MY ANSWER: I feel like they are thriving! With all the subgenres of romance, it's very clear that right now "romantasy" is in, which as we (have) know(n now for many many many years) is fantasy with romance in it and that's the "hot genre" now. There is of course still some paranormal romance if you know where to look and many more subgenres. I feel like that is a genre that will be safe for all times. Historical romances, contemporary romances, paranormal, fantasy...it's truly a genre that has it covered for all types when you're looking to read about it! I was always a reader who liked a little romance in their books, I didn't need it to take over the whole plot and luckily there are still plenty of those to go around too.
