Early Review--Grave Visions by Kalayna Price

Grave Visions by Kalayna Price is the much-anticipated fourth installment in the kick-ass urban fantasy series about Alex Craft, a grave witch who can communicate with the dead.

If you want to hear voices from the dead in Nekros City, you call Alex Craft. She's a Grave Witch with reasonable rates and extraordinary powers, who specializes in revealing the secrets of the dead. But now she's the one fighting to keep her own secret. She's not human—and her newly discovered heritage is causing havoc for her both in the human realm and in Faerie. But her status as an unaffiliated fae also makes her an ideal candidate to investigate a new street drug that has surfaced in several of the spaces between the human and fae worlds.

This glamour-infused drug causes hallucinations that turn real—at least for a while and often with deadly consequences. Searching for the source of this drug—and its purpose—lands Alex front and center in the conflict brewing in Faerie and she must find answers before she's dragged so deep she loses her freedom.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was in no way compensated for this review.

It's been a good four years since we last saw the world of Alex Craft, and I am happy to say that Kalayna Price is back and with her, the latest addition to the series, Grave Visions! My first worry, naturally, was trying to remember everything that's happened. And while I can't say that I remember enough, I will say that Kalayna writes in a way that the past events aren't necessarily key to reading and enjoying the latest case Alex finds herself on. Any pertinent details are summed up and mentioned accordingly, so no worries if it's been too long and too many reads for you readers as well!

Alex probably has one of the most complicated love lives ever. And I start with this first, because it seems a little necessary. Her most recent lover, Falin, ended up hurting her. He's the Winter Queen's right-hand man and he's told Alex himself, not to trust him. For he must obey the queen. That pretty much put an end to the budding relationship they found themselves in. But even better, Alex has started a new relationship with Death! Yeah, that's probably the weirdest thing I will say in this review!

But that brings about its own set of complications. As you can imagine, Death is a busy guy and can't always be there. Plus there's the whole rule where he can't be with Alex to begin with. So more turmoil for you. Though sadly, Death wasn't in this one as much as I had hoped he would be. But I feel like, since the series is back and running, we will be seeing lots more of him as the series moves along.

In this one, Alex is trying to solve a set of murders that revolve around a strange new drug. One that literally scares you to death, in some sense. It kind of reminded me of an episode of Supernatural! Add to that, the Winter Queen wants Alex to solve the murder of one of her court members. And naturally, the two cases start to intertwine.

I've forgotten so much about this series, and yet, as I said, Kalayna makes diving back in pretty easy. Granted I might be living in ignorance, but as they say, ignorance is bliss. And that works for me here. I was able to understand Alex in the moment and naturally she reflects on her feelings on past events and that gave me the finer and more important details.

The pacing to this one was nice steady pace, as Alex tries to solve multiple murders and who's behind the drug that is behind it all. And in the meantime, her own health is deteriorating as she needs to claim a fae court as her own. Without a tie to faerie, she's declining. But with a deal made with the Winter Queen, she might be able to but some time. If she solves the fae murder in time.

Grave Visions has been a long waited for read and it certainly delivers on multiple accounts. It's quite the worthy read! Welcome back, Kalayna!

  5. So glad you enjoyed this book! The romance sounds waaaay to complicated for me (I'm very picky with romance!) so I don't think I'd enjoy this one... but I do like urban fantasy novels. Lovely review, Jessica!
