Stacking the Shelves

Stacking the Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks! The meme is now hosted by Reading Reality.

Another week come and gone. It was uneventful again other than being busy at work. Definitely in that phase of going through the motions as there's just not much going on. I am going to a book signing later this evening though with Susan Dennard! So that will be fun! It's been a little while since I've seen her, but I remember enjoying hearing her talk and stuff, so it will be fun! Pretty much nothing else worthy of note happened this week, which is fine too I guess. Lol.

Here's what I got this week:

Tiger's Trek by Colleen Houck--I still need to read the book she released last year, but I learned the hard way of what happens when you buy the book for when you're "ready" for it. Never again. Lol.
On Wings of Blood by Briar Boleyn--I caved! I bought the pretty new edition even though I have the original paperback. I couldn't stop staring at those edges!
Once a Villain by Vanessa Len--still need to start this series, but I stand by what I said just a moment ago! Lol.

Then I finally decided to renew my Owl Crate sub! I was excited for this book, read an ARC, loved it! Saw the cover of this one and was like...meh. The rest of the features are just gorgeous though! The naked hardcover, the edges...the flipside of the cover is more artsy and doesn't have the title so I won't be flipping it. The cover isn't bad, I guess it just wasn't what I expected or hoped to see.

And I FINALLY took a new picture of the new box! Lol.

And that was it for me this week! What did you get?

Book Blogger Hop #372

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: Have you ever read a book with a character with the same name as you? (submitted by Snapdragon @ Snapdragon Alcove)

MY ANSWER: It almost feels rare that I get read my name in a book! At a time where there were always at least 2 Jessica's in a class, I haven't encountered many in my reading days. It's possible for off the side characters, like ones who just popup and then leave and have no part in the story really.

But of course, I have an answer for this. There was a book I read where Jessica was the main character...and it was one of my all time favorite books ever! And not just because we shared a name, although that was a high point for me as a teen!

Yes, my beloved favored book, the one that started me down this path of vampires and werewolves where I never wanted to look back to contemporary reads ever again was Demon in My View by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. It starred Jessica, a teenaged author who discovered that the vampires she wrote about in her books were very real and were not too happy with her for spilling their secrets!

Books from the Backlog #149

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread.  If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. This is a fun meme hosted by Carole's Random Life in Books!

In the enchanted kingdom of Brooklyn, the fashionable people put on cute shoes, go to parties in warehouses, drink on rooftops at sunset, and tell themselves they’ve arrived. A whole lot of Brooklyn is like that now—but not Vassa’s working-class neighborhood.

In Vassa’s neighborhood, where she lives with her stepmother and bickering stepsisters, one might stumble onto magic, but stumbling away again could become an issue. Babs Yagg, the owner of the local convenience store, has a policy of beheading shoplifters—and sometimes innocent shoppers as well. So when Vassa’s stepsister sends her out for light bulbs in the middle of night, she knows it could easily become a suicide mission.

But Vassa has a bit of luck hidden in her pocket, a gift from her dead mother. Erg is a tough-talking wooden doll with sticky fingers, a bottomless stomach, and a ferocious cunning. With Erg’s help, Vassa just might be able to break the witch’s curse and free her Brooklyn neighborhood. But Babs won’t be playing fair…

I added Sarah Porter's Vassa in the Night to my TBR pile in October of 2016! It sounded like an intriguing mystery and some good mythos added in! I remember learning a wee bit about Baba Yaga once upon a time, so this one sounded very intriguing to me and still does. So hopefully one day!

Review--The Darkness Within Us by Tricia Levenseller

Chrysantha Stathos has won.

By hiding her intelligence and ambition behind the mask of a beautiful air-headed girl, she has gathered important secrets, earned her father’s constant care, and become a wealthy duchess—all by age nineteen. Now, she is only one elderly, dying duke away from having all the freedom, money, and safety she’s ever wanted.

Or so she thought.

Turns out her little sister somehow snatched the true victory away from her: Alessandra is wedding the Shadow King, the most powerful man in the world. Meanwhile, after the death of Chrysantha’s no-good, lecherous husband, a man claiming to be the duke’s estranged grandson turns up to inherit everything that should be hers.

Chrysantha is enraged. There is no way that she’s going to let some man take everything from her. Never mind that he’s extremely handsome and secretive and alluring with mysterious powers… No, Chrysantha wants Eryx Demos dead, and in the end, a Stathos girl always gets what she wants.

It's been a good long time since I read Tricia Levenseller's The Shadows Between Us but diving into the companion novel, The Darkness Within Us was relatively easy! Chrysantha is Alessandra's older sister, the one we thought cold and uncaring about her younger sister, but there are two sides to every story and this one is Chrysantha's.

Chrysantha's plan from the beginning was to always be her own woman. She wanted to make decisions for herself and be in control of her own life. But living in a time where women are beholden to their fathers and then their husbands didn't leave her with many options, but where there's a will, there's way and Chrysantha found her way. She "arranged" her own marriage to an old duke with no children or possible heirs and when he meets his untimely demise, Chrysantha is finally free.

But then everything comes crashing down when a young man, Eryx, comes claiming to be the duke's grandson and has the documents to prove it and suddenly Chrysantha is about to lose everything she fought so hard to obtain. Unless she can find another way to get what she wants.

Eryx just wants what he believes to be his. His grandfather entrusted his title, money, home, and everything in between to him, but what he had counted on was there to be a widow in the wings. Naturally, he and Chrysantha collide as both are determined to keep what they believe to be theirs. While we only get Chrysantha's point of view in this story, Eryx's makes his wants very vocal as well and what he wants is for Chrysantha to leave and let him live in peace. He sees the only way to get rid of her is to "help" her find a new husband.

I have to say I positively love these Stathos sisters. They are both strong, determined young women who will not let anyone or anything get in their way. You would think this would make them cruel or selfish people, but when you are inside their heads, like with Chrysantha, you realize that's not the case at all. Chrysantha knows what she wants out of life and will do whatever she has to do to get it. Which in the long run, is very basic human rights and wanting to choose for herself.

We get to know what was driving Chrysantha behind her choices that we vaguely heard about in Alessandra's book, and it all makes a fitting kind of sense. Chrysantha's dynamics with Eryx were delightful as well. She's a cunning young woman and knows what part she's to play with each particular man she encounters, yet Eryx is not quite your ordinary young man. We soon get bits and teases that there's something unique about this man. Given this book's predecessor, things are a little easier to deduce but only in the vaguest of ways.

There was a wee bit of a mystery to this one surrounding Eryx of course. Who he is, where he came from, the past that continues to haunt him. I also liked that we got to see Alessandra again as well. Then we have that romantic tension between Chrysantha and Eryx that was positively delightful. While trying to get rid of the other they find themselves falling for each other! What's not to love about that?

All in all this was a most fantastic read! Since this is a companion novel, I wouldn't say you "have" to have read The Shadows Between Us in order to follow this one, but it helps. Besides being another great read it gets you setup in this world and explains things. There are things that occur in this one that are more familiar like and less surprising by having read the first book. If that makes sense! Lol. Needless to say The Darkness Within Us was yet another tantalizing Levenseller read that was simply unputdownable and is totally bingeworthy!

Overall Rating 5/5 stars

Can't Wait Wednesday #210

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

The highly-anticipated sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black's stunning adult debut, Book of Night.

There'd always been something wrong with Charlie Hall. Crooked from the day she was born. Never met a bad decision she wasn't willing to double down on. She may be good enough to steal a shadow from a tower, but will she be good enough to steal back a heart?

I read the first book sooo very long ago, my mind is drawing a blank. I'm hoping I have notes somewhere on it as I do remember it giving me a bit of a hard time but since it's a duology I feel like I ought to complete it and plus Holly is coming here on tour and I already bought my ticket! Lol.

There's a shortage of men in the kingdom of Amarra. After a failed rebellion against the matriarchy, most noblemen in the country are dead. Now the women of Amarra must obtain their husbands (should they want one) by kidnapping them from other kingdoms.

Olerra, a warrior princess vying for the throne, is determined to prove her worth by kidnapping a husband. And not just any husband. To outmaneuver her treacherous cousin, she needs the best. Fortunately, the second-born prince of their greatest enemy is widely known for both his looks and his sweet, docile temperament. He's the perfect choice to secure her claim to the throne.

Sanos, heir to the Kingdom of Brutus, has nothing but contempt for the idea of a society run by women. Trained from birth to fight, lead, and follow in his father's overbearing footsteps, his path has always been set. Until he takes his younger brother's place in a drunken prank and finds himself kidnapped, carted off to the Amarran Palace, and informed that he is to become the husband of Queen Potential Olerra. Another week in the books. This wasn't too bad of a week. I got to attend Brigid Kemmerer's signing. She was coming into St. Louis for some mini con that was also happening this weekend. I had looked into that but it was really only Brigid in attendance that I knew, so I just went to the signing here. That way I could avoid downtown too! Lol. My aunt also came into town so I hung out with her and my mom. Work wasn't too bad. It's picking up a little each day since we're in our busy season. The weather was horrible though. We're talking heat warnings. We were going to go to a festival that is held annually that I normally love going to but mix dangerously high heat warnings AND crowds on a small tiny street for vendors and you got the makings of not a fun time so my family decided to skip the event. Largely because of the temperatures. We can deal with crowds for the most part, but add in insanely high temperatures and we're all just lie nope!

Here's what I got this week:

Warrior Princess Assassin by Brigid Kemmerer--SIGNED keeper copy! Plus an art print!

And then I got my Fairy Loot August book. This one wasn't really on my radar but it sounds intriguing enough, so I might read it at some point at least!

(sigh...I miss my bookshelves and books! This shelf is actually with me in my parents' house but my books are still in storage. The separation is killing me but the house search has become dismally slow the last few months.)

That was it for me this week! My TBR pile is pretty content with me this week since I just added a keeper copy and a potential read! Lol. What did you get this week?

Books from the Backlog #371

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: Do you visit and share books in Little Free Libraries in your area? (submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver's Reviews)

MY ANSWER: I don't have too many in my immediate area. But when I have books or swag that I need to donate I will look one up. Whether I'm headed in a certain direction or go to the few I know about if I am in that area. I love taking a peek in them whenever I find them. Sometimes I find something, but rarely. I do like putting things in there. Even if it's just swag as I think other readers might enjoy that if they find these hidden libraries!

A spindle. A beautiful girl. A century-long slumber.

There is a story that longs to be told. It searches for its heroine, its prince, and the magic it needs to come alive. It will stop at nothing for its happily ever after.

One girl in search of answers. Two powerful forces at war. Three curses braided together.

After the spell protecting her is destroyed, Rose seeks safety in the world outside the valley she has called home. She has been kept hidden all her life to delay the three curses she was born with, curses that will put her into her own fairy tale and have drastic consequences if they take effect. Accompanied by Griff, the handsome and mysterious Watcher, and Quirk, his witty and warmhearted partner, Rose tries to escape from the ties that bind her to her story. But will the path they take lead them to that freedom, or will it bring them straight to the destiny they are trying to avoid?

I added Sarah Prineas' Rose & Thorn to my TBR pile in October of 2016 as I had her first book of this series in there as well! I love a good fairy tale retelling and they both sounded good, so I ordered this one without having read the first one. A bad habit I got into but when it came to reading the book a few years later, I found that looking for the sequel is a LOT harder these days! So here is my bad habit, but with good reasoning! Lol.

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

From New York Times bestselling author Colleen Houck comes Tiger’s Trek, the electrifying new installment in the Tiger’s Tale series, set in the captivating universe of the beloved Tiger’s Curse saga.

Five unlikely companions are thrust into the dreamworld, a realm teeming with shadowy monsters and dangerous mysteries. To save their empire from the ruthless Death Draughtsman—a centuries-old collector of magic—they must confront their deepest fears, gather their strength, and unlock the secrets hidden in their hearts.

The stakes have never been higher. The Draughtsman’s growing power threatens not only the citizens of the empire but also the untamed Siberian plain ruled by the Nomadic Alliance. Hope lies with the reappearance of the ancient protectors—the tigers. If the tigers and their human allies can unite in time, they might stand a chance at breaking the curse and restoring balance.

But courage comes at a cost. Twin tsarevnas and their companions—a meticulous hunter, a defiant priest, a restless outcast, and a guarded soldier—must decide if they’ll risk everything to fight for their people, or turn their backs in order to save themselves.

Their intentions are noble.

But heroes aren’t remembered for their intentions—they’re remembered for their sacrifices.

Dive into an epic tale of bravery, loyalty, and the power of dreams in Tiger’s Trek, a story that will leave you breathless and yearning for more.

I STILL need to read the last Tiger's Saga book Colleen put out last year, the year before? They are always so massive lately so hence the reason why it's slipped the cracks a bit! I still love this series so I had to get these continuations!
