Book Blogger Hop

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: Recommend one horror novel for non-horror readers. (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

MY ANSWER: Ooh fun one! My first pick I'd say is Slasher Girls & Monster Boys! This a really fun collection of short stories that are creepy and scary! This way you can just take your time reading the creepy and get a break every now and then! I'd say most are more eerie than truly scary!

Another favorite is The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich! This one is told in a different way through video clips, diary entries...that kind of thing! So it can be easy to tone down the scary when there's not an actual video playing in your book! Lol! It was a rather cool and eerie ghost story and I loved it!

Random Thursday

We're nearing the end of the Sports and Leisure chapter of The Little Book of Answers by Doug Lennox. It seems like things are geared more towards sports than leisure, though to be honest I don't know what I would expect from a "leisurely" factoid!

(image borrowed from YouTube)
"Caddies" has quite the winded history in how golf assistants got this name. In France, during the medieval ages, first-born noble sons were called "caput" or head, of the family, while the next son was called "capdets" or little head. They were the ones that were sent to the military. The English "capdets" became "cadets" which the Scots then abbreviated to "cads" or "caddies", meaning useless street kid who could be used to carry a golf bag around all day long.

Wow. That's just mean.

(image borrowed from BBC.com)
GOLF initially meant, "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden." This was basically the name used for all the exclusive men's clubs. The clubs were for men who wanted to get away from the women for some time and enjoy themselves. When they started chasing a small ball around the grounds, the game quickly became golf.

Yeah...this is just making me dislike golf even more!

Billiards were always played on a felt covered table much as it does today. In the 19th century off-track gamblers would play billiards while waiting to hear the results of the horse races. At times, the players might have pooled their money together to bet on a horse they liked the chances of, it would help up the winnings if they won or soften the blow if they lost. The "pooled" money would be counted on the billiards table and eventually, the gamblers soon referred to it as the pool table.

Now that's rather interesting!

(image borrowed from Amazon)
Winning "hands down" has nothing to do with card games or the one you see above, lol. It actually refers to horseracing. In the early days, when a jockey was close to winning the race and it was a "sure thing", he would let go of the reins and let the horse have free reign to run over the finish line. By dropping the reins, he'd be putting his hands down in winning!

Never knew that!

(image borrowed from WSYX)
Winning the "jackpot" means winning a large amount of money through gambling. This word came from a game of draw poker in which the game couldn't "start" until a pair of jacks were laid down in the first move. This could take several hands to happen and each time it did, the players had to add to the ante. When a pair of jacks was laid down the game could officially start with the betting and the winner would take the "pot" that was started from the "jacks" being laid down.

(image borrowed from Wikipedia)
The expression "according to Hoyle" refers to one Edmond Hoyle, an Englishman who wrote a rule book for the card game whist in 1742. His rules were used to settle arguments during that one particular game. It wasn't until 1897 when Robert Foster published "Foster's Hoyle" which included the rules to all other card games as well. "According to Hoyle" soon meant according to the rules of any game, be it in business or personal situations.

(image borrowed from Wikipedia)
"To turn the tables" is a chess expression that dates back to 1634. This would be when there's a dramatic turn in events when the losing player makes a sudden recovery. This switch would make it seem as if the losing player had physically turned the table around by becoming the winning player.

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog post by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights releases we're eagerly awaiting.

The Renegades Trilogy continues, in this fiercely awaited second installment after the New York Times-bestselling Renegades by Marissa Meyer, author of the Lunar Chronicles.

Time is running out.
Together, they can save the world.
But they each other's worst nightmare.

In Renegades, Nova and Adrian (aka Insomnia and Sketch) fought the battle of their lives against the Anarchist known as the Detonator. It was a short-lived victory.

The Anarchists still have a secret weapon, one that Nova believes will protect her. The Renegades also have a strategy for overpowering the Anarchists, but both Nova and Adrian understand that it could mean the end of Gatlon City - and the world - as they know it.

I was all set to read this one by the end of the year back to back with Renegades when I heard it was a duology. Now that it's a trilogy it throws a wrench in my plans! I now need to decide if I should read them back to back and then wait for the third one or just binge them all next year! Decisions, decisions!

Mini-ish Review--Relic by Gretchen McNeil

From Gretchen McNeil, the author of Ten and Possess, comes this teen horror novel perfect for young fans of Stephen King, and Lois Duncan's I Know What You Did Last Summer.

For Annie Kramer, the summer before college is bittersweet—both a last hurrah of freedom and the last days she'll spend with her boyfriend, Jack, before they head off to different colleges. So she and her friends plan one final adventure: a houseboating trip on Shasta Lake, complete with booze, romance . . . and an off-limits exploration of the notorious Bull Valley Mine.

The legends of mysterious lights and missing persons on Shasta Lake have been a staple of sleepovers and campouts since Annie was a kid. Full of decrepit bridges that lead to nowhere, railroad tunnels that disappear into the mountains, and terrifying stories of unexplained deaths and bodies that were never recovered, Bull Valley Mine is notorious and frightening—perfect for an epic conclusion to their high school lives.

The trip is fun and light—at first. But when a deranged stranger stumbles upon their campsite, spouting terrifying warnings and pleas for help, it's clear that everyone is in danger. And when their exploration of the mine goes horribly wrong, Annie and her friends quickly discover that the menace of Bull Valley Mine doesn't stay at Shasta Lake—it follows them home.

As one by one her friends fall victim to this mysterious and violent force, Annie must do whatever it takes to discover the ancient secrets of the mine and save her friends . . . if she's not already too late.

I finally, finally read Gretchen McNeil's Relic! It's novella length, longer than a short story and shorter than a novel and it's the perfect creepy, horror read for Halloween! It was a story I wasn't expecting to hit me the way it did, it was totally surprising and shocking! I will admit to still being a tad confused with the history and lore of the legend within the story, but I blame that for stretching out the reading of this one to over a week long due to a vacation!

Annie and her friends and boyfriend decide for their last summer together before heading off the college they would take a trip to the legendary mines. Bully Valley Mines isn't a place people go to, in fact, it's really forbidden to go there because of all the strange and dangerous things that have taken place there over the years, but naturally, the teenagers decide to forgo the rules and do what they want. The majority of them don't really believe in the curse anyway.

After an eerie encounter with a strange man the night before, they are almost scared off from their trip, but they all persevere and head there anyway. Strange things happen in the mine when they get separated, but it's not long before they all find their way out and head home.

Then the first body is found...that of the man that accosted them, one who's mummified body is claimed to be years old, though it was very much a lively body when they saw it. And that is only the beginning of the horrors to come. Soon Annie realizes something very, very strange and wrong is occurring when the next bodies that start dropping are those of her friends.

Annie is the only one who seems to believe that the curse they all wrote off is real and if she doesn't figure out a way to stop it, there's no telling who else she might lose. It will be up to her to save what friends she has left.

Wow. Just wow! This story was pretty intense! There was a heavy creep factor going on and yet, at the same time it was very mysterious because you couldn't quite pin down what was happening. Was it supernatural in nature or a simple madman-psychopath going on a killing spree? It's hard to say considering Gretchen's previous works! Lol! And that's what I loved about this one!

I didn't realize that Relic was already over two years old, nearing its third "birthday" in March and just whoa! Because that ending was just slightly teasing. Is there more story to tell? Since it's been almost three years, I am kind of leaning towards the no, but you never truly know with authors! Needless to say that this bizarrely twisted and creepy read was a perfect choice for Halloween reading time! If you like a good creepy book that keeps you guessing long past its finale, then this is definitely one you will want to check out asap!

ARC Review--Fury by Rachel Vincent

1986: Rebecca Essig leaves a slumber party early but comes home to a massacre—committed by her own parents. Only one of her siblings has survived. But as the tragic event unfolds, she begins to realize that other than a small army of six-year-olds, she is among very few survivors of a nationwide slaughter.

The Reaping has begun.

Present day: Pregnant and on the run with a small band of compatriots, Delilah Marlow is determined to bring her baby into the world safely and secretly. But she isn’t used to sitting back while others suffer, and she’s desperate to reunite Zyanya, the cheetah shifter, with her brother and children. To find a way for Lenore the siren to see her husband. To find Rommily’s missing Oracle sisters. To unify this adopted family of fellow cryptids she came to love and rely on in captivity.

But Delilah is about to discover that her role in the human versus cryptid war is destined to be much larger—and more dangerous—than she ever could have imagined.

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.

There has never been a Rachel Vincent book I didn't love and Fury is definitely continues that streak! This is the end of the Menagerie trilogy and it's about to go out with a bang! No one will escape from this story unscathed and I mean that in terms of characters and readers because omg this is the end and Rachel pulls no punches!

Delilah and the rest of her friends who escaped the Spectacle are basically living on the lam in hiding. They are doing everything they can to stay under the radar and just survive. It doesn't help that Delilah is also ten and half months pregnant...and yes, I said ten and half! Poor Delilah doesn't follow a human pregnancy, since she's furiae and her baby daddy, Gallagher is a red cap. What that exactly will mean for her baby has yet to be revealed and likely won't until after her birth--for Delilah refuses to call the baby an "it" and refers to said baby as "her".

What makes this story slightly different from its predecessors is that instead of the multiple points of view, this time it's most Delilah and a third person account of something that happened in 1986. It involves cryptids and a very dark history. As the accounts continue, we slowly, every so slowly, see how it connects to present day.

Delilah and her friends want nothing more than just to live an ordinary life, one without fear and having to constantly look over their shoulders. Delilah wants that more than anything for her unborn child as well. She and her friends also want to rescue those that they have been separated from, starting with Mirela and Lala. In the meantime, Gallagher is searching for the man who made him and Delilah perform for his entertainment and basically led to their having a child together.

This book was sooo emotional for so many reasons. It's the final book of the series and as I mentioned, Rachel pulls no punches. It was gut wrenching to say the least. The friction between humans and cryptids continues to grow more hostile and we will see that is nothing new, based on the flashbacks of the mysterious character we will get to know. This is basically like two stories that slowly form into one.

My one regret from this story was the lack of time for romance between Delilah and Gallagher. They were brought together by forces beyond their control and throughout this series I've been rooting for them. While they have a tentative bond in place already, there was always room for something more. But they had many hills to climb before they could get there. And then that ending...wow, just wow. Rachel, you truly know how to write a book that totally tugs at all one's heartstrings!

The pacing to this one was unique, for awhile we don't really know what's going to happen with our main group. Yes, things happen to them while they try to make their rescue attempt and in the meantime we are seeing things from the past. And it does contain some plot points that make for quite the head twist if you are not paying close attention. And though I was paying as close attention as possible, I'll admit some of the bits of info we learn did throw me through a loop! Though by the end, it all makes sense and it helped to clear up that fogginess I had going!

The ending...this ending was unexpected, yet really not if I think about it. There were clues and hints that led to the epic conclusion, yet I still didn't quite put it all together. And when it happened...yeah. I will say that this ending was right and I really cannot touch upon that anymore than that.

Rachel Vincent has been one of my favorite authors since day 1, way back when I decided to give Stray a go all those years ago. And since then, she has kept me so entranced with whatever world she is writing in! The Menagerie trilogy was no different! It's definitely a series that makes you see society differently, though it's a world of pure fiction, you have to wonder...what would happen if it were true? Could we learn from the mistakes that the previous (fictional) society made or would be doomed to follow the same path! Whoever said fictional stories didn't make you think about real life realistically obviously didn't read many fiction books!

Fury was a heart-racing read from start to finish and I am saddened that the journey is over. But it just makes me more excited for Rachel's next adventure to begin! Hopefully that wait won't be too long!

Yes, I'm still reading this one! I was too exhausted every night last week to get much reading done. And even in lines I didn't want to use up my battery for it. The lines weren't all that bad either, so reading in line wasn't a necessity! Lol. Finishing this one today though!

GENRE: YA Horror
RELEASE DATE: March 8, 2016

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week's topic is: Favorite Villains

*in no particular order

THE LOVES:

10. THE DARKLING--I always felt like he was a somewhat misunderstood character. I loved him so and yeah, I was rooting for him through the very end!
9. CATH--a villain who wasn't all that villainous. She had a rough go of things and who can blame the Queen of Hearts now for her anger after seeing what happened to her?
8. ADELINA--another villain who didn't start out intending to be a villain. She was another character I was rooting for through the very end!
7. XIFENG--another of those characters who you just can't help buy sympathize for! She had a horrible childhood and you were practically rooting for her to commit all her evil acts. Will be interested to see how things will go with the next installment!

THE LOVE TO HATES:

6. MALONE--ever since he came onto the page I never liked him! He was such a douche. He only got worse too as the series went on!
5. THE KOMIZAR--I mean how could you not hate this guy?! I wanted him dead pretty much from the getgo!
4. PETER--I always find it interesting when the story twists and Peter becomes the villain! He was kind of scary like at times, but I mostly just hated the little twerp.

THE BATSH*T SCARY ONES:

3. RAHIM--the boy who tried to take over Javan's identity. He was way too eeriely calm in his villainy. He was the one person you didn't want to cross because he was unpredictable!
2. JACKS--a complicated villain to be sure! He was very, very creepy! Like sociopath creepy!
1. THE COMMANDANT--another completely vile woman! One who you don't want to cross because daaaammmn, she's one scary beetch!

And of course, the most dastardly villain of all time and who forever sits above the top villains...

ARC Review--The Darkest Star by Jennifer L. Armentrout

When seventeen-year-old Evie Dasher is caught up in a raid at a notorious club known as one of the few places where humans and the surviving Luxen can mingle freely, she meets Luc, an unnaturally beautiful guy she initially assumes is a Luxen...but he is in fact something much more powerful. Her growing attraction for Luc will lead her deeper and deeper into a world she'd only heard about, a world where everything she thought she knew will be turned on its head...

#1 New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns to the universe of the Lux in this brand new series, featuring beloved characters both new and old.

I borrowed this ARC from one of my most amazing blogger friends. My review is completely honest and voluntary and I received no compensation for this review.

I was a huge fan of Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Lux series and when she announced a spinoff, I was over the moon! The Darkest Star is the first book in the new series of undetermined length! What we do know is that it takes place in the Lux world about four years after the events of Opposition! And wow, has it been a long time since I read that one! Though, other than not remembering certain people when the appeared, I’d say that this one is pretty easy to follow if you don’t have time for a series re-read.

Evie lives in a world that is now inhabited by Luxen. After the invasion and war that took place afterwards, four years have gone by and things suddenly seem to be at peace. All Evie wanted to do was go out with her friend and have some fun at Foretoken, but the evening didn’t quite start off pleasantly when she meets Luc. Luc comes off as arrogant and annoying (much like the Luc we all know and love) and just as she’s getting ready to tell him off, the club is raided. But the raid was only one of the things that happened that night. During the chaos that ensued afterwards, a girl from Evie’s school goes missing.

Evie continues to have chance encounters with Luc over the next few days and he is rather familiar with her. She notices odd looks and sometimes he lets things slip out in conversation. She continues to have feelings of deja vu. Something very odd is happening when it comes to Luc. And soon, Evie will become more immersed with the world of the Luxen and the other “aliens” that came to earth.

Amid this new revelation when it comes to the Luxen, we also have what looks like a series of murders happening. Bodies being found with their eyes burned out, in a very Luxen fashion. This soon causes strife with the Luxen who are in society and the high school as well. It’s very clear that these murders were done by a Luxen or someone who wants everyone to think it was a Luxen.

The mystery element to The Darkest Star was by far greater than I expected! There’s definitely a lot more going on than what gets discussed or shown. More fodder for future books I expect. And then there’s the whole mystery that is Luc…well, mystery for Evie that is. It seems like everyone in the story knows what’s going on except for Evie and you can’t help but feel bad for her. Though since my memory is terrible, I was right with her in the clueless department! Lol! But in a way, it was kind of fun that way. I’d have to ask someone with a better memory or who’s a faster reader and can re-read the Lux series if they knew what was going on while I was in the dark.

Like every JLA book I read, I have to say that she does romance incredibly well! I really liked how different Evie and Luc’s relationship was. Luc was head over heels for Evie long before she was, and I felt like his way of going about expressing his feelings was a lot different than another alien boy we all know! Evie and Luc had chemistry that was for sure, even though there wasn’t many romantic interludes between them, their chemistry more than made up for that! But since this is Jennifer writing, you know there will be some kissing!

I was also very happy that a familiar face made an appearance in this one! I mean, it wouldn’t quite be a Lux world book without him! It’s nice to see that not much changes in four years! Lol!! Totally made my day that he was there every now and then too!

We get a nice conclusion in this one! One that is satisfying for a first in series book, but still leaves you with enough fodder for more storytelling to come! While not everything is answered and we’re left with a few pretty big questions left dangling, I can safely say that I am not screaming in agony like I did after Opal! It’s definitely not an Opal kind of ending which is relieving to say the least. Then again, we’re only at book one and who’s to say what torture Jennifer might put us through over the next few years! As always, I am totally game!!

The Darkest Star was by far one of my most favorite reads of the year! This is a book that Lux fans will not want to be without! I love when there’s a spinoff series to an already loved series because it always has that familiarity in a world you already love, yet it takes you to new places with sometimes new characters! This will be a most delightful series indeed and I cannot wait to see where Jennifer will take it!

Overall Rating 5/5 stars

Stacking the Shelves

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks! The meme is now hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality.

Hey all! I'm back from my week in paradise! Lol! I had the most amazing trip ever! Already trying to figure out when I can go back! And even wanting to give Disneyland a try...just to compare! LOL! I'm still totally exhausted too. I was waking up an hour or so earlier than necessary to get myself to the right park on time for opening moments. Add in that I had to wake up at 2:30am yesterday to catch my 3:15am shuttle to the airport, I think it's safe to say that I will be going to bed super early tonight! As it is I already took a cat nap this afternoon for three hours and still feel lightheaded and exhausted! But it was tons of fun!

I cam back to quite the pile of goodies on top of the souvenirs I bought for myself! Here's what I ended up getting this most happy week:

A Sorrow Fierce and Falling by Jessica Cluess--keeper copy!
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo--the gorgeous collector's edition!!

Then I got some preorder goodies as well:

The Grim Lovelies (double-sided) tote bag!

The Archenemies poster!

I also got my Owl Crate...which wasn't as spectacular as I had hoped because I was spoiled for it yet again. Sigh...I can just vaguely remember the first few boxes I received that were total surprises! Those were so nice. Getting a box and knowing its every content isn't as magical. But I won't spoil it here for you if you've managed to remain unspoiled. I wait for the unboxing week the following month before posting anything!

Overall though I liked most of what was in here! I knew going in the contemporary retelling of a classic wasn't going to be for me and two of the companion items aren't really my thing either, but the rest was pretty amazing!

And then just a peek at some of my souvenirs from my trip! I went a little overboard! Not pictured are a spirit jersey, a photo album, my Minnie Ears headbands (though one of which I bought ahead of time!), some items of necessity, and my pressed penny collection! I've collected those for years and as I got older, decided to buy more when I go to places with them!

a Mickey pashmina, the Haunted Mansion playing cards, plus Haunted Mansion music box, a Halloween slap bracelet that was just too cool, some more pins for my lanyard; it's a Slinky Dog Roller Coaster, a Toy Story/Haunted Mansion combo, and a special Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party pin with Goofy dressed as popcorn, then there's the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party canvas bag, and a piece of Cursed Aztec Gold from Pirates of the Caribbean--because I'm a coin geek!

Then at Universal I got my wand that I had choose since I was once again passed over twice. What really aggravated me was that the kid that was "picked" already had a wand! But it was still fun. I actually picked the wand that was chosen for me by Pottermore or as close to the picture I had of it! It's a 12 3/4 length wand made from Pear wood with a Phoenix Feather core. Oh yes, I blindfolded myself to print out my answers to serve as a backup should this very situation happen! Lol!

Then I also bought my coin set that I was wanting from Gringotts and another chocolate frog! I haven't opened it yet. I was afraid to as I was forced to wait in a warm car with it while I was being transported back to my hotel. I'm scared he won't look froggy even though I stuck him in the fridge upon returning!

And that was my most amazing and magical week! I'm still recuperating from it all. My legs are sore and there's sunburn on my arms and whatnot. Plus being totally jet-lagged and exhausted from an early flight! I might not really be around today, but since Monday is a workday I will be back in blogging action then!
