This week's question is: What is the longest book you’ve read? What are your favorite 600+ page reads?

MY ANSWER: The longest book I've ever read was the full version of The Count of Monte Cristo!! That one's over 1000 pages! Haven't read it in years, but I did enjoy it a lot! The next is probably Harry Potter! I think it's the 5th book that was the longest out of the 7! And there are probably a few of the others that are over 600 pages! Those are my fave I guess, TCMC and Harry Potter! Also the Historian was another read I remember that was pretty long. It got lengthy at some points but was still really good! It was over 700 pages!

TGIF is a weekly feature created and hosted by GReads! that re-caps the week’s posts and has different question each week.

This week's question is: Bookish Trends: What are some bookish trends you are noticing in the literature world today? Is there a particular trend you'd like to see more of?

MY ANSWER: Hmm, for awhile paranormal reads were the ever popular thing! Vampires are still pretty hot right now. But in regards to YA books, I see dystopian books on the rise! I've read a few that have paranormal elements and I really like them! Really, I think it still all boils down to preference. I like paranormal reads, so I see a lot of paranormal reads out there. Dystopian isn't far behind though. Like with The Hunger Games coming out today.
But there isn't really a trend that I need to see more of. As long as there are nicely written and engaging paranormal reads, I'm a happy camper! Still working on my own paranormal reads, so if they fall from the shelves maybe mine can replace them someday! Wishful thinking!

Mini Review--For I Have Sinned by Darynda Jones

Darynda Jones revisits the sexy, suspenseful world of supernatural shenanigans she created in her Grave series with For I Have Sinned.  In this Charley Davidson story, Charley helps a woman find out how she died and gives her the closure she needs to pass through to the other side.

So I decided to read Darynda Jones' For I Have Sinned real quick, and it was a pretty quick read, but still enjoyable!

This is story 1.5 so I thought it would be good to read it before reading the next book, which I hope to get to very soon!

Anyway, it was a surprising read for it's not told from Charley's p.o.v. It took me a few lines to figure that out, cause I was expecting it to be Charley's story! In fact, it's told from the ghost that she's going to help!

It was interesting too, because we got to see how a ghost, or just someone else sees Charley and it was nice! The ghost saw Charley was someone who could help her. And she saw a lot of other strange things too, like Mr. Wong! And we got to see Reyes as well!!

Overall it was a quick little read, the ghost can't remember how she died or when. And she wants to know the hows and all that. So Charley decides she is going to help her solve the mystery. Even though the ghost doesn't even know her own name!

It was nicely paced, maybe a little quick for a novella, but novellas are short! Wouldn't have minded more! Oh well, this was a wonderful addition to the Charley Davidson series, now I just have to read the rest!

Overall rating 4/5 stars

Review--Vampire's Kiss by Veronica Wolff

IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE PARTNERED WITH A VAMPIRE, YOU HAVE TO WORK THE NIGHT SHIFT.

By her wits, blood, and sacrifice, so far Drew has survived the intense training on the Isle of Night. She's a second-year Acari, and her ultimate goal is to become a Watcher. Now she has a shot at her first mission...except nothing is as it seems. The vampire Alcantara is as sinister as he is sexy, Drew's mentor Ronan, is more distant that ever, and it turns out that there are other vampires out there. Bad ones.

Ancient, bloodthirsty, and powerful, these undead are really old-school. They've captured one of the Watcher vamps and are torturing him for information. The only chance to save him is to infiltrate a major summit the baddies are holding on their own island. There will be mortals serving as butlers, maids, and various hired help. Drew had better brush up on her skills as a serving girl, because she's about to go undercover.

When the vampire's prisoner turns out to be a gorgeous bad boy, Drew's first mission quickly turns into more than she bargained for...

Wow! Veronica Wolff's Vampire's Kiss was just as awesome as the first book! I honestly cannot decide which is better of the two! They are both so wonderfully written it is hard to choose just one, as you may know I can rarely ever choose just 1 fave book!

It's summer time, really this takes place before Annelise starts her second year there, but this is going to be one helluva summer! She passed the final test not that long ago, Lilac is gone. So all should be well. There's just the other girls there now, and her friend Emma. But Annelise has a new set of enemies now. And it's the upper class. Lilac was bad enough on her own, but when all the older girls, like Masha.

But angry girls is only one of Annelise's problems. She seems to have a lot on her mind as she gears up for the mission Alcantara keeps mentioning to her. In fact the first 3/4 of the book is Annelise preparing and dealing with her student body enemies. I was wondering when, if ever, she would go on this mission. For she planned to make her grand escape during this trip as well. Which I found odd. She is enjoying excelling at this school, yet she still yearns to escape. And maybe join the CIA or some other such company and use her super cool skills. It was just a little odd since she does seem to enjoy her time at the school despite the bullies.

And then there are the boys! Yes, she still secretly pines for Ronan, maybe not "pine", but the crush is still there.Yet Ronan isn't as much. He's distant, and her Proctor Amanda seems to be as well. She can't help but notice the looks the two share when they think no one is looking.

Another interest is actually the vampire Alcantara, which I can't figure out. It might just be the whole vampires are sexy thing, but I can't get a bead on it. He is a teacher, but there only seems to be tension brewing and there may be an ulterior motive that we aren't aware of yet.

Then there's Josh! I like Josh! He's an Aussie and I love his accent! He's flirty and fun! And he proves himself to be a great friend in this book. I can't tell yet if he's a contender for Annelise's heart yet. So there's quite the shape of love going on here! There's no telling which direction Annelise might go in!

When Annelise finally does go on her mission things end up going haywire! The end results are shocking and a bit frightening. We're left with more puzzles and questions than answers. Like who exactly this mysterious prisoner that Annelise helped escape is. And why Alcantara wasn't exactly pleased with the results of said rescue mission.

The ending was surprising as well. I mean total shocker! And I sooooo cannot wait to see where the next book takes us! What I really enjoy about this series is the characters! Annelise is still one of my most fave YA heroines! I feel a connection to her, maybe because we're both short--although she's still an inch taller than me!--and have that kind of outcast thing from high school as I wasn't really in any kind of crowd back then! But I find her refreshing, yet sometimes she is a bit naive with certain things, but that makes her more real. I wouldn't want to have a main character who was without flaws!

There are still a few unresolved mysteries left in this one. One's a spoiler, so I won't go there, another is about the island itself. Annelise makes a kind of discovery but before we can dwell too much into it, she goes on her mission. These few cliffhangers aren't too dreadful, they just make you yearn to know more, but it doesn't make the wait all that killer like with other cliffhangers that shall not be named!

Vampire's Kiss was pure awesomeness! Filled with moments both terrifying and endearing, this series is a roller coaster of a ride and once again I highly recommend reading it!

Overall rating 5/5 stars

Hungry Hungry Games!

So I've subscribed to Woot Daily Digest! Everyday they show me the featured shirt, I've bought 2 so far, waiting for the second one to come in the mail still. But this was today's shirt!

I haven't read the Hunger Games so I won't be seeing the movie. The book just didn't catch my interest, but I saw this shirt and got a chuckle out of it! I hope those who are fans won't take it too personally or anything, I just thought it was funny! Even if I had read the books, I would probably buy this shirt! It's just cute and funny!

So if you are a fan and are interested in getting the shirt, or just want the shirt regardless, it's at Shirt.Woot!

The shirts are pretty nice! Basic quality, for the most part they're just $12 and free shipping in the US, $5 for international orders!

Random Thursday

Today I 'm making it an Author Spotlight! I had one author I was going to talk about, but that ended up being last Friday's Hop topic! So I quickly changed it! Easy peasy!

Anyway, today I want to mention how awesome Jeannie Holmes' books are! She's written 2 books in what is known as the Alexandra Sabian series! Set in our world, that is in the know of vamps, Alex is a FBPI, she enforces the vamp population of Jackson, Mississippi.

The books are really good! Read them when they released these past 2 years, so my memory is fuzzy at the moment! I only remember that the mystery elements were fab! The characters awesome! It was just an incredible and fun series!

I recently found out that the publisher hasn't bought a third book from Jeannie! Horror of horrors! But Jeannie is still writing it, so who knows, maybe someday it will be out in the world for us to read! In the meantime I want to recommend that you all read these books! Buy them! They are awesome reads!

When I reviewed the first book, Blood Law, I wasn't in the rhythm of blogging, so I didn't have a rating. But I would still give it 5/5! There's action, lost love reuniting! Secrets, murder! All so many interesting bits to read!

This is definitely a must read for all paranormal fans! If you love the edgy UF books, these will so fit the bill! I think I must say that Blood Secrets was my fave! It went more into Alex's past and brought up some pretty serious stuff and memories!

I sooo hope that there's hope for this series. So again, I urge you to buy these books! Already planning on getting these for my friend come Xmas!

For my reviews of Blood Law and Blood Secrets, just click the titles in this sentence!

Waiting on Wednesday

I hate waiting...
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog post by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights releases we're eagerly awaiting.

Druid Atticus O’Sullivan hasn’t stayed alive for more than two millennia without a fair bit of Celtic cunning. So when vengeful thunder gods come Norse by Southwest looking for payback, Atticus, with a little help from the Navajo trickster god Coyote, lets them think that they’ve chopped up his body in the Arizona desert.

But the mischievous Coyote is not above a little sleight of paw, and Atticus soon finds that he’s been duped into battling bloodthirsty desert shapeshifters called skinwalkers. Just when the Druid thinks he’s got a handle on all the duplicity, betrayal comes from an unlikely source. If Atticus survives this time, he vows he won’t be fooled again. Famous last words.

I still have to read books 2 & 3, but if they are as awesome as the first book, then I am sure to be loving this one as well! Based on reviews I read, I already know I'll love it!

In Fever Moon, we meet the most ancient and deadly Unseelie ever created, the Fear Dorcha. For eons, he’s traveled worlds with the Unseelie king, leaving behind him a path of mutilation and destruction. Now he’s hunting Dublin, and no one Mac loves is safe.

Dublin is a war zone. The walls between humans and Fae are down. A third of the world’s population is dead and chaos reigns. Imprisoned over half a million years ago, the Unseelie are free and each one Mac meets is worse than the last. Human weapons don’t stand a chance against them.

With a blood moon hanging low over the city, something dark and sinister begins to hunt the streets of Temple Bar, choosing its victims by targeting those closest to Mac. Armed only with the Spear of Destiny and Jericho Barrons, she must face her most terrifying enemy yet.

I like so many others, fell in LOVE with this series and Barron! And Mac--she's wicked cool! Soooo can't wait to see the duo in graphic novel format! Plus it appears that this is like it's continuing the story from where we left off! New adventures with old fave characters! I am soooo in!

Review--Isle of Night by Veronica Wolff

IS LIFE OFFERING FEWER AND FEWER OPTIONS? THEN JOIN THE DEAD.

When Annelise goes off to college, it means good riddance to her abusive father and stepmother, but a bureaucratic screwup leaves her without a high school diploma, flat broker, and facing a future that seems more elusive than ever. Then she meets Ronan--tall, dark, and way too seductive for her own good. He promises Annelise a new life...if she has the courage to chance the unknown. One look at him, and she certainly has the desire. He offers her a lift, and, sure enough, accepting rides from strangers does yield surprises.

Whisked away to a mysterious island in the North Sea, Annelise is pitted against other female recruits in tests of skill, smarts, and strength. To win is to become a member of the Watchers, a unique elite partnership with vampires that dispatches its teams on the most dangerous missions imaginable. It's not exactly what Annelise had in mind for a new beginning, but it's livelier than the alternative. Because on the Isle of Night, to lose a challenge doesn't mean just dishonor. It means death.

Let the games begin.

Whoa! Veronica Wolff has seriously created a deeply dark and scary world here. Isle of Night is nothing like Hogwarts or even St. Vladimir's Academy--although they are all schools, the other two have nothing on this place! If you fail, you die.

Annelise was looking forward to college, she's a brain at seventeen and was ecstatic to leave behind everything in Christmas, Florida. But then she's bombarded right at the start, there was a mishap in the computer system and she apparently didn't graduate high school. Stuck with nowhere to go, no working car, no money, she accepts the ride from the friendly Ronan. Even though she senses that there is something totally different about this guy, she decides to trust him.

He quickly reveals what he has in mind for her, and I love that Annelise actually stops and thinks about it. She sees the absurdity, that maybe Ronan is a whack job ready to kill her or he's just crazy. She weighs the cons and pros before deciding to join him, thinking that maybe this place will be her escape, her college that she will likely never have, but she's oh-so wrong! Not only are there vampires there, there are also viscous, manipulative, conniving teenage girls as well and they are the real enemy. It's high school all over again.

Annelise was a rejuvenating character, she's got brains, not so much brawn, but she learns as quickly as she can. She becomes a more relatable character in my eye.  I could see myself befriending her, although I am nowhere near as intelligent as she! But Annelise has a strength I admired. She has managed to surpass the abuse inflicted on her nearly all her life and is now tackling an even greater task. Her battle to win the title of being a Watcher will give her freedom off the island. All she has to do is win a series of battles.

The other characters were awesome as well! Lilac is without a doubt one of the b*tchest girls to ever cross the pages of books I've read! She is one evil twit! She is against Annelise and is out to make her life miserable. Every time she crossed the page, I had anger boiling inside of me! That takes great writing! Incredible talent and Ms. Wolff has it!

Ronan was a breath of fresh air! He's mysterious and kind. He sees a strength in Annelise that no one else does. It's the reason he chose her, or it may be... Yes I am being vague deliberately! Vampires play a huge role in this book as well. And one of them has his eyes on Annelise.

The story was well paced. It basically focused on Annelise at this school and trying to survive, which is harder than it sounds. There's danger at every turn. And one wrong move could leave Annelise a goner.

Isle of Night is a deeply intriguing read, filled with fresh characters! It's definitely a page-turner and I highly recommend it! Off to start the second one now!

Cover Copy Reveal--Sin's Dark Caress

Hey all! Tracey commented on my post the other day when I was showing off her very fine cover! She even gave me the back of the book description, so have at it!

An ancient darkness has risen from the ashes…and terror has been loosed upon an unsuspecting world.

Forensic witch Bianca Sin has never seen anything like it: homeless teenage girls torn to pieces by dark magic in the cold shadows of the city. More terrifying still is the symbol written in blood on an alley wall—the unmistakable seal of the Dark Brethren.

Teaming up with NYPD homicide detective Lancelot McManus and an elite task force headed by the shapeshifter Oberon DuPrie, Bianca knows her worse fears have finally come to pass. A new war of annihilation is looming that will plunge the worlds of vampire, shapeshifter, and human into chaos—and two adversarial tribes locked in uneasy truce will need to take up arms together to save the children. Trust will be essential for Sin and McManus, as the hunt forces them to confront their deepest terrors.

For the ultimate evil is no longer approaching.

It’s here.

ARC Review--Sacrificial Magic by Stacia Kane

When Chess Putnam is ordered by an infamous crime boss—who also happens to be her drug dealer—to use her powers as a witch to solve a grisly murder involving dark magic, she knows she must rise to the challenge. Adding to the intensity: Chess’s boyfriend, Terrible, doesn’t trust her, and Lex, the son of a rival crime lord, is trying to reignite the sparks between him and Chess.

Plus there’s the little matter of Chess’s real job as a ghost hunter for the Church of Real Truth, investigating reports of a haunting at a school in the heart of Downside. Someone seems to be taking a crash course in summoning the dead—and if Chess doesn’t watch her back, she may soon be joining their ranks.

As Chess is drawn into a shadowy world of twisted secrets and dark violence, it soon becomes clear that she’s not going to emerge from its depths without making the ultimate sacrifice.

I received this e-ARC from the publisher for review via Netgalley

Satcia Kane's Sacrificial Magic was quite the read. This series is a challenging one for me. I loved Stacia's previous series, the Megan Chase series, this one is totally different. It's one where I can't quite decide if I really like the narrator.

True Chess is probably one of the more flawed narrators, being a drug addict. She has an insanely troubling and disturbing past. Yet, she's still interesting at times. Although, the drug addiction part is still hard to get over for me. And it even becomes more of a problem for Chess in this book, but I can't ever really see her giving up the addiction.

Yet, she still manages to kick some ghost butt! Ghosts are nasty things in this series. They are likely to kill you 99.9% of the time. This time Chess goes back to school--high school--to find the ghost of a young girl who committed suicide years ago, but the mystery behind it all is wayyy deeper than Chess thought.

But that's not her only problem, there's murders going about from the drug war. Once again Chess is weighed with too many responsibilities. Yet she's a tough cookie, she'll be able to manage...somehow!

Like I said, Chess's drug addiction becomes an issue in this book more than ever. It gets between her and Terrible, just as their relationship was starting to take off. Their relationship isn't the truly lovey-dovey kind, yet you can really see the love there between them.

Stacia really creates a colorful world in this dystopian setting. You can really feel the grit of society through her words. And the people with their language are also very vivid. I sometimes struggle with their voices because it's so rich--with slang--yet still I can practically hear the twang.

As I said, I struggle with this series, but I like the author's work. So I keep going at it. One book at a time. The pacing is pretty decent, there are a few slow moments, but they build up to greater ones.

Overall rating 3.5/5 stars

ARC Review--Pure by Jennifer Armentrout

There is need. And then there is Fate...

Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.

When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon... and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude... or killing her.

When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

I received this ARC from the publisher for review
Jennifer Armentrout's followup, Pure was an extraordinary read! I wasn't sure how the book would go when Half-Blood was just awesome, but it lives up to its predecessor!

Alex has a lot on her plate. She's in love with a pure--the total forbidden love--and yet she's bound to another, Seth. Life just couldn't get any worse. Yet it does. There are more demon attacks occurring and lives are in danger. And more importantly Alex is due to be questioned in front of the Council soon and the results will be life changing.

There's definitely a lot of romantic tension going on in this book! We have Alex trying to move past her feelings for Adrian, yet that is easier said than done. Especially since he treats her so kindly and is just the prefect boyfriend material. Then there's Seth. I didn't think I would like him so much since he wasn't my fave last time around, but we get to see a whole other side to him this time around. We see a lot of him actually. Since Alex is going to be the second Apollyon, she and Seth have a special connection, one Alex tries to ignore, yet when she is forced to work alongside Seth in her training she sees this other side to him.

The action was rather well paced! When there wasn't direly exciting moments, the emotions were running high and things were tense! Things were well balanced! And there are definitely some secrets that get dropped. I have a few theories developing but will have to wait til the next installment. And there are some ultimately earth-shattering surprises that happen!
It was just a totally exciting and engaging read! I so can't wait for Deity!

Overall rating 4.5/5 stars
