Stacking the Shelves

Stacking the Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks! The meme is now hosted by Reading Reality.

Another week in the books and what a busy week it was! I was able to take off a day and half before the holidays when my aunt and half of her family came in! I hung out with them for the most part and then of course we had Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday. Never been a big fan of the holiday as I don't care for all that food to be honest. I made a nice dent into my Christmas shopping, got some things for my parents and have another thing I can buy (eventually) for them. Then I will be DONE! And it's not even officially December yet! I'm on a roll this year, but I still have ALL that wrapping to do now. Yikes. Lol.

I had forgotten about two preorders really as I knew I was wrapping up on my initial list of books for this year, so the nice little stack I got this week was super exciting! Lol.

The Wolf King by Lauren Palphreyman--my sister finally convinced me to read this one!
Ember Eternal by Chloe Neill--excited for a new Neill book!
Promised in Blood by Sadie Kincaid--I probably should've had read the first book first but LOOK at that cover and those edges! Those B&N preorder sales get me good!
Blood & Water by Alethea Kontis--didn't know about this one until Alethea mentioned it being on sale on Instagram, so I quickly snatched that one up! Yes, I bought ANOTHER kindle book! Shocking!

Then I got BOTH my Fairy Loot and Owl Crate books for the month! On the same day even!

I knew I would have this in the US version as well because it sounded awesome and I preordered it. With the limited skips with FL I decided I might as well get it since I wanted to skip the December book for sure.

I finally got another Owl Crate book. I don't know, lately I just have not been enjoying the covers they do. There's just something about them that leave me feeling...forlorn I guess. Even this one. I feel like it's so dark that you can't really tell what's going on. But then the other features are always so spot on! Not sure why things have to be so 50/50 here.

And then my FL copy of What Fury Brings also came yesterday! I still need to read this one but I've loved all of Tricia's books before and have every edition FL has put out of them as well, so I felt obligated to get this one too! Lol.

What Fury Brings by Tricia Levenseller--Fairy Loot edition!

And then for review from the author I received:

We Who Will Die by Stacia Stark (ARC)

THANK YOU Stacia!

And that was it for me this week! What all did you get?

Book Blogger Hop #386

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: What are the top five books on your TBR (to-be-read) list right now? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

MY ANSWER: The next five books I am tentatively, likely reading are:

As you might have guessed, Stacia Stark will be coming to St. Louis in January, so I am gearing up to read the books I've of hers on my TBR. As of writing this though I am anticipating that I am reading the first book of her one series featured here and then I need to obtain the rest of the series as well! Then I'm throwing in an ARC I need to read that is for early 2026 as well!

Review--Holly by Adalyn Grace

This Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition features an alternate jacket and case cover, full color endpapers, illustrations throughout, bonus content, and is printed in a festive colored ink!

A mysterious and magical holiday novella set in the romantic, Gothic-infused world of Belladonna, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Adalyn Grace. Features a special endpaper design, a printed case cover, and colorful interior art!

Something strange is happening at Wisteria Gardens, the magical manor that Blythe and Aris call home. All they want is a peaceful holiday season with their family, but a group of restless spirits is determined to threaten their festivities. With a new mystery to solve, Signa, Death, Blythe, and Fate must uncover what happened to Wisteria’s ghostly inhabitants and help the spirits move on before it’s too late.

Adalyn Grace follows Stephanie Garber's footsteps in this wonderful addition to the Belladonna trilogy with Holly, a Christmas novella that takes place after the events of Wisteria. It was yet another magical tale filled with holiday spirit and naturally, a few ghosts with a bit of a mystery. And I felt like there was also a special nod to Stephanie in the second chapter...or that's just the part of my brain that loves Stephanie talking!

This time around we receive points of view from all four characters, Blythe, Fate/Aris, Death/Sylas, and Signa. Blythe is planning a grand Christmas celebration at Wisteria Gardens, but unfortunately, a few ghosts to decide to crash the party and it will be up to Signa to figure out what is keeping them from moving on.

In the midst of this mystery, Blythe is trying to plan the perfect Christmas and Aris is struggling to find gifts for his family as gift giving was never his forte and Sylas is off being Death and trying to finalize some Christmas gifts as well.

This was yet another fun read! I binged the last of the Belladonna trilogy just last year and my poor memory was taking a beating trying to recall certain things but for the most part, I was able to "know" what I needed to know. Basically everyone is in their happily ever after era, and this is simply Christmastime and having all the "chaos" warranted to the holiday. Adding in some ghosts who cannot pass on yet was just the icing on the cake!

The illustrations added by Lotusbubble were beautiful! We had one large image each chapter and a border around the edges that continued to grow with every chapter! It was fun to see. I guess I would've liked a little more illustrations like we had with Stephanie's novella, but this was still nice as well for here we did get more storyline as well. So it's a bit of a give and take you could say! lol.

The pacing to this was pretty good! It's a lengthy novella, as the formatting of the pages is a bit smaller too so while the page count is high, the words per page are not like a full length novel either. So we get a bit of the mystery solving going on, then the planning for Christmas, the search for the perfect gift. There was enough to keep things busy in a good way. And of course, there was still time for kisses and romance between our star couples.

I did read the B&N edition of this one, and it seems like in another Stephanie fashion, Adalyn has left us with a bit of teaser that had me wanting to shout at the pages once I learned it was the last one after that particular parting line! Lol. Whether Adalyn is truly done with the series or not, it's clear her characters will still be living on and having their own adventures. And while I would always love to read them, this is truly the best way to end a series!

So if you're looking for a fun holiday read this year, be sure to pick up Holly! It's got holiday cheer, mystery, a bit of humor and of course, some romance! It is pretty much a perfectly, delightful holiday read to enjoy this year!

Books from the Backlog #163

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread.  If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. This is a fun meme hosted by Carole's Random Life in Books!

They’re dreadfully fond of beheading people here…

Gwen, Pete, and the others have escaped from Everland. Except the safe haven they hoped to find at Alnwick Castle doesn’t exist. With the Queen of England on her deathbed, Duchess Alyssa has stepped in, but things have gotten worse as the cure Doc created for the Horologia virus has mutated into something even more deadly. The only possible solution he can think of is to go back to the virus’s origin: an extinct poisonous apple.

Legend has it, though, that a tree bearing the apple might be found at the center of an impossible labyrinth hidden deep within Germany. A place no one in their right mind enters. With no other options, Alyssa sets out with only her sword, her wits, and the help of Maddox Hadder, a wild boy who oversees the castle gardens. To get to the center of the maze, she’ll be forced to battle monsters more terrifying than her darkest nightmares.

But can anyone truly survive the madness of the maze? And what if there’s no apple to be found there?

I picked up Wendy Spinale's Umberland in May of 2017, I had gotten the first book at BEA and decided to add the second to my TBR pile...but yeah, I didn't get the third one which I need to remedy! Lol. I liked the idea that the books draw from other fairy tales too! I still really want to read these books basically! Lol.

Can't Wait Wednesday #224

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

St. Medard's Bay, Alabama is famous for three things: the deadly hurricanes that regularly sweep into town, the Rosalie Inn, a century-old hotel that's survived every one of those storms, and Lo Bailey, the local girl infamously accused of the murder of her lover, political scion Landon Fitzroy, during Hurricane Marie in 1984.

When Geneva Corliss, the current owner of the Rosalie Inn, hears a writer is coming to town to research the crime that put St. Medard's Bay on the map, she's less interested in solving a whodunnit than in how a successful true crime book might help the struggling inn's bottom line. But to her surprise, August Fletcher doesn't come to St. Medard's Bay alone. With him is none other than Lo Bailey herself. Lo says she's returned to her hometown to clear her name once and for all, but the closer Geneva gets to both Lo and August, the more she wonders if Lo is actually back to settle old scores.

As the summer heats up and another monster storm begins twisting its way towards St. Medard's Bay, Geneva learns that some people can be just as destructive--and as deadly--as any hurricane, and that the truth of what happened to Landon Fitzroy may not be the only secret Lo is keeping...

I still need to read the rest of Rachel's mysteries that she's written, I think I've read one so far but the rest are piled up! Even with her break I couldn't get caught up! Lol.

Let's Discuss: Young Adult Reads

So another idea popped in my head that I thought was worth discussing! It's another odd one for you, these are the things that I think over once I read/see something that sparks the idea and then I truly do wonder what others think!

YA: A Genre or Reading Level?

So it was when I was taking some bookish survey of some kind and it had asked what genres do you read and listed several. One of them was YA...and I was like YA what? Paranormal, Fantasy, Contemporary, Mystery, Thriller? YA WHAT?!

Then I'm thinking, do you mean every genre within YA? I wanted to ask the survey: do you view YA as a genre and not a "reading level?"

I mean, I guess I can see it as yes, encompassing EVERYTHING! It's like when you ask do you read fiction or non-fiction? And it's like fiction, but let me tell you ALL THE GENRES I read within this fiction! Lol.

So I guess it just threw me a bit to see YA as a "genre" as I just thought of it as a "reading level." Like how we had New Adult Paranormal reads for awhile and New Adult Contemporary reads. There are genres within this targeted age level. Like Middle Grade Fantasy.

Basically, it is just a matter of perspective. Do you view YA as a genre or reading level category. Like with adult reads but we somehow just leave "adult" off by default.

What do you think? Do you view YA as an all encompassing genre or a reading level/targeted age of reader...what have you. The same with New Adult, even though that has also kind of faded away and just been consumed by the "adult" area of things. I prefer adding on the genre as YA to me is saying who the targeted age of the reader is meant to be and tells me nothing else of the book itself.

This week's topic is: THANKSGIVING FREEBIE: Top 10 Authors I'm Thankful for Meeting

*in no particular order
**I would normally share the picture I took with said author, but I have since removed them from my laptop as its hard drive was getting too full!

10. AMIE KAUFMAN & JAY KRISTOFF--yes, a 2 for 1 here! Lol. Meeting an author duo is always fantastic but even more so when they are from another country entirely!
9. JOHN CONNOLLY--another author from overseas that I was thankful to have met! I read this book ages ago and loved it. Still need to read its companion/sequel when I got to meet John!
8. LEIGH BARDUGO--I've actually met Leigh a few times now, but that was all before she hit Hollywood with Six of Crows! I feel like authors are harder to meet after that. I've actually not been able to see her again since Shadow & Bone went on Netflix.

7. TRACY WOLFF--I was actually reading Tracy's books for years before Crave came out and I did get to meet her at one of my last RT conferences before she came here on tour for Charm, I believe it was. And she still remembered me! Which was SO touching!
6. CARISSA BROADBENT--I had just starting reading Carissa last year and quickly became a fan! So I was super excited when she came on tour here last year as well!
5. AIMEE CARTER--I was a fan of her pretty much when I first read her debut here. Never thought I'd get to meet her as her tours were always on the other side of the country it seemed but last year I finally got to meet her and it was awesome!

4. MARIA V. SNYDER--I had only read Maria's first two books before I was determined to meet her! This was so long ago, I decided to fly out to PA to RT where she was attending, as I thought I'd meet her plus several other authors to at the big signing day and it was AMAZING! I surprised her with my visit, made a custom t-shirt and it was just such a great time!
3. REBECCA YARROS--for Rebecca's first tour with Iron Flame I somehow was lucky enough to get a ticket during the great chaos virus that was set over the website. Pure freaking luck. I, of course, was booted out of checkout due to a systematical error when I was trying to buy a ticket for her St. Louis stop earlier this year. THAT was a bad bad bad bad terribly awful rotten no good very very very very bad bad day. But that first time? Pure magic! Sadly it was just a meet and greet, but still pretty magical!
2. AMELIA ATWATER-RHODES--an author I never ever thought I'd get to meet, but meet her I did! It was the best! I was of course tongue tied, but oh my gosh I am still shocked that I got to meet her!

1. STEPHANIE GARBER--to set things back on course from last week, I bumped Stephanie back to #1! Lol. Yes, I am stoked that I have gotten to meet Stephanie several times now!

ARC Review--The Last Vampire by Romina Garber

Pride & Prejudice meets Crave when Austen-loving Lorena Navarro attends a new boarding school expecting to find her own Mr. Darcy, but accidentally finds the world’s last vampire instead!

Pride comes before the fall.

When a boarding school opens in a once-condemned Victorian manor buried in the woods of New Hampshire, Austen-loving Lorena Navarro enrolls in hopes of finding her own Mr. Darcy. Instead, she stumbles across a coffin and accidentally awakens the world’s last vampire.

After hibernating for nearly three centuries, William Pride is desperate to find his family—and clueless about the modern world. Relying on Lorena for more than just blood, he enrolls at the school to catch up on all he’s missed.

Soon, William uncovers a chilling truth: He is the last hope for his kind’s return to power. Torn between protecting the humans around him and fulfilling his fate, William must make a choice that could change everything. Will he sacrifice his species for love . . . or will he embrace his dark destiny at last?

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.

The Last Vampire is my first book by Romina Garber but certainly won't be my last. The title is what naturally drew me to this book because who could resist a book about vampires? While there were some common tropes and themes in this book, it's almost expected with a vampire romance, but it was still an entertaining story nonetheless.

Lorena Navarro and her best friend, Salma have received a scholarship to a very elite private school for their senior year. The school is an up and coming new private school that hopes to open to all high school students but for its first year, they are only teaching seniors. There were other odd happenstances occurring, such as no cell service or wifi, which seems odd in this day where technology runs rampant in education, but there were obvious reasons behind it.

Lorena and Salma both have a past that they are trying to escape from, which is how they landed at this elite school. They make new friends and on their first night, they break curfew to sneak around the school into the off limit areas and discover a secret library filled with strange books...and a coffin. A coffin that is not empty and contains one hungry vampire.

In the chaos of it all, Lorena is left behind and the vampire essentially makes her his familiar as he tries to comes to grip with the new reality he has awaken in. William was in a death sleep, a sort of prolonged sleep, but he can't remember why he was in it. So trying to adjust to a new world and new century is hard coming and he will need help navigating it and its new rules, hence the reason for letting Lorena live (as she made a cause for herself).

The story was interesting, I will give it that. Yes, we see those age old tropes of humans and vampires falling in love. We all know how those end, either in heartbreak or turnings. But William and Lorena's love story takes quite a bit of time as the two were thrust into an unbeatable situation. Their enemies to lovers journey takes quite a bit of time, which is the best way of doing it in my opinion. I've never been big on the insta-love trend.

The story is told through Lorena and William's points of view and I have to say, William's were the far more interesting chapters to read. Mainly because he is an age old vampire and he has quite a bit of history in his memory. One that will paint a different picture over American history as we know it. This aspect I found very intriguing and would've loved to know more about it, in a sense, but I can see why we didn't get as much detail because otherwise the book would've been lengthy with the history lessons.

The pacing to this book was a bit of an up and down rollercoaster. There were times when things were building up to really thrilling moments, or suspenseful happenings and then things would mellow out for awhile until the next turn. There were quite a few shocking surprises along the way, ones that I was able to predict and others I was pretty off on!

The ending was puzzling, but satisfying. As it stands, I believe we are looking at a standalone. But there is just enough tidbits here and there that there could be something more in the future if Garber decides to go down that path. If not, we are still left with a remarkable ending! Although, one teeny tiny thing that happened to a secondary character kind of threw me a bit, but it's nothing to fret over! I was just like where did that come from? But there you go!

If you're looking for that age old vampire romance story, then The Last Vampire is the book for you! Yes, you will see some of those common and overly used tropes from the vampire love stories of old, but it's still entertaining to see what other authors will do with these common themes. You can only do so much "new" with vampires, but I find all the stories to be unique in their own way. So if you're aching for the return of the vampires, like I have been, then be sure to add this one to your reading list!

I can't believe how fast this month is going! The holidays are coming and I'm excited even though I still need to get things for my parents, I need to give them some kind of list...which is hard as I need a house and I can't exactly ask for that! Lol. But yes, it's a fun time even if a bit stressful. I still enjoy the shopping and trying to figure things out for them and then the anticipation of seeing them open their gifts! I got my niece and nephew done, I'm just now "monitoring" those items to ensure they don't go cheaper! Lol. Work is doing the up and down thing, slow one day, busy the next. Looking forward to taking a few more days off next week with the holiday and all! I also went to a meet & greet style signing yesterday to see Emily Bain Murphy! I've seen her before when she was in conversation with Stephanie Garber! But her newest book that she was promoting sounded intriguing so I had to get me a copy!

Here's what I got this week:

The Ivory City by Emily Bain Murphy--SIGNED!

PLUS postcard art!

Then SHOCKINGLY, I bought an ebook too:

The Study of Storms and Magic by Maria V. Snyder--this was a bonus story Maria had at her anniversary party of Poison Study earlier this year. I sadly couldn't go because it was in PA. Le sigh, but at least I will have the ebook. I just have to remember that I have it on this Kindle thing. Lol.

Then I got my preorder gift for Seven Deadly Thorns:

it's a poster to color and I believe a temporary tattoo since the title is backwards!

THANK YOU Bloomsbury YA!

And finally, awhile back I decided to get me a Book Beau sleeve only because this design was TOO cute and it was on sale:

It's a Game Beau! Lol.

And that was it for me this week! Literally did not get the books until yesterday so it was a pretty scary week for the most part! Lol. What did you all get?
