

I will have to say that the final chapter--a new perspective--was what totally made the book all right for me! I was afraid, yet again, I would be without answers regarding certain characters, but that ending put everything into light! Of course, there's still questions regarding another character, but it wasn't so much a burning need as this one was!

All in all, a really good read! I missed some of the spine-tingling suspense we had from the first book, but what we had here was still rather good, just not spine-tingling. I look forward to reading more of this series because it's just to good to pass up! And plus, there are still more answers to be found and I am dying to know all!

Overall Rating 4/5 stars

  1. I'm really looking forward to reading this one too! I STILL haven't decided if I'm heading to Naperville tomorrow for this event - mainly because my husband just got back from being out of town for a week and I feel a little guilty about ditching him for the night. :-) I'll let you know as soon as I decide for sure, though.

  2. I've been wanting to read this series for awhile, but just haven't gotten around to it. It sounds really amazing though! It seems a little weird that there was romance in book one and the second just kind of forgot about it. I hate when random stuff like that happens. Thanks for the review!

  3. Sounds like this one's focus is the emotional aspect of the characters. I'm also happy that you were able to hop right into the story, I was afraid that I would forget much of what happened because of all of the characters.

I hope you enjoy seeing Mr. Yancey himself!

  4. I need to marathon these books soon! This sounds like a solid sequel and that's where series usually disappoint me. :)
