Have you ever noticed that in Pixar movies there's nods to past Pixar movies and even a hint as to the next one...or one after. Like we saw Boo hand Sulley a Nemo toy and Nemo was still another 2 years away from releasing!
But perhaps the most popular hidden Easter egg, is the combo A113!
It's in all the Pixar movies! Finding it is like finding an Easter egg! LOL! But did you ever know what its significance is?
Well, according to my Disney Desk Calendar, this is "a salute to the room number for a college animation class where many of the Pixar filmmakers met"! I don't think I knew that before reading it on my calendar some weeks ago! LOL!

ARC Review--Smoke and Mirrors by Jess Haines
A girl who uses her illusions to fool the world into thinking she's just like all the other magi.
A dragon who sees through her lies.
Together they just might survive a world that wants to control or destroy them both.
Kimberly may wield ultimate cosmic power, but even a mage has to pay the rent. No one will hire her for her magic talents until she's got the credentials, so she’s stuck in a crappy rent controlled apartment with her mother, yearning for treats she can't afford at her part time job in a cafĂ©, counting down the days until she graduates the secret Blackhollow Academy school for magi. Only then will she have the certificate she needs to land her dream job in a coven.
The problem? She needs a familiar to graduate.
As an illusionist, she doesn't have the ability to summon or create a familiar of her own. Her only option is to convince a supernatural creature to let her bind it instead. Since having a powerful Other at her beck and call would guarantee her a place in a coven after she graduates—and legendary treasure hoards are an added bonus—she thinks binding a dragon as her familiar will solve all her problems...
Because sometimes a girl needs a dragon, not a knight....
I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. I was in no way compensated for this review.
Jess Haines brings us a delightfully new series that rings of some familiarity of her previous one. In fact,
Smoke and Mirrors takes place in the same world, only we
get a new cast of characters. I think one familiar name was dropped, but
that was about it. Of course, I’ve read this one sporadically over the
course of a busy few days,
so my memory might be playing tricks on me!
Anyway,
here we have a young sorcerer Kimberly, who is just trying to get
herself through mage school and find a place for herself in the magic
community
that she and her mom won’t have to worry anymore. As it is, she and her
mom are always overworking themselves just to pay the rent. It really
hit me hard to see them struggle so much. I mean, these poor women are
so focused on trying to pay the rent that there’s
hardly ever any groceries for them to eat. So it’s Kimberly’s hope to
get into the right coven so she can find a good paying job and put an
end to all their struggles.
It’s
Kimberly’s professor who recommends that she find a powerful familiar,
such as a dragon, before graduation. That would be good for her in the
long run and she sends her to a man named Cormac Hunter who could be
the key to finding exactly what she needs. Only Cormac isn’t the most
personable of people. But he does take Kimberly under his wing and sort
of introduces her to the hidden magical world
that she didn’t realize was right before her (Granted, she is a
sorcerer so she’s not unfamiliar with magic, it’s only that the place he
takes her to is a secret of sorts and meeting other new paranormals was
an eye-opener for her in some ways).
Kimberly
is hard pressed to make it on her own. She’s a very strong-willed and
independent individual. I loved her moxie! She isn’t one to cave, not
even in face of Cormac, who again, as I said isn’t the friendliest of
types. He also harbors a dark secret and at times feels that Kimberly
may be more deceitful than anyone else. Since this is told in third
person, we kind of get both of their points of view
and we quickly learn that both of them are a little clueless as to who
the other one really is.
Sparks
explode and fly once things get rolling and secrets get revealed. Then
Kimberly is dealing with a sinister wyvern who has his own evil agenda
that involves Kimberly. She will have to use all of her talents to get
herself out of the danger she finds herself in.
Naturally,
we see a bit of chemistry between Kimberly and Cormac. I gotta say, I
loved it! I love seeing the strong willed type, like Kimberly stand
up to the stingy Alpha male types like Cormac. And then once the two
realize what they feel for the other, I get all those gushy feels for
them! Cormac being the Alpha male sort really crumbles once he falls for
Kimberly and for some reason this always makes
me smile! I loved it! And just because these two start falling for one
another already, don’t expect it to be all insta-love, because it’s not!
There’s some real struggles between them and they have issues to work
out between them.
I
also really liked how involved Kimberly’s mother was in her daughter’s
life. Yes, they live together and both struggle to make ends meet, but
still.
It’s rare to see the young 21 or so year old living with her mom. I
guess that rang home for me as well because I was always very close to
my own mother. And as you can see from my teaser earlier yesterday,
Kimberly’s mom is very protective of her daughter.
The
ending was pretty surprising and it leaves you with a nice feeling that
more should be on the way. As of this time, I have no clue if this was
a standalone or not. It feels like it could be series, but it’s too
soon to tell.
The
pacing to this one was pretty decent! Just the right kind of speed, not
fast, not slow, but just perfect! There was quite a lot of excitement
going
around, and since we got multiple points of view, you were really kept
on your toes!
If
you’re looking for a story filled with magic and other powerful
creatures and of course, a nice dose of romance, then this is the read
for you!

Waiting on Wednesday
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog post by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights releases we're eagerly awaiting.
I thought the first book was rather cute! The movie...the movie was cute, if a little hooky with all the singing. I get that it's Disney and especially Disney Channel movies are all about the signing! But I think this one will be fun to read! And I thought it was quite comical that Kristin Chenwoth sang a song called "Don't You Want to Be Evil?" because it totally reminded me of "Popular"!

AUTHOR: Melissa de la Cruz
PUBLISHER: Disney-Hyperion
GENRE: DISNEY! (yeah not sure what to call this? lol!)

I still need to start this series but what better way to do that then binge the trilogy once it's all out?! No waiting! YAY!
TITLE: Nil on Fire
AUTHOR: Lynn Matson
PUBLISHER: Henry Holt and Co.
GENRE: Action/Thriller-y YA--haven't read book 1 yet so I can't determine its genre...

There’s no place like home. Especially if home is the infamous Isle of the Lost. Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay haven’t exactly turned their villainous noses up at the comforts of Auradon after spending their childhoods banished on the Isle. After all, meeting princes and starring on the Tourney team aren’t nearly as terrible as Mal and her friends once thought they would be.
But when they receive a mysterious invitation to return to the Isle, Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay can’t help feeling comfortable in their old hood—and their old ways. Not everything is how they left it, though, and when they discover a dark mystery at the Ise’s core, they’ll have to combine all of their talents in order to save the kingdom.

Teaser & Top Ten Tuesdays
Teaser Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by MizB of Books and Beat.
Here are the rules:
1. Grab your current read
2. Open to a page
3. Pick out 2 lines that are SPOILER FREE
4. Name the title, author, etc.
Okay, time to be bad! I couldn't decide between two teasers, so naturally I am choosing both!! And also naturally, they are both over two lines! ;)
"'No one is going to see her naked but me.'
Kimberly huffed, her cheeks flaming with embarrassment. 'Oh my God, no one is going to see me naked! I can shower myself!'
Cormac frowned, peering down at her with a wistful expression. 'Are you sure? I certainly wouldn't mind.'" Kindle loc. 59%*
"Heather closed her eyes, gritting her teeth. 'I'm not even going to ask why you need a bodyguard. I'm not sure I want to know. But I do want you safe. Mr. Hunter--Cormac--dragon...person. I appreciate you offering to protect my daughter--but I want you to know that if you do a thing to hurt my little girl, I don't care what you are. I will hunt you down.'" Kindle loc. 83%*

This week's topic is: Ten Teen Years & Childhood Characters You'd Love To Revisit As Adults
*in no particular order
1. HARRY & CO.--no explanation necessary
2. JESSICA & AUBREY--my first vampire novel. The one that hooked me into paranormal reads and never wanting to read an ordinary setting book again!
3. KATE & JARROD--my first Aussie read and my first time-traveling one too! Oh how I ADORED these characters and the magic and the romance and the time traveling! It was all soooo MAGICAL! LOL!
4. SUZE & JESSE--how I would love to re-read this series including its most recent addition again!! It was such an incredible read and I adored every moment and book of it! And Discovering books 5, 6, and 7 were just oh so wonderful delights!! (Ignoring the fact that buying book 7 is what led to my cc problems, it's not the book's fault though!)
5. JESSICA & CO.--my MOST favorite fairy tale retelling from the Once Upon a Time series!! If you struggled with Liz Braswell's Disney retellings, I highly recommend this one despite all that! This one was AMAZING!!
6. THE RANDOM HOUSE BOOK OF FAIRY TALES--this was one I checked out endlessly from the library when I was in elementary school! I loved all the fairy tales in it! It was a wide collection of them! It was where I also got my first taste of Grimm fairy tales as Snow White was in it! That one wasn't as "grim" as say Cinderella, but I enjoyed reading this fuller version than what I knew from Disney!
7. DISNEY CLASSICS--okay not sure where to lump this one! But we had all these Disney books that might have been mail ordered subscription or grocery store buys...I can't remember! They were just always on the shelf at my grandparents house! Some were original Disney stories or some were the Disney movies told in storybook format and some were just stories told Disney style, because apparently The Princess Who Never Laughed was a storybook before this one! I just always remembered reading this one, because Goofy was hilarious when he wasn't even trying to be and yet that Princess never even smirked...at first! ;)
8. STREGA NONA--took me a loooong time to get this name right! Luckily I was close enough that Goodreads jumped in to the rescue! I remember being read this in elementary school as well! I thought it was pretty funny and how ol' Strega Nona showed Big Anthony how it was done!
9. THE RAINBOW FISH--another delightful tale from childhood! A good moral lesson in what it means to have friends and appearances and all that! Good emphasis on sharing too! Though...I don't think it necessary means to rip off your body parts and share with friends...but I guess it's different when you're a fish! LOL!
10. DEAR AMERICA DIARIES--I never read a lot of these, nowhere near even half since there were sooo many! But I found these to be quite enjoyable! Firstly, "Diary" books are always kind of fun in some sense! And then to have one with a girl on Titanic!! Yeah, this was one that stuck with me in some ways! Plus, you do get a bit of a history lesson. However small. And there was always a section of historical notes in back so you knew how realistic the diary was. And yeah...I think the author at the time knew it was probably a cash crop to write this one a year(ish) after the movie Titanic came out! I think we were all hoping to see Jack (Leo) walking around! LOL!

Last week got crazy busy for me halfway through and I wasn't even able to read 2 books. Which was pretty upsetting for me. LOL! Hopefully things won't be as hectic this week. Though I know a good chunk of today will be busy!

Stacking the Shelves
Stacking The Shelves is all about the
books we are adding to our shelves each week, sharing with you our
excitement for our newest titles and maybe have you discover a new book
in the process!
I had me a nicey-nice week! The work portion wasn't so nice, but the bookish portion was definitely more my style!!
Here's what I got from beautiful Tuesday:
Then I also received my OTSP Secret Sister gift for April in the mail this week!
And that was my freaking awesome week!! Definitely makes up for things being super crazy at work! What did you all get??
I had me a nicey-nice week! The work portion wasn't so nice, but the bookish portion was definitely more my style!!
Here's what I got from beautiful Tuesday:
The Rose and the Dagger by Renee Ahdieh
The Mirror and the Maze by Renee Ahdieh
Prodigy the Graphic Novel by Marie Lu, Ill. by Kaari, Adapted by Leigh Dragoon
It Takes One by Kate Kessler
Bright Blaze of Magic by Jennifer Estep
Soldier by Julie Kagawa
Then on Saturday to celebrate Independent Bookstore day, I went to a local bookstore and found me a bargain! Plus since my mom was with me and also bought a book, we both got to get an ARC! So naturally, she let me choose for her! Here's what I got from that:
Shadows by Paula Weston--this was on my wishlist for awhile now and wouldn't you know it I found the first book in the series in the bargain shelf! It was half off!!
The Flame Never Dies by Rachel Vincent (ARC)--SO cannot wait to read this one because it's Rachel Vincent!!
Heir to the Sky by Amanda Sun (ARC)--I had heard mixed things about this one. At first I was curious and then I got nervous, but when I saw this among the choices, I thought why not?!
THANK YOU Main Street Books!!
It also happened to be the Greater St. Louis Area Book Fair this weekend! So I stopped by there after work on Friday! There were a TON of books, but sadly, as I realized last year, very little organization. I mean it is organized by genres, but you'll find YA books in the adult Sci-Fi/Fantasy and adult Urban Fantasies in the YA section, YA books in the children's section...it's just utter chaos! I basically go to see if I can find books for my collections and if I can happen to find a random title that's on my back burner. I did find three lovelies and it only cost $9 for them all!
The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey--heard good things about this creepy psychological thriller! I'm pretty sure I bought it on my kindle as a kindle deal some time ago, but how can I say no to a $5 paperback?
Enclave by Ann Aguirre--I initially had this one some years ago and then just donated it. But I decided I wanted to give it a go again at some point! And at $3 for a hardcover, into my hands it went!
Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause--I read this one years ago in middle school, we won't mention what year it was, but it was definitely some time AFTER it was first published! LOL! I have this original cover art (I assume it's original) in paperback, but when I saw it in hardcover for $1, I decided it was meant to be!
Then I also received my OTSP Secret Sister gift for April in the mail this week!
After the Woods by Kim Savage
Dumbledore Funko Pop
Coloring book
Coloring bookmarks!
THANK YOU SIS!
Then for review from the authors themselves I received:
Smoke and Mirrors by Jess Haines (ARC)
Hunt by Alyssa Rose Ivy (ARC)
Struck by Amanda Carlson (ARC)
THANK YOU Jess, Alyssa, and Amanda!!!
More fun bookish stuff I bought this week:
a funny bookmark
a sign to go on my bookshelf
Then I got my preorder gifts for ordering The Crown's Game!
Bookmark
Trading Cards
a Sticker!!
THANK YOU Tsar! ;)
