Can't Wait Wednesday #194

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

In the shadows and flames, Primals will fall…
And from the blood and ash, new gods will rise.

In the thrilling penultimate chapter of the viral BLOOD AND ASH series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout, Poppy and Casteel face their most perilous challenges yet as old enemies rise and ancient powers stir from their slumber.

Bound by love but driven by destiny, they must navigate a world on the brink of
devastation—where every choice has deadly consequences. With their bond tested and their future hanging in the balance, the fate of the realm rests on the strength of their hearts and the power of the Deminyen.

I am still so incredibly behind in this series! I think I am now up to needing to read the second book of the prequel series which I was reading with this series mixed in between. So yeah, my brain is scrambled! Lol. But definitely can't wait to have this one in my hands to read eventually!

TITLE: The Primal of Blood and Bone
AUTHOR: Jennifer L. Armentrout
PUBLISHER: Blue Box Press
GENRE: Fantasy Romance
RELEASE DATE: June 10, 2025

The twelfth book in the New York Times best-selling Villains series goes down the rabbit hole to explore how Disney’s maddest villain—the Queen of Hearts—lost her head.

The Queen of Hearts has always ruled Wonderland. “A place for everything, and everything in its place” was her motto. All was right and proper in her kingdom, until that wretched god Hades and those Odd Sisters broke the worlds. Now new and strange creatures crowd Wonderland and none of them understand that everything must be done her way. Even her precious roses are no longer red.

But Wonderland is still her kingdom to rule. She holds all the cards. The Queen of Hearts will put everything back in its proper place. The only way to do so is to send a message. Heads. Will. Roll.

She decides to throw a party to bring this about. Croquet, card games, executions. Everyone in Wonderland receives an invitation. But there is one guest the queen does not expect. A girl named Alice.

Another series I am greatly behind in! I am three books behind before this one releases, so maaaaybe I can squeeze one more in before this comes out...but doubtful! Lol.

Let's Discuss: Book Contests

So here's a random thought that popped up in my head this week. I was probably on Goodreads scrolling through the contest page when I paused on one title...it was one that I read and it made me wonder...

Do You Enter Contests for Books You've Read?

If I read the book, I most likely own it already. So I am more than likely not to enter that particular contest. But say I read it and own it, but this edition is SIGNED! Do you enter the contest then? That is likely when I might, because why not? Especially if it's Goodreads, because we all know that winning one of those is like winning the lottery...next to impossible. I think I've might have won maybe 5 or 6 times?? I can't remember anymore because sometimes I win books elsewhere. But I feel like with Goodreads, it definitely has to be under 10 wins total from the time I joined, but I wasn't savvy enough to know about these contests right away back then either!

Sometimes I'll see a title and think, oh if I win that one I can gift it to so-and-so who I think would like it but hasn't read it yet. Or if it's even the aforementioned if I win that signed copy version, I can gift my unsigned copy to so-and-so.

So depending on the circumstances, I might enter one of these contests for a book I own. We're not going to delve into I have the first edition copy and this is a reprinting with a new cover, because that's a whole new bag to delve into! Lol. For me it would depend on the series and my level of love for it and whether I like or dislike the cover I have vs the new cover. Lots of things to consider, so we'll ignore that scenario.

I really should've written down what book this was that started the thought or if it was even a contest that I entered! Lol. But I feel like I'm at a 50/50 on this one. Mayyyybe more 80/20 where I wouldn't enter the contest if it was for book I read and possibly own, likely own is what I think I originally said for this discussion. It's definitely a book I enjoyed so there's that too! I guess it would depend on the title too of course.

Otherwise if it's for a book I read and enjoyed and it's NOT signed, I would probably pass on the contest. If it's randomly a book I think someone I know would enjoy, I'd throw my name in willy-nilly-ly and if I won, I won and gift it to that person, if not, no big deal. Goodreads would inform me of my loss even though the disclaimer says "you will be contacted if you win." Nowhere does it say "you will be contacted if you lose" too. I really hate those reminders because it literally reminds me of a book I was excited to read early but will not be reading early. So it's like thanks. Thanks for rubbing that loss in my face Goodreads.

But anyway, would you enter a contest for a book you read? Would you want a physical copy for your shelf if it was an ebook or ARC that you read? Would you gift it to a friend? Would you enter said contest for the book you own if you could win a signed copy--and this was a book you absolutely LOVED!? What are your thoughts?

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and The Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week's topic is: Top Ten Books with "Curse" in the Title

*in no particular order

10. SEALED WITH A CURSE by Cecy Robson--an awesome urban fantasy series from over 10 years ago now! Wow, I feel old!
9. A CURSE SO DARK AND LONELY by Brigid Kemmerer--a great Beauty and the Beast retelling!
8. A CURSE OF QUEENS by Amanda Bouchet--a TBR book, and wow, didn't intentionally put all these blue books on one row! Lol.

7. BY A CHARM & A CURSE by Jamie Questell--another TBR book, I remembered being intrigued by it, but alas, it's still unread!
6. TIGER'S CURSE by Colleen Houck--the start of one epic saga!
5. THE KISS CURSE by Erin Sterling--another TBR book, really liked the first book but haven't gotten back to this series yet.

4. THE WINNER'S CURSE by Marie Rutkoski--oh wow, I read this series sooo long ago, I can't remember too much about it now. I do remember the publisher tried to change the cover to something hideous on the final book, but luckily enough reader complaints had them reverting!
3. CURSE OF THE WOLF KING by Tessonja Odette--another Beauty and the Beast retelling, but this time, with a wolf!
2. WOLF'S CURSE by Kelley Armstrong--still need to read this novella duology too that was focused on Elena's kids as teenagers!

1. A CURSE FOR TRUE LOVE by Stephanie Garber--did I fashion this whole theme around this title?

But of course! lol.

Review--The House That Horror Built by Christina Henry

A single mother working in the gothic mansion of a reclusive horror director stumbles upon terrifying secrets.

Harry Adams loves horror movies, so it’s no coincidence that she accepted a job cleaning house for horror-movie director Javier Castillo. His forbidding gray-stone Chicago mansion, Bright Horses, is filled from top to bottom with terrifying props and costumes as well as glittering awards from his career making movies that thrilled audiences—until family tragedy and scandal forced him to vanish from the industry.

Javier values discretion, and Harry always tries to keep the house immaculate, her head down, and her job safe. Then she hears noises from behind a locked door, noises that sound remarkably like a human voice calling for help. Harry knows not asking questions is a vital part of keeping her job, but she soon discovers that the house may be home to secrets she can’t ignore.

I finally picked up Christina Henry's The House That Horror Built after numerous attempts to do so previously (in which I never really started it but was reading review books or event books)! This time I sank into the book and was ready to be scared witless, or at least mildly spooked!

There's definitely a great air of mystery to this story, but it wasn't as spooky or terrifying as I had hoped it would be. It was a subtle kind of horror that danced in and out of the pages. But when the spooky moments started happening, it got seriously creepy and weird!

Harry is a young, single mom trying to do the best she can in raising her teenage son, Gabe. Harry has a pretty tragic backstory, in which we glimpse through sporadic flashbacks. The story starts out alternating a flashback of Harry's and one of Javier's as well. It helps to paint their backstory and how they ended up in their current situations.

Harry doesn't have much of an education, so she takes somewhat menial jobs and one of them is cleaning the house of the movie director, Javier Castillo a few days a week. And one day when she's cleaning, she hears someone whisper "help me" through the walls of a room, a room that is always locked and she is never to go into.

Then other strange things start to happen around one of Javier's movie props where things don't seem quite right with it. Harry tries to shake it off and keep her head down as she does her job that she desperately needs. And while the spooky moments are few and far between, Henry teases enough out to keep this reader invested. Then that's when things begin to escalate.

There is a bit of mystery surrounding Javier and the family that left him many years ago. It's a taboo subject for Javier and is part of what his flashbacks tell us. Things begin to slowly come together towards the end though and the last part of the book is where the heart-racing danger finally comes into play!

While I did really enjoy The House That Horror Built, I was a little dismayed by the somewhat slower pacing and only teases of the scary things. I guess with a title like that I had expected there to be a little more spookiness going on. The moments they popped up were spooky enough, but alas, they always ended and it would be a few pages more before they happened again. The ending did make up for it and was quite the eye-opener in terms of resolutions. Of course, I still have lingering questions about Harry and her future. Much like I did with one of Henry's last books come to think of it. I mean, I get the bone-chilling ending of, "but wait...!" It does leave this reader's mind reeling for sure, but yeah, I wouldn't have said no to maybe a wee little epilogue either. Lol.

All in all, while it wasn't the fast paced horror novel that I had hoped for, it was intriguingly spooky and knew how to reel a reader in. Not being a horror movie buff, I don't know if these unanswered questions are trends or not, but it does feel pretty on par for the few horror movie endings that I know of!

Stacking the Shelves--The Indie Bookstore Day Edition

Stacking the Shelves--The Indie Bookstore Day Edition

Stacking the Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks! The meme is now hosted by Reading Reality.

Another week down in the books. Another boring week too. It was just uneventful once again, so you know, whatever! Lol. Yesterday was fun for Indie Bookstore Day! I hiked out to my favorite store Main Street Books in the Historic Old St. Charles area and bought a few books. Sadly the blind date with a book did not pan out at all. This time around there was even less hints to go on for what the book was about and the one I got was of zero interest, so that will be going into a Free Little Library the next chance I get. It's truly the reason why I hate blind dates with books. These started out so well at MSB. Some years ago, they actually hid the title in the wrapping, so I could peek at them this way as this was when I used to get ARCs from the publishers too. Then they stopped doing that, but gave a few trope or plot hints, like enemies to lovers YA Fantasy or something like that. This year it was just straight up YA Fantasy, Adult Fiction. So I was like, this is not going to be good...and it wasn't. :( But I did come out with two books I bought, a fun new bookmark, plus a yummy cookie that was still slightly warm from the cookie shop down the street! So it was still a win!

Here's what I got this week:

The Twisted Throne by Danielle L. Jensen--sooo I had the first 4 books in the series from Fae Crate. And since the series has been republished with a major publisher, they redid the covers. It was/is unclear and unknown if Fae Crate will finish out the series and while I wasn't a super fan of these covers, I did like the concept and the map on the naked hardcover, so I bought Danielle's special edition of this one. I was told the size is slightly taller than Fae Crate's, but I'd rather have the matching theme more than the matching size and theme or you know having two rando books to add to the series in general. So there you go!

Now Comes the Mist by Julie C. Dao--this had been on my maybe TBR list for awhile and I decided to buy it today when I saw it at the bookstore! It was the last copy, so clearly it was meant to be!
Nightweaver by R.M. Gray--I had been debating about this one for awhile as well and when I saw there was only 2 copies left, I knew it was fate once again! Of course, I found this one first, so really Julie's book was fate once again! Lol.

Then I also bought more bookmarks...I know I didn't need them, but MSB had the first one on the left and it was so cute! The second I bought at a super tiny little street corner party at my sister's neighborhood! Once I saw the cute little metal bookmarks in this size I knew I wanted one because it would work perfectly in my MM PBs!

the one on the left is a cute axolotl with the "I like to read A'lotl" message
the next one is a small metal one that has "a room without books is like a body without a soul" It was one of the more bookish ones that they had. The rest were cats and books and I'm not much of a cat person. I like them, but we tended to have dogs more than cats growing up, though we did have cats for two periods of time!

And then finally, I received my preorder gift for The Otherwhere Post! I was just starting to wonder about this one as I was getting close to the countdown of weeks after publication and it arrived at last!

I received washi tape
post its
sticker

THANK YOU Penguin Teen!

And that was it for me this week! What all did you get?

Book Blogger Hop #355

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: Do you have enough shelves for all your books? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

MY ANSWER: Hahaha! Oh no, no, no. Not even close.

Whenever I can get my own place, I am hoping I can get one of those big Billy bookcases from IKEA! Before I didn't think I'd want a cheaper quality one, but for the amount of books I need shelves for, I am going to have to take the cheaper route! Hopefully it will hold up for the rest of my life.

Books from the Backlog #132

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread.  If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. This is a fun meme hosted by Carole's Random Life in Books!

They’ve left the cage—but they’re not free yet.

After their failed escape attempt, Cora, Lucky, and Mali have been demoted to the lowest level of human captives and placed in a safari-themed environment called the Hunt, along with wild animals and other human outcasts. They must serve new Kindred masters—Cora as a lounge singer, Lucky as an animal wrangler, and Mali as a safari guide—and follow new rules or face dangerous consequences. Meanwhile, Nok and Rolf have been moved into an enormous dollhouse, observed around the clock by Kindred scientists interested in Nok’s pregnancy. And Leon, the only one who successfully escaped, has teamed up with villainous Mosca black-market traders.

The former inhabitants of the Cage are threatened on all fronts—and maybe worst of all, one of the Hunt’s Kindred safari guests begins to play a twisted game of cat and mouse with Cora. Separated and constantly under watch, she and the others must struggle to stay alive, never mind find a way back to each other. When Cassian secretly offers to train Cora to develop her psychic abilities—to prove the worthiness of humanity in a series of tests called the Gauntlet—she’ll have to decide fast if she dares to trust the Kindred who betrayed her, or if she can forge her own way to freedom.

I added Megan Shepherd's The Hunt to my TBR pile in May of 2016. I was in that frame of mind where I needed to buy the sequel to the first book even though I still needed to read that. I always had that fear that I wouldn't be able to find the sequels when I needed them and am actually realizing that now with some other series of mine, so yeah that will likely be something I continue to do in life! At least this way I can binge it at my leisure! Lol. I do vaguely remember people having mixed opinions on this series, but I am hoping that I will enjoy it when I get to it.

Review--Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig

In the luscious, dark sequel to One Dark Window, Elspeth must face the consequences of what she's wrought - perfect for readers of Hannah Whitten's For the Wolf and Alexis Henderson's The Year of the Witching.

Elspeth and Ravyn have gathered most of the twelve Providence Cards, but the last, and most important one remains to be found: The Twin Alders.

If they are going to find it before the Solstice and cure the kingdom of the dark magic infecting it, they will need to journey beyond the dangerous mist-cloaked forest that surrounds their kingdom.

And the only one who can lead them there is the monster that shares Elspeth's head. The Nightmare. And he's not eager to share any longer.

I can easily say that Rachel Gillig's Two Twisted Crowns was better than the first book! After an intense struggle to understand the Providence Cards and the magic they provided, I found this book to be easier to comprehend as there was not so much focus on the cards and their worth. They were still very much present but my mind didn't wander as much when they were talked about.

In this book we are treated to a surprise, with an additional two points of view per chapter! While we still get Elspeth's point of view from her entrapment in her own mind at the mercy of the Nightmare that has been hiding within her mind for years, we also get two other points of view.

The Nightmare is in full control of Elspeth, she is now the voice in his mind while he controls her body. Ravyn wants the Nightmare to lead him to the final Providence Card, The Twin Alders, so that he may have a full set and be able to "do what must be done." He and his sister along with a few others travel into the darkest parts of the forest, the most dangerous parts, in order to retrieve the card.

Meanwhile, Elm is trying to help Elspeth's cousin, Ione, find her missing Maiden Card. And I have to say, these were the moments I looked forward to! Elm is one of the new points of view we get and I positively loved his interactions with Ione. Meant to be his sister-in-law whenever his evil older brother marries her, the two are constantly thrust together as Ione is something of prisoner in the castle because of what Elspeth did to Hauth at the end of One Dark Window. I almost wished we could've gotten her point of view as well, as Ione was quite the character! I loved her! She comes off as a quiet, shy, and "dainty" sort, but she's a force to be reckoned with and I loved her quiet strength!

Then we are also seeing Elspeth in her sort of imprisonment of her mind, but it's now really the Nightmare's mind and she is learning just who it really is and how it became what it is today. These were interesting moments, but I will admit sometimes the memories began to bleed together and it was hard to tell one from another or if it was something more from Elspeth's mind.

The ending to this one was pretty epic! I was expecting a battle to end all battles and we get that in a sense! There were many vile characters I was hoping would meet their just ends and I can say I was not disappointed with the results. We'll just leave it at that.

Pacing wise, I felt like this book went better than the first as well. With less time focused on the magic system that wasn't really built up in an easy to understand way, we were able to focus more on the characters and plot. Or at least I was. The story flowed a little better in my opinion. I don't know if it was because we got to be in more places at once with the multiple points of view and were not constricted to Elspeth's comings and goings--which were a little stilted this time around. Needless to say, I felt like the story flowed better at a better pace.

Since Elspeth and Ravyn were separated this time around, we got our romance elements from Elm and Ione as previously mentioned. They had a slow-building relationship and I adored it! It wasn't quite an enemies to lovers situation but still something like it, I feel like "enemies" is too strong of a word and "adversaries" doesn't quite fit either. They were basically not friends who turned into allies into something more and I adored every moment of it!

The ending was very satisfactory as well for a series ender! Gotta love a quick and (somewhat) easy duology as the series begins and ends so quickly when read back to back! Truly the best way to handle duologies in my opinion, do I always take my own advice? Of course not! Lol. I try to, but there are times I don't realize I am starting a duology, I'll think it's a trilogy or maybe longer...only to learn it's a duology and I just read the first book. Yeah, hate it when that happens! Oh well.

If you're a fan of fantasy reads with a little romance on the side--note, not a full blown out "romantasy" read as I feel like the romance is very, very side element here--then The Shepherd King duology might be the series for you! The magic system was a little complicated for me to get used to in the first book but I felt more comfortable with it by this second installment! We all get those hiccups every once in awhile with a series and this just happened to be mine. Still, I did find it to be an enjoyable read with a great cast of characters who kept me going the entire time!

Overall Rating 4/5 stars

Can't Wait Wednesday #193

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Shea Ernshaw comes a haunting romantic contemporary fantasy about a teen navigating her family’s love curse that blooms with their enchanted tulips every year.

Seventeen year-old Lark Goode wants only one to escape her small town of Cutwater and the history of her family name. It’s a history that began during the Dutch tulip mania of 1636, when Lark’s ancestor stole the last remaining tulip bulbs and fled to America. But when the tulips bloomed on American soil, madness sprouted from their snowy white petals.

The madness was love.

Now, generations later, the Goodes remain cursed—the unnatural flowers outside their home causing locals to fall helplessly in love with anyone carrying Goode blood in their veins. While her brother embraces the strange power, Lark wants nothing more than to be free from it.

But when she meets a boy who seems unaffected by the family curse, Lark finds herself falling headlong into a feeling she’s spent her whole life trying to avoid. Yet, all curses and magic come with a price, and the town of Cutwater soon sinks into a dangerous sickness tied to Lark and the ill-fated tulips.

To save the town, Lark will need to sacrifice everything—even true love—to break the spell. Because in the Goode family, love has a way of destroying everything.

I love Shea Ernshaw's novels! I still need to read her adult one but the YA ones that I've read so far have been incredible and I cannot wait to read this one too!

But the only one who returned that night was Nan. She maintains that she has no idea what happened to her three friends. The girls went ahead, and it was as though they disappeared into thin air.

Now, one year later, it's the memorial of that night. All of Saltcedar has gathered at the river. Nan is even wearing the same clothes she wore that fateful day last summer. And when Luce climbs out of the water, no one is more surprised than Nan.

This week's topic is: Top Ten Books That Surprised Me

*in no particular order

10. THE ETERNITY CURE by Julie Kagawa--I remember this one surprising me with Jackal's character! He came off as villainous in the first book and this one was a game changer!
9. INTERTWINED by Gena Showalter--definitely my first heartbreak too since it was cancelled at the last book. But I remember this one surprising me with how much I LOVED it due to the male protagonist! It was really one of my first male MC outside of the MG books and oh how I LOVED it!
8. BEAST by Lisa Jensen--this one surprised me with just how beautiful the book was! I love a good TB&TB retelling and this one was different but wonderful!

7. TEN by Gretchen McNeil--yeah that twist...didn't see it coming! It was one of my first thrillers and I have since learned my lesson. Lol.
6. CRUSH by Tracy Wolff--so many shocking reveals in this one I was pretty much surprised throughout the book!
5. WICKED RESURRECTION by Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguie--this one really just surprised me by existing! I thought the series forever cancelled but it was revived 6 years after the "last" installment. It's why I always held out hope for my other series, but those have long past that 6 year mark.

4. REMEMBRANCE by Meg Cabot--this one surprised me simply by existing as well! I LOVED The Mediator series and for Meg to return to her YA series and make it "adult" was a delight!
3. SUCCUBUS BLUES by Richelle Mead--I remember discussion board friends telling me to read this one! I had thought it would have too much romance in it given that the heroine's a succubus, but it definitely surprised me by having the romance as a side element!
2. VAMPIRE ACADEMY by Richelle Mead--the book that brought me back to YA! Those same discussion board friends told me to read this one as they thought I would like it and assured me it didn't have that teenage drama or angst I was experiencing in the last round of YA contemporaries I was "forced" to read when there wasn't any paranormal ones to read and it was basically a match made in heaven!

1. LEGENDARY by Stephanie Garber--naturally a Caraval book is here! Lol! I think I was pretty surprised with this one given the reveals! Granted I started speculating at some point in the story, but confirmation always comes a nice surprise too!
