Let's Discuss: Travel Limits

 

Today, I bring another weird question for you and it's regarding traveling for author signings! How far are you willing to go to see your favorite author in person? What if it was a multi-author signing, like a book convention? How far are you willing to travel?

How Far Will You Go?

It's no surprise here that I am willing to do so some serious traveling if it means meeting favorite authors! I do one-day road trips all the time to see authors in neighboring states! I'll drive up to Naperville which is a little over 4 hours depending on traffic and such. I'll drive to Nashville or Memphis which is also a little over 4 hours! Kansas City was another 4 hour drive! And you know other states that touch MO are all doable too! Lol. 

Although, I did sadly have to talk myself out of an OK visit next month. It's an 8 hour drive one way, there's only 4 authors I want to see in a mixed multi-author setting and I'd only have 2 hours to see them all amidst all the other attendees and there was a 2 book from home limit, which I obviously surpassed since there were authors I've never met or hadn't seen in YEARS! The ends just didn't justify the means in this incidence. 

A flight has never deterred me either! The first time I heard about the now deceased RT Booklovers Convention, I convinced my mom to go with me to Pittsburgh because I wanted to meet a SUPER FAVORITE author of mine and I told her there were tons of other authors there that I'd love to meet! I paid for our plane tickets and hotel for the weekend and asked if she'd just cover our food. She said sure! Lol. She's also gone with me to drive all the way to Savannah, GA for another multi-author event, we made it into a week's vacation to visit Charleston--long before I knew of YALL Fest--as well before going over to Savannah! 

I once also flew to Boston solo for a mini convention, as in, it was just for the day, to meet several favorite authors including the author who started my love for vampire reads, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes! So that was TOTALLY worth it and the somewhat scary walk back in the dark to my super creepy hotel room. Yeah, the only reason I chose that one was because it offered an airport shuttle, was priced reasonably and was relatively close to the airport. The area wasn't super sketchy, but I am a nervous worry wort when I go anywhere after dark solo. Lol.

And just last year, my friend and I both flew out to CA to attend Stephanie Garber's Spectacular Holiday party which was a LOT of fun!

So honestly, if I have the funds and vacation time--which I usually do because I hardly ever take full week vacations anywhere these days--there's no limit, in the continental USA, that I will go to see a favorite author! Of course, I do have to see what the costs of travel would be and then justify the means and whatnot! But I am always willing to travel far to see an author I've never met, or attend a convention which I sorely miss doing. I have yet to actually get tickets to any of them these days. But yeah. Here's hoping a 2026 convention pops up with a great attendance of authors I read and new to me ones that I can actually GET tickets to attend!

Stacking the Shelves--The Back to Normal Edition

It was yet another week. A much quieter one. I swear I was good this week! Lol. I just had preorders this week and one even got delayed! So I didn't even get everything! Yes, I am infuriated by this. I would be even more steaming if this author whose book I am waiting on was still going to the YAM Fest event I am going to next weekend! Sadly, Julie Kagawa had to pull out and I was SOOO looking forward to seeing her. I even spent 2 hours in my storage unit digging up all her books I needed signed! And now I have to haul them all back unsigned! It's her newest release that the Distribution Center of No Return decided to hold onto for 2 extra days and only sent out to head to my local PO late Saturday afternoon. Sooo aggravating because it's late again. Then there's the reminder that Julie had to cancel!

But this is a week of signings for me! I am going to see Hannah Whitten later this afternoon which ought to be fun! Then tomorrow Sarah Beth Durst will be in town and I got my ticket for that! Then Saturday is the big YA event up in Naperville that I am going to! I have like 5 or 6 authors in attendance who I have never met before so I am excited...even if Julie had to cancel. But it should hopefully be a good week! *knocking furiously on wood*

Here's what I got this week:

 Of Flame and Fury by Mikayla Bridge--one of my last minute preorders from the B&N sale! It was on my watchlist but then I just caved and preordered it! It's a seriously gorgeous cover! Gorgeous edges and the story sounds like fun too!
Conspiracy of Vampires by Miranda Thorn--another surprise for you here...it's a kindle read! This popped up in my Book Bub email and it was a free download! It sounded like a fun vampire read so I thought, why not? Onto the TBR pile it goes!

And that was it for me this week! Well, that and one more DVD that I found on sale that I've been wanting, been watching for it for almost 2 years now! Lol. But see, I was pretty darn good this week!

This week's question is: What is your opinion on modern artists' interpretations of deceased authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Louisa May Alcott, Charles Dickens, and Jane Austen? Do you think these interpretations represent the authors correctly, or do they disrespect the authors? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

MY ANSWER: I haven't always read the particular previous author's original work to truly know what today's author is doing with it. But in essence, I like them. I like how today's author takes the previous author's concept and gives us a fresh new tale. Sometimes they are modern retellings or fantastical retellings, but I find them enjoyable! Sometimes they may even be better than the original, especially if there's a paranormal or fantasy twist! Lol. But I feel like it could even inspire the reader (whatever their age) to go back and read the original classic to see what today's author got right and what they did with their own creativity. 

I'm still trying to dig up my book of fairy tales so I can read the Brothers Grimm original tale before I start a fairy tale retelling. Just because it was one I am not overly familiar with. I also want to read Frankenstein at some point as I have at least one retelling or inspired tale of that story as well! So it can do wonders for reversal reading too!

I finally picked up Emily J. Taylor's Hotel Magnifique as it's one that has been calling to me since it released! It was a magical tale filled with mystery and intrigue and another great sisterly bond. The Caraval vibes were strong with this one! While I wasn't as swept away and held captivated by the story, it was still an enticing read that kept me turning the pages trying to uncover its mysteries!

Jani has always wanted to visit Hotel Magnifique, the magical hotel that travels throughout the world visiting new places everyday. Getting an invitation is nearly impossible, for only invited guests are allowed inside but then Jani sees that the hotel is hiring and she sees this as her way in along with her sister who has a gift for singing.

When they both secure their jobs inside the famed hotel, they are awestruck by all the magic and wonders that they see. The hotel owner, Alastair is a man of mystery himself. But soon the shine begins to fade a little when the sisters are separated, Jani to work as a maid, and her sister, Zosa, is to be a singer and is sequestered with the performers. However, Jani begins to learn that not all is well with this hotel and its supposed magic.

Guiding her along this mystery trip, is Bel, a bellhop at the hotel who is keeping his own secrets as well. This is truly a place where you can trust no one. And of course, these two butt heads quite a bit and you just know that animosity is going to turn into something more soon enough, and sure enough we see that in a nice slow development!

I will also admit, that I was reading this during times of chaos on occasion so when I would come back to the story I felt like I was already forgetting previous details. Again, this is a me issue, I really must stop inviting chaos into my life. Lol. So there were many times where I felt like I wasn't sure of what all was happening, but within time I'd jump back on track. Of course the ending left me with a few puzzling questions, but I think those were meant to be left unanswered.

All in all, this was a mesmerizing and mysterious read! It's captivating story was touching and gripping! I truly did enjoy its intense Caraval vibes with the sisterly bond and the need to save the other. The added touch of romance was a blessing as well! You can't ever go wrong with that! It was a fun and engaging read, I just wish my surroundings were better when I was reading it.

I added Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld Chills to my TBR pile in October of 2016! I LOOVED her Otherworld series and while I had read a few of her short stories/novellas from the occasional anthology, there were still plenty I missed so I bought the collections she put out almost 10 years ago now! Lol. I still hope to read them one day and one day, far into the future, get caught up on all the backlist titles I have of hers. Most are short story collections/novellas like this but I do have one Subterranean Press series to read still too!

3. MR. KISS AND TELL by Rob Thomas & Jennifer Graham--TBR choice! I read the first Veronica Mars novel post TV show and enjoyed it! I refuse to ever acknowledge the reboot show as canon after how it ended and on top of that they never even made another season! Utterly pointless!
2. MISTER MAGIC by Kiersten White--yes, another TBR book.

1. SISTERS OF BLOOD AND SPIRIT by Kady Cross--stretching it on this one as I ran out of honorific titles! But you know, you refer to nuns as Sisters, so there you go! 

Let's Discuss: Dream Library

 

So I guess where I had 5 months of great ideas and topics to discuss about I have hit a burn out period this summer. Nothing has been popping up in my head lately to turn into a discussion so I turned to the helpful list of topic ideas and thought, let's try this one! At least to get one other post done for this week!

Dream Library

So as I've mentioned on past occasions here and there, I am looking for a house of my own. It's very slow going as there's only so much I can afford on my own and I don't want an apartment style setup as living in the Midwest has given me a great fear of tornadoes. The anxiety I get every time sirens go off is real and insane and I can't explain it. It's just not good. I want my own personal basement where I can go at these times and just have that little layer of safety. Hence the reason why I can't just find an apartment and call it home.

So anyway, my search for a house that's affordable and in a relatively safe neighborhood continues because all the homes I can afford are in the not safe ones. It's an endless nightmare. But at least I can still save up more for a down payment as I continue looking for that perfect for me home!

But back on topic! As I continue this search I have built up my dream library room in this forever home of mine. I am thinking of putting it in the basement, hoping to find one that's finished or mostly finished or that I can have finished with my parents' help as they are very handy in that area. I want the whole room to be wall to wall bookcases! I want to have all my beautiful books on the shelves displayed proudly, spines out with the occasional edges out if its super gorgeous, which you know I have those too!

I want to decorate my shelves also with bookish decor that I have accumulated over the years but haven't seen in awhile because it's packed away in storage. That will be fun day to uncover it all again and figure out where I want it! I also have bookish artwork, some of it framed that I'd like to display. I figure these can go over my shorter bookcases.

Also, not gonna lie, if I can manage to get a rolling ladder, I WANT THAT! Lol. Yes, my dream of acting out Belle's bookshop moment is one that I frequently would love to live out but have never done so. Also, not gonna lie, partially scared to do it because I am looking at the ladder and thinking, will you hold up for this dream moment?

I also want an extra room, hopefully downstairs as well that will be my "Caraval" room aka the Stephanie Garber collection room! Lol. Yes, a SEPARATE room adjacent to the main "library" where I will house all my gorgeous Stephanie Garber books AND decor pieces because omg I have a lot! I remember that from before it went into storage! And I have so many beautiful dolls Britnee made from Pages of the Night! I am going to need to find a display stand for all of those as well! I have maps and artwork galore that I have framed over the years that I want to hang on the walls. I feel more excited to decorate this room than the main library, but still super excited for that one as well!

Yes, it all goes gloriously well in my head...I just need to find that house so I can get going on things but alas, that front is moving extremely slow. I haven't had any hits on the system I was put into that shows you houses that meet your needs/wants in months! Every time I see something that looks like a possibility that when I email my agent within 24 hours after I've done my own research on it, the house already has an offer and I am like OMG! It's always when I think I've found one that is livable and doable and I'd be happy there and I just want to see it in person to double check it all, it's gone! That was from earlier this year on the last few hits and pretty much since then it's been silence. I still get hits from my last realtor but sadly those were all immediate no's just from pictures.

What a week. I have to say...I was NOT good during all these book sales online! I am loath to willing buy books off Amazon but I will admit, I caved a bit. They had older titles I kept looking at there were marked down and then there was there Buy 2 get 1 free sale to compete with Target. I caved. I signed up for a free trial of Prime to get stuff quicker and to save a little more on top of it. I am looking at my stack of books on my desk as I write this and am inwardly wincing. In my defense I was left unsupervised! Lol. I even picked up a couple of movies that either finally went on sale or had a coupon to make them a nearly decent deal and then another was a part of the of the buy 2 get 1 sale. Not sure how it all worked out among 2 movies and several books!

I also went to a book signing on Friday night which was a lot of fun! Megan Bannen returned to St. Charles and I of course had to go to get a signed book to go with my first two! And I also got my Fairy Loot copy extra signed on the title page versus the signed tip-in page. Feel like I might be one of the only ones who does this. Just a weird tick of mine wanting it signed on the actual title page versus an add-in one. That was a lot of fun! Megan is so funny and I love listening to her stories about writing and other weird things!

So are you ready for this? Because I also (GASP!) bought ebooks because there were extra kindle points on these and I had a few I've been meaning to buy for ages so...yeah...but again...I was left unsupervised. Who in their right mind leaves an adult reader unsupervised during multiple book sales? 

Here's what I bought:

The House Where Death Lives edited by Alex Brown--this is an anthology that takes place in a haunted house and each author wrote a story that takes place in a different room! It sounded so cool and might have been a slightly impulsive purchase despite my eyeing it for months.
Bewitched by Laura Thalassa
Bespelled by Laura Thalassa--my sister had recommended these books to me and I had been eyeing another of her series. These older editions were on sale super cheap and were in the Buy 2 get 1 sale, so I was obligated to buy the first two books. Yes, I bought these two knowing I'd have a mismatching set when I buy the 3rd, but had to save money since I was going crazy, lol.
When Devils Sing by Xan Kur--this sounded spooky and delightful!
Predatory Natures by Amy Goldsmith--a preorder...so that was past me's fault! Lol.
Murder Land by Carlyn Greenwald--one that came onto my radar recently and yup, another sale on top of the B2G1!
Rose in Chains by Julie Soto--I forgot about preordering this one, but luckily it was a little bit on sale at B&N this week, so I picked up a copy!
A Forbidden Alchemy by Stacey McEwan--another one that came onto my radar recently. I almost bought it last week but then Amazon had it on sale again! Can't pass up that price with a SE hardcover! I almost bought the pretty Walmart one, but they had an IRREMOVABLE sticker emblem on it and you know how much I LOATHE those! They are the DEVIL as Bobby's mama would say.
Terror at the Gates by Scarlett St. Clair--SIGNED edition! I was on the fence about this one, so I thought maybe I'll wait for the pb as I do enjoy St. Clair's writing! But then I saw B&N had signed stocked copies and yeah...another cave but it was a wee bit of a sale too, plus my 10% so that helped! Lol.

The Other Side of the Mirror by Dana Evyn--I had been eyeing this one for awhile and while it wasn't so much on sale, it was another of those, just throw it into the car! There's an event I am lowkey hoping to attend if I can score tickets and Dana will be in attendance so hopefully I didn't jump the gun on buying this pretty book!

Then the ebooks I picked up were:

Trapper Road by Rachel Caine & Carrie Ryan
Darkwater Lane by Rachel Caine & Carrie Ryan--I thought I would just skip these last two but since I would like to see how the series would've ended I'd like to see what Carrie did with Rachel's story. Rachel was one of my fave writers and I miss her so much! But I had heard good things about how Carrie wrote these and I thought Rachel might have had some notes or something for Trapper Road at least, but I could be remembering that wrong.
The Witch's Christmas Catastrophe by Kristen Painter
The Gargoyle Beguiles the Beauty by Kristen Painter--I am SO behind on this series but I attempt to buy the books as they come along if I remember...which I clearly didn't get to these at release week, but at least I have them now! It's such a fun series I just need to remember that I have a kindle with books on it! Lol.

And then I got my Fairy Loot book for this month which was actually one I was kind of curious about, but as I look at my huge stack this week, I cannot say when I might read it! Lol. And no worries, no spoilers here, just an old picture of the box I use for these stand-ins!

And after over a year and a half (since my last win in late 2023) of entering Goodreads contests and never winning, I FINALLY won one! Then I had to wait 2+ months for this ARC, and yes it was driving me nuts, but it finally arrived and I should have enough time to work this into my reading queue before the author comes here on tour next month!

Then I also picked up some fun swag at the Megan Bannen signing:

Then I found the coolest bookmark ever that I added to my never ending collection:

Then another item I picked up on Amazon and led me to start a trial of Prime was that a diamond art poster I was eyeing was on sale and there were only 2 left, so yeah...I caved. I know I said I was unlikely to ever do one of these again, but I HAD to get this one!

Yes, it's a JAWS diamond art poster! It's a whole lotta blue but luckily size wise, it is smaller than my last one and there does appear to be blank white space with no diamonds needed so it shouldn't be as hard as my last one! Lol.

And that, plus a few movies that were on sale that I wanted copies of, is what I got this week! I usually like owning DVDs of my favorite movies as I always get annoyed when they hop around between all the streaming services. I'm not likely to have one of those when I get my own place, so DVDs it is for my entertainment! Lol.

I'm wincing again at my pile but also in love with every book I got, but yeah...I was not very good this week. Lol. What all did you get? Did you do any damage during the multiple sales? We'll talk about my preorders at another time, I'm not ready to talk about that yet. Lol. Those at least I can cancel later if I have buyer's remorse!
