This week's question is: Do you judge an author's works based on their political stances? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)
MY ANSWER: Honestly, I try not to. I try not to dig into author's social media to find their political views. I honestly feel like they maybe should sometimes keep those separate from their career? I don't know. It's tricky. They tell you never discuss politics at the family dinner table and I almost feel like that should extend to authors and their readers. I guess it just depends. I don't feel like they need to keep quiet about them either. I guess what I mean is they shouldn't use their careers as a soapbox to discuss their political views. We are all entitled to have them, that's fine and dandy. I don't even like discussing what I believe in when it comes to politics in public settings online.
So I guess in a sense I don't??? But again, I don't go digging into their profiles to see what their views are to begin with. I know other people glom onto these things, but I don't want that to detract from my enjoyment of their works.
This topic is actually making my head hurt and spin as I don't want it to come off like I support authors who want to support hateful things. For the most part, the authors I follow do tend to follow the humane beliefs and that is good enough for me.
