Another 1 day read!! I was on a role! But now the weekend comes into play and I have errands to run! Oh well!

Keri Arthur's Mercy Burns is the long awaited book 2 in her Myth and Magic series that debuted in 2008. Mercy is the sister of Trae who we met back in Destiny Kills, this is her story. Mercy isn't a full blooded dragon at all. She's draman and is treated pretty crappy by the other air dragons. She's inferior and is good for nothing but breeding, not in a married sense either.

The sexy stranger called Death, is really named Damon. He's a certain kind of dragon that deals in death. Like an assassin so to speak, he kills who he's told to and sometimes that could be one of Mercy's kind if the kings call for it. There's a certain structure with the dragons in terms of status and Mercy doesn't rank very high being a draman. But she and Damon decide to work together because their means seek the same end. So they form a truce.

Damon and Mercy both try to fight their attraction to one another, but it isn't long before they let go. Yet Damon makes it clear early on that he cannot have a real relationship with Mercy.

The pacing is very good as Mercy has only 7 days to find her friend's killer to seek justice and still pray for her friend so that she may move on and rest in eternal peace. Should she fail to do this in 7 days, her friend is damned here on earth forever and will never have peace (Or some such thing). And Mercy already lost a day and change when she was in the hospital, so time is really not on her side and she has to work with Damon despite her better judgment to track down the killer.

There is definitely a lot of tension between these two. They are attracted to one another, but Damon can't get over their status quo--and he's not real jerky about it, just a tad.

Trae and Destiny even make an appearance at the end and it was pretty cool, just to see them. I always like that about series with different characters and what not.

Overall it was a fairly good read! The mystery element is pretty good. I couldn't really make any firm speculations, but it did have a nice ending to wrap things up! Definitely worth a read if you've read the first one. And there is a sneak peek at Darkness Unbound! Of course I forced myself (for sanity's sake) not to read it!

MY ANSWER: In YA I cannot wait for Shannon Delany's Bargains and Betrayals, book 3 in the 13 to Life series! (By now, no one should be surprised!)

This week's question is: Keeping with the dystopian and apocalypse theme that seems to be running rampant on parajunkee.com, I have one very hard question for you: If you were stocking your bomb shelter, what books would you HAVE to include if you only had space for ten?

MY ANSWER: Aw, crap! I always hate this question. Same as what 10 books would you bring if you were deserted on an island.

The Study Trilogy by Maria V. Snyder (3 books)

*Also I choose these because, one's a stand alone and the others are completed series. If I went with my all time faves, like 13 to Life, I would be in agony if I couldn't have the newest release. If there was a promise to have new releases than this list might be different!

Review--Defiance by Lili St. Crow

The Real World is a frightening place. Just ask sixteen-year-old orphan Dru Anderson, a tough girl who has taken on her fair share of bad guys. She's armed, dangerous, and not going down without a fight. So it's gonna take her a while to figure out who she can trust...

Dru Anderson has always been a good listener. She listened to her dad, but had to gun him down when he turned zombie. She listened to the Order, but got nothing but lied to in return. She listened to Christophe, but still lost the only friend she had left.

Time to buckle up, boys and girls. Dru Anderson is done listening. From here on out, she'll face the King of the Vampires on her own terms. And if the Order has a problem with that, they can kiss their sweet little svetocha goodbye.

Lili St. Crow's fourth installment in the Strange Angels series, Defiance, was fabulous! Another 1 day read for me! Really couldn't put it down! Due to the time between releases and all that I read in between it took me a bit to catch back up with the story but it wasn't long before I was back on board!

Dru is worried sick over Graves who is still being held hostage by Sergej and she is still with the Order and Christophe at "headquarters" or whatever, training. Always training for when the time comes to fight and she "blooms" into her full power.

But a lot of sh*t is still going to go down in her life and it's going to take helluva twists and turns before the night is done--okay it does take place over a few days, but I'm trying to build up the tension! ;)

Basically, yeah, Dru is going to go through a heck of a lot of turmoil that is going to twist with her emotionally and physically. There is a lot of Christophe time in the first half, since Graves is gone and if you're like me and are still on the fence of what "Team" to choose it is kind of nice, I guess. A few of my friends are Team Graves so I know they won't care for this part. Me, I still kind of remain on the fence, but am leaning more towards Graves.

Dru is going to go through a lot of questioning with herself and the Order she is supposed to be able to trust. But soon there's evidence that there is (yet another) traitor afoot. 

It surprises me how much I love the dramatic twists and turns that go on here. One minute you're thinking this and some pages later it's put into question and then a few pages more, it's questioned again! While it might be irritating to some, I love it here. It's so gripping how my emotions are being tugged this way. The tension just continues to build up the further along you read. And there are a few surprises along the way. 

The ending is sort of cliffhanger-y. There's the sense that there is a moment of "rest", but you know it's only for the moment. And the series will finally come to its epic conclusion this November (1st) with Reckoning. Cannot wait!!

I soooo can't wait to read this! Reviews are already trickling in and as much as I want to read them, I'm only skimming them. I have awhile to wait still though since I preordered this one and the wait will be longer for the mail to bring it to me!

Review--E-ARC The Perilous Prophecy of Guard and Goddess by Leanna Renee Hieber

Leanna Renee Hieber's The Perilous Prophecy of Guard and Goddess was a nice prequel to the series. It lets us get an inside glimpse to pretty much all the characters we've met in the past two books and see how everything came to be in the beginning. What led our heroes and heroines to their destinies. It was quite nice.

It took me longer than I thought to read this book, but it wasn't due to the writing or pacing or anything like that. It was a rather nice read. I liked how Hieber is able to jump from different p.o.v.'s in this series without it ever being terribly confusing. Sure it takes a moment to adjust from one character to another, but the transitions are still nice and smooth.

In this novel we learn about Beatrice and other beginnings. We learn about the first The Guard, for it wasn't always Alexi and his companions, it was a good story. What more can I say?

I liked seeing the beginnings in this novel, we see bits of the characters who weren't always front and center in the last two books and again, we learn a bit about them and some of the beginnings. Like the cafe that Josie comes to own. 

Overall it was just a nice read. I like prequels as much as sequels. I like knowing the history and background to an already loved story. There was even a "sequel epilogue" you could say, at the end that is the true ending to the series--as far as I know! And it wrapped things up nicely.

I too struggled with this one for the same reason as Larissa. Not too many of the books I read are in a dystopian world. But I gave it my best! A few series might not fit the definition exactly, but pretty close I think.

Review--The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker by Leanna Renee Hieber

With radiant, snow white skin and hair, Percy Parker was a beacon for Fate. True love had found her, in the tempestuous form of Professor Alexi Rychman. But her mythic destiny was not complete. Accompanying the ghosts with which she alone could converse, new and terrifying omens loomed. A war was coming, a desperate ploy of a spectral host. Victorian London would be overrun. Yet, Percy kept faith. Within the mighty bastion of Athens Academy, alongside The Guard whose magic shielded mortals from the agents of the Underworld, she counted herself among friends. Wreathed in hallowed fire, they would stand together, no matter what dreams or nightmares—may come.

Leanna Renee Hieber's The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker was a great followup to the first one! The titles are pretty long-winded!

Anyway, this one picks up pretty much where we left off in the first one, so the story moves along rather quickly and the battle that has been brewing, you could say, is getting hotter. The fight is coming closer and not everyone may survive. 

I was a little distracted in my reading of this since I had relatives come into town which kind of threw off my reading track, but I did finish it today and it was still rather enjoyable. I just wish I didn't have the interruptions! Oh well!!

Percy is getting used to her new lifestyle rather quickly and adjusts pretty well. There are a few shocking revelations that are made throughout the book and I'm wondering where they might lead to. The ending, was incredibly shocking so I really can't wait to dive into the third book to see what it will all be about.

The pacing is just as good as the first time around. The story moves along at a decent rate. The language is just beautiful. It has a nice descriptive flow to it without it being too wordy or boring to read. The language just fits in with what's going on.

I am so looking forward to reading the next book since the ending here seemed almost final. But there is more in fact! The Perilous Prophecy of Guard and Goddess is next in the series and I am anxious to see where Percy and her friends go next! Especially with all the surprises that happened at the end, I really can't wait!

MY ANSWER: Sometimes I do. It really depends because sometimes the other books may be different if the author writes in a wide genre. Like Meg Cabot for example, I loved her Mediator series and even gave another of her books a try, but it wasn't a paranormal book so I wasn't as interested in the story so ever since then I haven't read anything else by Meg. Although I am looking forward to Abandon that comes out next week!

But usually I do go for the author's other series if it seems interesting. Like with Charlaine Harris' series. I read her Southern Vampire Novels and it wasn't until nearly the third book in her Harper Connelly series that I decided to give that a try and ended up liking it.

With authors who write both YA and adult I usually go for both as well if I'm already addicted to their first series!

This week's question is: What is on your current playlist right now?

MY ANSWER: Uh...not much really. I don't usually tend to make playlists for myself. Although I do have one in mind. Basically the playlist I want to create is one filled with some of my old fave songs from the 90s and early 2000s. I like a lot of alternative rock and maybe some "hard", depends on how you feel like classifying it. And I do like some of the early stuff from the 90s as well.

So I plan to make a playlist of totally random songs that I loved listening to way back when! I have a few mix CDs I even made a few years back that I was going to grab songs from as well in order to create my playlist. It's going to be a totally mixed up one as well!

In other music news, my next CD that I plan on sticking in my car when I go out next is the soundtrack to The Rocky Horror Picture Show! I got it in the mail this week because prior to that some of the songs started randomly playing in my head and since I love that movie I wanted to have the soundtrack as well!

Review--The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker by Leanna Renee Hieber

The albino beauty who has come to study at Victorian London’s Athens Academy will learn not only to deal with the ghosts that she can see, but her own part in the puzzling prophecy that threatens the known world.

I've had my eye on Leanna Renee Hieber's The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker for awhile and I decided to give it a go this time! And it was quite fascinating!

It's a historical paranormal romance, I guess you could say. Sort of like The Parsol Protectorate series, but not as "steampunk-ish", meaning not a lot of that advance technology, but the story was still wonderfully told.

There is Greek mythology intertwined with the story but not like I was expecting. It was surprising and yet hard to explain without giving away spoilers, so I won't.

There is definitely some mystery and intrigue in here as well. Spies and secret societies in some respects! Totally loved it, was very thrilling. The pacing was set at a good pace. Not overly fast or slow. It didn't drag, I don't recall ever coming across a dull moment. I only wanted to know more and more!

I'm already diving into the second one as I write this and have the third one to review early as well so I'm pretty excited and glad that I waited to read these since I can read all 3 back to back! A very thrilling series so far with also a kind of modern day fairy tale element mixed in as well, despite it being 1888!

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog post by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights releases we're eagerly awaiting.

Moving right along into my May releases, the next book I want to read soon is Dead Reckoning. I'm really hoping that this one doesn't disappoint. The last 2-3 books in the series have sort of been a letdown. I was almost not going to get it but then the sale price had me pre-ordering it anyway!
