Review--Prince of Thorns & Nightmares by Linsey Miller

 

For fans of Disney Twisted Tales and Serena Valentino's Villains comes the next book of the Disney Prince Young Adult series.

Prince Phillip’s known from a young age that his destiny has already been decided for him by his father, King Hubert. Although, having magic and working with fairies to retrieve powerful ancient artifacts would be much more enjoyable if he didn’t have to deal with her every night, a girl named Briar Rose who appears in his dreams on the other side of a mystical thorn maze. Phillip doesn’t know how he can be so annoyed by a person he can’t even see but having to hear the mysterious maiden’s laughs and jabs at him every time he goes to sleep is worse than any nightmare. But Phillip is starting to realize that Briar Rose isn’t so different from himself, and maybe they can change both of their fates one dream at a time.

I finally picked up Linsey Miller's Prince of Thorns & Nightmares and was totally blown away by this story! I am huge Disney nerd. Love it and all the classics. What I love about this Disney Prince series is how we have the princes that we didn't really get much of from the movies, I'll admit, Eric had more of a presence in The Little Mermaid, but Phillip in Sleeping Beauty? Yeah, I was definitely ready for this story! I would absolutely love one for Snow White's prince but I have a feeling this series might be done.

We begin at the beginning, we see the movie play out with the birth of Aurora and then her sudden shuttle off to safety with the three good fairies and then we jump forward nearly 16 years years later. It's just a few weeks shy and Phillip is off having his freedom before he's set to wed the princess he only ever met once as an infant. He's known all his life practically that he will have to protect Aurora and defeat Maleficent at some point, but what he wants most of all is a life of his own choosing. Yes, he's a prince and he can't escape that, but being able to live his life his own way is important to him.

It's then that he and his friend Johanna--who is just strictly his friend, who is a squire in training--run into three fairies--not the ones we all know--who say they are there to help Phillip. They want to help him find the magical shield and sword that will help him defeat Maleficent and in order to do that, he will have to learn how to use his magic. Yes, his magic! According to these fairies, he has magic and he only has a handful of days to learn how to wield it, find the sword and shield, and be ready to rescue Aurora should it be necessary.

Meanwhile, for the past several years Phillip has been having odd dreams. He's had them nearly all his life. In them there's a wall of thorns and on the other side of it, he can hear the voice of a girl. He's tried talking to her over the years, but they are never able to communicate...until today! Suddenly he's talking to the girl of his literal dreams and learns her name is Briar Rose! He learns he has quite a lot in common with this peasant girl and a sort of frienemyship forms

I truly love the take Miller gets to do with these stories! I've read 2/3 so far and have loved them! It's so refreshing to see what the prince was thinking as I feel like in the movies we always focused more on the princess and the prince is just the one who saves them. This book largely acts as an alternate point of view to the movie we all know and love. We get to see what Phillip was doing up until the day he meets Briar Rose in the forest! I positively love how Miller incorporated parts of the movie and gave them another spin! The whole song number "Once Upon a Dream" takes on a whole new meaning and with Phillip's insight we realize the little things we missed in the movie! Lol.

Truly these Disney Prince books are a work of art! I mean the details that Miller includes shows how much she knows her source material! And giving a fresh breath of life to the princes we all crushed on as children is the icing on the cake! I love a good twist on a Disney movie, be it new point of view or a Twisted Tale! It's always exciting to learn about the things we didn't "catch" in the movies. This is definitely a series all Disney fans should read because it's simply fantastic!

Years ago I read Andrea's YA werewolf series and loved it! That was actually another one of the first ARCs I ever received! I even still have the "secret" old book that came with it that was part of the reveal for the series. It was before Instagram, so yeah, can't remember much about it. I have a post on here somewhere! Lol. But I love me a good werewolf book and this one is on my list of NEED it!

If there was one debut author I was looking forward to reading this year it was Jordan Stephanie Gray! As a fan of all things paranormal I was craving her YA Werewolf Romance, Bitten, like you wouldn't believe! Luckily I received this ARC at an event that saved me the pains of waiting too much longer!

There's an intricate background to the werewolves in this series and we get some insight into it before the story kicks off. They very much live in "the shadows," you could say and don't often dwell long in the "human" world. They have their own hierarchy and status quos...it's pretty detailed and we aren't given everything in an info dump, so don't worry about that. It just helps to know ahead of time to prepare yourself for the story at large.

It was supposed to be a fun party at the beach. Vanessa and her best friend, Celeste were going to have a good time and Vanessa was hoping to dance with her crush before it all went horribly wrong. A fight breaks out among some of the teens, including Celeste and when they decide to leave afterwards, they are accosted by a wolf, a large and terrifying wolf. As we already know, only Vanessa walks away from the attack, but she's been bitten.

She's quickly rushed off to a school for werewolves that hides among a tourist site in Florida. After surviving the transition, she's informed by the Queen of the North American pack that she's been given a gift...of sorts. She's being allowed "to live" and learn to harness her new abilities all because her transition left her with purple eyes...a rarity among werewolves where eye color plays a part in some of their roles.

Vanessa is filled with rage though. She is not happy about her new life circumstances nor does she forgive that some wolf among this pack at the school killed her best friend. And she's gunning for them...whoever they are and she's got one major suspect in line already. If you know me, I am a bit of a sucker for a good revenge story! I don't encounter them too often in my genres, but I was salivating with this one! Of course, in this sense, it's more of a mystery for revenge as Vanessa has to find her whodunit. And then there's the matter of who bit her and thus putting her on this course.

Naturally, life at school is not easy for her as being a bitten one is looked down upon for the most part. But Vanessa just so happens to catch the eye of Sinclair Severi, the queen's very own son, the crowned prince and soon to be alpha. Sparks and passion fly between them, but naturally, Sin is already engaged to be engaged to another. Evie is the wicked girl who Vanessa has dubbed her number one suspect for murdering Celeste as it was Evie who Celeste got into a fight with. But she's going to need to find irreputable evidence before she can even think of going to the queen.

This book was so intriguing! I loved how it kept drawing me in inch by inch. The pull was relentless and I loved it! I love a good mystery and I love a good forbidden romance. Thing gets heated between Vanessa and Sin but he's of course "forbidden" since he's to be promised to another. It's a political alignment and Sin makes this clear to Vanessa early on. 

But then you throw in Sin's cousin, Calix and things get even more interesting. Calix is our brooding shadow. He's sworn to protect Sin and there's reasons for that that you will learn. It's a role he's always known he was meant for. While I feel like we were destined for a love triangle with this setup, I really didn't get that vibe. Yes, there were a few intense moments between Calix and Vanessa, but nothing that bordered love triangle territory where a "choice" was going to have to be made. Which I was extremely grateful for.

The pacing to this one was pretty moderate. Not slow, not fast paced, but a good moderate pace. We learn things, we get bombarded with shocks here and there, there's romantic interludes here and there. The mystery continues to build and it seems there might be someone conspiring against Vanessa in her quest to out a murderer and there are other plots at play! It's enough to give you a bit of whiplash, but in a good way.

And then there was the ending. I was not at all prepared for this ending! Yes, I began to make my speculations about this and that and while some of those proved to be true, there was still some things I was missing and those revelations were still pretty eye-opening! But I had pegged a few things down early on and midway that I loved feeling victorious about! Lol!

Needless to say that Bitten was a pulse racing read that kept me on my toes! It's was a book that kept me guessing and speculating and still took me by surprise by the end! Jordan Stephanie Gray is the ultimate debut author of 2025 and a has found a place on my favorites shelf for sure! Werewolves are making a comeback and Gray is their Alpha! Bring on the sequel as I am craving more!

MY ANSWER: No I do not. I took Spanish in school for a few years but couldn't grasp it enough to continue. So I basically know some standard vocab words, lol. I also took Latin, but that information has faded even more than the Spanish! So nope. I just stick to reading my English books.

But it so doesn't stop me from buying a German or French or Spanish or Iranian title if the cover is stunning! i.e. see my Stephanie Garber collection! Lol.

I added Forever, Again by Victoria Laurie to my TBR pile in December of 2016. I love Victoria's books so essentially that's what I added it to my pile! Lol. I thought this story sounded intriguing with the two stories from past and present that may or may not be mirroring each other in some aspect. I really can't remember and as I read the blurb the girls have some similarities, but hopefully only the good parts! I will eventually see at some point! Lol.

Review--Secrets So Deep by Ginny Myers Sain

Ginny Myers Sain's Secrets So Deep has been on my TBR pile for too long! I remember enjoying her debut, Dark and Shallow Lies, so picking up her sophomore book was natural. In this book lies a very mysterious backdrop filled with more secrets and lies and perhaps a ghost or two.

Avril is set to go to a drama camp for summer, but it's more than just a summer camp. It's a very prestigious program led by the talented Willa Culver. It's the camp Avril's mother went to, it's the camp where Avril's mother also tragically died and Avril almost died too. Her father wasn't overly thrilled with her going, but Avril was insistent.

The story gets off to a rather mundane start once we get the backstory of Avril's mom and how she died. It's the big mystery that will eventually become more apart of the story, but that's not until later. There were some slow moments in this one with Avril going back and forth with camp activities and the big upcoming play, but in between we did get these mysterious odd moments. Avril sleepwalking and having no idea how she came to be in one location, seeing things out of the corner of her eye, spectral figures...it was pretty creepy. I did wish we could've gotten a little more ghostly action, but what was there was just enough of a creep factor to make you question what you were seeing.

Along the way, Avril makes some friends who I at first thought might turn into competition for the play, but ended up being genuine friends which was nice. And then there's Cole Culver, Willa's son, who has a history with Avril from their time as children back when Avril's mom was friends with Willa and they were at the campgrounds together. There's definite chemistry between the two and an air of mystery as well. Cole seems like a guy who knows things but is up for telling them right away.

We do eventually circle back around to the mystery of Avril's mother's death and it was a doozie! I started making speculations and I feel like I had it pinned down at one point, but it's been a long week (crazy busy since I started reading this one) and I can't quite remember when I thought I had this down!

The ending, naturally, was the epic climax when all gets revealed and relayed. It got a little intense at times and of course I had a few miniscule questions at the end, nothing major that would detract from the mystery but just those "why" questions one tends to have with murder mysteries. All in all, this was an enjoyable and spooky read, perfect for this time of year. Yes, I wish there could've been a little more ghostly encounters but there were some and a deadly mystery to boot that leaves you unsure of who to trust. So, all in all, Myers Sain did her mystery writing duty!

Things I Notice When I Write Blog Posts

Okay, so I was writing a blog post and I noticed how many exclamation points I was using and thought...is this too many? I mean, yes, I am very excited and enthusiastic about whatever I was writing about. I think it was just a short commentary on my Thursday meme, Books from the Backlog and I was looking at it and going whoa. I ended nearly every sentence with an exclamation point. So I went back and deleted a few. Lol.

But honestly, I am enthusiastic while talking about books. But then I always wonder, does that come off with my writing when you can't hear tone? We use exclamation points for loudness too, they could be used in angry shouting matches. But obvious, anger isn't a thing here when I am happily talking about books! 

How about you? Do you notice you use exclamation points when you write a blog post? Or I guess any other kind of particular punctuation marks?
