Review--Phantasma by Kaylie Smith

Caraval meets Throne of the Fallen in this spicy dark romantasy where a necromancer needs help from a dangerous phantom to win a deadly competition, only to find their partnership puts her at risk of breaking the game’s most vital rule: don't fall in love.

When Ophelia and her sister discovers their mother brutally murdered, there is no time to grieve: Ophelia has inherited both her powerful death-driven magic and enormous debt on their home. Circumstances go from dire to deadly, however, when Ophelia’s sister decides to pay off the loan by entering Phantasma—a competition where most contestants don’t make it out alive and the winner is granted a single wish.

The only way to save her sister is to compete. But Phantasma is a cursed manor, with twisting corridors and lavish ballrooms, and filled with enticing demons and fatal temptations. Ophelia will need to face nine floors of challenges to win... if her fears don’t overtake her first.

When a charming, arrogant stranger claims he can protect and guide Ophelia, she knows she shouldn’t trust him. While Blackwell may not seem dangerous, appearances can be deceptive. But with her sister’s life on the line, Ophelia can’t afford to turn him away. She just needs to ignore the overwhelming, dark attraction drawing them closer and closer together.

Because in Phantasma, the only thing deadlier than losing the game is losing your heart.

I waited too long to read Kaylie Smith’s adult debut, Phantasma! Honestly it was love at first sight once I saw that gorgeous cover! Then I read the description and immediately my brain was getting Caraval vibes, which you all know how much I LOVE that series! And then there are ghosts and I just knew this was a book I had to read!

Ophelia and Genevieve’s mother just died suddenly and now the girls own their family home, but they soon learn their mother had debts and the bank has come calling. If the girls don’t get enough money to buy back their home in a month, they will lose it.

Their mother was also a Necromancer—and don’t worry, Smith provides a hierarchy of the paranormal beings to give you an idea of who’s who and what’s what—and now that power has transferred to Ophelia since she’s the oldest. Her sister, Genevieve has never really shown that she has any gifts, so she’s been free to live her life as she chooses while Ophelia has had a more sheltered upbringing.

But when Ophelia learns Genevieve has run off to enter Phantasma, she makes the quick decision to follow her. Phantasma has always been a deadly game that moves around quite a bit. It will stay in one location for nine nights as players play the nine levels; nine levels that are meant to represent the nine levels of hell. There can be only one winner and that winner will have a wish granted by the end. (Sound familiar?) Clearly, Genevieve is doing what she thinks best to save their home.

Ophelia enters the game but soon learns that contestants are put into groups for the starting levels and she cannot talk or even look for her sister until after she completes level seven. It’s not long before Ophelia meets Blackwell, a Phantom of the manor who makes her a bargain; help him find his heart and key that keeps him bound to the manor and he will help her win the game. If she fails, she owes him 10 years of her life. Ophelia feeling like she will need all the help she can get to win these deadly games, agrees.

This book was so freaking awesome! The Caraval vibes were strong in this story and I loved it! It’s not at all an adult Caraval, so don’t think that. The fact that we have two sisters trying to play a dangerous game to win a wish is what gives it that vibe. But here there be ghosts a plenty from devils to phantoms to the regular evil old human beings! This book will grip you tight and not let go until the very end!

There was a bit of mystery to this book. Mainly with the game itself and Blackwell of course! Blackwell doesn’t have his full memories and by finding his heart and key, he’s hoping those will be restored to him. Then of course there’s the spicy romance! I wasn’t quite expecting the level of spice that we got, but then again, I probably should’ve. But there you go! Needless to say that the chemistry between Blackwell and Ophelia is intense! While things flare up between them rather quickly, I still enjoyed the banter between them that made for a different kind of relationship building.

The ending to this was pretty mind-blowing! I was wondering just how things would eventually wrap up as I saw the second book focuses on Genevieve, so I knew Ophelia’s arc would be concluding and it was astonishing! We do get some answers to the mystery that is Blackwell and it was astounding!

This was the first book I read by Kaylie Smith and it will not be the last! Her writing was a delight to read! Her characters are very relatable and real and don’t feel like overly perfect people. The plot was intense and the romance was spicy, and of course we had a good heaping of paranormal people within the story to make it a positively delightful read indeed!

If you’re looking for that spicy paranormal romance with danger and intensity of all kinds, then look no further than Phantasma!

Stacking the Shelves--Boxes of Awesomeness!

Stacking the Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks! The meme is now hosted by Reading Reality.

Another long week, but I am taking a mini vacation this weekend as I've family in town so that will be fun! I had a book signing this past week AND I have another one tomorrow AND one next week in which my sister AND my cousin have decided to attend, so I am riding a nice little reader high right now! Lol. The work week was the usual blah. It's the slow season and I am totally fine with that, I enjoy our little lull because one we start getting towards July and August it will ever so slowly begin to pick up and then it's chaos until maybe mid-late November! I'd say September-November are our chaotic times with the occasional spurt of busyness here and there in between! You never know really.

This week I went to see Shelby Mahurin and it was yet another awesome signing! I had forgotten about the series Shelby was writing before this vampire duology, she briefly mentioned it that evening and while it's not necessarily dead, it just may not be entirely what we originally thought it would be AND she had another new project that I think is taking priority right now. This week, I'll be seeing Margaret Owen! I'll still have family in town, but everyone knows how much I love my books and author events and I don't think I'll be missing out on anything as I will spend the daytime hours with them, so it's all good! This will be the first time I get to meet Margaret so it should be fun!

Onto this week's haul! Here's what I got this week:

The Shadow Bride by Shelby Mahurin--B&N edition SIGNED!
The Shadow Bride by Shelby Mahurin--standard edition SIGNED!

Once the Skies Fade by Vanessa Rasanen--
with SIGNED bookplate and character cards! I still need to read the first book but I couldn't resist getting a copy with the clear signed bookplate sticker and character art!

Slaying the Vampire Conqueror by Carissa Broadbent--
B&N edition!
The Deathly Grimm by Kathryn Purdie

Then I also got my Fairy Loot edition of the third Emily Wilde book...another series I still need to start!

Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales by Heather Fawcett--Fairy Loot edition!

Just sharing the cover and sprayed edges! Will leave the hidden cover and endpages as a surprise in case others are still waiting for their copy! These special editions have been a lot of fun so I couldn't resist getting the third one too! Lol.

Then for review from the publisher I received:

The Devouring Light by Kat Ellis (ARC)

THANK YOU HarperCollins!

I LOOOOVED Kat's previous books and short stories so I am super excited for this one! I mean LOOK at the cover!!

Then I had ordered one of the many dolls that Pages of the Night had for half off a week or so ago! I decided to get a NON-Caraval character this time, so that's a HUGE deal for me! Lol.

I got Rose from Vampire Academy! This book/series was the one that brought me back to YA however many years ago that was! Right when the YA genre was getting their Paranormal boom! I think Twilight might have been a year or two away or maybe it was out. I really don't remember, lol.

Then LitJoy Crate was having a big sale and I saw a fun bookish coin in the mix so I decided to buy that as I long ago mentioned a weird joy for non-monetary coins! I just always thought they were cool! This was a Divination coin so basically if I need help making a decision with a yes/no answer...

And that was it for me this week! What all did you get?

Book Blogger Hop #351

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: Do you judge an author's works based on their political stances? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

MY ANSWER: Honestly, I try not to. I try not to dig into author's social media to find their political views. I honestly feel like they maybe should sometimes keep those separate from their career? I don't know. It's tricky. They tell you never discuss politics at the family dinner table and I almost feel like that should extend to authors and their readers. I guess it just depends. I don't feel like they need to keep quiet about them either. I guess what I mean is they shouldn't use their careers as a soapbox to discuss their political views. We are all entitled to have them, that's fine and dandy. I don't even like discussing what I believe in when it comes to politics in public settings online.

So I guess in a sense I don't??? But again, I don't go digging into their profiles to see what their views are to begin with. I know other people glom onto these things, but I don't want that to detract from my enjoyment of their works.

This topic is actually making my head hurt and spin as I don't want it to come off like I support authors who want to support hateful things. For the most part, the authors I follow do tend to follow the humane beliefs and that is good enough for me.

Let's Discuss: Bookish Would You Rather...

This idea came to me randomly over the weekend and I thought, why not make a discussion of it! I've seen a lot of This or That kind of memes on Instagram that I partake in if I like the offerings and this could have been one of the choices at one point...but I can't remember when it was if so!

Would You Rather...

Get an ARC of your most anticipated read for the year early--like the moment the ARCs are printed OR get to meet the author on tour for that book in your city (to minimize travel plans) and get it signed in person?

This is ultimately challenging because if I was offered an ARC of ANY of Stephanie Garber's books I would be over the moon to get it early to read but I think I would rather meet the author on tour for the book and get it signed versus getting the ARC early!

Yes, yes, ARCs are fun and all, but I feel like I would rather have a hand-signed edition of the finished copy and get to meet the author in person than receive an ARC. ARCs are still fun and I would never deliberately say no to one I realllly wanted to read of course, but for the sake of this game of would you rather have this or that, I'm choosing THAT! Lol.

How about you? What would you rather have in this sense?

Books from the Backlog #128

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread.  If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. This is a fun meme hosted by Carole @ Carole's Random Life in Books.

A sharp and funny urban fantasy for “new adults” about a secret society of bartenders who fight monsters with alcohol fueled magic.

College grad Bailey Chen has a few demons: no job, no parental support, and a rocky relationship with Zane, the only friend who’s around when she moves back home. But when Zane introduces Bailey to his cadre of monster-fighting bartenders, her demons get a lot more literal. Like, soul-sucking hell-beast literal. Soon, it’s up to Bailey and the ragtag band of magical mixologists to take on whatever—or whoever—is behind the mysterious rash of gruesome deaths in Chicago, and complete the lost recipes of an ancient tome of cocktail lore.

I picked up Paul Krueger's Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge at the one and only BEA I ever got to attend in May of 2016! I thought it sounded intriguing! A bar that supernaturals and demons attend? It had a nice edge to it and I decided to give it a try! It was one I bought, so I've held onto it but somehow have not read yet.

Let's Discuss: Vampires & Werewolves

I'm back with another topic! Lol. I've always been a paranormal reader. Once I read that first vampire book, I was a goner for contemporary reads. I mean, back in that day, I still read them, but it was more because there wasn't any other paranormal book to read. But anyways, I wanted to talk about my conflicting love between vampires and werewolves.

Vampires & Werewolves

Vampires were my first love. It just so happened that I picked up a vampire novel first. I'm not sure what my first werewolf read might have been. Maybe Blood & Chocolate by Annette Curtis-Klause which really had me loving the werewolves because holy smokes that was awesome! And this is the book, not the movie. We don't talk about the movie version. Lol.

There was always a mix of vampire and werewolf reads going on with my reading pile. Then when I picked up "adult" books I opened the door to a whole slew of other paranormal characters. But of course, I always tended to favor the vamps and the weres--which soon opened the door to other were-animals, like werecats! And we're talking BIG cats, the mountain lion, panther, cheetah-rip-your-face-off kind of cats! Lol.

I honestly could never really pick a favorite to be my number 1 fave. I know sometimes as paranormal readers we ought to have a favorite creature feature...but alas, I just can't seem to do that. I love my vampires, but then when I think about werewolves, I'm all atwitter for them! There have been sooo many good books with each "creature" so it's really, really hard to pick just one!

And this year, I am seeing the return of these beloved character types and I am all for it! I'm wrapping up (or possibly just wrapped up) Shelby Mahurin's vampire books and where I am not as I write this, they are AMAZING! I am also eagerly awaiting debut Jordan Stephanie Gray's Bitten! Which is about werewolves! Yes, Bitten can be hard to figure out which creature feature is involved, but I've been following Jordan for awhile now, so it's clear it's werewolves and if you had any doubts just check out the amazing cover!

So yes, I basically can't decide which creature I like best! They are both just so awesome to me and I get giddy either way when I pick up a book where they are the star!

Any paranormal readers out there? Do you have a favorite creature feature in books? Or do you favor vampires over werewolves or vice versa?

Can't Wait Wednesday #189

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

She was commanded to kill him with a single strike to the heart. She didn’t expect her own to betray her.

Sylina has sacrificed everything for her goddess–her soul, her freedom, her eyes. Life in service to the Arachessen, a cult of the Goddess of Fate, has turned Sylina from orphaned street-rat to disciplined killer, determined to overthrow Glaea’s tyrannical king. But when a brutal vampire conqueror arrives on their shores, Sylina faces an even deadlier adversary. She’s tasked with a crucial mission: infiltrate his army, earn his trust… and kill him.

Atrius is a terrifying warrior carving an unstoppable path through Glaea. Yet when Sylina becomes his seer, she glimpses a dark and shocking past–and a side of him that reminds her far too much of parts of herself she’d rather forget. Sylina’s orders are clear. The conqueror cannot live. But as the blood spilled by Glaea’s tyrant king runs thicker, her connection with Atrius only grows stronger. A connection forbidden by her vows. A connection that could cost her everything.

I'm late to the Broadbent game but it was at a signing another reader was telling me about her books, specifically THIS one that made me NEED IT! Sadly I could no longer find the OG copy, but I preordered this puppy during the B&N sale last month, so now I am just waiting for it to arrive at my door! I realize that this released yesterday, but I kept finding different dates for it and only just now realized I had this schedule for AFTER release day! But since it has not arrived at my door yet, I am STILL WAITING for it! Lol.

ARC Review--The Shadow Bride by Shelby Mahurin

In the thrilling conclusion of the duology set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Serpent & Dove series by Shelby Mahurin, a vampire and the woman who tried to kill him prove that true love can conquer anything, even Death. Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Mass.

Célie’s life is over. She took her final breath trying to save the people she loves—including the powerful and enigmatic vampire king, Michal, who refused to let her go. When Célie wakes, she cannot walk in the sun; she can hear her friends’ heartbeats and she craves their blood. Michal has cursed her to the eternal existence of a vampire.

But Célie isn’t the only dead roaming the earth. Her sister, Filippa, has returned as a shadow of her former self, and other revenants are rising from their graves intent on revenge. The fragile balance between life and death has broken, awakening an even darker force—and he is coming for Célie, ready to claim her as his Bride. With the fate of their world at stake, Célie and Michal must set aside their searing attraction to mend the veil and right the balance, once and for all.

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.

Shelby Mahurin brings a thrilling conclusion to The Scarlet Veil duology with The Shadow Bride and it is the very definition of epic conclusion! This read was so intense, so captivating that it was simply unputdownable!

Celie's life has changed forever. She died and was brought back as a vampire by the one vampire she thought she could trust, Michal. Being a vampire is hard, Celie struggles to control the cravings for blood and everything is just new to her. It's like she has to learn to "live" all over again, except now she's not really living anymore. Lou, Reid, Coco, and Beau are trying to help her through this new transition, as is Odessa.

It's not long before strange things start happening, stranger than usual. The dead are rising, and it's not vampires this time. It's revenants and they are coming for Celie and her friends by default. The why behind it all becomes clear much sooner than I anticipated, but with yet another 600+ page book, I figured there would be lots of surprising discoveries along the way and Shelby holds nothing back with this one.

Death has come calling for Celie, and this is Death personified. He has marked Celie as one of his Shadow Brides and he needs her for some nefarious purpose. Adding to her struggles with vamprism, Celie has no choice but to return to Requiem with Michal.

This book was sooo deliciously good! It was intense, it was mysterious, it was dark and beautiful! It was everything, just like its predecessor! I've been waiting for another YA vampire book series to take my breath away and Mahurin has done just that with this duology! It was everything one could hope for in a vampire read and that it took place in the Serpent & Dove world was the icing on the cake!

I positively loved how the romance continued to develop between Celie and Michal. Obviously, this was bound to happen with them despite everything they went through in the first book. And it was spicy! Mind you, this is still considered a YA book even with Celie being 19 years old, so don't expect the level of spice you'd get from an adult romance! Things are still relatively tame in this one all things considered, but I'd still call it spicy for its target age level.

This book was heavy with secrets and it was mind-blowing! I swear my heart had to have skipped a beat at least twice because of the turmoil Mahurin put her characters through and in turn me, by proxy! Lol. This book will leave you utterly breathless with all its twists and turns. The end results were even more startling!

I positively loved the epilogue to this one! Just when I thought things were wrapping up too quickly, we get this nice slow down for yet another goodbye! I can always hope it's not a forever goodbye, as we thought that once too when Gods & Monsters ended. Nothing is ever written in stone as I feel like there's still a good amount of characters we can follow around for a time or two...or three! Who knows at this point!

The ending to this one was absolutely perfect! I'll admit parts of it felt a little too clean, and maybe a little too perfect, but it's a minimal feeling at that. I'm always a little hard-pressed to believe the kind of situation that we had take place in this one. So that's more of a me thing, there's really no way I can encounter this situation and not have these feelings regardless of the author writing it. But as I said, it's a minimal issue to have with a book!

All in all, The Shadow Bride was a mesmerizing and spectacular conclusion to the duology! It was pretty much everything I was hoping for, albeit with the little annoyance, but it can be forgiven after everything else being so wonderful! This was by far one of the best reads of my year so far!

Let's Discuss: Fairy Tales & Retellings

Another idea popped into my head the other day and it was about fairy tale retellings! I had been scrolling on Instagram when one caught my eye and then a whole rambling discussion started going in my head and I decided to use it as a post! Lol.

Fairy Tales & Retellings

I love fairy tales! Some of my "origin" reads were fairy tales themselves! I loved Disney as a kid, but I also loved the OG fairy tales too! Retellings of fairy tales usually catch my eye, and I am likely to always pick up the book to see what it's all about when I know it's a retelling of Peter Pan, The Beauty and The Beast, and The Little Mermaid! While their Disney versions are vastly different from the original tales, I can't help but intrigued by their retellings or books that were inspired by these tales.

Especially when we want to turn Captain Hook into an anti-hero or at least sympathize for him! Honestly, ever since the show Once Upon a Time with Colin O'Donoghue as Captain Hook, I was totally for this idea of Hook not being the villain we always thought him to be! I loooove these kinds of stories the most! Lol.

With the others, the standard retellings are fun, modernized versions or what have you. I know I've read an origin story, so to speak, about the sea witch in The Little Mermaid. Other times of course we get the retellings straight from Disney themselves, which are still a lot of fun!

I do think among my collection of books I probably read/have the most of Peter Pan retellings or versions where Hook is our storyteller!

How about you? Do you enjoy fairy tale retellings? Do you have a favorite fairy tale where you're likely always to pick up its retelling in whatever form? And by "pick up" I mean at least read what it's about, not necessarily "read" read.
