The 50 Bookish Questions Tag

So last week I saw this fun tag over at Essentially Ash! I thought it sounded like fun and thought why not do it! This is The 50 Bookish Questions Tag and it originated over at Reading on a Star! I borrowed the image from Ash too!

1. What was the last book you read?
That would be The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli

2. Was it a good one?
Yes, I enjoyed it!

3. What made it good?
I enjoyed the storyline itself. It took a little while for things to get going, but the plot was very intriguing and kept me hooked!

4. Would you recommend it to other people?
Of course! Especially if you love dragons!

5. How often do you read?
I'd say I read a little bit every day, but not as fast as I would like!

6. Do you like to read?
No, I LOVE to read! Lol.

7. What was the last bad book you read?
I wouldn't say bad, I would just say not what I expected. Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison wasn't at all what I was expecting from a book with a wolf silhouette on the cover.

8. What made you dislike it?
It read like a contemporary book. It was very ordinary and very everyday life styles for a woman who just recently got bitten by a wolf and was starting to become a werewolf herself. It was more about her and her family life and finding a place for herself back home and overcoming a tragedy from her past. The turning into a wolf was only a very, very small part of the story.

9. Do you wish to be a writer?
Yes, I'll admit I have not touched my manuscript in wayyyy too long. I'd try to self publish it but I would not know where to start and it's so costly to do it right.

10. Has any book ever influenced you greatly?
I guess you could say Demon In My View by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes is the one that triggered me into wanting to be a writer. I read a book about vampires, that happened to include a young writer herself discovering they were real and for some reason it blew my mind and made me want to cobble my own story. That one will never ever, ever see the light of day though! Lol.

11. Do you read fan fiction?
Sadly no. My TBR pile is just soooo big, that I don't feel like I have time. Plus I move from one series to another so quickly that I likely wouldn't remember my feelings over a certain book world to be able to enjoy the fan's take on things.

12. Do you write fan fiction?
No. The closest I got was when I tried writing something as a kid that was inspired by Sailor Moon, but instead I made the teenagers have powers related to nature! Lol. Another hideous concoction that will stay forever buried!

13. What’s your favorite book?
Oh man, I really hate this question. Sometimes it's really more about the last book I read that totally hooked me in! There are books I read over ten years ago that I would still say are favorites of mine. Then it also depends on genre too. Let's just go with Legendary by Stephanie Garber! I love everything she writes, but Legendary was Tella's book and I just adored that girl!

14. What’s your least favorite book?
Oh man, I hate that question too! I guess my most recent choice would be A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid. I was highly anticipating this one when I knew it was in Owl Crate's September box last year, but sadly, it just wasn't for me. It did not meet any of my expectations.

15. Do you prefer physical books or read on a device?
Definitely physical books. I don't know why, but my brain can read faster with a real book than a kindle book and I know it's like the opposite for nearly everyone else I talk to! Lol.

16. When did you learn to read?
Uh, I guess it was kindergarten? The usual age I suspect. No child prodigy here, just average. Lol.

17. What is your favorite book you had to read in school?
The one and only book I was forced to read that I ended up loving was The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas! It was totally the way he got revenge on his enemies without actually just out and out killing them! Perfection!

18. What is your favorite book series?
The Caraval Series...followed closely by Once Upon a Broken Heart Trilogy! Oh AND The Mediator Series by Jenny Carroll/Meg Cabot!

19. Who is your favorite author?
Stephanie Garber, Maria V. Snyder, Jeaniene Frost, Kelley Armstrong, and Jennifer L. Armentrout are definitely my top 5!

20. What is your favorite genre?
Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Thrillers--in adult, YA, and NA levels!

21. Who is your favorite character in a book series?
Tella from the Caraval Series without a doubt! And also Janco from Maria V. Snyder's Study Chronicles! Love that man so much!

22. Has a book ever transported you somewhere else?
Sadly, not in the physical sense, but yes! I feel like I am like an invisible watcher every time I read a book! Like I was running with Scarlet through the streets as she played Caraval and all that kind of jazz.

23. Which book do you wish had a sequel?
Ooh easy enough, Nocturne by Syrie James! This was a vampire love story with a The Beauty and the Beast spin! Sadly it ended with a sort of cliffhanger and there was supposed to be a sequel but it never happened. Now if you want to talk about canceled book series that I wish could be finished, we're gonna need a bigger page for that! Lol!

24. Which book do you wish DIDN’T have a sequel?
None? Usually if a book has a sequel it was planned that way! Lol. Duologies are fun and I love binging them! I don't think there was every a book that was "standalone" but then had a companion novel come out. I mean there could've been but I enjoyed it as well, so I wasn't sad/mad about its existence!

25. How long does it take you to read a book?
A few days usually. Less than a week for sure. It just depends on how long it is and the formatting of a page! Some of them have been super tiny font with like no line spacing and those can take longer for me to get to. But I definitely manage 1 book a week!

26. Do you like when books become movies?
It's a love/hate relationship usually. I always fear the movie will rip the book apart and ruin it. But there have been some movie adaptations that did fairly well. The Harry Potter movies were done fairly well. They weren't perfect either, but I still enjoyed them

27. Which book was ruined by its movie adaptation?
Easy. Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause. This was another of my early day reads and OMG it was a FAVORITE! It's still one of my most favorite werewolf novels ever! When I heard they were making a movie I was SOOOO excited. I saw it and I sat there and wondered...did these movie execs read the same novel I did? Because that was not it. They had character names right...but that was literally it.

28. Which movie has done a book justice?
As I said the Harry Potter movies did pretty good. I would say the first Divergent movie did well too. It's always just good, well or fairly right. I can't recall if I saw one that was near perfection.

29. Do you read newspapers?
No.

30. Do you read magazines?
Not so much anymore.

31. Do you prefer newspapers or magazines?
Neither really.

32. Do you read while in bed?
Yes, pretty much.

33. Do you read while on the toilet?
No.

34. Do you read while in the car?
Yes, if I'm not driving, obviously! Lol. But I can handle reading for a few hours if the roads are smooth! Oddly, I just wrote a discussion post on this last week! Lol.

35. Do you read while in the bath?
No, I'm not a bathtub person. Plus getting my book anywhere near water makes me anxious.

36. Are you a fast reader?
Absolutely not! I feel like I am super slow compared to other readers!

37. Are you a slow reader?
I guess yes? I mean I know I just said super slow but I might be comparing myself to audiobook readers too and I don't read those so I guess that's why I feel slow! I mean I read 77 books last year and then I see readers who read 200+ so in that sense I feel slow!

38. Where is your favorite place to read?
I usually read in bed, but I prefer to read in a lounging arm chair or just a comfy couch! That's another priority in my furniture shopping once I get a house! Lol.

39. Is it hard for you to concentrate when you read?
No, not really. It's probably harder for me to notice other things when I'm reading--I can make myself do this when I read in public places though.

40. Do you need a room to be silent while you read?
I prefer silence or quiet, but I can make do with whatever the situation has going on. Obviously I couldn't read at a rock concert as that's just a touch too loud but nearly any other situation I can make do! I used to read with my headphones on playing music to drown out the sounds of cafeteria noise as at least with my music I can kind of put that in the back of my mind where dozens of conversations was a bit harder.

41. Who gave you your love for reading?
Hmm...I guess my mom? She would read to me before bed as a kid. Then I just liked reading stories to pass time while I waited in many, many doctor waiting rooms.

42. What book is next on your list to read?
I'm finishing up Kirsten Ciccarelli's The Caged Queen! I was basically binge reading the trilogy as she's visiting my city next month! So next up is The Sky Weaver which will conclude the trilogy!

43. When did you start to read chapter books?
Uh...maybe when I was 6 or 7? One that sticks out the most in my memory was Matilda by Ronald Dahl! I remember I had the movie poster cover--as I wasn't the savvy books to movies reader just yet and thought oh look it's a book of the movie I want to see! Lol.

44. Who is your favorite children’s book author?
I don't really have a favorite as I don't read too many children's books these days. The last set I remember reading were by Kobi Yamada who wrote What Do You Do With an Idea? I found it so cute and inspiring in regards to writing...or just anything really!

45. Which author would you most want to interview?
Oh wow! I haven't interviewed an author in ages! I think it would be fun to interview Stephanie Garber! Ironically I have not interviewed her despite my absolute love of her books!

46. Which author do you think you’d be friends with?
Stephanie Garber of course! Lol.

47. What book have you reread the most?
Lately, I would say any of Stephanie's books! I re-read Spectacular just two months after reading it the first go around! In terms of just books I re-read, I re-read Demon in My View by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes a lot! Yes, this was my first vampire read and when I couldn't find a new one to read, I just re-read this one!

48. Which books do you consider ‘classics’?
That's hard to say. Nowadays I would say "my" classics are ones like Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison or Bitten by Kelley Armstrong and the forementioned Demon in My View! But if you want to say classics in the "general" sense, I'd say things like Pride and Prejudice, Catcher in the Rye...and a slew of other books that were forced on me and that I loathed.

49. Which books do you think should be taught in every school?
I guess, even though I loathed them, the above classics that I just listed and all the other ones I am forgetting as well. They were not enjoyable reads for me, but I get that they needed to be taught. They are classics as devised by whatever educators deemed it so. They have all those themes that one gets to learn. And though I loathed the plays as well, Shakespeare is still a good one to teach since there are usually so many movie remakes that take on a modern day twist. It's good to know where all these things originally came from.

50. Which books should be banned from all schools?
I'm not really a fan of the "let's ban books that have themes we don't like" kind of thing. I mean granted there are always exceptions. Like we need to make sure books are being taught to age appropriate levels, obviously. I think if that is always kept in mind and if there's a book that may be deemed controversial, then there definitely should be like a parent's permission slip going on. I really can't think of specific examples for this one.

On a side note, when my sister was teaching a 5th grade class a few years ago, I helped her create a "banned books" in-classroom library. Now trying to find banned books for this age level was a bit hard. I listed out titles for her and then the reason why it made the banned list. Like we all know Harry Potter was banned because of the witchcraft and wizardry; magic is bad! Alice in Wonderland had several reasons for being banned, my favorites were "talking animals is blasphemous" and "a girl as the main character? Well, that's just NOT done!"
