Another idea popped into my head the other day and it was about fairy tale retellings! I had been scrolling on Instagram when one caught my eye and then a whole rambling discussion started going in my head and I decided to use it as a post! Lol.
Fairy Tales & Retellings
I love fairy tales! Some of my "origin" reads were fairy tales themselves! I loved Disney as a kid, but I also loved the OG fairy tales too! Retellings of fairy tales usually catch my eye, and I am likely to always pick up the book to see what it's all about when I know it's a retelling of Peter Pan, The Beauty and The Beast, and The Little Mermaid! While their Disney versions are vastly different from the original tales, I can't help but intrigued by their retellings or books that were inspired by these tales.
Especially when we want to turn Captain Hook into an anti-hero or at least sympathize for him! Honestly, ever since the show Once Upon a Time with Colin O'Donoghue as Captain Hook, I was totally for this idea of Hook not being the villain we always thought him to be! I loooove these kinds of stories the most! Lol.
With the others, the standard retellings are fun, modernized versions or what have you. I know I've read an origin story, so to speak, about the sea witch in The Little Mermaid. Other times of course we get the retellings straight from Disney themselves, which are still a lot of fun!
I do think among my collection of books I probably read/have the most of Peter Pan retellings or versions where Hook is our storyteller!
How about you? Do you enjoy fairy tale retellings? Do you have a favorite fairy tale where you're likely always to pick up its retelling in whatever form? And by "pick up" I mean at least read what it's about, not necessarily "read" read.
