Divergent’s Journey to the Silver Screen

Many of you have likely heard about, and are anticipating, the upcoming release of Divergent, the film based on the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth. If you’re a reader of this site, you’ve probably seen Jessica’s rave reviews for the other books in the series, Allegiant and Insurgent. The film versions of these sequels are already being planned, but first comes Divergent!

For those of you unfamiliar with the series, Divergent takes place in the future, within a dystopian, decaying Chicago. The protagonist, Tris, is about to undergo her placement test, which is meant help her determine which of society’s five “factions” she belongs in, based on her most prominent personality traits. When she discovers she possesses multiple aptitudes and equal abilities that place her in three different factions, she realizes she is Divergent. Tris is warned never to speak to anyone about these abnormal results, otherwise she will risk the repercussions of being an outsider in a world that only allows five types of people. After she chooses to live in Dauntless, a faction for the brave, she realizes hiding in plain sight may not be as easy as she hoped. As the city erupts into chaos and fighting between the factions, she is faced with many difficult decisions that could drastically impact the lives of herself and those she cares about.

Filmmakers went to great lengths to recreate the decrepit city Roth crafted in her books for the film. Massive sections of the downtown Chicago area were shut down last summer to film scenes, including the iconic Navy Pier Ferris Wheel and parts of Michigan Avenue. In addition to that, the crew created an entire housing project in the downtown area to for the Abnegation faction’s main base. There are even rumors of an intense aerial stunt filmed on the John Hancock Tower, one of Chicago's most famous skyscrapers. You’d be surprised what the city of Chicago lets filmmakers do in its streets; all of the Transformers films have also been shot in the city, and The Dark Knight famously flipped a semi down LaSalle Street.

Director Neil Burger reportedly decided to stay true to his style and vision of the film, rather than go the traditional route and interpretation of a dystopian future. He told Collider: “I wanted to do something different. We’ve seen a lot of post-apocalyptic movies, we’ve seen these other young adult movies. So I just thought that there was a way to do it in a much more cinematic way, to tell it visually, and also to tell it in a more real way.” For those who are unfamiliar with Burger and his style, you can stream some of his other films, like The Illusionist and Limitless online through platforms like DirecTV and Netflix. He’s described the filming style of Divergent as “something more real” than his other films: “Not raw in a gritty way but raw in an immediate and intimate way.”

            A big part of capturing that rawness comes from hiring the right stars for the film. Golden Globe nominated up-and-coming star Shailene Woodley will be playing the lead role of Tris. It’s the role of a lifetime, sure to make her a household name, but also one that carries about $85 million in production costs. When the time came to make the decision whether or not to take the role of Tris, Shailene said she reached out to Jennifer Lawrence for advice. Lawrence urged her to take the role.

            The other lead role in the series, Four, is being played by the relatively unknown British actor Theo James. While he may not be known all that well now, expect Robert Pattinson-levels of fandom from hordes of teenage girls once they catch him in Divergent. There is also no shortage of well known names in the supporting cast, either. Oscar winner Kate Winslet will be playing the villainess Jeanine Matthews, in Winslet’s first role as the antagonist. She told USA Today on the set how committed she was to the role: "[Jeanine] walks down the corridor and sort of just leaves this vapor trail. I knew I had to bring that intimidation." Other supporting roles have gone to stars such as Ashley Judd and Scandal’s Tony Goldwyn, who will act as Tris’s parents.

            If you do get a chance to catch Divergent, and love it as much as the book, you’re in luck. Summit Entertainment is already planning to start filming the sequel this May, with a release date set for March 21, 2015.

MY ANSWER: 

So this is my desk at work. When I'm taking a break and during my lunch break this is where I read my book! No outdoors for me. No good spots and plus the weather is rarely agreeable for it.

Not very exciting, but I can't wait to see everyone else's which I am sure are way better! ;)

EEP! I sooooooo cannot wait to read this one! I loved Josephine's Starcrossed trilogy and sooo cannot wait from something new from her! Sounds like it's going to be incredible!! And I LOVE this cover!!

Review--Rise of the Blood by Lucienne Diver

Weddings can be war.

Great. Tori Karacis’s face is on the front of yet another tabloid “news”paper, linked to Hollywood hottie Apollo Demas. It was ONE dinner, and she was pissed with him at the time. But that’s the least of her worries. Just before leaving for her cousin’s destination wedding in Delphi, she learns that her arch nemeses, Zeus and Poseidon, have escaped police custody.

Despite looking forward to seeing Detective Nick Armani in a tux, her bad pre-flight jitters are confirmed when Apollo, with his sexy new co-star on his arm, boards the same plane. A plane that a freak storm nearly tears out of the sky.

Lucienne Diver's Rise of the Blood picks up a few months after Crazy in the Blood. Tori's uncle is home safe and sound, but thing are far from calm. The newshounds have been calling Tori constantly over a picture that was taken showing her and Apollo having dinner. Explaining that to Nick wasn't easy, but he understands in some sense. 

To add to the matters, Tori is informed that Poseidon and Zeus have escaped their prison and are gunning for her. And anyone she loves is fair games as well. Tori and Nick escape the chaos though when she must return home to Greece for her cousin Tina's wedding. But trouble follows them across the seas.

Not only is Apollo aboard the plane, but he comes with a gorgeous actress on his arm, his new costar in a movie that her uncle happens to be making. Just as the plane gets ready for its voyage, it's attacked by Zeus and his lightening and so begins Tori's adventure to Greece with a near death experience!

Landing in Greece doesn't prove to be any safe, for now, she's on the gods' home turf. And there's a new enemy rising, Rhea, the mother of the gods. And she's about to bring about a whole new kind of chaos onto Greece, in the world ending variety!

I can't believe how fast I blew through these books, granted it was only three, but still. This is just an incredible series and I can't believe I only just discovered it! It seriously is the prefect blend of Greek mythology and Urban Fantasy and I sooo cannot wait to read more!

Lucienne really pushes the challenges at Tori this time, sure they are gods gunning for her, but that's nothing compared to having her new boyfriend meet her crazy family. Plus there are still strifes that keep popping up between Tori and Nick. It tore at my heart, because I am really rooting for these two. But I can see Nick's point. Tori, despite her not liking Apollo that way, really does do a lot for the god and spends a lot of time with him helping him or he helping her with whatever problems the other one has. I keep hoping the two will pull through in the end, but only time will tell as the series moves on. But the happier moments that Nick and Tori share together are definitely endearing and romantic!

Of course, that doesn't make the moments she has with Apollo any less steamy or heart-racing! This is a god who won't give up and I can't decide if I like that or not. I keep thinking of poor Daphne and Cassandra, but it seems possible that Apollo might have changed since those times, because he doesn't really seem that way with Tori. True, he throws out sexual innuendos left and right and never lets her forget that he wants her, but he still knows when to back off, for awhile at least!

Rise of the Blood is even more action packed than its predecessors it seems. There are lots of fights between Tori and her enemies, both new and old. And then there was a huge epic battle at the end that was totally jaw-dropping at several points! There are definitely a few threads that are being put into place now that might weave us into new story points! It's hard to say more than that without getting into spoiler territory, but I can safely say that the ending here definitely is a game-changing plan for Tori. Nothing and no one will be the same by the next book and I soooo want to read that one now!

I've said it twice now in my previous reviews of this series, but I'll say it again: if you're looking for an action packed Urban Fantasy with the perfect blend of Greek mythology this is the read for you! Tori is without a doubt one of my most favorite heroines now! She has a wicked sense of humor and she's strong. Even when she gets knocked down and out and beaten bloody, this woman gets up and fights again! She's a character you just have to love and you pretty much love her right away! I look forward to reading more of her adventures and whatever mischief she gets herself into!

Random Thursday

Today's post is a sort of rant/whine over beloved series that have been cancelled or are lost in limbo somewhere. A few of these it still remains unclear if they are forever over, or if they are just trapped in limbo, as I said.

Firstly, there's Lia Habel's Gone with the Respiration series. Lia stated on her blog back in October that it was in fact over, for now. The publishers are no longer buying the books and Lia is taking a break from writing. Hopefully one day she will feel inspired and finished Bram and Nora's story.

This one I still have hopes for since it did just come out last year. But thing is, I can't find anything on the second book, and that always makes me nervous. I love that Colleen Gleason is continuing The Gardella Vampire Chronicles, but in a new age!

I'm not entirely sure on the state of Linda Robertson's Persephone Alcmedi series either. Late last year, she did mention that the publishers might not buy more, but she still has more stories for Persephone. Or at least one more book! She was posting chapters on her blog for awhile, but I was waiting for all of them to be up before reading. She might self-publish I think, but there hasn't been word for awhile so it's more worrying on my end!

Wendy Roberts' Ghost Dusters Mystery series is another I'm concerned over! This one did get canceled, but last year, Wendy self-published two more novels in the series. I'm hoping it's just a matter of her writing them and not mentioning it just yet. The last one she wrote ended on a doozie of note and I am anxious to see how it will play out!

Those are all the ones I noted for this post. There are more, but there is some tentative word on when we might expect to see a conclusion to those. That will be a post for another day if they get delayed again! 

Review--Crazy in the Blood by Lucienne Diver

Hell on Earth. It’s not just an expression anymore.

It’s an ill wind that carries bad news, and Tori’s just had a double load of it blow through her door.

Just a few weeks after she prevented some rogue gods from blowing L.A. into the ocean, more dead bodies are turning up near the leftover crater. Bodies that have been shredded by something too big to be…shall we say, of this world? Worse, Uncle Christos has disappeared after stumbling onto a deadly cult masquerading as the Back to Earth movement.

The connection: Dionysus. Yes, that Dionysus. He’s resurrected his bloody fertility rite, complete with frenzied female groupies who tear men limb from limb. And he’s lured Demeter, goddess of the harvest, over to his side by finding a way to get her daughter away from Hades for good.

Predictably, Hades isn’t about to let her go without a fight. Unless Tori finds a way to bring her back, he’ll abandon the gates of Tartarus. At which time all hell will, literally, break loose.

Between saving the world, the woman, and cultists and her crazy uncle? So much for getting to the beach before all the good spots are taken…

The wine country is going through a heat wave of epic proportions, and it's not all about the weather. Beware steamy gods with seduction on their minds or brimstone in their blood.

Lucienne Diver's Crazy in the Blood is the second book in her Latter-Day Olympians series that I only recently discovered after reading a short story by her in an anthology. And I have to say I am definitely loving it! Tori is just such a great heroine. She's realistic. True, she's part gorgon and has the whole gorgon glare going for her, but I enjoy her personal humor. She says sarcastic things quite a bit, she's snarky, but I love her for it!

Two weeks have passed since the first book and you would think that means things are settling down, but oh no, they're just starting to get interesting! Meaning, Tori won't be taking any vacations for awhile! We open up to see Tori being question about a recent string of murders where the bodies had been shredded, totally gruesome. Tori's not sure what could've done it, but she knows that it wasn't anything human...or likely from our world.

Her Uncle Christos is still missing and we finally get some insight as to where he's at and what he's been doing. He's knee deep into a possible cult led by Dionysus and his worshipers. Tori is more determined than ever to find him, so she and her best friend Christie go to San Francisco where Tori's gotten a lead on her uncle and the case he was working. Along the way though, she gets hounded by Hades who is demanding that she find Persephone or else bad things will be happening here on earth and when the god of the underworld is telling you that, you better listen!

This was yet another read where Lucienne packs in the adventure and excitement! There's never any feelings of being overwhelmed. The events just flow into one another, such as Tori looking for her uncle who's caught up in the cult and she ends up investigating the cult and then that ties into even more of the going-ons. It reads better than I can explain it obviously, since I'm trying to avoid spoilers!

Tori, as I mentioned earlier, has a very wicked sense of humor. She's snarky and sarcastic to a tee! Granted, she knows when there's a time to be serious, but her main mood tends to have a sarcastic side.

Now let's dish about the romance! Yes, it's still the ever complicated love angle we got going on. It's not quite a triangle, for I don't think there's love between Tori and Apollo, I feel like that's more heat and sexual tension. Although, it does seem Apollo feels something for her, but his record for lovers hasn't panned out too well over the centuries; ie Cassandra and Daphne. 

Then we have Nick. I love Nick! He matches Tori in the snark department. He throws out witty barbs just as well as she does! And, oh the tension between those two! It does seem like they have a more concrete relationship. Well, more concrete. They've only been dating for two weeks-ish; from book 1 to book 2 and throughout. But when the shit hits the fan and Tori needs all the help she can get to go up against the gods (again!) Nick and Apollo will have to put their differences aside, or not, and work together to help the woman they both love.

This series is definitely becoming a fast favorite!! I have always love Greek mythology and this is a series that takes that and packs in an incredible Urban Fantasy world that has everything in it that I love; awesome heroine, snark, sexy heroes, heated tension, bursts of romance, more humor, lots of action...just everything!! I so can't wait for more in this series! One more book to go until I am all caught up! Crazy in the Blood was an amazing read and I highly recommend this series to any Greek mythology and Urban Fantasy fan! You will not be disappointed!

Just saw this one go up on Netgalley over the weekend! Put a request in and have my fingers tightly crossed! I've read the previous three with them, so I'm hoping that I get approved again! But still, this has been an adventurous series I am looking forward to its grand finale!

Review--Who Needs Enemies by Keri Arthur

Harriet Phillecky is a rare part elf, part siren and wanted by neither race. Not that she really cares. A successful news photographer turned paranormal investigator, she now has a 'family' of friends that includes ogres who constantly raid her refrigerator and take over her TV, and a dragon who drinks far too much for his own good.

But when the only elvan relative she has any contact with asks her to investigate the disappearance of a siren, she finds herself unable to refuse.

All too quickly the disappearance becomes murder, relatives come out of the woodwork, and a man she'd much rather forget steps back into her life. Harri wants nothing more than to run—especially when the evidence beats a path to the doors of those who'd long ago abandoned her. But when the life she's created for herself comes under threat, Harri has little choice but to hunt down a killer—before everything she holds dear is destroyed.

Keri Arthur's Who Need Enemies is her foray into the self-published industry. And it was pretty awesome! Although, it does ring a little differently from her usual style, but still pretty awesome! As I always enjoy a good mystery and Keri certainly delivers on that account!

Harri is part siren and part elf. She's pretty much an outcast to each species and the only one who really cares about her is her uncle on her father's side. Her father is a real winner as well, as she was an illegitimate child and he doesn't want anything to do with her, yet their paths certainly cross enough.

When her uncle comes to her asking her to look into the disappearance of a siren, Harri agrees, because her uncle seems really worried about the woman. But when the investigation just barely gets started, Harri finds the siren dead. To make matters worse, one of her friends who happens to be a dragon, is caught up in his own murder case as when he was flying (under the influence) he crashed into a helicopter and killed the people inside it. Troubles and problems are just barking at Harri's door. Especially when a troll comes knocking on her door and then knocking on her skull!

Where would the mysteries be without a little more trouble added into the mix? Such as Harri's old flame, Kaji, coming back to town and being one of the head detectives in the paranormal unit that is looking into the siren's murder. It was rather slow going trying to get their history out, but once we do, things make sense about the tension and hostility between them. Sadly, the romance factor in this one wasn't at all like Keri's previous series. In fact, there's really no romance at all. I wouldn't even call the tension between Harri and Kaji the romantic kind, just good old tension. But there is a moment or two between them where you can kind of see a mild spark of some sort. Definitely something to build upon!

This one was quite exciting! It seemed like every lead Harri would get would lead into a new problem or twist to the case. I was wondering how either one would get solved at this point, but solved they get! And I wasn't really expecting our bad guy at all. Granted, we started getting hints towards the end, but like Harri, I so wasn't prepared for what was to come!

I have to admit that I absolutely loved Harri's ogre friends. They are pretty much loud mouth, beer drinking, TV watching lugs, but they're lovable lugs! They hangout at Harri's place a lot since she has a big screen TV and they like drinking her beer too! They prove to be loyal friends more than once though, so it definitely makes them lovable despite their first appearance!

It's unclear as of now if Keri will write more in this world. Goodreads shows this as Harri Phillecki book 1, so maybe there will be more. Or maybe not. It's hard to tell at this point as Keri is still a published author and has her contracted books that must be met first. But yeah, would definitely read more in this series as this first one shaped out to be a very entertaining mystery read!

ATTENTION: New Chloe Neill Series!

Chloe Neill has released the info about her newest series to begin in the summer of 2015! For years I've loved her Chicagloand Vampires and her Dark Elite series that didn't quite go as far, so I am eager for something new!

Random Giveaway!

Hey all! With the past few Follow Friday posts I've done, I chose a beloved favorite of mine, among the many other picks, Old Magic by Marianne Curley! And I was quite surprised by how many people were excited about it and were adding it to their TBR pile! I remember finding this one at Waldenbooks back in the day at the mall. It sounded really interesting, so naturally, I made my way to the register lickety split!

Now, to me, it sounded like you all were "mentally" adding it to your list. I do that a lot as well! 

But I thought, if they actually have the book on them...they might read it sooner! You know, if they have the book, they will read it! (if you build it, they will come)

So I decided that I want to help 1 lucky reader/blogger/person out there get that book into their physical TBR mountain, so that they might read it even sooner! This seriously was like one of my all time favorites! I re-read a couple of times because it had everything I wanted in a read and it just blew me away!

It's pretty cool, as this ring plays a small part in the book. And no, not wedding bells, thank God! Too many teenagers having sex in books, it's best not to have them getting married either! (although I do admit to enjoying it when it happens, usually because the amazing author, *coughs*JLA*coughs* builds it up so you want the characters together forever in that way!)
