Review--Seventh Grave and No Body by Darynda Jones

Twelve. Twelve of the deadliest beasts ever forged in the fires of hell have escaped onto our plane, and they want nothing more than to rip out the jugular of Charley Davidson and serve her lifeless, mangled body to Satan for dinner. So there’s that. But Charley has more on her plate than a mob of testy hellhounds. For one thing, her father has disappeared, and the more she retraces his last steps, the more she learns he was conducting an investigation of his own, one that has Charley questioning everything she’s ever known about him. Add to that an ex-BFF who is haunting her night and day, a rash of suicides that has authorities baffled, and a drop-dead sexy fiancĂ© who has attracted the attentions of a local celebrity, and Charley is not having the best week of her life.

A tad north of hell, a hop, skip, and a jump past the realm of eternity, is a little place called Earth, and Charley Davidson, grim reaper extraordinaire, is determined to do everything in her power to protect it.

We’re doomed.

Seventh Grave and No Body is yet another highly enjoyable installment in Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series. If you haven’t read this series yet, then I highly urge you to get to your nearest bookstore or library or reading device to download the first book! If you enjoy mysteries with a paranormal edge and a most humorous heroine coupled (coupled, ha!!) with a most handsome and dangerous being…then this is seriously the series for you!

Charley has quite a lot on her plate these days. There’s cold cases to be worked with her newfound friend, Agent Carson, there’s her former BFF Jessica who has taken a liking to haunting her, then her uncle brings about a case of supposed suicides who leave notes behind, yet the bodies are never found, and speaking of missing bodies, a ghost also comes to Charley asking her to find hers as well. So needless to say, Charley is busy! And pregnant, just barely so, but se still has to undergo the worst of all pregnancies; giving up coffee.

Seventh Grave and No Body is one of those reads you can’t put down, really all of the Charley Davidson books are like that! Charley is one of those heroines you just have to love! She’s a bit crazy at times, but she’s true hearted and as I said, hilarious! She can make a joke about anything really and it’s so spot on! I envy her talents! LOL!

Amidst trying to solve murder cases and missing bodies, there’s also the upcoming wedding to plan. Charley and Reyes are finally getting married (bonus points for guessing the movie I pulled that quote from!) and naturally, Charley’s sister, Gemma, is all over the planning process. There’s also Charley’s dad who has been a little AWOL lately, I want to say he did this towards the end of the sixth book as it feels somewhat familiar to me. Word of advice, never take a year long break from your favorite series before you started taking copious and detailed notes regarding the books you’re reading! So yeah, I’ve forgotten quite a bit of those little details that carry on throughout the series!

Charley also has the added problems of 12 hellhounds on her tail, which puts her in even more danger than usual. And this makes Reyes even more super-protective of her and the now added bonus of their unborn child.

This book is pretty action packed to say the least! With a handful of cases to be solved and Charley’s natural dose of added humor, there’s nothing this book is missing out on! And we can’t forget Reyes! Reyes is there, so there’s plenty of sexy times and mushy gushy romantic moments (seriously after reading a Charley Davidson novel, I’m always trying to add more humor to my life!) that will have you swooning! Just when you think Reyes is acting a little too Alpha male, he has you swooning again for learning his true motives. Sigh…definitely my top favorite Alpha male book boyfriend…you know despite the fact that he’s engaged.

I really enjoyed the way each mystery was solved. Granted, a few of the “smaller” cases just kind of got the “here’s the whodunit” reveal, but the more pressing case got quite the twisted reveal! That definitely made it more enjoyable in a sense, because you have that “ah-ha” moment added in!

The book ends with an even more shocking reveal that pars in comparison to some of the other events of the story! If only I didn’t have to read a few other books next, I’d sooo be diving into Eighth Grave After Dark. And another word of advice? Never leave the house without at least 2 books on hand! Sigh…

Darynda Jones continues have her readers eating out of the palm of her hand! Each book I’ve read by this incredibly talented woman has had me breathless! Whether I am sitting on the edge of my seat in suspense or enthralled through the romantic swoony moments, or rolling on my side with laughter as I try to catch my breath…there’s hardly a moment of (real) breathing going on! And I must say, I love it! So do yourself the ultimate favor and pick up one of her books! As always, I highly recommend starting at the beginning!

  1. I've seen you gush about this series so many times and I still haven't gotten to it. Though, I do have it on my to-read list and I have all intentions of reading it. I'm so glad you loved this one! It's great to see that the series is still going strong. I also noticed the ex BFF Jessica LOL. I think it's fun when I see my name in books though it doesn't happen very often at all. Great review!
