ARC Review--The Goddess Legacy by Aimee Carter

The Goddess Legacy is an incredible "side story" that Aimee Carter wrote in which we get to see what some of the gods and goddesses were like before Kate came along! A prequel of sorts for many of the people involved!

It was really good too! I love how Aimee weaves the gods and goddesses personalities into "modern-ness" so well! I mean Ava/Aphrodite can be sweet in one moment and then selfish in another! Her need for love in different forms is not one of her better qualities, yet she is the goddess of love!

Hera's story was first, in which Zeus attempts to woe her because he loves her and wants to marry her. Hera tries to resist at first, knowing Zeus will never treat her as his equal, but she succumbs to his whims. Yet her life is not the happily ever after she was expecting. Zeus as we all know has a problem with being monogamous.

Aphrodite's story was with her not wanting Zeus or "daddy" to dictate her life and tell her who to marry. She loves Ares, god of war. They have a passionate love and a very physical one too. Yet Zeus says she is to marry Ares' brother Hephaestus. So Aphrodite and Ares run away together, yet while things start out wonderfully, they do not remain so. 

I really don't like Aphrodite in this one. Her need for all kinds of love leads her to be unfaithful. She chooses one of the brothers to marry, but sees the other one constantly! But this is Aphrodite and she is known to have many lovers.

Persephone's story stemmed from her not wanting to marry Hades. She was betrothed since she was young and come 16 she was to marry him. Yet it's not the life she wants. She doesn't love Hades, though he loves her.

Persephone is allowed to spend half the year wherever she chooses, and thus begins Persephone's life of deception and selfishness. 

I do feel for the girl. She didn't want to be forced to marry someone and I get that, but the way she treated Hades seemed harsh. She betrays him in the worst way possible, yet still comes to him when she needs something.

This seems to be a pattern with the gods and goddesses; falling in love soooo many times. I find it annoying. Although, I do realize that is how the myths go in mythology as well.

Hermes's story was far more interesting. He was trying to find a pair of deities who went missing. He searches for others as well. Then he goes to Earth in disguise where he meets Tuck and her band of thieves. He learns that humans don't know about him and the other gods of Olympus. They have become nothing more than memories long forgotten. 

Hermes learns a few things about humans and humanity while he's there too. It was a tragic little story. But the outcome brought Hermes into the good graces of his family. This is when the gods and goddesses choose new identities and names for themselves. So that was an interesting little story to read about!

The final story is about Hades, who claims a new identity for himself as Henry. Although it was suggested by Calliope or Hera, as Henry was one of her favorite kings. Which if it's the Henry we all know, I find odd. Hera being the goddess of marriage and with what Henry did to his wives. Although, maybe it was another Henry, history was never my best subject!

Henry, after turning down Calliope's offer of companionship and more, is ready to fade. The loneliness is killing him. But his family isn't ready to give up, so the the test to find the next goddess begins. And so do their deaths. Henry is grief stricken at each of their deaths and is ready to end it all. 

But Diana isn't ready to let him, so she says she will have a daughter and she can be his wife, if she chooses. Henry even has an encounter with Kate when she is but a child. The ending is nice as well, for Henry makes some revelations and does a very kind thing for James.

These stories are best read in order, they have a nice little timeline and it's easier to follow if they are read this way. I love being back in this world and learning more about the gods and goddesses Kate interacts with. Seeing their origins, so to speak, really gives new insight to how we see them now!

So when we said "house" this was the first house that came to mind! Would sooooo love to be in Ethan's house! Plus it just seems like a fun place to be!

Do I really need a reason to wanna live here? School or no school really! I wanna be a witch!

Why would I want to live in Susannah's house? Because there's a hot cowboy ghost haunting her bedroom of course! (EEP! So happy, I found a nice big picture this time! This is Meg Cabot's Mediator series, but in the beginning she wrote them under the name Jenny Carroll, and these are the covers I have for books 1-4!)

So it is fictional, yet not necessarily fictional in the sense that it came from a book--well this particular castle, since Beauty and the Beast was a fairy tale in a book. And the reason why I would LOOOOVE to live in this castle...

OMG! Talk about Weird!

Okay, so I'm watching TV, just veging out, taking a break from everything and I see this commercial for Chuck E. Cheese. I didn't really know what it was til near the end of the commercial because the mouse I saw was sooooo not Chuck E. Cheese! 

Needless to say, Chuck E. has been revamped! And now he's actually shown closer to mouse sized vs kid sized!

So here are some Chuck E. through the ages pics! The new Chuck is on the right!

The top image is probably one of the later ones, the bottom is the most recent Chuck! There was also a pic with him like that, but with the cap forwards! 

I can remember when the Chuck E. Cheese image looked like this:

He was wearing a bowler hat!! I think I might have even saved a token from this era too.

But then that's another thing...I remember when it was Showbiz Pizza! That was before Chuck E. Cheese! Although that was probably just in my early childhood! Can't recall what age, but just early on! Soon Showbiz Pizza became Chuck E. Cheese! I don't think Showbiz is still around! Did Chuck E. Cheese buy them out? Or did it just turn into Chuck E. Cheese?

These are things I don't really know! I just remember as a kid wanting to go to Showbiz Pizza, then it was all about Chuck E. Cheese! But this pic up here is kind of what I recall in my memories! There were more characters too, but this pic just really invoked a strong recollection, so that is what I went with! Oh Google, what would I do without you!

But yeah...the post started out just wanting to mention the new Chuck E. Cheese and how far his image has come over the years! Then it sparked the memory of Showbiz Pizza!

And now I really want some pizza, despite already having had lunch! ;)

MOVIE REVIEW--The Amazing Spider-Man

Sooo, as I learned a few things from my cousin when I took him to see this--the kid is smart! He'll be a senior in high school next year and is my youngest cousin, but he knows a lot of things! Some completely random but all entertaining!--they are seemingly redoing the Spider Man movies, yet this time they are based on the Amazing Spider Man comics. I forget which comic the first movies were based on though...

But anyway, this was pretty good! I enjoy comic book movies yet I never read comics, like the classic superhero ones. But this was good! Andrew Garfield was an amazing Peter Parker! I liked his role of Peter. Toby kind of played him more the geeky nerd, while Andrew played Peter as more of an awkward guy. He wasn't totally nerdy but he wasn't in with the "in crowd" either. I especially liked when he got back at the bully! Andrew just had that way about him, at times he even reminded me of my cousin, who is tall, kind of dangly as well and has dark brown hair too!

But Andrew was kind of hot! Not saying that about my cuz! That'd be weird! But anyway...somethings were done the same. Peter still allows a robber to get away who essentially kills his Uncle Ben. And then Peter wants revenge, only this time he doesn't get it in the first movie. I think my cousin mentioned that that guy ends up being the Sandman later on. Peter is still bitten by a spider and gains super powers. I especially liked the scenes when he discovers that he is super strong! And he has amazing reflexes.

Another difference is that for now, there is no Mary Jane. His first love is Gwen Stacy played by Emma Stone. She was good! I like Stone in the few movies that I've seen her in! She learns quickly that Peter is Spider Man, the vigilante who is sweeping the city and having bad guys turn themselves in as he searches for the man who murdered his uncle.

Along the way, we learn a bit about what his parents did. It's still kind of mysterious, but it involved Oscorp which is where we find Dr. Curt Connors who worked with Peter's dad and who essentially becomes the Lizard. He played a good creepy villain there too! It wasn't long before I recognized Rhys Ifans--yes I had to look up the name--as James Hook in the SyFy mini series Neverland! Seeing him again play a character missing a limb! Also just discovered he played Luna's dad in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1!

The plot was pretty good. Being a movie that's over 2 hours long, it did drag in a few places, but picked up again pretty quick! I didn't see it in 3D since I wanted to go to the cheap show, but you can tell which moments were meant for the 3D aspect. I especially enjoyed the shots though that let us see through Spider Man's eyes as he flies through the city using his spiderweb--which this time around isn't a power, but something he developed on his own by buying sciencey gear! Which was pretty cool! Peter was resourceful and a genius! And apparently had some extra cash floating around since he didn't have a job but could afford all these gadgets!

Overall it was a good action movie! I think this new set of Spider Man movies will be pretty good! Interested to see when Mary Jane comes in, if she does. My cousin says she comes in later when the romance between Peter and Gwen flops. But who knows if the movies will even go that far! But I did enjoy the movie, the actors were good and not annoying in their roles which is always a plus! Michael Sheen made a nice Uncle Ben and Sally Fields was a good Aunt May too! Would recommend seeing it if you like the comic book movies!

Next up...like in a few weeks once the crowds die down, I plan on seeing the Dark Knight Rises! The final Batman movie in this current franchise!

From February 10, 2012: Love Stories: What are some of your favorite fictional love stories?

MY ANSWER: I originally stated that I loved Jess and Pietr from my fave series, 13 to Life! And also Faythe and Marc from the Shifters series. In a way, I do still enjoy those love stories. Been reading lots of YA lately with review books, and I'm pretty hooked on Alex and Aiden from Jennifer Armentrout's Covenant series! That's my YA answer!

Now adult? Hmm...trying to think what was my last one! Seriously, this is a lot harder than I thought it would be! I can never have just one favorite! It's just not natural to me! There are wayyyy too many fabulous books out there that incredible authors have written. And I enjoy them all!

But for answers sake I think I will revamp my answer and choose Jess Haines H&W Investigations series!

Now I don't want to say who, but obviously one is Shiarra! And the love interest I am speaking of is the one we saw her with in the last chapter of her latest release! So if you've read it, you know what I am talking about and if you haven't you are not spoiled! So that is my new answer!

Toy Story 4!

Some more random news...

Disney and Pixar (and even Tom Hanks!) apparently are up for making a Toy Story 4!! I saw this yesterday, but after the blogger issue, I wasn't up for posting more!

But now I have to share!

There's not much info, other than knowing that this will likely be with the gang's new owner. I never did see the Hawaiian Vacation short that was in Cars 2.

There's also a new storyline in the works--not sure if they mean the movie or a short--but it will deal with Buzz and Zurg and a space-clad Woody and Rex! This is according to this article anyways, which apparently was from June 27, 2011!

Random Thursday

Soooo, have you heard?

You're probably thinking heard what? Yeah, I hear a lot of things. ;)

Anyway, the news I'm talking about is something I heard last week and I wrote it down. Apparently FURBY is coming back!! Does anyone else remember Furby? The madness of the hot new gotta have it toy! First off, are me and my family the only ones who thought that this guy looked like a gremlin from the movie Gremlins? Naturally as the more furry Gizmo, though and shorter. Much much shorter!

So this is what Furby looked like 14 years ago, cannot believe it's been 14 years! But that's what the article I read says and it sounds right! I would've been 10-11!

And this is what the newer one will look like, or one of them! From what the article said, it seems like he's a one color kind of deal. But you never know! Probably in a few months after his debut, he will come out in more colors.

Honestly, he kinda freaks me out! I don't like the glowing eyes. I think the old one was cuter. But this one is supposed to be way better! And since we've adapted far with tech since the first Furby, this guy will definitely be all compatible with MP3 players and whatnot!

He'll have some of the same features as the old one, such as never getting it to shut up--the article's words! Communicates with other Furbys...you know the whole deal. Another new thing is the freaky ass eyes that light up!

And he's going to be sold at $60 "a pop" just in time for the holidays! (More words from the article)

So what do you think? Do you think people will go nuts over this guy again?

Soooo mad!

I am getting so annoyed with with my blogger dashboard lately. 

There are times when it shows that I follow ZERO blogs! Zero! I follow wayyy more than that since I try to follow all the people who follow me. And it just shows nothing. And I cannot get a response when I email blogger or google or whoever it is that I send my request for help or answers.

Not sure if this was the issue people had and moved to Wordpress. Don't think it was from the few people I've talked to. 

But then after waiting getting totally angry and ready to burst, the blogs magically appear! At least they did last time. I am still waiting for that to happen again!

Worst of all, my "google reader" barely shows half! It has like 400+ blogs there, but I know for a FACT that I follow wayyy more than that! So apparently every time I click "follow this blog" through the google friend connector thingy, it doesn't add itself to that list there.

So very very irritated right now! I set aside this hour every afternoon to do my blog visits and now I can't do them!

Sorry for the ranting! Just wanted to get that off my chest since I had no one to personally vent to! If you don't see me around your blogs, you now know the reason behind that! Hoping it fixes itself soon.

EDIT: Naturally after I finished typing this rant and getting it all off my chest, the blogs magically appeared! It's soooo annoying when it happens, but I am glad that it fixes itself...just 20 minutes later than I wanted to start!

Behind the action scene: Fire Kissed 

First of all, a huge thank you to Jessica for having me here at a GREAT read. This is a great blog, and I am delighted to visit. I’m talking action scenes today, and I’m giving away a copy of my latest release, Fire Kissed (Shadow Kissed series, book four). All you have to do to enter is tell me a favorite action scene, be it movie, TV, or book. 

I like action scenes. They are fun to write, not only because there’s a lot of high-stakes excitement going on, but also because they strip characters bare. A coward won’t be able to hide behind big talk. A seemingly selfish character might sacrifice their own safety for another’s. Action scenes let the reader have a glimpse of what a character is really made of. You can imagine how important they are to a story. 

Action scenes work that way for authors, too. For example, when I write, I usually think I know exactly what a character is going to do or what the tone of the scene will be because, well, I’m the boss. But it’s during the action scenes in particular that I figure out my characters, that I understand how they approach a fight. 

Take the scene below. Jack Bastian, my hero, has been a soldier for over a thousand years (he’s an angel). The actual fight that’s about to ensue doesn’t bother him as much as the fact that he’s put someone in danger. This was pretty straight-forward for me. A long-time soldier would be a-okay. But Kaye Brand, my heroine, isn’t used to big fights. She’s been in a few scuffles, but nothing like what’s about to happen. She’s not the type to back down, but she’s not going to skip merrily into the fray either. I didn’t know really how she would feel until I was writing, and then suddenly I had it. Epiphany. And I had my firstborn to thank for it. 

The last thing Kaye wants to do is fight, but she doesn’t really have a choice. Her situation reminded me of when I was nine months pregnant with my first child. It occurred to me in that month that I would actually have to deliver the baby. The movies I’d seen about childbirth had somehow failed to communicate that I would have to participate in the activity. There was no way to back out. No way to say, thank you, but I’ll just keep her inside. I had one awful moment where I realized that there was no way out but through. 

And that’s exactly how Kaye plays it. 

The setup: Kaye is a firemage, which means she has a magical ability that takes the form of fire. The bad guy has sent wraiths (aka monsters) to attack her so that she may prove that her ability is worthy of his notice. Jack is an angel pretending to be a mortal body guard. He can’t reveal what he is and so has to fight like any normal man would. And here we go….

Kaye braced as Bastian flung open the door. She watched as he shifted his weight to the side and kicked the wraith ascending the front steps. He’d have to work on the human thing; that kind of force took something more. The creature fell backward, Bastian’s foot gripped at its chest. They hit the brick steps together with a dull whump. 

On instinct, Kaye leaped on the sprawling limbs to free Bastian. 

He hollered at her touch. Fire. She’d apologize later. 

The wraith shrieked, its dagger teeth bared, but it was pinned just long enough for Kaye to lay her hands on its yellow skin and make the monster—a woman, by the looks of it—burn. The sound in the creature’s throat went wraith falsetto as the flames caught. But it was the stench of the decay that made Kaye lose her fire. 

The wraith burned before her, its silhouette a human engulfed in Shadow flame. 

“You should run,” Bastian was saying. 

“You didn’t sign up for this.” 

Kaye laughed out loud. Run. Now he told her. 

She watched two more wraiths glide down the street toward the town house. Sirens wailed a block over. 

Help coming, as if they could do anything. As if law enforcement wouldn’t shoot the woman wielding fire too. 

“There’s nowhere to run,” Kaye said, recovering her equilibrium. She should know; she was the expert. “There’s no way out of this… but through. And I really need to be through with it.” 

“The host can be here in five minutes.” 

“And then Grey would know I was lying.” Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted another wraith spider-walking down the side of the building. “And he’d have to come after me.” 

“Then we’re going to fight?” His gaze flicked around the scene. 

Kaye snorted yes. 

“Don’t try to protect me this time,” Bastian said. 

“Don’t worry.”

I have to smile every time I read, “There’s no way out of this… but through. And I really need to be through with it.” That is me, aching all over, with swollen feet and a flattened bladder, yet still terrified to go into labor.
