Another two weeks of amazing books and goodies!! I am over the moon with my book hauling and yet weeping because I can't seem to read fast enough and my TBR trunk is full to the brim! So I had to start stacking in front of my bookcase again!

Mini Review--The Wizard Returns by Danielle Paige

Another read down! Okay, it was a novella, but still I finished another read! Danielle Paige's The Wizard Returns is the third prequel novella of the series and it was quite interesting. Granted, my memory (again) of Dorothy Must Die is pretty bad. I can bring up a few things and moments, but the Wizard wasn't one of them. So definitely hoping The Wicked Will Rise fills in the blanks for me.

Needless to say, this novella focuses on him. We start off right when he leaves Oz after Dorothy saved the day. He was a bit miffed at having to leave the place he had grown to enjoy living in. You couldn't say that he loved it really, because he was a selfish sort of guy. He loved having the power for sure though. And then suddenly, his balloon gets caught in a storm and he crashes into the poppy fields.

Twenty-five years later--yup, you read that right--he wakes up with no memory of who he is or how he got to be where he's at. It's the help of a strange fellow named Pete who clues him vaguely in on the situation. In order to gain back his memories and figure out where he needs to be, he must pass a series of tests. Famous tests. Ones that will test his brains, courage, and heart.

I really probably should've read this right after Dorothy Must Die, but you know how things go! One books leads to another and another and then a dozen others and this poor little novella was forgotten for some time. So while I did still enjoy it, I just wish I could remember if we had seen the Wizard yet in Dorothy Must Die. I feel like we have or at least gotten the skinny on him.

Regardless, it was an enjoyable read. I went through quite the series of emotions over this guy. You hate him, you sympathized for him, then you feel a variety of other things too. And by the end, just wow! I cant quite get a read down on this guy and I like that. For now at least! We shall see how the feelings change after The Wicked Will Rise, which I plan to start next!!

Review--End of Days by Susan Ee

End of Days is the explosive conclusion to Susan Ee’s bestselling Penryn & the End of Days trilogy.

So after months from its release and forever of waiting, I have finally read Susan Ee’s End of Days, which sadly is the end of the Penryn and The End of Days series, and I must say I quite enjoyed it. I’ve read reviews that basically say the same thing, that it’s an incredible book, but seems to move fast and rushes forward to get to the end. Since the series was originally supposed to be five books, I can see why they say that. We had to cram three more books worth of plot into one.

Back to my poor memory, I can’t really remember what was going on in World After. I knew Raffe was trying to get his wings back and was stuck with a pair of demon wings. He had successfully captured Beliel who was in possession of his wings at the time. And now, his and Penryn’s mission is to find someone, really Doc, to sew the wings back on.

It’s the end of days as we know it. Uriel and his followers are gearing up to wipe mankind out. Penryn and her friends and other survivors are hopelessly outnumbered and it’s going to take some mad skills to defeat the heavenly bad guys. In order to do that, they will need Beliel’s help. Beliel doesn’t quite do a 360 in his turnaround, but it’s close. Who was once such a powerful enemy, he’s now a broken sort. One who has some odd connection going on with Paige still. And it’s with his help that Penryn and Raffe are able to get backup for Raffe with his upcoming battle with Uriel.

The pacing was pretty fast in this one it seems. There’s hardly ever a dull moment and I tend to like that. Sure a few downtime moments are nice, but I like the action moving from one place to another.

During all this chaos, we see Penryn and Raffe go through the whole, I love you and want to be with you kind of thing, but I can’t. Yeah. That. Raffe has his angelic ways and wants to avoid the whole dalliance with a Daughter of Man thing. But obviously, we’ve seen him struggle with that. And the struggle continues here. But then Penryn and Raffe separate, again, for a time in this one. I was hoping they wouldn’t be apart but there was a decent chunk of time they were separated, but obviously not for long!

Besides liking the characters, Penryn and Raffe, I am also a fan of Penryn’s mother, and the Tweedle Twins! Penryn’s mom is a special brand of crazy. One that’s funny and at times, downright genius! She may not be all there all the time, but she has her lucid moments. Especially when it comes to protecting her children! And as for Dee and Dum, what’s not to love about those two? They’re freaking geniuses and wisecracks at that! Most of my LOL moments came from them!

Now onto the ending, ah the ending. I liked the ending. I thought it was very good and settles things up rather well. But then there’s an epilogue. And sigh…just, sigh…and note that’s a weary sigh. It’s one that makes you want more from the series. More from the characters. I was pretty much kicking and screaming at that little ending, just because I felt like there was still more story to tell, and yet there’s not. It’s the end. And really, everything does get wrapped up. We see a conclusion we can all live with, but there was just something about this ending that nagged at me. It made me want to see a little more before the final closing. So really, it’s kind of 50/50 on that front. There’s good and bad to it all.

While I am sad to see this series go, and so soon, I must say that I truly enjoyed it! I thought it was one helluva read! The characters are amazing and just totally kickass! Who doesn’t love that in their heroines and heroes?! Everyone had a unique personality to them that made them light up the page! I will definitely be looking forward to more of Susan Ee’s works! Hopefully she has something coming to us sooner rather than later!

Penryn and The End of Days trilogy is amazing and exciting! It’s not one you’ll want to miss!

This week's question is: If you could re-write a book which one would it be and what changes would you make? - Suggested by Go Book Yourself

MY ANSWER: Oh man...this question is HARD!! And it screams spoiler territory! Generally, I am usually accepting of books in the way they are written. Yes, endings could be better. And I suspect to see a certain book a LOT today, though it won't be included here. I didn't love said book's ending, but again, I accepted it. I like how authors write their books. Which is why I could never take part in fanfic.

But I guess one book's ending that I would want to change is Nocturne by Syrie James.

I loved this book! LOVED it! But the ending! Oh god...THAT ENDING KILLED A PIECE OF ME!! I want it back! Lol. So yeah, won't say what changes and all, to forgo the spoiler area, but if you've read it, you pretty much know what I mean about the ending! And what I would want changed! ;)

 

 

And because it has to be said, let's just let everyone on "TEAM GOOD" (because yeah...too many years have gone by and I've mentioned my crappy memory recall for details in books and such!) in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows live! Or at the very least, Hedwig and Dobby! Seriously Hedwig dying in the beginning killed me! From that moment on, I knew there would be nothing but tears from this book!

And while we're at it, Sirius doesn't die in the Order of the Phoenix either.

And Harry Potter spoilers are hardly spoilers anymore. The books have been finished for years, as have the movies. ;)

Random Thursday

Now for some intriguing facts regarding human senses and tears from That's a Fact Jack: A Collection of Utterly Useless Information [Updated] by Harry Bright and Jakob Anser:

"Humans actually have nine senses. Besides hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch, there's also equilibrioception (balance), nociception (pain), proprioception and kinaesthesia (joint motion and acceleration), and thermoception (temperature). Some scientists include interoceptive senses, such as hunger and fatigue, pushing the number of senses into double digits."

Just whoa. And I think I'm missing my equilibrioception, because I have no coordination with can relate to balance I suppose! LOL!

Just gross!!!!

"Studies show that men find the smell of women's tears unattractive."

That makes an odd sort of sense.

Review--An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Laia is a slave.

Sabaa Tahir brings us a remarkable debut that is sure to shine for years to come! An Ember in the Ashes is an extraordinary story filled with incredible characters, a fantastical setting, and the ever dire circumstances the characters find themselves in.

It’s hard to say what genre this is. Initially I thought it was fantasy, then I thought I recalled hearing it actually might be dystopian. Some futuristic books do tend take on past like settings and customs. And based on some of the vocabulary in this one, I was leaning more towards dystopian myself. But it still reads almost like a fantasy in some ways as well.

Laia’s brother is taken prisoner by the Masks, which is basically like a police system. But in this world, there’s really no justice. Just tyranny it seems. Laia seeks the aid of the Resistance, which is our rebel group trying to fight against the country’s leader. Her parents were once apart of the Resistance before they were killed, so Laia desperately seeks their help in rescuing her brother. They agree, only if she agrees to spy on the Commandment, who is basically a stone cold bitch but has a position in power just below the Emperor.

There are lots of complexities when it comes to trying to describe the government system, but oddly enough, it’s easy to grasp when you’re reading. I just struggled to accurately and simply describe it! Lol.

Then there’s Elias, who is a Mask but hates what he does. In fact, after graduation, he plans to run away from the school he’s lived in since he was young. But his plans are waylaid when he learns he is the running for the next Emperor. They apparently have a competition between four of the best students and the one with the highest score becomes Emperor, the second place because the “right hand” of the Emperor, and the other two get to die. Nice, huh?

Basically, I feel like trying to describe the plot is a bit of a challenge. It’s complex, but at the same time, reads very easily. Everything just flows together, but there’s so much going on for both Elias and Lila that it takes awhile for their stories to become one. You can see how they do though. I was quite surprised by how long it took for the two to actually meet for the first time. With Laia being the Commandment’s slave and Elias being the Commandment’s son and student of Blackcliff school, their paths were bound to cross eventually.

And if you like love triangles or not, oh boy are you in for the mother load of love triangles here! Not only do we see sparks between Elias and Lila, but there’s also Keenan who might be a possible victor for Lila’s heart and then Elias and his best friend Helene have some possible love connections going on! It was all very messy in a sense, yet Sabaa executes it well. Though I do find myself rooting for Keenan a bit more; he starts off as an ass, but then his true colors start to shine later on and yeah, I got a little soft for him! Helene on the other hand…I can’t make up my mind about this girl. For awhile I was like okay, she’s cool. But then she makes some decisions that I was just not fond of and then thinking of her and Elias together didn’t make me too happy with the feels.

For a book that’s only 446 pages, so much happens in what feels like a short time! The pacing is incredible! There’s plenty of suspicion and secrets abound with all these characters. So much deception and suspense!! It’s incredible! Every moment is filled with a tension of some kind. Every moment is emotional in some sense, even if was laugh happy moments! There were just sooo many feels to this book!

I am definitely glad a sequel has already been announced! I was surprised it hadn’t been announced sooner. The way this one ends with so many loose ends, it would be unthinkable to say that’s THE END! But thankfully, the sequel has been announced and comes out next year!

If you haven’t read An Ember in the Ashes, I highly recommend it! It has some darkness in it as well, just to warn you; attempted rape, scores of violence, and yeah, some killing too! It’s a powerful, gut-punching read. I pretty much loved every minute of it!

Review--In the After by Demitria Lunetta

Demitria Lunetta’s In the After is positively one of the most chilling reads I’ve read in awhile! And I had just binged a few horror stories awhile back as well! In the After takes it up a notch with an apocalypse. And not just an apocalypse, but one with aliens. Aliens who EAT PEOPLE!!

Amy is one of the few survivors of this alien invasion. She was lucky her dad was a sort of “eco-friendly” nut what with solar panels and their own garden, and it’s also lucky her mother worked on super secret government projects that led to their having an electric fence. Amy is basically living in her own fortress during these scary times. And she has to grow up fast on her own in order to survive this new world, because not every human is friendly either. Some can be just as bad as the flesh eating aliens!

It’s not long into her survival period that Amy takes in Baby, a small toddler child who she’s pretty much raised on her own. They’ve done rather well for themselves.

The story starts off with Amy being a teenager and then the aliens just come one day and BOOM! The population starts dwindling fast. In our current present Amy is sixteen years old, though I did get confused a bit with the back and forth times. Amy has been living three years on her own with Baby and basically living in fear for these years. But some details feel muddied now, what with her flashbacks and remembering things. The flashbacks were necessary to help us understand what has happened and I understood all that, it was just at times, I got lost in these scenes and felt unsure if it was a past even or present.

But other than a bit of time confusion, this read was pretty incredible! I couldn’t read it fast enough and soon I found I was at the very end of a 450+ page book! It was that incredible!

Amy and Baby have always relied and counted on one another to survive, now they are accepted into a large group of survivors who are in their own protective fortress (of sorts). Amy and Baby both struggle to adapt to this new way of living, where people actually wore shores! For both Amy and Baby learned to walk and run around barefoot. Shoes are too noisy and the aliens have superior hearing.

As the story moves along we start to see that this sanctuary isn’t all that it’s meant to be. There are secrets hiding within. Dark secrets.

The story definitely has the suspense built up to a T! It was incredible and amazing! I enjoyed Amy’s character. I loved how she was able to grow strong…in a sense…and survive. It always makes me realize how screwed I’d be if I was in her position. I am so not tough enough! LOL!

There’s also a bit of possible romance in store for Amy. I liked how that it was such a small and subtle thing too. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy a good romance in YA, but having it be non-existent or just barely there is refreshing! Amy is a strong, independent kind of girl and you got to hand it to her, she knows how to take care of herself.

In the After was such a mind-blowing read! There is some seriously dark issues in this one and it really fit the scene for a post-alien invasion. And the ending? Just wow! Words cannot describe it! I mean, there are words, but they would sound spoilery too me, so basically, words cannot describe it!! It was shocking and thrilling and oh wow…I wish I had time to read the next book now! LOL! The problems of a reader! Always needing to read too many books at once! It’s definitely one problem I don’t mind having!

In the After is a read not to be missed if you’re a fan of post-apocalyptic type world. It’s engaging, suspenseful and action packed! There was hardly ever a dull moment as there was always a scene filled with some kind of suspense or intensity! Be sure to add this duology to your TBR piles asap!

Overall Rating 4.5/5—just a minor knockdown from my confusion early on. Like I said there were times I couldn’t tell what was supposed to be a flashback and what was the current time. Things like that made it a little muddy for me, but it’s such a small thing, because it’s still events that happen!

ARC Review--Unspoken by C.C. Hunter

Despite her superhuman strength and enhanced senses, Della Tsang's life as a vampire certainly hasn't been easy. Especially since she was reborn and bound to the mysterious, infuriating, and gorgeous Chase Tallman.

But if there's one thing that's always kept Della going, it's her dream of being an elite paranormal investigator. Her newest case is the opportunity she's been waiting for, but as Della tries to solve the twenty year old murder and clear her father's name. She uncovers secrets about the vampire council. And about Chase.

Feeling betrayed by all the secrets he's kept hidden from her, Della is determined to keep him as far away from her heart as she can. But she'll need his help to solve the case that will lead them into the darkest and ugliest vampire gangs in town and into the scariest reaches of her heart.

C.C. Hunter brings an exciting and thrilling conclusion to the Shadow Falls: After Dark trilogy. Unspoken brings us to the end of Della’s story and I couldn’t be happier about it. Well…maybe a teeny bit happier as my ship sunk faster than the Titanic. But sigh, can’t win them all!

Della’s main focus continues to be trying to clear her father’s name for the death of his sister so many years ago. The case has been reopened and he is the prime suspect. But Della knows in her heart that her father is not capable of such a thing, even if he has been cold and distant to her over the past few months.

Then there’s Chase, infuriating and yet, still irresistible Chase. No matter how hard Della tries to fight the feelings she has growing for him, she can’t seem to win. But her struggles are completely real and valid. Chase says he loves her, but Della thinks it’s more about their bond, the one that makes them Reborns. She thinks her feelings for him might even be based off that too. Hence her struggle with her feelings over him. How can you believe what’s in your heart if there’s something else that might be a ruling factor in the game?

To make things a little more “exciting” Steve has returned to camp, and after a series of events at home, Della returns to camp as well while her father’s trial starts to go under way. Della and Steve definitely have a few issues to work out as well. I’ve always liked Steve. I loved how he was never afraid of Della’s sassy attitude. He was the first one to break through her icy exterior and he grew on me. Like he did with Della. And it’s makes Della’s “choice” all the more harder. Though, I started to see which guy she was leaning towards long before she did. I refuse to make comments on that remark as well, just to avoid spoiler territory. Just know that while what we see might not be able to be called “romance” since Della doesn’t make a choice until the very end, there are plenty of flirtatious moments that are worth grinning over!

The mystery element to this one was pretty good too. There’s a lot of buildup to needing to find the real killer. And we know he’s a vampire from the getgo. One who is very talented at staying hidden. Add to the mix a new set of murders, one that makes Della’s investigation even harder just adds more pizzazz to the situation.

Needless to say this was one fast paced read. And the fact that there’s a good 400 pages to read makes it even more delightful. There is a lot to read there, but seriously the pacing is done so well with every step of this mystery/investigation you’ll be eating up these pages!

I suppose my only complaint was the matter of resolution. When the time came, I guess I was expecting a bit more detail to the answers of why and such. But I guess when you think of it, evil villains don’t really have to have a reason why they are so evil. So I pretty much just have to accept that fact in the way of getting answers out of the story.

I loved C.C.’s revisit to Shadow Falls. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye when Kylie’s story ended and when we moved on to Della I was beyond happy. She’s such a sassy character! I’ve always loved that she says exactly what’s on her mind! The news keeps getting better because with Della’s story all wrapped up, C.C. plans to move onto Miranda’s story! Because seriously, after Perry left in the start of Della’s story, I was all about wondering what this witchy witch would do! Her novella only strengthen my desire to see her get her own happy ending. But let’s not get into all that here! This is Della’s story. And now it has ended where she is in her own happy ending! That’s two girls down and one to go!

CONTINUATIONS:

1. THE FINAL INTERTWINED BOOK--as you all know, I was in tears and still am over the cancellation of Gena Showalter's Intertwined series. This is something that I won't ever get over I'm afraid.

2. THE FINAL WATCHERS BOOK--this series was doing so well, I thought. Then we had a novella and then nothing!! I am too scared to ask Veronica what's going on. Because I think the lack of new book or novella is answer enough.

3. ANOTHER NEPHILIM RISING BOOK--yeah...I think Jennifer said that this is one she won't likely be returning to. For the foreseeable future at least. I think she just has too much on her palette that this one is being sent to the closet for awhile. Which is sad, because I adored it!

POWERS:

4. TO PAUSE/FREEZE TIME--so I can catch up on the TBR pile of course!

5. GO WITHOUT SLEEP & STILL BE A FUNCTIONG HUMAN BEING--goes with the first one a bit in that I want to dismantle my TBR pile and read all the time I can! 

AUTHORS I'D LOVE TO MEET:

6. MARIANNE CURLEY--because I LOVED her books as a teen! To meet her would be a dream come true! I've already met Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, so I hope this one can happen too!

7. J.K. ROWLING--duh! LOL!

8. KADY CROSS--looove her books! And I came sooo close in 2012 when she was to attend RT, but she got sick and couldn't come. :( ONE DAY!!
