ARC Review--Black Spring by Christina Henry

A former Agent of death, Madeline Black now has everything to live for, most importantly, her unborn child. But Chicago has become ground zero in a struggle between ancient creatures, and only Maddy can stop the carnage…

The mayor of Chicago has announced a plan to round up the city’s supernatural beings and put them in camps. With her due date looming, Maddy’s best move would be to lay low for a while. But not everyone is willing to respect her privacy. Hounded by tentacled monsters, a rogue shapeshifter, and a tenacious blogger, Maddy turns to her most powerful ally, her uncle Daharan, only to find him missing.

Just when it seems like things can’t get any worse, Maddy gets an invitation in the mail—to Lucifer’s wedding. Turns out everyone has been invited, friends and enemies alike. And with that kind of guest list, it’s highly unlikely there will be a happily ever after.

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, I was in no way compensated for this review.

Black Spring is what I believe is the final book in Christina Henry's Black Wings series and it was an addicting read! The entire series has been addicting, one that really packs a punch in the emotions department. There's been laughs, tears and heartache, gut-wrenching suspense and oh so much more! While (at the time of this review) I haven't heard anything about this series being officially over, it definitely felt like an ending, the goodbye we always know is coming with favorite series. And I must say that Christina does it extraordinarily!

Maddy's life has been nothing but easy since the beginning of the series. Such a mess, yet she's always managed to get through each and every trial. I mean, a part of me is still huddling in a corner bawling my eyes out over Gabriel, but Maddy's right there in the thick of things trying to protect her and Gabriel's unborn child. She's got quite a bit of trouble this time around, a shapeshifter is wreaking havoc on her life, Jack the blogger is still trying to gather all her secrets to post on his blog, new rules are being implemented for supernaturals in Chicago, and then there's Lucifer's wedding that she simply must attend. Must, as in do or die.

That's quite a lot on Maddy's plate right there and she does this all while pregnant! She is definitely one tough chick. Plus, she has amazing friends at her side, Jude, Beezel, Nathaniel, and more, but I won't reveal spoilers by saying who! And can I just say wow! NATHANIEL! Never have I thought that I would fall for him. He was a total d-head when we first met him in the beginning, and never once, not once, did I think this guy would amount to something. Never once, did I think he could turn over a new leaf and be there for Maddy. This is a time when I am ever so glad to be wrong! Nathaniel's transformation was definitely one of my favorite parts in these last few books. Of course, that scene from the last book with you-know-who is definitely at the top of the list for these latter books too!

Things get dicey at Luicfer's place before the wedding takes place and needless to say, Maddy's in hot water for that one. The danger really ante ups at that point and it's a run for your life, save yourself kind of thing. But as always, Maddy's friends have got her back. There was a good mystery twist in that debacle that was enjoyable as well.

Overall, I have to say that this one was freaking amazing read! All the loose ends were tied up in this one. There's not one that I can recall that hadn't been squared away and it leaves you with a very nice and happy feeling. More fodder to the knowledge that this is likely the final book of the series (that and Christina mentions her new series on her blog!). This has been a thrilling Urban Fantasy read and I am happier to have read it! I love knowing that all these characters I've come to care about are set for their HEA endings. I smile now closing the book's cover and begin the impatient wait for Christina's next series...who's with me?!

  3. I so love this series, I really don't want it to end. Like Nathaniel? I'll hold judgement until I read the book. Although he has been improving and when working together, they are very powerful.

  5. Goodness, you make me want to read this series with the first 2 sentences of your review alone. After reading it all though I'm even more anxious to read it... oooh, I wonder if my Library offers it on their ebook lending area. Will have to check. :)
