Her relationship with sexy mage Adam Lazarus is strong and all her friends are around her. Even her magic training is progressing further than she ever expected. The only two dark spots in her otherwise settled life are her guilt over her sister Maisie's fragile mental state and Sabina's own sinking sense that she's got unfinished business with Cain, the mysterious cult leader she let get away months earlier.

When a string of murders rock the New York dark races community and threatens to stall the peace negotiations, Sabina finds herself helping to find the killer. Her investigation leads her down troubling paths that have her questioning everything - and everyone - she knows. And the closer she gets to the murderer, the more Sabina realises this is one foe she may not able to kill.

Unfortunately this doesn't release til January 2012, and I can't wait to read it!!

Review--Dark Descendant by Jenna Black

From the acclaimed author of the Morgan Kingsley, Exorcist books comes the gripping first novel in a new series about a private eye who discovers, to her surprise, that she’s an immortal huntress.

Nikki Glass can track down any man. But when her latest client turns out to be a true descendant of Hades, Nikki now discovers she can’t die. . . . Crazy as it sounds, Nikki’s manhunting skills are literally god-given. She’s a living, breathing descendant of Artemis who has stepped right into a trap set by the children of the gods. Nikki’s new “friends” include a descendant of Eros, who uses sex as a weapon; a descendant of Loki, whose tricks are no laughing matter; and a half-mad descendant of Kali who thinks she’s a spy. But most powerful of all are the Olympians, a rival clan of immortals seeking to destroy all Descendants who refuse to bow down to them. In the eternal battle of good god/bad god, Nikki would make a divine weapon. But if they think she’ll surrender without a fight, the gods must be crazy. . .

Jenna Black's newest series kicks off with Dark Descendant and OMG I LOVED it!! Once again we have a book that's taking Greek mythology with a kick into the storyline! Although this time it's a bit different and not really of the norm, but it was still fabulous!

Nikki is a P.I. and when a case she was working on turns into a complete disaster she finds not only herself in jeopardy but the people she cares for as well. Mostly her sister. Nikki is suddenly thrust into a group of people who claim to be descendants of the Gods, mostly the Greek ones. But what gets complicated is that there are 2 groups and one really thinks they are holier-than-thou while the other isn't. So naturally the two are at war and they both want Nikki for she is the descendant of Artemis, the Huntress--and she was my fave Greek goddess too!

Things get incredibly intense for Nikki when the bad group wants her to join their team, the good group wants her on their team, but don't trust her. They think she might be working for the other side. In order to prove herself, Nikki must use her good P.I. skills to find the leader's missing wife. The bad group had kidnapped her and held her hostage for 10 years. And they are immortal beings, but not totally invincible. Only one of their own can truly kill another of their kind that will leave them dead.

There's not too much romance this time around. No hot and heavy sex scenes like we saw in the Morgan Kingsley series. There's definitely some slight romantic tension going on, but nothing definite. We can only make guesses.

The pacing was definitely good. Nikki had to constantly try to prove herself to the good guys that she wasn't a traitor or spy and keep herself from getting killed by one of them as well. There was action as well, with a handful of fight scenes that were close calls for Nikki.

Needless to say that I am definitely adding this series to my fave list! And I sooo cannot wait for the next installment!

Interview with A.P. Fuchs

Hi all! As you know I recently read and reviewed A.P. Fuchs Blood of my World novellas, which were just awesome! They're nice quick reads but still very compelling. And A.P. was kind enough to answer some questions I had. So here they are:

JESSICA: How hard is it to write a novella versus a novel? Did you struggle with trying to write a shorter story?

A.P.: Not really, no. Going in to write the Blood of my World series, I knew each installment would be novella length, some 20-25,000 words or so. I suppose my subconscious took care of the rest and, as I wrote, released the details to me in a way that would accommodate the novella size.

JESSICA: Where did you get the idea for the Blood of my World series?

A.P.: When I decided I wanted to do a vampire story with a strong love theme throughout it, I basically just decided on a) what kind of vampires I would be writing about, and in the case of the series, they’re the not-nice, ugly, blood-sucking kind yet with residual human attributes from their previous life. B) In terms of the love part of the story, since it’s about two sixteen-year-olds, I knew right away this wasn’t going to be a steamy romance, so instead I decided to draw inspiration from past relationships, both the joy from them and the brutal heartache.

To be honest, I don’t write romances, but instead write love stories (usually under my pen name Peter Fox, whose titles include April and My Angel and Me). There’s a difference between the two and, to me, a love story is much more poignant and a much stronger way to tell a story than a romance fantasy of some sort.

The rest just came as I wrote as I’m one of those fly-by-the-seat-your-pants writers and rarely plan a story.

JESSICA: Will there be more novellas in the series? (Please say yes!)

I plan on it. I’m not sure if I’ll write another three and release them all at once like Discovery of Death, Memories of Death, and Life of Death, or if I’ll just put them out one at a time. I do like having a story arc running through a few books so most likely any future story will be a three-parter again.

A.P.: When not writing, what else do you like to do in your spare time?

Spare time? Please define. Kidding. I really don’t have any. I’m fortunate that my career is writing and publishing so a lot of time is spent doing that, both creating my own stuff and running my company, Coscom Entertainment along with its Christian imprint, Torn Veil Books. It’s something I love to do and, actually, I get bored if I’m not doing it. I have a hard time with “regular” everyday life stuff.

The rest of the time is spent with my two young sons, my wife and cooking.

I try and take Sundays off, so that usually means I do church in the morning then get together with my folks later on in the day.

That’s pretty much it.

JESSICA: In 5 words how would describe the Blood of my World series?

A.P.: Intense, teen vampire love story.

JESSICA: What book are you currently reading or read last?

A.P.: I just finished 24x7, a graphic novel by Alec Longstreth, which contains seven of his 24-hour comics. The guy’s such a terrific storyteller.

JESSICA: Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions! I look forward to reading more in this series!

A.P.: Thanks for having me!

Waiting on Wednesday

                                  I hate waiting...
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog post by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights releases we're eagerly awaiting.

My choice this week is:

The New York Times bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely series delivers her first novel for adults, a story about the living, the dead, and a curse that binds them.

Rebekkah Barrow never forgot the tender attention her grandmother, Maylene, bestowed upon the dead of Claysville, the town where Bek spent her adolescence. There wasn't a funeral that Maylene didn't attend, and at each Rebekkah watched as Maylene performed the same unusual ritual: three sips from a small silver flask followed by the words "Sleep well, and stay where I put you."

Now Maylene is dead and Bek must go back to the place--and the man--she left a decade ago. But what she soon discovers is that Maylene was murdered and that there was good reason for her odd traditions. It turns out that in placid Claysville, the worlds of the living and the dead are dangerously connected. Beneath the town lies a shadowy, lawless land ruled by the enigmatic Charles, aka Mr. D--a place from which the dead will return if their graves are not properly minded. Only the Graveminder, a Barrow woman, and the current Undertaker, Byron, can set things to right once the dead begin to walk.

Review--Spirit Storm by E.J. Stevens +CONTEST

Spirits of the Dead are coming...

Yuki is about to face an army of lost souls on Samhain, the night of Halloween, when the spirits of the dead roam free. Yuki will need all the help she can get from her friends, but will Calvin be there for her when she needs him the most?

I received this e-book from the author for review

E.J. Stevens' Spirit Storm was a good followup to She Smells the Dead. Samhain is drawing closer and Yuki is getting a little nervous, Samhain is when the dead walk the earth meaning more spirits will be visiting her. She wants to find a way to protect herself from the onslaught of spirits, but that's going to involve research.

That's not all though! There's also a werewolf killer on the loose and Yuki is worried for Cal since he is a werewolf, and a little worried for Simon as well.

Quite a bit goes on despite the book being pretty short. The ghost of one of the dead werewolves haunts Yuki, with his smell--burnt brownies this time. And she wants to help him move on. But things go terribly wrong during the investigation. Which is all I will say for spoiler purposes.

Basically Yuki has a lot on her plate this time around and she has her friends at her side still to help out. What I liked most was Emma and Simon's bickering! I'm kinda seeing something brewing between those two. There's an age difference, but I can't recall if it was ever mentioned in exact years. But I like how they are always fighting! It's pretty comical.

The pacing was pretty decent again, rather fast paced as things moved along. One problem after another until the ending comes. It has a somewhat resolved ending, but there's definitely room for more!

Overall rating 4/5 stars

E.J. Stevens has been kind enough to offer up some swag packs for US readers only. They will include bookmarks, postcards, and romance trading cards!

Review--She Smells the Dead by E.J. Stevens

It's the beginning of senior year and Yuki's psychic awareness of ghostly spirits is threatening to ruin her life. Her ability to sense spirits of the dead isn't glamorous like on TV.

SHE SMELLS THE DEAD.

Yuki is being visited in her dreams and suspects that her friend Calvin is involved in something strange. Will Yuki be able to save the spirits and herself?

I received this e-book from the author for review
E.J. Stevens' She Smells the Dead was quite interesting. First the title alone had my eyebrows raising in curiosity and the cover is beautiful and eerie at the same time, so I had to give this one a shot! And it was pretty interesting overall!

Yuki--it's really just a nickname, but it's how she goes by throughout the book, can smell the dead. There isn't much backstory behind this, only that it's her secret power. Only her friends, Emma and Calvin know about it. Not even her parents know. Which her parents were pretty absent in this book, like most YA novels tend to be for some reason!

Yuki is suddenly haunted by the smell of vinegar and knowing that it is a spirit she decides to try to help him somehow so he can move on. Her friends decide to help in any way they can as well. In the meantime while she's trying to work up the courage to ask her crush to the Homecoming Dance, she doesn't see what's right in front of her already. Cal.

It soon becomes obvious that Yuki and Cal are going to be more than just friends, and their relationship starts out kind of platonic, in a friendly way before they both realize that their feelings for each other are more than just friendly.

The pacing was decent. Yuki alternates between her friends in doing research and recon on trying to figure out what the ghost wants. It seems like a mystery developing, but the story doesn't focus too much on it. The story is about Yuki getting into her powers.

Her dreams she's been having are starting to freak her out as well. Strange things are happening in them that she can't explain and they seem to be pointing her back to Cal. Her dreams led me to the conclusion rather easily, but that's neither here nor there really.

Overall it was a decent story. A little on the short side but that's no big. I would've liked there to be a little more focus on the mystery behind the spirit haunting Yuki, but there wasn't much depth to that matter. It focused more on Yuki, like I mentioned.

Overall rating 3.5/5 stars

Review--Life of Death by A. P. Fuchs

Now disconnected from their families, Zach and Rose try and make it on their own away from the war between vampire and slayer. But word has been spread to the undead that Zach needs to return to his family otherwise his mother will only make matters worse for him.

Trying to survive together isn’t all it is hoped to be and Zach and Rose must decide if a vampire and human truly can remain together, or if it’s a lost cause and they should accept their fate.

Is love enough?

Before the two can find out, the vampire’s family comes for Zach and Rose, and the two are swept into a nightmare where there will be only one survivor.

I received this e-novella from the author for review

A.P. Fuchs' Life of Death is the third book in the Blood of my World series and it was very interesting indeed!

It was another well paced read where things seem to fly by, but it is not meant to sound negative! Rose and Zach are on the run from their families, for Zach's vampire family wants something from Rose and will do anything to get to it.

There was quite a shocking revelation announced right away and it was mind-blowing to say the least! The tension is just thick in this novella for Zach and Rose are literally on the run and hiding out when they can.

Life of Death is also a bit more bloodthirsty than the last two. Zach is really getting into the swing of things of being a vampire and that includes bloodlust. Although the term isn't used. It just seems that way from my perspective as I read. We see a lot more of him feeding.

Hand in hand with that, we also see a bit more romantic bonding between Zach and Rose that it still gives the novella some heart. It's not all bloodthirsty. Zach and Rose have a real loving relationship growing between them that stems from their relationship they had when Zach was human.

The ending was quite shocking and equally fast paced. I was eager to finish it all since I had already devoured the first 2 novellas. And what an ending it was! I'm still baffled!

Overall rating 5/5 stars!

Review--Memories of Death by A. P. Fuchs

Now submerged in the world of vampire slaying, Rose must come to terms with what that means for her relationship with Zach and if it’s even possible for the two of them to be together.

Meanwhile, every moment spent with Rose helps bridge the gaps in Zach’s memory, reminding him how much they meant to each other in their former life.

Rose’s father, Marcus, is now even more dedicated to purging the Earth of the undead, so much so he’s willing to kill the only boy Rose had ever loved to help make the world a safer place for her.

Likewise, a plot is in play to infiltrate the Slayer Order, even at the expense of a loved one.

The countdown begins and Zach and Rose must come to a decision as to where their loyalties lie, or if they’re going to put each other above all else and face the consequences together.

I received this e-novella from the author for review
A.P. Fuchs' Memories of Death pretty much picks up where we left off in Discovery of Death with just a few weeks having gone by for Rose and Zach. Rose is getting used to the vampire slayer life, but still yearns for her life as a regular teen. Plus she hasn't seen Zach since that day at the cemetery and she longs to see him again.

Zach is getting used to being a vampire and once he sees Rose, he begins to remember his life as a human. Memories of the two of them come forth and he is filled with a sudden longing for her. He remembers his feelings for Rose and the love he once held for her springs back to life.

This novella focuses more on Rose and Zach being together now that the intro stuff has come to pass. But Rose's father already hates vampires and would never allow for Rose to be with Zach if he knew about it. So their relationship is kept secret, from Zach's vampire family as well being that Rose is the daughter of a hunter.

With more fast paced plotting this novella soon comes to an end with shocking results. Looking forward to reading the next one in the series as well!

With the multiple third person p.o.v. we get to learn a lot about the characters' inner feelings. Especially Zach and Rose. I like this because we get to see how far one would go for the other. Learning the true depths of their hearts. Very compelling in some ways.

Overall rating 4.5/5 stars

Review--Discovery of Death by A. P. Fuchs

Zach and Rose had fallen in love during their sophomore year, their worlds completely changed and utterly belonging to each other’s. It was the first time either had fallen in love, deeply, purely. Aiming for a future together, plans were interrupted when Zach went missing for three long months, leaving Rose distraught, heartbroken and depressed.

Zach awakens in the dark of a coffin, his memory erased, his life and feelings for Rose forgotten. A strange group of people who identify themselves as his family reveal he has become a vampire, one of the undead, and is now a being with incredible power and a thirst for blood.

However, during Zach’s absence, Rose learns of her own secret heritage: she comes from a long line of vampire slayers, hellbent on eradicating the unholy threat of the undead from the face of the Earth. Now, not only does she need to try and get over the young man she loves, she must also come to terms with her new life and what that means for her future.

It is only when her path accidentally crosses with Zach’s does lost love begin to surface again.

I received this e-novella for review from the author, A.P. Fuchs

Last week I got an email from A.P. Fuchs asking if I wanted to review a set of e-novellas called Blood of My World and since they sounded rather interesting I accepted! They are rather quick being novellas and all. Already finished the first and halfway through the second!

The first one, Discovery of Death shows Rose and Zach were once a couple falling in love. They were 16, so it can be considered YA if you want, but like most YA books, it is really only the characters' ages that make it seem so. Zach is a vampire. Right away, chapter 1 and we do learn somewhat how he came to be in this way. While Rose is mourning his loss. She only knows that he is missing and has been for months.

Her parents are vampire hunters, so she will be one someday, yet she doesn't know this yet. So in a way it's like a Romeo and Juliet thing--or more accurately Buffy and Angel. Vampire and vampire slayer.

It was a rather fast paced read and I liked it that way. There were a few times I would've liked more development or descriptions here and there, but overall the pacing was great! It never dragged or anything. There are some surprises along the way as well that we shocking and helped move the story forward as well.

It's told in multiple third person p.o.v.'s so we get to see and learn a lot from the characters including Zach and Rose, plus Rose's dad and another of the vampires you soon meet.

A.P. Fuchs did an amazing job writing this novella. Such a short read, yet it was filled with great characters and you see a plot thickening within the series. Secrets are still being kept by some characters and we have yet to learn about them. Cannot wait for more!

Overall this was a quick paced and fun read and I am already enjoying the next one! Rating 4.5/5 stars--I would've really liked to have a bit more in some descriptions but as a novella this was amazing and fit its criteria!

Cover Art--Becca Fitzpatrick

You've probably seen this by now but had to share it as well! Here's the cover art for Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick. The last book in the trilogy if I do believe. Can't wait to get it. Might be doing this one on my Kindle since my shelves are overflowing with books. Waiting for a particular case to go on sale at Target since I have no IKEAs by me.

But I just have to say that this is my fave cover out of all them! Silence will release on October 4, 2011.

The noise between Patch and Nora is gone. They've overcome the secrets riddled in Patch's dark past...bridged two irreconcilable worlds...faced heart-wrenching tests of betrayal, loyalty and trust...and all for a love that will transcend the boundary between heaven and earth. Armed with nothing but their absolute faith in one another, Patch and Nora enter a desperate fight to stop a villain who holds the power to shatter everything they've worked for—and their love—forever.

Review--E-ARC Shift by Jeri Smith-Ready

Aura’s life is anything but easy. Her boyfriend, Logan, died, and his slides between ghost and shade have left her reeling. Aura knows he needs her now more than ever. She loves Logan, but she can’t deny her connection with the totally supportive, totally gorgeous Zachary. And she’s not sure that she wants to.
Logan and Zachary will fight to be the one by her side, but Aura needs them both to uncover the mystery of her past—the mystery of the Shift.

As Aura’s search uncovers new truths, she must decide whom to trust with her secrets…and her heart.

I received this e-ARC from Simon & Schuster for review

When I saw this e-ARC up for grabs I decided to give it a go, since I only somewhat liked Shade, Jeri Smith-Ready's Shift kind of goes into that same category. It wasn't a horrible read, but I did find myself not thoroughly loving it at times.

First off, it's been months since I read Shade, so my memory is really fuzzy and took longer for me to get caught up then it usually does. And a lot of interesting things happen in Shift that make it worth reading, it just takes awhile for some of those things to happen. A good portion of the middle kind of drags into nothingness, where this isn't a whole lot of action, just nothing really.

I was kind of angry at Aura in the beginning, when she and Zach were trying to make a relationship work. She was still hung up on Logan in some ways and it just nagged at me that she wouldn't let go of him, I understand it to be hard to let go of someone you love, but the way Aura handled it just nagged at me. I wanted her to commit to Zach.

Then comes the slow moving stuff where not too much supernatural or ghostly things happen. But things really do get interesting a little past the halfway point. We learn a whole lot of the secrets that have been floating around Aura. Stuff about her mom, her unknown father...

All very interesting and which made the book still a worthy read if not a super great one. The ending is sort of cliffhanger-ish, but not incredibly horrid that will make the wait agonizing. There are a few loose-ends that leave me wanting to know more so I might have to look into book 3 when it releases next.

Overall rating is then 3/5 stars, so it can go either way, feels really middle ground to me. Am really curious to see where more of the mystery of Aura's parents lead of course and the whole Shift situation!

I already read this as an e-ARC but I had to have my own copy to cherish forever since it was so amazing!

Dark Descendant by Jenna Black

Then I also got some stuff that I bought from Kim Harrison's shop Vampiric Charms just before it closed:

I got a Pizza Piscary's T-shirt and 2 new charms to add to my bracelet that I bought when it first came out. My new charms are the Tomato--the second charm from the left and the blue Butterfly--second charm from the right! Love them! Now I have more on my bracelet for next time I see Kim! She's probably one of the very few authors that I buy the most stuff from when she has it!!

I also bought some other book related goodies, but since they're a gift for one of my friends, and I'm not sure if she checks my blog out or not, I can't say what they are since I want them to be a surprise for her graduation gift! But they're book related! Was so glad they finally came, because for awhile it seemed like they were lost in the mail! I was totally freaking out! ;)

And that's what I got this week in my mailbox! What did you get?
