Mini Review--Memento by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

From New York Times bestselling authors Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff comes an Illuminae prequel digital novella that gives readers a hair-raising glimpse into the calamity that befell the invincible AI system known as AIDAN–and the daring young programmer who would risk her life to keep it from crashing.

AIDAN is the AI you’ll love to hate.

The advanced AI system was supposed to protect a fleet of survivors who’d escaped the deadly attack on Kerenza IV. AIDAN was supposed to be infallible. But in the chaotic weeks and months that followed, it became clear that something was terribly, terribly wrong with AIDAN…

So I've had Amie Kaufman and Jay Kirstoff's prequel to the acclaimed series, The Illuminae Files, Memento, on my TBR pile since it was the Aurora Rising preorder gift! And I just read it today! This little 80+ novella is the prequel to Illuminae and we get to meet AIDAN for the first time and the girl who was hist first source of human contact.

Olivia is a newbie Private 1st Class on Alexander-78V, powered by the one and only AIDAN. Though, since this is pre-Illuminae we don't know all his crazy antics just yet, instead, we're about to see how they form.

80 pages is still pretty short when it comes to this series, I mean, the books averaged at 600+ or so, this one isn't even in the three digit game. It's merely a story about a girl and how she's trying to do the best she can but when their ship takes a hit, something happens to AIDAN and he starts acting funny, well, funnier than his usual sort.

We basically see the machine become an individual, if you will. It becomes widely noted when AIDAN starts referring to itself as "I."

What made this story even more fun was the inclusion of familiar characters. Not in the full sense, mind you, but just a glimpse of a certain boy we all met in Illuminae. I can't rightly say if other names were familiar as well, because "memory issues." Ironic, with this one's title? Right? Lol.

Needless to say this novella is definitely one for the diehard fans of Illuminae Files. Likely, if you're one of those, you've read it already and I'm two years late to the game! Lol. But if you've yet to start the awesome series by these two authors, I would highly recommend starting with Memento, as it's now available as an ebook!
