I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.
I quickly dove into Sophie Jordan's A Scar in the Bone when it arrived shortly after I just finished reading A Fire in the Sky and it was immediately like returning home! And given there was an explosive ending to the first book, starting the second book was pretty much a NEED! And Sophie definitely knows how to deliver with an excellent follow-up!
We open to the story one year after the events of A Fire in the Sky, and immediately we get the sense that there have been big changes, major changes. Tamsyn is with Vetr's, Fell's brother, clan and is basically learning how to be a dragon given that she only discovered her ability not that long ago (when we last saw her). But Fell is nowhere to be seen...in fact, he's seemingly gone. We soon learn what happened to him--although I was building my own theories on that--and not a day goes by without Tamsyn missing him and feeling like he's still out there, as the tingling in her scar is always something fierce when she thinks of him.
Adjust to life as a dragon in a new place surrounded by other new dragons hasn't been easy. Tamsyn has a lot to learn and where these things come natural to the others, everything is new to her. She's sometimes resented for having been raised by humans and is really only kept around since she's female and dragons are a dying breed.
Vetr, Fell's brother, has made his interest known and Tamsyn does admit to there being some sort of connection to him, but she still can't stop thinking about Fell.
Then her scar leads her to the gut feeling that Fell might be out there somewhere and she decides she's tired of waiting and sets out to find him. But the world is a dangerous place, not only for a single, young woman, but a dragon at that. As we learn through the blurb, Stig is very much alive and is relentlessly pursuing her.
This book was so, so good! I loved returning to this world of dragons and I just loved everything about this place! I feel like we got to see more of this world this time, we spend a lot of time in the Crags where Vetr and his dragon clan live in hiding and we learn just how dangerous of a world they all live in. The tension between Tamsyn and Vetr was intense! You get the whole "will they? won't they?" vibe and then there were my wild theories being tossed around in my head! Of course, I ended up being wrong about that, but I won't get into it! Lol.
There is a good deal of action and suspense in this one. Many a time we see Tamsyn's secret in jeopardy and I felt a longing for blood with a character or two, lol. And it was just so intense! I longed to shuck my responsibilities and just read, but alas, I could not. Needless to say I ate up as many pages as I could with every free minute I had!
The ending was remarkable! As we were winding down I was trying to see if we were reaching the end, a cliffhanger, or something else entirely, and well, let's just say I got my answer! The epilogue was very illuminating and of course left me with more questions and I did read over the acknowledgements to get some form of answer as to what's next and needless to say, I am excited!
If you're looking for a hot take on the romantasy genre and have a fierce love for dragons, then you're going to want to devour these books asap! It's the start to a fantastic new series that spun off a delightful early paranormal/urban fantasy YA series. I'll be interested to see if the two timelines ever really connect in some fashion, but in hindsight, it's not necessary. Needless to say, if you're looking for dragon romance reads, look for Sophie Jordan on the shelves!
Overall Rating 5/5 stars
