In My Mailbox

In My Mailbox is a weekly blog post hosted by Kirsti over at The Story Siren and inspired by Alea at Pop Culture Junkie.

It was a pretty slow week, which is totally fine with me! Less to add to the TBR pile! In fact the two books that I did buy, I've already read!

First I had to get my keeper copy of this one since I read it on Netgalley months ago:

 Goddess Interrupted by Aimee Carter

Then I just HAD to buy this compilation, I already own the books separately, but Maria is a fave author of mine and I loooooved this as the UK cover for Inside out, so seeing it as the cover for the compilation made it an easy decision to buy!

Inside by Maria V. Snyder (contains both Inside Out and Outside In!!)

I HIGHLY recommend this series!! It's one of the only series I read that doesn't involve something paranormal or magical! It's dystopian and really good! There's still air of mystery that has yet to be answered about the when and wheres! And everything else is just good too!! Read it, buy it, get it!!! :D

This week's topic is: Books You Are Most Excited About to Come Out in 2012! {from April on}

*in no particular order

**Click image to be taken to Goodreads descriptions!

ENCHANTED
by Alethea Kontis

This one really excites me!! I am really digging the fairy tale books that have been popping up! This one definitely fits the bill in that area!

THIRTEEN
by Kelley Armstrong

As sad as I am to see the series ending, I really cannot wait to see how Kelley ends it! What makes it better is I remember hearing Kelley say there will be no ARCs for this, so I won't be in total envy when someone else gets it first! Yay for that!

ICED
by Karen Marie Moning

Who isn't excited for the Fever series spinoff? Dani was definitely an enjoyable character and I cannot wait to see what mischief this girl gets herself into next!

THE GOLDEN LILY
by Richelle Mead

With the way the last one ended I am totally dying to read this one!! I cannot wait to read more of what Sydney does and just being back in the VA world! And especially since of my all time fave character showed up at the end of the last one! ;)

THE HIDDEN
by Marianne Curley

Really really really cannot wait to read this one either!! Was super excited to see that Marianne was finally having a new release!

OTHER CANNOT WAIT MENTIONS

Had to stop myself from going overboard! This post almost became Top 10 Sundays!! Had to renarrow it down some!! Need to do this post again as a part 2!! :D

ARC Review--Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross

Mirabelle's past is shrouded in secrecy, from her parents' tragic deaths to her guardians' half-truths about why she can't return to her birthplace, Beau Rivage. Desperate to see the town, Mira runs away a week before her sixteenth birthday—and discovers a world she never could have imagined.

In Beau Rivage, nothing is what it seems—the strangely pale girl with a morbid interest in apples, the obnoxious playboy who's a beast to everyone he meets, and the chivalrous guy who has a thing for damsels in distress. Here, fairy tales come to life, curses are awakened, and ancient stories are played out again and again.

But fairy tales aren't pretty things, and they don't always end in happily ever after. Mira has a role to play, a fairy tale destiny to embrace or resist. As she struggles to take control of her fate, Mira is drawn into the lives of two brothers with fairy tale curses of their own . . . brothers who share a dark secret. And she'll find that love, just like fairy tales, can have sharp edges and hidden thorns.

I received this e-ARC from the publisher via Netgalley

Sara Cross's Kill Me Softly had real potential! The storyline was fantastic, engaging and intriguing! I loved the idea she had with the whole fairy tale concept in that people in Beau Rivage are all likely some form of a fairy tale person. There are Snow Whites running about, evil stepmothers here and there and some Cinderellas getting ready for whatever ball!

So there are a lot of fairy tales going on. It's a curse on them, either by a good fairy or bad and they are forced to live a life of their chosen fairy tale person. Mira doesn't know any of this at the beginning. In fact she comes to Beau Rivage days before her sixteenth birthday wanting to find her parents' graves for they died when she as young and her over protective godmothers never let her do anything, so she rebels, runs away and does the one thing they never wanted her to do.

Like I said, I really liked how Cross wove in the fairy tales in the book. All the characters had their own traits and you could pretty much tell who they were from what fairy tale. I knew almost all of them too! Loooooved seeing some of the lesser known classics. Although at times they seemed to be getting mixed up with Disney and their original tale, like Beauty aka Belle did live with her father and had an affinity for books which was Disney, but she knew that one day her father would steal a rose from "the Beast" and she would have to go live with the Beast, tame him into becoming a man again--which is a mesh of both fairy tale and Disney for in the fairy tale the father came upon the castle and took shelter there, which the Beast gave freely, but when the father stole a rose from the garden that's when the Beast went nuts!

Blue was definitely one of my fave characters! He was one I couldn't quite place right away since it had been years since I read my fairy tales but once his character was revealed, things got really interesting! He also has a twin brother, Felix, so yeah, love triangle ahoy! I really liked Blue better from the beginning. He was extreme but sincere.

Now onto what I didn't like about this read and that was Mira herself. I'm use to my heroines being strong or at least trying to be strong and not so naive. I felt that Mira was a bit naive and selfish. I mean she runs away in the middle of the night when she's 15! She's not 16 yet and here she's trying to be all mature and adult like, but her actions were just too childish for my liking. And then she insists that's she in love with Felix. That she knows him and blah blah blah--note she does just meet this guy early on in the book. So yeah, that's Disney right there, falling in love without really knowing someone!

But she's constantly told not to do this or that--which I admit would bug me too--yet she still does what she is not supposed to do. I don't know really. I just felt like Mira had no backbone. She did grow a little towards the end, but it was the very end. And I just didn't care for her actions. And naturally, like I said, there's a love triangle and while throughout the book she was feeling things for both guys, she leaned towards the other. Until one moment, then bam, she was all over the other guy and the "love" she felt for the first one is gone. It just nagged at me. I know love triangles work that way sometimes, but I just didn't like it.

So while the plot was really good and the pacing was good and the secondary characters were good, I just did not care for the main character/heroine. I felt like she was just too young and naive, easily manipulated. Which I suppose is fine in a way since she is only 15, but I just expected that the girl who's running away would have a little more backbone so she could survive. But everything else about the book was awesome! And I will say that it was only occasional moments that Mira bugged me, not all the time. Mostly just when she started going on her love for boy A or boy B!

And there were a few things left hanging towards the end, a few unresolved issues, so maybe the next book, if there is one, will be better! Would have no idea what kind of adventures Mira would have next though!

Overall rating 3.5/5 stars

Cover Copy Reveal--Alice in Zombieland!

She won't rest until she's sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would changed course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that's all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real.

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn't careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies.

This one sounds pretty cool and I look forward to reading it! Really like Gena's YA stuff!

This week's question is: Have you ever bought a book BECAUSE of a bad review?

MY ANSWER: Hmm...I do not think I have. Usually reviews inspire to want to buy a book or not to. The only times I might have were because I wanted to read the book anyway and then I happen to see a review, read it, and find that they say the book was bad. But I already had the book or plan on buying it because it sounded like something I wanted to read or was by an author I already liked.

So in a way I guess the short answer is no! :)

TGIF is a weekly feature created and hosted by GReads! that re-caps the week’s posts and has different question each week.

This week's question is: Book Series Finales: Which book, from any series has been your favorite ending? What about your least favorite ending?

MY ANSWER: OOh, this is a toughie! It's hard to choose, with most of the series I read that have ended I have liked all the endings pretty well. Not sure which my fave would be...ooooh I know one now! Oh and Harry Potter, as I am guessing that may or may not be a popular one, is a given for me! I really did like the ending and even thought the epilogue was nice even though I recall some people saying they could've gone without it.

This is still one of my fave trilogies! Fire Study brought us to the end of Yelena's journey, so the ending was really enjoyable! I thought it wrapped things up nicely. There wasn't anymore looseends, but we still get another trilogy out of Maria with a new main character, with the old ones still popping in for visits! But still, I really liked seeing Yelena's story progress through the trilogy! The ending was great and totally left me happy and satisfied!

As for which book I didn't totally love come the end of the series was Shadow Heir by Richelle Mead. Now I did really love this series and I really enjoyed the book, but like most people will say, it was those last few pages that totally threw me! I mean when a series ends, I like things to be all neatly wrapped up. Yeah, I feel like if I go into too much detail I might get towards spoiler territory, so I won't say anything more than I didn't care for the grand finale!

Random Thursday

It's almost Easter!! Today is actually Holy Thursday, the day before Good Friday. Sunday it's Easter!! Yay! Easter is a pretty nice little holiday! One of the things that's been tradition for my family for years is dying eggs. Although this year, the eggs are a little hard to peel, it might be because we brought a brand we don't normally use, because we were boiling them the "right way" according to some article or something we heard about.

Another thing I remember about Easter was the egg hunt the adults had for all us kids (cousins). It was fun. My grandparents put coins in them, so by the end every grandkid got like $2 or $3 in change! And I remember that one of my uncles always hid a few of them really really hard. His were always the last ones we were trying to find!!

Also as a kid, I remember the Easter Bunny would hide my basket, then on Easter morning my sister and I would search the house looking for our basket of goodies! Of course nowadays it's sitting on the table for us!

And I think this year will be the first year we have an egg hunt for my niece! She's three and a lot more active now than she was at previous Easters! Last year my cousin did do a small egg hunt for her with eggs hiding around her house, but this will be her first one outside! As long at there isn't any rain! Seems like it used to always rain on Easter! Go figure!

What about you! What are your Easter traditions, if you celebrate it?

Review--The Shadow Reader by Sandy Williams

Some humans can see the fae. McKenzie Lewis can track them, reading the shadows they leave behind. But some shadows lead to danger. Others lead to lies.

A Houston college student trying to finish her degree, McKenzie has been working for the fae king for years, tracking vicious rebels who would claim the Realm. Her job isn’t her only secret. For just as long, she’s been in love with Kyol, the king’s sword-master—and relationships between humans and fae are forbidden.

But any hope for a normal life is shattered when she’s captured by Aren, the fierce and uncompromising rebel leader. He teaches her the forbidden fae language and tells her dark truths about the Court, all to persuade her to turn against the king. Time is running out, and as the fight starts to claim human lives, McKenzie has no choice but to decide once and for all whom to trust and where she ultimately stands in the face of a cataclysmic civil war.

Sandy Williams wrote the most incredible book, The Shadow Reader!! I soooo loved McKenzie's character! She seemed very natural, very real! True, she has the ability to see the fae and read the shadows when they cross between worlds and is able to draw out the map to see where their "portal" leads to. It has made her a valuable asset to the king, Atroth.

What I loved most about McKenzie was that she was an English major! Go us! But she's also a very realistic human being. She wasn't our normal kick ass heroine, in fact she didn't have too many defensive skills or combat knowledge. She was always protected from those dangers by Kyol. But when she's kidnapped during a final exam, she's about to learn a whole lot more about the fae than she ever thought possible.

For years the rebels have been attacking Atroth and his people. Kyol, her crush, friend and protector for ten years is the swords master and works with the king in order to protect the people and McKenzie. But not even he could stop her from getting kidnapped by the enemy, Aren. But Aren is most definitely a different type of villain. In fact McKenzie starts to question who the villain really is with her time spent with Aren and his people. But she brushes it off at Stockholm syndrome! I love this girl!

McKenzie begins to question almost everything about her life the more time she spends with Aren and she doesn't know if she likes that or not. If she likes him, for you know Aren is very handsome!! I love him! I was totally team Aren in this one! And what's great about McKenzie, she hates that she thinks she might be in a love triangle, because love triangles are stupid, that is you can't decide which guy you love more, than you might not really care about either. But yet McKenzie finds herself in this very position as the book goes on!!

And there is still a war about! One that just gets worse and worse with more casualties. Soon McKenzie finds herself making a choice. A choice that will have serious repercussions if the other side ever finds out!

This was an incredibly well paced novel! Hardly ever a dull moment since McKenzie spends a lot of time trying to escape Aren, but then all that romantic tension starts to build up confusing her even more. There was a lot of romantic tension as well, never anything totally over the top either which I really enjoyed.

Overall this was just an awesome book! A totally different kind of take on the fae, yet they still have some of the same qualities we all know and love. Sandy just puts a little different spin to it all and the results are mindblowing! The Shadow Reader is definitely a must-read!

Overall rating 5/5 stars

Cover Art--Changeless Manga!

I really like this cover!! The blue is just so pretty! Funny since Changeless had Alexia in a blue dress as well! I still need to read the Soulless manga, but the cover art for this popped up and I had to share!

Plus Gail did say on her blog, that this one does detail the events of Changeless even though the title is still Soulless Vol 2!

Changeless releases November 27, 2012

Waiting on Wednesday

I hate waiting...
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog post by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights releases we're eagerly awaiting.

Waking up in a coffin hungry for blood is only the beginning for sixteen-year-old Ava Blue. When Chance Caldon, the hottie who dug her up, tells her that she’s half vampire, Ava’s world really turns upside down.

Half vamp? Ava can’t believe it...she doesn't even know what that means! Not until Aldric, a thousand-year-old vampire, shows up and tells her it’s true--and that he’s the one who turned her. Then Ava truly begins to believe what she is. Now, she has to deal with a sudden and powerful bloodlust, the desire to see Aldric dead, and her growing crush for Chance. Ava knows she's a monster now, she can feel it; and her life is over.

But redemption isn’t lost. Aldric is giving her a chance to regain her humanity. The price? Kill a hundred vampires, or remain a bloodsucker forever.

So Ava sets out to get her life back. But killing vampires begins a battle that could destroy everything she is working toward. In the end, Ava's decisions will forever change her life and the lives of those she loves.

ARC Review--The Calling by Kelley Armstrong

In The Calling, the sizzling second book in the Darkness Rising trilogy, #1 New York Times bestselling author, Kelley Armstrong, pumps up the romance, danger, and suspense that left readers of The Gathering clamoring for more.

Maya and her friends have been forced to flee from their homes during a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set. They they're kidnapped, and after a chilling helicopter crash, they find themselves lost in the Vancouver Island wilderness. But Maya has a secret. She can ran faster, climb higher, and see better than nearly anyone else. It's part of who she really it--and it has something to do with the mysterious paw-print birthmark on her hip. Yet as Maya and her friends face unforeseen dangers, it becomes clear that she's not the only one in their close-knit group with something to hide. If they're going to survive, they'll need all their extraordinary abilities to help them get back home.

I received this ARC for review on loan from Amber at Awesomesauce Books

OMG! When Amber at Awesomesauce Books said she would loan her ARC of Kelley Armstrong's The Calling out, I was super happy! It had been a long time since I read The Gathering, but knew I had to read The Calling asap because of the previous ending! Of course now I am eagerly awaiting the next book which isn't even scheduled for publication yet!

The Calling picks up immediately where we left off with Maya and her friends, in a helicopter escaping the fire that may not have been accidental. Yet they aren't out of danger yet, in face they're knee deep in it! After a harrowing escapade that leaves the teens stranded on an island, I was wondering if the book would play out like LOST, luckily it didn't. But the teens are still on an adventure with danger at every turn.

There are people after them, too many people and it's hard to keep track of who everyone is. They just know they can't trust anyone. We don't get to learn a lot about them or anything. We just get to make speculations along with Maya and her friends. But we do get to pick up tidbits here and there that make the story really interesting. Such as Project Genesis. Remember them? ;)

There wasn't a whole lot of romance in the book, like the cover description alludes to. There's definitely some tension building up and some startling revelations--one I kinda figured even! And the ending leaves you desperate for more! I know I'm looking forward to the next one!

This was definitely more exciting than The Gathering, which I felt was more of an intro kind of book. The Calling is where the action happens and lots of revelations are made--not just in the romance area either! Never fear though, there are still some unanswered questions lying about that I am sure Armstrong will pick up in the finale next year! Oh the irony--dying to read an ARC, only to have to wait even looooonger for the next book which doesn't release til next year!

Overall rating 5/5 stars

In My Mailbox

In My Mailbox is a weekly blog post hosted by Kirsti over at The Story Siren and inspired by Alea at Pop Culture Junkie.

Well my week would've gone a whole lot better if Barnes and Noble would've had the books I wanted. I had 4 releases this week that I was looking forward to and I only got 1 from B&N and another that I found at Walmart. But 1! The other two books I wanted they didn't have!! Made me soooo very upset and reminded me how much I missed Borders again!

But anyways this week I got:

Sacrificial Magic by Stacia Kane*

*Already read this one as an e-arc but I needed a keeper copy for myself!!

Forgiven by Jana Oliver

So what did you get this week?
