It's happened. I'm finally getting FOMO. Usually I say I don't get FOMO I get KOMO--the Knowledge of Missing Out. When you basically know if you don't go or do whatever, get whatever, you WILL be missing out. Now I am experiencing FOMO and it's book related!
FOMO of Deluxe Editions
We've been seeing it the last few years now, publishers are finally decking out the books with all the bells and whistles! We're seeing gorgeous sprayed edges, gorgeous stenciled edges, more designs on the hardcase of the cover. We're getting bonus material with certain stores...it's insane! And the clincher? It's always on the first edition or one print run. Get it before it's gone...FOREVER!
And I don't know, there's just something really scary about that FOMO! Lol. When there's that book that I may or may not want to get right away but then you see the cover with those edges and you think I HAVE TO HAVE IT! You really never know when a book will take off and be the next BIG thing!
How many people were trying to find the first edition of Fourth Wing after that one took off? That was one I bought on the fly on release day and scored the original print run and everything!
But then you start seeing other books and you think, that sounds intriguing...but I do have other books by this author to read. Maybe I ought to wait for the paperback of this hardcover release. And then they reveal the sprayed edges and you're just mouth agape! Do I run the risk that the paperback will be completely different?
I have one preorder I keep debating if I should cancel as the amount I preorder during the last B&N sale was insane! There's one book I ordered because it sounded fun and the cover was so pretty with the sprayed edges. But now my brain's wondering what if they do the same for the paperback? What are the chances I will have this book read before then? Very low! Lol. The author sadly isn't touring anywhere near me for this so I can't even justify buying it that way. It's an October release, so I still have some time to debate it over and I can always return it after it arrives, but yeah.
That FOMO over editions you may never see again on books you want to read, it's real. Of course if you win the lottery you can always pay that eBay seller $1K for that very edition, but what are the odds of that? Lol.
What about you? Do all these pretty and gorgeous editions give you FOMO if you don't get them for the books you really want to read?
