MIA

(image borrowed from 10Best.com)

Dropping in to say that I will be MIA for the rest of this week! I'm going to Charleston, SC for YALLFest! If you're going too drop me a line on twitter and maybe we can hang out together, you know in line! LOL! Friday's usual meme will be posted, my StS will likely be held off until next week! Never know what I might buy while on vacation!

See you all Monday!

Random Thursday

Let's dive back into Weird But True by Leslie Gilbert Elman! This is a fun book so far, the only thing that nags at me a bit is there's no table of contents or organization to the facts. You basically see a few themes in them as you go, but you won't know until you read them! So let's see what we will learn today!

(image borrowed from Fast Growing Trees)
The Ginkgo tree comes in male and female varieties and it's the female tree that produces a fruit that contains butyric acid that smells rancid butter or vomit. Every one in two hundred male versions of these trees will also produce this "lovely" fruit.

Eww. Eww. Eww!

A group of ginkgo trees survived the atomic bomb assault in Hiroshima, Japan during WWII and are still alive today (copyright 2010).

Dude.

(image borrowed from Fine Art America)
Europe's autumn leaves are more likely to be yellow while those in North America will also turn red or orange. This color change depends on what happens in the chlorophyll in the leaves. Leaves will turn yellow when the green chlorophyll breaks down and allows the natural yellow pigment to show. Leaves turn red when a new red pigment called anthocyanin is produced. No one really knows why the leaves only turn yellow in Europe and many colors in North America.

The red ones are my favorite! So I'm glad I'm on the right continent for that!

(image borrowed from Youtube)
When we see products such as food, cosmetics, and toiletries like shampoo have a red or orange color, it was obtained from the crushed bodies of female cochineal beetles found in Peru, Mexico, and the Canary Islands. It takes 70,000 beetles to make one pound of dye.

Aka things I wish I never knew! Lol.

White bread was considered to be a higher quality than brown bread so medieval bakers would whiten their flour by mixing it with alum, chalk, clay, or even ground bones.

Again...things I wish I never knew!

Waiting on Wednesday

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

New York Times bestselling author Christie Craig returns with her next heart-stopping romantic suspense about a woman on the run and the man trying to uncover her secrets.

Police detective Juan Acosta doesn't only carry scars on the outside. He's filled with guilt and anger ever since his undercover job led to the murder of those he loved the most. Now he's living for one thing: revenge. That is, until Juan meets his beautiful new neighbor.

Vicki Holloway prides herself on being capable and independent, but her life is turned upside down when her sister Sara is killed by an abusive ex. Fearing for the safety of her niece, Vicki and the little girl go into hiding...resurfacing in Texas with new identities.

Juan finds his once-frozen heart thawing around Vicki, but he knows she's hiding something. Juan needs answers, but Vicki isn't talking. She has to keep her secrets if she wants to keep Bell safe, which means resisting her growing feelings for the sexy, scarred man next door. But when Juan's quest for justice brings danger to her door, divulging the truth might be the only thing that keeps her alive.

I enjoyed Christie's thriller from last year and am excited to return to this world again with other characters!!

Stacking the Shelves

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks! The meme is now hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality.

Well, as you can see my mini vacation--that I may or may not have mentioned, I can't remember if I did or not, lol--didn't happen. There's a bit of a family situation going on with my stepdad's side and he's with them a few hours away and my mom didn't want to go further out of town in case things happen. So we stayed in town sadly. We're hoping to reschedule the trip, but I'm not sure how things will go. But I've my YALLFest trip happening next weekend, so that will help get me through my short work week! Better yet, I'll have another signing on Monday when I return! Nothing positive on the job search, but I'm still keeping at it!

Since I didn't get to go out of town this weekend, I found myself on an in-town shopping spree! Finding deals, buying things like clothes on sale and other things I will eventually need, Christmas and Birthday presents for relatives...I'm making good progress! But of course, that's another dent into the bills and I haven't even gone out of town yet! LOL!

Anyways, here's what I added to my stacks this week:

Soul of Stars by Ashley Poston--I jumped the gun and just bought it even though I just started the first one! Lol.
Coached to Death by Victoria Laurie

Caraval Boxed Set by Stephanie Garber--of course I HAD to buy this one! I mean I'm a Caraval Collector after all! Lol!! It didn't hurt that I had a won a GC AND Amazon lowered the price AND they added an extra savings coupon! It was a steal!!

For review I received:

Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles (ARC)

THANK YOU Wednesday Books!

Then I FINALLY got my Fairy Loot box! I was getting worried about this one when for four or five days it just sat there with a label created!

I was pretty pleased with this box overall! Glad the book was more in line with the UK cover and had enhancements added to it! :D

Then I won the September Giveaway in the 2019 Series Enders Reading Challenge! I got an Amazon gift card which I immediately applied to my purchase of the Caraval Book Set!!

THANK YOU Holly @ Words Fueled by Love!

Then awhile back I had ordered myself a book sleeve--which, it's been awhile since I last bought one. Well, sorta--August, I checked! ;) Before that it was even longer! But look at what I bought:

THE HAUNTED MANSION: Madame Leota Book Sleeve! THE HAUNTED MANSION!! My most favorite ride at Disney World! And Madam Leota is just wicked cool! So I had to buy this one and I was able to get that extra large size I struggle to find these days, so it was an added plus!

This beauty came from Enchanted Extras By Bri!

That was it for me this week! Next week's StS will be postponed since I will be out of town for YALLFest! I'll a do a two week haul the following week. Hope you all have a GREAT week ahead!

Book Blogger Hop

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: Do you read classics? If so, what is your favorite? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

MY ANSWER: Not really. I do have a few on my TBR pile that I want to read at some point, Frankenstein and The Haunting of Hill House are two. I still would like to read the rest of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale collection too.

If I had to pick a favorite I'd say Dracula and The Count of Monte Cristo were tied for #1!
