ARC Review--The Reckoning of Noah Shaw by Michelle Hodkin

HELLO! Welcome to my stop on The Reckoning of Noah Shaw Blog Tour! Today you'll find my review of the ARC which was yet another amazing installment of the series! This one was different than my expectations led me to believe, but I really enjoyed it and cannot wait to see what's next!

Noah Shaw confesses all in this second novel of a chilling new companion series to Michelle Hodkin’s New York Times bestselling Mara Dyer trilogy!

Noah Shaw doesn’t think he needs his father’s inheritance.
He does.

Noah believes there’s something off about the suicides in his visions.
There is.

Noah is convinced that he still knows the real Mara Dyer.
He does not.

Everyone thought the nightmare had ended with Mara Dyer’s memoirs, but it was only the beginning. As old skeletons are laid bare, alliances will be tested, hearts will be broken, and no one will be left unscarred.

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.

The Reckoning of Noah Shaw is Michelle Hodkin’s second installment in The Shaw Confessions trilogy that extends the series of Mara Dyer. I would highly recommend re-reading the series before diving into this one, unless you just have a stellar memory and I envy you for that! While I did enjoy this one a little better than the previous The Becoming of Noah Shaw, I still found myself struggling to remember what happened in the Mara Dyer trilogy! It’s been so long and wayyyy too many books since I read that one, that I can’t quite bring myself to remember what happened and for whatever reason, this is one series that no one has recapped!

But anyway, this book pretty much picks up where we left off and Noah meets Mara, Mara’s grandmother and she wants his help in protecting Mara from the mysterious and villainous professor. But Noah is still a little sore with Mara and everything that happened between them in the last go around and he’s not too keen in abiding by her grandmother’s wishes.

Noah then proceeds to go on with his life, but things don’t exactly work out as intended. He and Goose find themselves running around all over the place and finally landing in London which is exactly where Mara’s grandmother, M, wanted them. And so continues the mysterious world that is the series that Michelle Hodkin has created.

There is a good deal of mystery to this one, but the mystery is very thick and twisted and by the end, there still are not clear answers. Though much is learned in the end, and while I wish it was eye-opening and revealing, it really only presented more questions. Which I truly believe was Michelle’s intent!

One thing that saddened me about this one was that our Mara Dyer was truly not in it. Noah and she broke up after Noah learned what she did and she’s really not there at all. Yet, she’s still a constant presence in Noah’s mind despite his trying to forget her and move one.

This entire series would make for a great television series! Though it’s definitely one that would need to be binge watched. Glancing away or pausing between books will definitely leave you confused when you venture back. Which would basically be the same thing if you happened to glance away during the “show.” It’s like LOST in that sense where missing an episode or missing five minutes would have you well and truly confused! You have to pay attention closely and not let your mind wander…which I think my mind does that, but it’s only trying to remember the things I’ve read in the previous books, so not a good combination there! Lol.

The pacing to this one was moderate. It was sort of mystery like, in that we were building up to things. There were a few “intermissions” where we got glimpses from the past where I wish I could say things were made clear, but for my poor addled mind, it wasn’t entirely clear. For the most part, I just rolled with things!

While I am not saying that this series is confusing, it is deep. This is a good thing, but again, if you suffer with a poor memory like mine and/or don’t have time for re-reads, you might struggle with this one. Luckily, my notes from last time helped me a little bit, but even then I still was grasping for straws in trying to put things all together again!

All in all, The Reckoning of Noah Shaw was an excellent follow-up to its predecessor. This series is so full of mystery and intrigue that it will keep you guessing all its many secrets and trying to figure out who’s in on all the secrets and who’s not. This series is truly one of the more mysterious ones without being an actual mystery. I will be anxious to see how things will go in the next one as its ending was quite shocking and left me desperate for more!
