Stacking the Shelves--The I Don't Know What Happened Edition
Stacking the Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks! The meme is now hosted by Reading Reality.
I do not know what happened this week. Lol. Normal life wise, it was the same. Work was up and down with being busy and not so busy. We're likely going to get busier from here on out for awhile so hopefully the day will go by faster then! Lol. Book wise...yeah...I lost control again? Maybe? Lol. The preorder sale from B&N was not as damaging as before. I tried not to order too many 2026 books just yet as I am waiting for the holidays and to rack in those gift cards! Lol. But I did order a few 2026 ones, not too many, and then I ordered a few 2025s that slipped past me. Then B&N's Labor Day double punches sale suckered 2 books out of me, I impulsively joined Book of the Month for obvious reasons and then I got a few preorders as well. This doesn't include the bit of shopping I did yesterday, which after looking over things I've decided I am returning a good chunk of it. I was too impulsively with these non-book things and they just need to go back because I really don't need them. Lol. So that will be a bit of relief once refunded!
But here's what I got this week from the bookish realm:

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread. If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. This is a fun meme hosted by Carole's Random Life in Books!
She won her freedom. Can she win a war? Commander Rhys Rykus is facing court martial. With his career on the line, he’s ordered to keep his distance from the brainwashed Ash and protect her from afar, but sinister elements threaten her safety. He accepts a new mission that puts them on the same warship, knowing it will take all his self-control to fight his feelings for her. Lieutenant Ramie Ashdyn is no stranger to fighting for her life. Still under the influence of the Coalition’s brainwashing, she cares little for her own safety. She merely wants to protect the Coalition… and reconnect with Rykus. Rykus knows how important Ash is to keeping all of them alive, but the target on her back is enormous. Will the growing threat to the Coalition take down Ash and Rip’s only shot at love?
I added Sandy Williams' Shades of Honor to my TBR pile in November of 2016! This was a series I believe she self-published and was three books long, so I need to get the third book at some point! Haven't gotten around to reading the first one yet either still. It is a bit different from my usual kind of read but I loved Sandy's Urban Fantasy series so I wanted to give this one a try too!
An imprisoned prince. A vengeful queen. And a battle that will determine the future of Elfhame.
Prince Oak is paying for his betrayal. Imprisoned in the icy north and bound to the will of a monstrous new queen, he must rely on charm and calculation to survive. With High King Cardan and High Queen Jude willing to use any means necessary to retrieve their stolen heir, Oak will have to decide whether to attempt regaining the trust of the girl he’s always loved or to remain loyal to Elfhame and hand over the means to end her reign—even if it means ending Wren, too.
With a new war looming on the horizon and treachery lurking in every corner, neither Oak’s guile nor his wit will be enough to keep everyone he loves alive. It’s just a question of whom he will doom.
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black comes the stunning blood-soaked conclusion to the Stolen Heir duology.
Ask and you shall receive, apparently! In Holly Black's The Prisoner's Throne, we continue Wren and Oak's story, but this time, you guessed it, Oak is at the helm! I can't help but wonder what this duology would've been like if it was dual point of view throughout. I feel like it could've been a little stronger (for me) in its storytelling.
Oak is now Wren's prisoner, by his own design. He cares for her and he fears what his family might do to her if he were to leave. But as it turns out, his family is coming to rescue him with a battalion behind them. Oak needs to make extra nice with Wren to prevent an all out war from happening. So he does what he does best and tries to charm her.
But Wren has always been wise to Oak's way, but there's so much backroom plotting going on in this one, that sometimes it's hard to tell who's plan belongs to who. Oak has his plots, Wren has her plots, and other characters have their own too. When Oak proposes marriage to Wren she accepts...but knows that there is something else happening here than a simple proposal. Wren and her entourage, including Bogdana, travel with Oak to return to Elfhame for the upcoming nuptials which still need to be blessed by the king and queen, Oak's sister, Jude.
I feel like things moved a little faster in this one. There was so much I felt like we didn't know about Oak in the first book, and this one became quite eye-opening, but alas, with Oak at the helm, Wren is practically in the shadows. I know Holly wrote the original trilogy from Jude's point of view and then we got a novella from Cardan's, but I really felt like this duology could've benefitted from a dual point of view between Wren and Oak. I feel like things would've been explained so much better and we could fully realize what was happening. Which was basically faery schemes and plots.
It also felt like in this series there wasn't much time for romance. Yes, there's still heated tension brewing between Oak and Wren and we do get to see a bit of that expand more. But, I don't know, I guess I was just expecting more. True, Oak and Wren have got a boatload of issues to work out with one another. Trust between these two was definitely hard to find, which could make for a more complicated love affair.
The pacing was once again pretty tame. There was buildup, there were sedentary moments. We had plots and schemes and some good faerie intrigue. It's about what you would expect from a Holly Black book all in all.
Things are resolved nicely with a bow and all. We know what Oak's course is at the end. And from what I heard we get a hint as to who the next book of Elfhame will be about. Which should be pretty exciting if I guessed right! Lol. Needless to say, if you are a fan of Elfhame, this is a duology you will want to read...if you haven't already. I am clearly way behind on everything! Lol.
Overall Rating 4/5 stars
Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.
A vampire who can’t remember his past and a witch with secrets of her own hit the road in this zany, cross-country romantic comedy from beloved author Jenna Levine.
Reformed bad witch Grizelda “Zelda” Watson had hoped to never see another vampire again when she slipped away to sunny California for a fresh start. She'd grown tired of them and their nonsense ages ago. But when a vampire with amnesia unexpectedly shows up on her doorstep with a letter from her old friend Reggie, and asks for her help, she can’t say no. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Peter Elliott is tall and gorgeous, looks great in yoga shorts, and has the kind of dark hair and surly expression Zelda’s been a sucker for for hundreds of years.
Peter isn’t completely harmless—he is fanged, after all—but he’s harmless enough, and soon becomes the only person in Zelda’s new life who knows the truth about what she is. If she can help him decipher the cryptic notes in his journal, the only clues to his lost memories, she might as well try before sending him on his way.
But when an alarming message from Peter's past coincides with a clear sign that Zelda can't keep running from her own, they embark on a cross-country road trip for answers—only to find what they're looking for in each other.
I still need to read the second book but this is just one of those fun series with different characters in the same world that you can easily dive back into. So I am definitely looking forward to reading this one at some point! Lol.

CHALLENGE 1: 2025 Discuss Challenge
Eighteen-year-old Mirabella “Mira” Owens grew up in Timber Plains, Kansas hearing all about the local legend—that werewolves had, many years ago, traveled to their small Midwest town to protect humans from the growing threat of a vampire enclave. Just a story of course, a fairy tale, one Mira had stopped believing in when she was young—just like she stopped believing in the idea of her mom returning, after she up and left without a trace when she was only thirteen.
Mira is grown up now, starting freshman year at the nearby Lakeland University. College feels normal, exactly the thing she’s been craving most... except for one particular classmate: Julian Santos, a mysterious boy with long hair, golden eyes, and a coldness that seems directed exclusively at Mira for reasons she can’t understand and he won’t explain.
When Mira receives an unaddressed letter from her mother, she’s told the world isn’t as it seems. She suspects her mom might be telling the truth when she stumbles across strange animal tracks on a hiking trail, and when she’s miraculously saved from a twenty foot drop by the one and only, Julian Santos.
The problem? Julian would have had to jump the length of the cliff to catch her, making him incredibly fast and strong beyond belief. When she confronts him about this, he denies everything.
But when a Blood Moon rises, Mira soon finds herself caught in the middle of an ancient, magical war, with Julian on the other side of the line. She discovers there’s much more truth to the old town legends than she could ever have anticipated—and her family’s historic role in it will change her world forever.
BLOOD MOON is a dark and thrilling, intensely romantic ride, a fresh take on a werewolf love story for a new generation of paranormal romance readers, and is the first book in a series. It is set against a high-stakes paranormal backdrop—a world ripe with secret identities, rich supernatural lore, and a forbidden romance... that comes with a deadly bite.
I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.
As soo as I saw the title, Blood Moon by Britney S. Lewis I knew I had to read it! Knew nothing else about it, but once I did read that description I was hooked! I love me a good werewolf book. Yes, vampires are my first love, but werewolves became a fast second love! Sometimes they top vampires too, it just depends! Lol.
Now you might be looking at that cover, seeing that title, and thinking is this Twilight but with a werewolf twist? In some essence, I'll say yes. This reads very much like a Team Jacob love letter to Twilight. Now I say this as someone who really didn't like Twilight all that much either, so me giving high praise to this book is still saying something! Lol. There are some very clear moments in this book that I just felt like were all the nods to moments that felt very Twilight-like. But with Blood Moon, I didn't get annoyed with our heroine, so again, this is saying something people!
Mira has just gotten a full scholarship to a college that is less than an hour away from home and it feels like a good enough path to go down. She doesn't really know what she wants to do now that she graduated high school. Things have just been tough for her ever since her mother left her and her father. At times, Mira struggled to adjust and she knows her father felt the same way as there was no hint as to why her mother left, no reason, no note. She just up and left one day and it's haunted Mira and her father ever since in their own ways.
As you might figure out, when Mira starts classes, she runs into the enigmatic Julian Santos. But things get off to a rough start when he basically tells her to leave the school and never return. Luckily, Mira isn't some girl who just takes to being bossed around, so she stays and goes on with her life. Things begin a path of normalcy until Mira receives a mysterious letter from her wayward mother and that's when things begin to slowly spiral into chaos.
We do learn that in this small town outside of Kansas City, the town has a history that's riddled with werewolves! I pretty much loved this right away because it was very intriguing. While we don't get a lot of details, there's just bits and pieces to help form a story involving werewolves...and vampires and an age long war.
Naturally, these things end up being important further down the line as Mira becomes involved with the world of the supernatural. More moments that will feel a little familiar, whether that's enjoyable, comical, or annoying depends on where you fall on the Twilight scale. Think of it more like the parody movie, Vampires Suck if that helps! Lol.
Things buildup in an epic way and the ending will present more questions than answers but it looks like we'll get at least one more book out of this possible series. Whether it's a duology or longer has yet to be revealed but I'll be sticking around as I am intrigued enough!
Another thing I loved about this book was how close to home it was! Mira's new friends are even from St. Louis and there was just so much Midwest nostalgia to this book that had me giggling and wondering what little things I picked up on were actually based off what I thought they were or if it was just coincidence.
There is romance to be sure! A possible, maybe love triangle and I loved how Mira's friends told her to deal with said love triangle! Lol. For the most part, Mira seems to be wrapped around Julian, but never fear there is another possible contender for her heart. But as to which "team" will win this time, is unclear. With the way things left, it's anyone's game and there's always a possible third unknown, not even introduced yet contender! The possibilities are endless!
While Blood Moon may feel like a werewolf ode to Twilight, I feel like it's also more than that. There's definitely a bit more lore to dig into with this one than that other book. I will say that some of the history and name usage did turn me around a bit. While we had werewolf and vampire thrown out, other terms were used as well and it did get me a bit mixed up with the who's who again? But I feel like this will become more clear in the next installment. As a lot happened in the end and we were given a lot of information in a short amount of time. Needless to say, the next book is going to be absolutely epic!
If you're a fan of good, old-fashioned YA Paranormal reads of the early 2010s then Blood Moon is right up your alley! Werewolves have always been an interesting character type and I loved with Lewis did with them! Eager to see where these characters will go in the next installment!
Overall Rating 4/5 stars
