Review--Daughter of Earth and Sky by Kaitlin Bevis

Some vows can never be broken, especially with you've recently found out you're a goddess.

In the flick of a eyelash Persephone has gone from being a high school junior in Athens, Georgia to the wife of Hades, god of the Underworld. Under his platonic protection, she's waiting for springtime, when Boreas, the sinister god of winter, will stop stalking her.

But even Hades can't keep Boreas and his minions from threatening her. Finally she escaped back to the world of the living. Maybe she can just go back to normal--and forget that she's fallen in love with Hades.

She's wrong.

Thanatos--a friend from the Underworld, has betrayed her. Persephone can't tell anyone about Thanatos' betrayal, and it drives a wedge between her and Hades.

And then there's Aphrodite, the gorgeous goddess who was born among the ocean waves with more charm than she can control. Persephone's dearest ally, Melissa, is furious and jealous when Aphrodite starts winning Persephone's friendship. Persephone turns to a human boy for friendship. But will their relationship put him in danger?

Persephone must choose between her human life and her responsibilities as a goddess. If she doesn't, she could lose that life and Hades, too.

But either way, she may not survive her father's schemes. After all, she's Zeus's daughter.

I received this ebook from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, I was in no way compensated for this review.

Kaitlin Bevis's Daughter of Earth and Sky picks up pretty much where we left off with Persephone. This was yet another intriguing read, what still puzzles me though is not knowing which parts of Greek mythology are not in the Greek mythology in this world. For Aphrodite is not a Greek goddess in this reality. It's weird and sometimes frustrating, but at the same time I love how Kaitlin incorporates it into the story!

Some time has gone by and during that Persephone has been trying to find a way to let Hades know of Thanatos' betrayal. Needless to say, she hasn't made much progress. Swearing not to tell anyone what Thanatos had done really makes it hard. But that's only the beginning of her problems in this one. Very early on, Persephone meets her new "sister" Aphrodite. She literally just popped into existence not that long ago. And while she appears to be Persephone's age, she still has a lot to learn about blending in as a human.

Persephone starts to withdraw from the people she loves. She's mad at her mother for the lies she's told her all these years, she fights with Melissa, her best friend. She becomes a different person almost. She starts to hanging out with Aphrodite a lot, who's basically an entitled princess when it comes to things. But she can be quite comical in little ways, like not understanding everyday tasks we take for granted.

Daughter of Earth and Sky was pretty suspenseful as well. There are plenty of moments that leave you on pins and needles! It's hard sometimes to know who you can trust and who's deceiving you. There were some big shocks towards the end. I had my suspicions regarding a part of it, but I was so far off from whatever clue I thought I found! LOL!

As far as romance goes, Persephone and Hades do start to grow closer, yet there's still something holding Hades back. He doesn't seem to ready to give all himself to Persephone. There's the whole age thing that still acts an issue which might be at the core of it all. But I did like how they managed to get closer despite all the chaos around them.

While an interesting story and read, I didn't think it accomplished much in the end. It sort of makes itself into a filler book since it's a trilogy. As I step back and think on it, I can't really say what it accomplished. We have a few little things that I can't mention, but overall? Yeah...that's hard to answer.

Though despite that, I did see great character growth. There were problems between people and it seemed they were resolved for the most part. I tend to like character growth because they are the heart of the story in some ways.

While this may not have been the best read ever, it was still pretty enjoyable! I look forward to seeing how things all end, because this one ends with a cliffhanger! But thankfully the final book is next up in my queue!

Overall Rating 4/5 stars

  1. It's very often that the second book in a series feels like a filler. I'm glad you got some character growth because that's absolutely important to how good the series ends up. It sounds like a very interesting concept. Great review!
