Challenges Monthly Wrap-up: January

CHALLENGE 1: 2025 Discussion Challenge

I managed 5 discussions this month which is not a bad way to start the year! To start the challenge out, I am aiming for 25 discussions for the year, but as we know I'll likely surpass that number eventually! Lol.

CHALLENGE 2: Beat the Backlist Reading Challenge 2025

Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray (10/3/17)
The King of Crows by Libba Bray (2/4/20)
The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli (10/2/17)|
The Caged Queen by Kristen Ciccarelli (9/25/18)
The Sky Weaver by Kristen Ciccarelli (11/12/19)
Edgewood by Kristen Ciccarelli (3/1/22)

I read 6 books from my TBR pile all from pre-2025 and pre-2024 while I'm at it! This largely happened because Libba Bray and Kristen Ciccarelli are touring to my city in February and I thought it was time to get caught up on their books just so I can avoid any possible spoilers! Lol.

Book Blogger Hop #343

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: Have you ever asked yourself, "Why did I buy this book?" (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

MY ANSWER: I would say probably a good 5-10% of the time. Lol. I use to say it more, but nowadays I've kept my TBR under control by picking up books I really want to read! Some I've kept that were book boxes or gifts where I thought, maybe one day. But for the most part, I feel like I've gotten good about picking out the books I will enjoy. Of course, every once in awhile I am proven wrong! Like when a thriller or horror story ends up having only 1% of the actual thriller or horror elements.

Yes, the book really did have barely any horror or thriller vibes despite being marketed as such. Those are the ones that get me and then I want to throw them across the room at the end. Of course, I never do, but in my head I am! Lol.

Review--Edgewood by Kristen Ciccarelli

No matter how far she runs, the forest of Edgewood always comes for Emeline Lark. The scent of damp earth curls into her nose when she sings and moss creeps across the stage. It’s as if the woods of her childhood, shrouded in folklore and tall tales, are trying to reclaim her. But Emeline has no patience for silly superstitions.

When her grandfather disappears, leaving only a mysterious orb in his wake, the stories Emeline has always scoffed at suddenly seem less foolish. She enters the forest she has spent years trying to escape, only to have Hawthorne Fell, a handsome and brooding tithe collector, try to dissuade her from searching.

Refusing to be deterred, Emeline finds herself drawn to the court of the fabled Wood King himself. She makes a deal—her voice for her grandfather’s freedom. Little does she know, she’s stumbled into the middle of a curse much bigger than herself, one that threatens the existence of this eerie world she’s trapped in, along with the devastating boy who feels so familiar.

With the help of Hawthorne—an enemy turned reluctant ally who she grows closer to each day—Emeline sets out to not only save her grandfather’s life, but to right past wrongs, and in the process, discover her true voice.

Haunting and romantic, Kristen Ciccarelli's Edgewood is an exciting novel from a bold, unforgettable voice in fantasy.

I finally picked up (the catchphrase of 2025 folks! Lol) Kristen Ciccarelli's Edgewood and was immediately immersed into a strange and alluring fantasy read! I love a good fantasy and when you throw in the fae it can be even more incredible, if executed right. Granted, I know there's always different interpretations of how they are perceived, but I guess I sometimes expect certain things to be standard and when they aren't, I always hope for a little explanation as to why...or close to it. But let's get into the thick of things before I get into that.

Emeline is a nineteen year old girl with dreams of being a singer. She used to write songs all the time, but now she sings the songs her friend writes and enjoys the lifestyle she lives, as she believe it's leading up to her dreams of being on tour and singing professionally. For now, she just sings at little places and occasionally opens for an indie band. But there's something strange that happens when she sings, she starts to see the forest closing in on her.

What forest you ask? She calls it Edgewood and ever since she can remember she's always been able to see it getting closer anytime she sings. No one else seems to see it though, so it can make life harder when she needs to dodge encroaching ivy or jump as a horde of spiders starts coming out of her instrument. But things take a dastardly turn when her grandfather is kidnapped the Wood King. She must venture into the forest of Edgewood itself to find him and rescue him from the king.

When she finally finds the king, she can tell he's not quite well in the head. But she makes a deal with him, she will be his personal singer for the court, if he frees her grandfather. All the while, Emeline plans to find a way out of the deal herself as she was just landing her own deal to open for a famous indie band while they go on tour and she only has a few days until the tour starts. But the king doesn't want her to sing her own music, he wants her to sing the music his favorite court singer sang. So now Emeline must look for the sheet music that is hidden somewhere within Edgewood.

Aiding her, sort of, is Hawthorne, the king's tithe collector. Naturally, there's some heated chemistry brewing between Hawthorne and Emeline, yet I couldn't really get behind this as we learn that Emeline has a boyfriend back in the "mortal realm." I am not a fan of infidelity. Though through Emeline's thoughts and narration, we know she's not serious about the guy. In fact, she admits to just moving from guy to guy, trying to find the right connection with someone and when it doesn't have the right feelings to it, she ends the relationship. Since she's already feeling like it's time to end things with Joel, the boyfriend, she doesn't mind a few stolen kisses, but Hawthorne does.

This. This right here is largely why I could not get into the romance. I know we're supposed to be Team Hawthorne, but since Emeline already had a boyfriend, one she was still with because she hadn't gotten around to ending things, just irritated me. We didn't get much of Joel's character at this point, but he was helping her achieve her dreams of singing and opening for an indie band. On paper, Joel was a standup guy and because she just hadn't gotten around to ending things with him, she thought it was okay to pursue something with someone else. Sorry, but this does not jive with me. It did kind of make it hard to continue to like Emeline when it came to romantic pursuits, but I tried to just push that out of the way.

Hawthorne was an interesting guy as well. He himself was the epitome of mystery. Granted being of the fae, you kind of expect him to hold back on some things. He made for a very intriguing character that I could never really pin down as to what he was hiding and boy was that a doozie!

Despite not enjoying the romantic elements of this story, I will say the mysterious parts were very good! There's something happening to Edgewood. Something permanent and disastrous, but since Emeline is trying to escape it, she's not in a hurry to solve the mystery. But we do learn that there's a dark and evil creature wreaking havoc on the fae who live there. How this mystery elements brought us full circle to other details was done remarkably well. This aspect I really did enjoy! I thought it was the right way to go about tying certain mysteries and questions together.

As I briefly mentioned, I did wish we could've gotten a better insight to the rules of this realm of faery. Was it really even faery? I'm starting to wonder on this, because those certain rules we all know from faery lore were not addressed at all. I mean, yes, we don't always have to follow the same pattern of rules to be abided by when it comes to supernatural creatures, but I guess I felt like maybe some kind of acknowledgement would've been nice. Whether it was to explain how things worked or why they didn't work in the typical way. Or if the realm of Edgewood was even considered a part of faery and its rules and enchantments. I'm not trying to compare this to other authors who write about faeries and the faery realm, but just because there are so many books out there about the fae and the abundance of rules and such that come with the fae, I guess I was hoping for an inkling of that to appear or to explain why it was okay to do one of the things you are to never do when entering the faery realms. But again, that's just a nitpick from me that comes from reading sooo many different books involving the fae! Lol.

All in all, I did enjoy Edgewood. It was a magical story with an intriguing storyline and I loved the mysteries that were buried within the faery realm. I enjoyed Emeline and Hawthorne as well, maybe not so much in the romantic sense as the previously mentioned rant will tell you why. But outside of that scope they made for intriguing characters. This was definitely a worthy read even if I didn't agree with all the elements of it and I thought the ending was very fitting as well.

Books from the Backlog #120

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread.  If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. This is a fun meme hosted by Carole @ Carole's Random Life in Books.

In twenty-four hours, everything they know will change forever.

Evangeline Stone has died twice, survived dozens of wounds that should have killed her, bled to save innocent lives, and she’s still standing while so many of her friends are in the ground. With one final confrontation with the Fey brewing and an end to the constant battling in sight, Evy is ready to fight one last time—and then she’s done. She only has to get through one more day.

Wyatt Truman has loved Evy secretly for years, and openly for only a few months. Their time together has always been fraught with death and blood and fear, but they have overcome all odds and defeated every enemy in order to earn their happily ever after. And once again, Wyatt is putting his trust in an elf in order to secure that future.

Brevin’s plan to stop the Fey will require a leap of faith for everyone involved, as well as the potential loss of life for the three Therian men who volunteer to host and control a Tainted—a demon from the place where magic began. Creatures of emotion and instinct whom Brevin insists can be controlled if summoned correctly and into the right vessel. As time ticks down to the summoning ritual and Dreg violence breaks out all over the city, both Evy and Wyatt find themselves torn between doing what’s right and following their hearts.

I added Kelly Meding's The Night Before Dead to my TBR pile in April of 2016! I had read the Dreg City series and really enjoyed it! Classic Urban Fantasy at its best! Then Kelly wrote one final installment when I suspect the publisher dropped it. So this might be a final wrapup or just one final adventure type book. It's been so long I can't remember what was happening in the series, but I do hope to read this one day! Even if I can't go back and reread the entire series to remember what was going on!

Let's Discuss: Blogoversary Reminiscing

Today is my blogoversary and as you can see in my banner, I've been blogging for a really long time! Lol. And my, how things have changed over these years and I can't help be a little sad about it too. As so many things have changed and I have lost touch with so many other bloggers who were all there throughout the years with me at some point. Blogging isn't for everyone, or it's only for them for a certain period of their life and that's all totally fine! Blogging can be time consuming in itself and that's not even mentioning the reading we do for the blogging part and all the other aspects that come with blogging, such as writing posts, commenting, reading other posts and whatnot. It is a lot.

Blogoversary Reminiscing

I've told my blogging origin story before, but if you're new here and didn't want to dive through all my backlog of posts--and I totally don't blame you at all, it's a LOT of posts--I'll tell you my little story. I was once on a discussion board for Rachel Vincent! This was before blogging got big and I chatted on there a lot with other readers about Rachel's books and our theories. Anyway, Rachel was hosting a contest to win an ARC of her next book in the series we were all loving on and it basically turned into a contest where the most places you posted a review of her books, the more entries you got.

So when she mentioned writing a blog post, I thought, I can do that! So I found Blogger and created my blog that day. I didn't realize how quickly I needed a blog name, so I thought, well Rachel's book was "a GREAT read" and I mean GREAT, so I went with that! Lol.

Sadly I didn't win that contest, but it ended up being for the best as THAT book had a KILLER cliffhanger! Omg, if I had read an ARC of that I would have been crying hysterically AND having to wait however many months it was until the next book! So yes, sometimes losing is a good thing! Lol. And then I decided, well, I have this blog now, I guess I can keep with it and just post my random blabbing thoughts on books on it since no one in my real life circles liked to read, let alone liked to read the books I liked to read.

And thus the blog was born!

And now, here we are in 2025 and it seems the blogosphere has shrunk drastically. Times are always changing, we've evolved blogs into vlogs (though they were kind of around then too) and TikTok posts, Instagram posts...so many different mediums of expressing our love for books.

And yet, I guess I am an old fuddy duddy as I still like blogging. I still like going with the classic route as that's just how I function best. I HATE public speaking. Don't try to tell me speaking to a camera is different because my brain won't believe you. I will delete the video a thousand and one times and then not end up posting any takes as I will find something to hate about every one of them! Lol. So writing blog posts it is! Writing the reviews in this medium will be how I do it.

Plus, as a reader, I still prefer reading reviews. I don't like watching videos as one, I might not always be in a place where I can listen freely, with or without headphones. So that right there is a HUGE draw to avoid video/vlogs/TikToks. Second, I don't always have time to listen to a 15-20 or 5-10 minute or longer video post. That takes too long. I can read a review faster than that.

And yes, I've said before I am a slower reader when it comes to books. Or maybe I am comparing myself to audiobook readers, because yes, that is reading! I don't know. But when I can see the length of what I am reading, I can speed myself up and since I'll read a review when there's time to be had, I can read it really quick. Another thing that can't be done with videos, I only ever speed up my podcast to 1.5 as 2 sounded wonky and you only get more chipmunk-y as you increase the speed! Lol.

So I guess what I am trying to say is that I am what you call a classic blogger or a retro blogger. Whichever terminology is your preference! Lol. It's the way I like to blog as a blogger and how I like to interact with other bloggers as well. It's the writing realm that I like and it makes me need to pull out my writing again, get the vacuum to suck up all its dust and get it into shape again to do something with it. I once thought I could maybe share my writing in this space once, but with the shrinking size I am not so sure. I know there are other platforms where I can try to do this but that always made me nervous too. It's a conundrum for sure!

So, I guess Happy Blogoversary to me! If you've been following me for awhile or even a day or a minute, I appreciate you! <3

Can't Wait Wednesday

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Bly has nothing left to lose in her quest to save her sister in this thrilling sequel to The Revenant Games that’s perfect for fans of All of Us Villains meets Kingdom of the Wicked.

Bly won the Revenant Games, but she lost everything else.

In her desperation to resurrect her sister, Bly betrayed Kerrigan, the vampire who she’d planned to sacrifice to the witches before she fell in love with him—only to find out that Elise was never dead. With nothing left, Bly will do whatever it takes to locate her sister.

Her only lead on Elise lies with Kerrigan’s brother, Donovan, who she turned over to the witches in place of Kerrigan. She spends her nights tracking down witch prisons to rescue him. Meanwhile, Kerrigan is also searching for Donovan, but after Bly’s treachery, he refuses her help.

But when the vampire queens accuse the two of them of treason, they’re only offered one escape from retrieving a mystical root that only grows on the banks of the Hallow Pool, where legend says that vampires and witches were created. Now Kerrigan and Bly must find a way to work together if they want to keep their lives and save their siblings.

But they’re not the only ones hunting in the forest, and as their feelings for each other rekindle, they risk being torn apart once more.

I still need to read the first book, but am not sure on this series' length. So it's likely a good thing I waited to read it! Lol.

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and The Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week's topic is: Top Ten New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2024

*in no particular order

10. JENNA LEVINE--I added her book to my TBR when it came out, but it took a year to get to it when she came to St. Louis for the second installment! It was cute and I love a cute paranormal read every now and then!
9. CARISSA BROADBENT--I was convinced to read this when another reader recommended it to me at a signing! Then it turned out Carissa was coming to St. Louis soon, so it was perfect timing!
8. LIESL WEST--this was an Instagram discovery! I don't remember how I found Liesl or if someone posted a picture of her book and I loved the cover and once it said TLM retelling but with a sea-witch twist, I was sold!

7. LEXI RYAN--I had Lexi's first two books on my TBR for a bit and I had contemplated going to one of her signings that was like a 5 hour drive away. So I read these in advance, but then I had did like 2 long road trips right before this one came up and I was too tired, so I didn't end up going. Hoping to meet her one day though!
6. RACHEL HARRISON--another author I had in my TBR for awhile that took her visiting St. Louis to get me to read! Lol. I was able to read 2/3 books of hers that I had and so far I'm 50/50 on them. But I have hope for the rest! Still really enjoyed this one featured here!
5. DANA CLAIRE--I believe this was another Instagram discovery, I think I actually signed up for the blog tour for this one, possibly...I know I did on the second book! It basically had Supernatural vibes so I was all over that! It was a very fun read and I can't wait to read the rest!

4. SARAH HAWLEY--another fun paranormal rom com author I discovered...probably in 2023 but didn't read until last year! Definitely can't wait to read the rest of the series in my TBR pile!
3. ISABEL IBANEZ--I had Isabel in my TBR for awhile as well! I finally picked this one up because of its The Mummy vibes, but I made sure to wait until I had the sequel in my hands as I heard it had a devastating cliffhanger!
2. BELLA HIGGIN--another author I had in my TBR prior to last year but I finally picked up her books as I thought it was going to be a trilogy to her vampire series, but it turns out it's going to be 2 duologies! So I read the first duology and am now waiting for word of the final book of the second one.

1. SIMONE ST. JAMES--another author I had in my TBR for awhile and once again took her visiting St. Louis for me to get to her books! I managed to read 2 of them prior to the signing and I positively love the ghostly mysteries. One of them needed a little more ghost business in my opinion, but this one was definitely a favorite!

Book Blogger Hop #342

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: What books do you look to for inspiration at the start of the year or to motivate you to make positive changes in your life? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

MY ANSWER: Umm...I guess I don't look for that kind of book? I read for escapism, so I'm always looking for a book to sweep me away into another world, even if it looks like ours, and take me away from my problems for a little while. I guess I'm not super big on the inspiration and positive change. I know, it feels harsh to say. But reading makes me happy and I'm happy in the fantastical worlds I can get lost in.

Books from the Backlog #119

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread.  If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. This is a fun meme hosted by Carole @ Carole's Random Life in Books.

From international bestselling author Colleen Gleason comes a new take on the modern gothic. In the tradition of Antoinette Stockenberg and Barbara Michaels, a romantic suspense novel with supernatural elements.

When Fiona Murphy inherits a small antiques shop from an old man she met only once, she's filled with surprise, confusion and delight - and a little bit of terror at having a new responsibility in a life she prefers to be free and easy. As she takes over ownership of the quaint shop, odd things begin to happen. Lights come on and off by themselves, even when they are unplugged...and there is a chilly breeze accompanied by the scent of roses even when the windows are closed.

Gideon Nath, III, is the stiff and oh-so-proper attorney who helps settle Fiona's inheritance, and despite her quirkiness and fascination with all things New Age, he finds himself attracted to this fun, sexy woman. After she finds an unpleasant surprise in one of the shop's closets, scares off an intruder in the store, and uses her skill at palmistry to read Gideon's future--of which she appears to play a part--Fiona begins to realize that her free and easy life is about to change...whether she wants it to or not.

I added The Shop of Shades and Secrets by Colleen Gleason to my TBR in April of 2016! I loved Colleen's Gardella Vampire Chronicles and its spinoff series that I still need to read! This series started out a little different for three books and then she revamped it a bit to extend/expand the world. I had just seen Colleen at a signing last year in October and she said there were some things she changed but the bulk of the story stays the same! So I felt good about that as I had forgotten this detail of the tweaking and bought the second and third book in their original forms too! Lol. I think she said it was more the scenery/background type info that got changed from book to book, but the plot stays the same! So I'm good on that front!

Review--The Sky Weaver by Kristen Ciccarelli

At the end of one world, there always lies another.

Safire, a soldier, knows her role in this world is to serve the King of Firgaard—helping to maintain the peace in her oft-troubled nation.

Eris, a deadly pirate, has no such conviction. Known as the Death Dancer for her ability to evade even the most determined of pursuers, she possesses a superhuman power to move between worlds.

When one can roam from dimension to dimension, can one ever be home? Can love and loyalty truly exist?

Now Safire and Eris—sworn enemies—find themselves on a common mission: to find Asha, the last Namsara. From the port city of Darmoor to the fabled faraway Star Isles, their search and their stories become woven ever more tightly together as they discover the uncertain fate they’re hurtling towards may just be a shared one. In this world—and the next.

I finished Kristen Ciccarelli’s Iskari trilogy with The Sky Weaver which was a rather interesting read! This time around we get dual point of views from the two main characters. I thought how their paths entwined was a most entertaining part of the story.

Eris is a pirate and a thief. She has a particular talent for disappearing with the help of a magical object she carries with her. When she’s told to steal a gem from the dragon king, Dax, she does so with ease but then decides to have a little fun and steal a tapestry from Safire’s office.

Soon it becomes a game as Eris is fascinated by Safire and enjoys teasing her in this matter but what she doesn’t expect is for Safire to track her down. But unfortunately for Safire, she’s caught by Eris’ boss who happens to be a pirate.

Eris is tasked with getting Asha’s location out of Safire but naturally Safire has no intention of turning over her cousin to pirates for untold reasons. She will do whatever she has to do to keep her family safe even if she finds herself falling for her captor.

This was a most intriguing story indeed! Eris was quite the character because she was new to us and there was so much we didn’t know about her or that she didn’t know about herself! I started making my speculations as the story moved on and I was proven correct!

This time around our intermittent chapters of flashbacks were of yet more new characters so it was hard to figure out how they connected to the story at first. Naturally as we got closer to the end things started to become more clear.

The romance between Eris and Safire was a sweet kind. They start falling for the other but somehow each managed to talk themselves out of pursuing anything because of who the other girl is. There’s quite a bit of back and forth between them. Mainly just heated looks and moments plus a stolen kiss or two.

I really enjoyed how rich in mythology this series was! We get another healthy dose of this in this one! Plus the dragons! Got to love that dragons are free to roam now! If you’re looking for a fantasy series that’s rich in mythology, magic, romance, and dragons then this is a series you will enjoy! This fast-paced trilogy was a breeze to read and I enjoyed every dragon filled moment of it!

In this hauntingly twisted tale, an author reconnects with an old boarding school friend, forcing her to reckon with their shared past and the imaginary creature she thought they left behind.

Touch a line, you break your spine.

Stacey is the dusty air, the cracked soil, the drought. To fourteen-year-old Bethany Sloane, she’s everything.

Abandoned by her mother at a remote African boarding school, Bethany will do anything to stay in Stacey’s good graces. And that means learning the rules of each twisted game.

Touch a crack, you break your back.

Seventeen years later, Bethany is a bestselling author. Disabled now, she can’t remember what happened back in the bush. But there’s no mistaking Stacey Preston’s name in her inbox.

Glassy, glassy, cut my arsey.

That email brings Bethany’s childhood rushing back. The Glass Man was just a story the Thorns invented, a game of wits. But every game has its rules—and consequences for breaking them. To stay alive this round, Bethany needs to play right into Stacey’s hands.

Dark and disturbing, The Thorns explores the horrifying world of adolescent abuse, controlling friendships, and blinding obsession.

I looove Dawn's books! They are always so creepy and mysterious! This one did give me a Rapunzel vibe at first but after reading the description, I think it's just a coincidence! Lol.

Review--The Caged Queen by Kristen Ciccarelli

Once there were two sisters born with a bond so strong that it forged them together forever. Roa and Essie called it the hum. It was a magic they cherished—until the day a terrible accident took Essie’s life and trapped her soul in this world.

Dax—the heir to Firgaard’s throne—was responsible for the accident. Roa swore to hate him forever. But eight years later he returned, begging for her help. He was determined to dethrone his cruel father, under whose oppressive reign Roa’s people had suffered.

Roa made him a deal: she’d give him the army he needed if he made her queen. Only as queen could she save her people from Firgaard’s rule.

Then a chance arises to right every wrong—an opportunity for Roa to rid herself of this enemy king and rescue her beloved sister. During the Relinquishing, when the spirits of the dead are said to return, Roa discovers she can reclaim her sister for good.

All she has to do is kill the king.

The Caged Queen is the second book in Kristen Ciccarelli's Iskari trilogy and I was pleased to learn that it's a trilogy that will follow different characters that interact with one another! These are always fun as we did occasionally see glimpses of Asha and Torwin in this one, but largely, this was Roa and Dax's story!

Roa made a deal with Dax that if she married him, she would lend him the use of her army to help him dethrone his father in the takeover of Firgaard. All was successful, until it wasn't. Roa wanted Dax to use his powers as king to help give her people the freedom they deserved as they are the scrublanders, the ones who were forced into slavery by the old Firgaard king. She is struggling to get better rights for her people so they can be independent and not continue to beholden to Firgaard and forever remain under its thumbs. But Dax is not the king she thought he'd be.

Years ago, Dax would visit Roa's kingdom where he would be tutored throughout the summer as his father thought him slow and he needed better "training" for the day he'd eventually be king. These were the good old days when Roa's twin sister, Essie was still alive and the three of them were eventually the best of friends, until the accident that killed Essie instead of Dax.

Although Essie died, her spirit never moved on and instead she became a hawk, the one that is Roa's constant companion and the two still share their telepathic gift and can communicate with one another. Roa can still visit with Essie on the Relinquishing day, a sort of "holiday" where families remember and honor their deceased loved ones and sometimes, these loved ones who have not moved on, can come back on this day and visit. Roa would do anything to have her sister back the way she was before she died...and that's when a peculiar opportunity presents itself.

Roa's marriage to Dax was rushed and it was never consummated, so technically it can still be broken. Roa is appalled by Dax as he's constantly flirting with whatever girl is in front of him and while Roa never shares his bed, she can hear that he clearly shares it with someone every night. So when her ex-betrothed, Theo, comes to her with a plan to dethrone Dax and let Roa rule, Roa hears him out but is still hesitant. If she were uncovered to be plotting against the king, it would mean her death, just as it had meant for Asha, who was able to escape and go on the run. But then Theo says he knows someone who knows of a way for Roa to get her sister back whole and complete. She will just need a magical weapon and use it to kill the king.

This book was yet another whirlwind of adventure! The plots of deception that were happening ran thick with tension. I never could figure out if I liked Roa or not, or if I even liked Dax or not! It was hard to pick a side as they both didn't seem to be all good or all evil but tended to dance the sidelines between the two. I was deeply intrigued to see how far this deception plot would go and it wasn't too surprising to figure out what would eventually happen!

I was a bit disappointed that the dragons were not as prominent this time around. I think we saw one every once in awhile and again at the end, but sadly this was not a dragon book as much as the first one was. But there was still a good deal of magic going on as we learned about Essie's predicament of being in hawk form and what it would take to set her free once and for all.

Once again we had some flashbacks that were interspersed between chapters. These are not as distracting as I thought they would be and I actually looked forward to these moments as they revealed quite a bit about the past and the connections these characters had formed back then to shape them to where they were at now, relationship wise.

Once again, the romance in this one was very much on the side. Again, we were teased with little moments of bigger things to come which was a nice change of pace again. A good slow burn does wonders after having so much of it just be put on display.

The ending was bittersweet. Thankfully there were no tears this time while reading. I still experienced an array of emotions but I was not all out bawling like I did in the first book and for that I was grateful! Lol. I am deeply curious to see what the final book of the series will be about as I see that it will follow Safire this time around! If you like fantasies with a magical twist and plots deeply rippled with deception and intrigue...and a dash of dragons then you will definitely enjoy this one! While it follows The Last Namsara in terms of plot details, you wouldn't really "need" to have read it in order to enjoy this one, but you will have a greater sense of who these characters are and where they come from.

Overall Rating 4/5 stars

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and The Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week's topic is: The Ten Most Recent Additions to My Book Collection

*in no particular order as my Goodreads list got a little convoluted at this point! Lol.

10. THE EMPRESS by Kristin Cast--Kristin was in St. Louis the first week of the year just after our snowstorm! This sounds like an intriguing read and I love the cover!
9. THE SKY WEAVER by Kristen Ciccarelli--Kristen is also coming to St. Louis next month, so I thought it was time to finally read her books on my TBR and I realized I didn't have this one, so I quickly fixed that!
8. TO SHATTER THE NIGHT by Katherine Quinn--a preorder that came in December! Hoping to read this beautiful duology soon!

7. THE STUDY OF FIRE by Maria V. Sndyder--another preorder book that came in and this one I did read! LOL!
6. FOR SHE IS WRATH by Emily Varga--this was the December Fairy Loot book, although it wasn't this cover. I love The Count of Monte Cristo so I definitely want to give this one a read!
5. IT WILL ONLY HURT FOR A MOMENT by Delilah S. Dawson--this was one of the Black Friday books I picked up for half off!

4. CHASING ETERNITY by Alyson Noel--another Black Friday purchase! This one was a keeper copy since I read a digital ARC. Still trying to locate my copy of the second book. It has to be in my storage unit, but for the life of me I could not find the marked box...so I am terrified it was added randomly to a box before I started keeping a sharpie in there.
3. BATMAN RESURRECTION by John Jackson Miller--my final Black Friday purchase! That 1/3 off totally threw me off my game as I had a list of books I was going to buy for 1/2 off. Sadly, not all were available so I guess it was good that it was only 1/3 off.
2. THE HALF KING by Melissa Landers--another preorder that came through and still needs to be read!

1. THE SONGBIRD & THE HEART OF STONE by Carissa Broadbent--Carissa came to St. Louis for this tour, so naturally I went and picked this one up but I think I'll be waiting for its sequel before starting it! Always feels wiser to binge a duology! Lol.
