The New York Times bestselling author of Dark and Shallow Lies
delivers another chilling supernatural thriller filled with murder,
romance, and a decades long mystery that haunts a small Florida town.
The perfect blend of Natasha Preston, Krystal Sutherland, and Delia Owens, with a paranormal twist.
Mount
Orange, Florida, is famous for two things: Cerulean freshwater springs,
ideal for free divers who aren't afraid of lurking gators. And the
gruesome cold case murder of best friends, Bailey and Celeste, twenty
years ago.
Bailey and Celeste's murders cast a permanent darkness
over sunny Mount Orange. Tru has always lived in that shadow. Now she's
supposed to head to FSU in the fall with her boyfriend, but those
unsolved murders -- and the death of her own sister -- invade her every
thought. It’s only in the shadowy deep of Hidden Glen Springs that she
can breathe.
When a strange girl named Rio rolls into town,
hell-bent on figuring out who killed Bailey and Celeste, Tru can't
resist entangling herself in the thrill of solving the decades old
mystery any more than she can resist her familiar, aching attraction to
Rio.
As the summer heat ignites, so does the spark between Tru
and Rio...along with their other-worldy connection to Bailey and
Celeste. But when someone begins stalking them, the girls become
convinced the killer is back in town. And if they keep digging into the
past, Tru and Rio know this time, it could be their blood that makes the
springs run red.
I picked up Ginny Myers Sain's One Last Breath ready for yet another chilling supernatural thriller, and sadly, this time around I was deeply disappointed. There's still very much thrilling vibes going on, but the supernatural aspect is very vague and barely noticeable. Plus the story involved an aspect I cannot stand to read about and the plot revolved around it for over half the story, so you can imagine my gripe with the book. It just made it very hard to get into and enjoy because, sadly, this scenario that I cannot stand ended up being a very focal part of the story.
Let's get to the good stuff first. Tru lives in a small Florida town where tragedy struck twenty years ago. Two teenage girls, best friends, Bailey and Celeste, were brutally murdered by a serial killer known as the Glades Reaper. He was never caught, but his victims were always killed in pairs, sometimes left in gruesome manners. Tru has always been a little bit obsessed with the case in some sense. It was THE most unsolvable mystery to hit her town and it happened before she was even born.
Then a new girl comes to town, Rio, and for some reason, Tru is just drawn to this girl. She can't figure out why. Rio is wild and enigmatic and Tru can't stop thinking about her. And oddly enough, Rio is also deeply intrigued by the murder mystery of Bailey and Celeste, but that's not a big surprise as every podcaster and murder mystery buff is drawn to the case and come visit the town where it happened. But the fact that Rio is also drawn to it like Tru is, just makes her all the more interesting.
The kicker to all this? Tru has a boyfriend, one she's been with for years and loves. Even though lately, she can't help but feel like she was meant for something more. In fact, she's been keeping secrets from East, ones about their future. Basically, we get all these hints about how Tru wants something else and how she feels like she was just expected to date and marry East, so you feel ready for when she starts looking at Rio.
But I have issues with this. While nothing overtly sexual happens between her and Rio, there's still all these looks, all these touches and glances, and yes, Tru is crushing on Rio and maybe unintentionally makes it known that she likes Rio and Rio very much likes Tru. But all the while I keep shouting at Tru that she has a boyfriend. She needs to break up with the boy now so she can pursue this thing with Rio. Honestly, if she did this right away I would have had little issue with her wanting to be with Rio. That Rio starts off their "meeting" with lies upon lies, and continues with the lying was another thing I didn't like but I understood her reasoning for some of the lies. The rest just had me suspicious, because this is a murder mystery! Lol.
But yes, because Tru is somewhat emotionally unfaithful to her boyfriend, who was also her childhood best friend, all her lying to him and deception...I just did not like it whatsoever. And this went on and on and ON! For over half the book! I cannot get behind a romance that for one, starts off with lie after lie, and one that resulted from what was basically cheating. I cannot stand to read about characters cheating on their romantic partner and it was just hard to want to root for Tru at times, you know?
The mystery aspect, when it circled back around to trying to solve this twenty year old mystery, was pretty good though. To be honest, I started out with one entirely different theory involving Rio, I so thought it would pan out because early on, it was making sense. I figured more clues would come along to provide further evidence, but then yeah, that did not pan whatsoever! Lol.
The real clues were all there once the big reveal came and thinking back, I am like how did I not see this right away? To be fair it was happening during my this is who Rio really is theory so I may have missed those other hints!
Sadly, the supernatural aspect was just so vague. It was interesting, I did read a book many moons ago with a similar theme. It was eons before the blog began so you won't find a review for it! Lol. I think that book has long since been donated too during one of the rare purges I did. But I feel like it within itself was not supernatural enough for me. I think that's what led me to donate that other book too, it was interesting, but not weird enough, you know?
The pacing wasn't its best either. I mean, I kept going at it because I wanted to see the mystery solved. That was really the driving force of this book for me. I wanted to know whodunit! I wanted to see if any of my theories had panned out, which most did not! Lol. If it wasn't for that mystery draw, I would've DNF'd this one. It was not the thriller I was hoping for that's for sure.
All in all, not my favorite of Ginny's books and sadly it was all chalked up to the way the romance was handled. Honestly, if Tru had just dumped her boyfriend earlier on to explore things with Rio, I probably would've been more of a fan, but she led him on for too long. I get they were friends first, but East deserved better than to be led on like that when Tru was having feelings for someone else. It wasn't fair to East and in some ways it wasn't fair to Rio either. It honestly really impacted the way I enjoyed the bulk of the novel because for the bulk of the novel Tru was going back and forth between these two and the mystery elements happened in between.
I left things sort of vague when it came to the supernatural element, mainly because I don't want to spoil it for anyone. It's not mentioned in the synopsis so I didn't want to mention it.
So basically, if you don't mind a story revolving around infidelity while a twenty year old murder mystery slowly gets solved with just a slight supernatural twist, then you might find yourself enjoying this one more than I did. Still a decent read if the infidelity thing doesn't bother you as much as it bothers me, because truly, that is what kept me from enjoying this one completely.
