YALLFest Giveaway!

Okay, so I don't really have much of a recap to do regarding YALLFest! It was another pretty crazy year with me needing to be in multiple places at once and having no line buddy again this year. Still got to wait in line with lots of friendly fans! Some who even helped me get books signed when there was a limit! I also ran into Kate (@0cheekykare0) while in line for Julie Kagawa and met her newest addition to the family, Guy! He's only 2 weeks old and he's already meeting celebrities!! He's one lucky baby! ;)

So I was mostly successful in seeing all the authors I wanted to see. The only one I missed was Meg Cabot, because her panel was ticketed and that was where you got tickets to her signing line, so I was pretty much out of the running from the getgo! But it's cool! I met her a few years ago, I just thought if I could see her, I'd get the rest of my books signed! Really would like to see her NEXT year for when Remembrance comes out!

So yes, onto the giveaway! With all the hype and love for Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles and the amazing finale that is Winter...you can pretty much see where I am going with this...

But unlike other contests with a SIGNED copy of Winter, here you will also find a specially made poster of the GORGEOUS end-pages (that's what they were called, right?) of Fairest! I mean we all pretty much fell in love with those end-pages, so I decided to turn it into a poster! And it's hard to tell in this picture, but the poster is SIGNED by Marissa as well!

Again, I must limit this to US only. Sorry! I swear, once I get my holiday shopping done and then get a paycheck or two back into my account, I will be having that contest! Though at this rate, I'll be behind by a year when my blogoversary rolls around, but that just means more prizes then! I haven't forgotten you international peeps! MY ANSWER: This too sounds awfully familiar! I would want to transport into nearly any Otherworld Novel by Kelley Armstrong! Fiercely independent and strong women with a great circle of friends, and yeah, a super hot boyfriend! LOL!

Review--Winter by Marissa Meyer

Marissa Meyer brings us the ultra amazing conclusion to her Lunar Chronicles we've all been waiting for! Winter has come at last! LOL! But seriously, Winter was nothing short of epic and amazing! And with it's slightly intimidating 823 pages, this book reaches Harry Potter length in it's epicness! I was first a little amazed, I was thinking Winter will have one heck of a story and yet, still bring in everyone else we've met to date, Cinder included, to wrap up the series. And Marissa does this incredibly well!

I loved how everyone we've met was in this book, and the best part was that they all get about equal page time. We see tons of Scarlet, Wolf, Cinder, Kai, Iko, Cress, Thorne, Winter, and Jacin. I mean the switching of narration (third person) happens so seamlessly, it's remarkable! Even better, the chapters aren't even straight up one focused. I mean, we'll be sticking with a group of characters for a good 3-4 chapters before moving onto another set. And I say set, because really, the group and couples at large are pretty much separated throughout! Just when we see a reunion between one, one or the same one gets separated again, as does another couple. It's agonizing, because you really start to care about these people and you want them to be together!

Winter, as you might imagine, takes on our Snow White role. Being Levana's stepdaughter has not been the best life. I mean, you've all gotten a good idea of Levana's character by now. Even with her mini novel in between this and Cress, she's still the villainess. I still felt sympathetic to her in a sense, but still, she's made her own choices in life and they haven't been the best. She's still evil and vile. I was amazed that Winter turned out so well. True, she's got a bit of Lunar madness about her, but she's no more damaged than another abused child would be.

In this book, all our beloved characters are joined together and are working hard to get Cinder back on her throne that's rightfully hers. But it's going to take a lot of work and a lot of planning! And just wow...seriously wow! I was afraid that this 800+ page book would have some lagging in between the ready for battle, the battle, and then the aftermath...but we see NONE of that here! This book is pretty much action filled from page to page! There are different levels of action of course, some not as amped up as others, but still when all rolled together, I would've happily read another some odd hundred pages had Marissa wrote it!

There were several times in the book that I was overcome with the feels. The romance aspects, the danger, and of course, the laughs! This book moved me so much! And to think...I almost passed on this series when Cinder didn't completely WOW me, I liked it, but the whole sci-fi/space setting took a bit of getting used to. I'm glad I was eventually gripped into this series after reading Scarlet! Best decision ever! Which is rare for me, because if I am not gripped by book 1, I move onto the next book in my TBR Mountain of Doom. I think at this point I just had a terrifying TBR Pile, hence the reason I relented in moving onto book 2!

So much happens in this series, I wouldn't even be able to come close to summarizing it! In Winter alone, we see a LOT happen! I mean it's 823 pages for crying out loud! Definitely my longest read of the year to date! I was quite pleased...heck, overjoyed...with how the series ends. There was perhaps one lingering question I sort of had, but I don't know what the answer would be. But it's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things, I'll just go with the answer I'm hoping for, that way I am completely happy! 

If you're at all a fan of fairy tales and fairy tales retold, and enjoy the futuristic/space age setting, than this series was made for YOU! The Lunar Chronicles is a truly magical read and must be enjoyed!

I loooooved this author duo's first series. It was a vampire ones and I loved it! Melinda also wrote the Roswell High series that spawned the TV show! So naturally I read those and loved them too!

MY ANSWER: Even this one's hard to answer! LOL! I feel like a lot of books I read has some humor in it. There's always a good giggle moment or two in nearly every book I read!

Though I guess some of the most LOL moments in one book alone are the Charley Davidson series! Those books are hilarious!!

Charley is just one of those heroines who is basically funny all the time! Don't get me wrong, she has her serious moments and such. But she's just got that kind of humor about her where you can't help but laugh out loud for!!


Another series is the Lux books...

Daemon knows how to make a girl laugh! Even if he's being an ass, at least Katy would snark back at him some of the time! But yeah...I could always smile when he was around! LOL!

Back to That's a Fact Jack: A Collection of Utterly Useless Information [Updated] by Harry Bright & Jakob Anser! This book continues to amaze me with these factoids!!

Terrible. Simply terrible.

Are we sure it really works? Cause I get bit even when I do spray myself. It's like that find that one teeny, tiny spot that might have been missed!

Just gross!!!

GRAPHIC NOVEL REVIEW--The Iron King by Julie Kagawa, adapted by Sara Gundell, Ill. by Lidia Chan

Based off the New York Times best selling novels. The Iron King is the first book in the Iron Fey series, and follows the adventures of a girl named Meghan Chase. On her sixteenth birthday, Meghan discovers her little brother has been kidnapped by a faery race known as "the Fey" and even worse, replaced with an evil changeling and taken into the "Nevernever." Meghan bravely ventures into the faery realm to rescue him, and that's where an epic plot unfolds. This collected edition has never before images and character designs! 

As a huge fan of the Iron Fey Chronicles, once I heard Julie Kagawa had created (with help) a graphic novel version of The Iron King, I knew I had to have it! Especially in physical book form, as I am not sure my outdated Kindle does pictures...so lo and behold...The Iron King...in graphic novel format! Sara Gundell adapted the story so that it's shorter and able to fit into the proper format without losing it's story magic and then Lidia Chan brought the characters to life! And I must say, it was all quite magical!

The story pretty much follows along with the original novel, though it's been year since I read that! And after reading Ethan's series finale last week, seeing him as a four year old again was trippy! LOL!

The illustrations were good! I guess they follow an anime form more so than past graphic novels I read. For they were a tad different than some, but still totally incredible! I loved seeing Puck again and Meghan learning who she really is. And then Ash! Oh how I loved him!

There might have been a few scenes or moments that left me confused, where you turned the page and started on the next frame and feel like you missed something. That didn't happen too often though. The most prevalent scene that comes to mind is when we first meet Ash during the Wild Hunt. It was just sort of boom there he is. Then boom, it's over. And again, since I read the book years ago, I couldn't quite remember what was happening and such.

But those little moments were few and far between, so that was good! I also loved seeing Grimalkin! I love that little Cait Sith! He's so smart alecky!

Since this initially came to life in 2013 and 2014, I feel as if we will only ever see the first book in graphic novel form. Which I guess is all right. I mean, you won't see me being upset over more. But at least we all know how the series ends! Even Meghan's part of the story!

All in all, if you were a fan of the Iron Fey Chronicles to begin with and enjoy the occasional graphic novel, than I highly recommend picking this up one afternoon!

Review--Manners & Mutiny by Gail Carriger

If one must flirt…flirt with danger.

Gail Carriger brings the Finishing School series to a finish with Manners & Mutiny and I must say, things do go out with a bang! Sophronia has had a time of it all while attending Mademoiselle Geraldine's, but a proper lady knows not to complain as such! 

While I could never really fully get into this series as a whole, I have enjoyed it on some level! I guess, it's just been too long since I read the first book and even binging the remaining books continued to leave me befuddled as to a few things. Then add in the fact that all these events take part before the Parasol Protectorate series and I'm right about lost! LOL. Though I want to say I can dredge up some inklings of the first series Gail wrote and the connection to this one. As we've seen a few characters and then the epilogue here gives even more headway into that series.

The year is winding down and as the girls come back after the holidays to reign in the new year with their fellow classmates, quite the disaster occurs and everyone must leave the floating school, everyone except for Sophronia of course! Sophronia is determined to uncover who is attacking the school and basically stop them, using all the skills she's learned as of late.

This series is definitely fun and quirky, you could say! Sophronia is a fun heroine and her friends are just as amusing and entertaining! Even as the series wraps itself up we learn a few shocking revelations about them.

Then there's that ever present YA love triangle. Truly, it's a love-hate relationship with those. It all depends on the execution of it for it to work for me. This one was a bit muddy. Sophronia has feelings for Soap, the lowly sootie, but who's now a newly made werewolf when she bargained the last time around to save his life. It's not just his race that stands between them in having a public relationship, though sadly, it does factor in when you consider the time in society, but there's still a handful of other things as well. Then there's Felix who claims to care for Sophronia and yet, he betrayed her and her friends last time around as well. He was never able to stand up for himself and leech away from his father. And yet, we learn a thing or two about him.

What kind of drove me bonkers was that Sophronia never really seemed to have a choice in mind. She clearly was driven away from Felix after his betrayal, yet I never got that she cared for Soap than more than just a friend. She constantly tells herself she doesn't feel anything for him...I don't know. Maybe it was how I read it, she had no conflicting feelings when she said such things to herself, so I just didn't get that "I love Soap" vibes. Though we already know she does care for him in a sense, he's been her friend since the very beginning after all.

The series ends rather well. There was just one character whose fate was left untold...Sophronia goes on in the afterword that tells us pretty much where all her friends left off, except one. And I felt disappointed by that. But what can you do? Otherwise, I felt like things wrapped up nicely. And I feel confident in my assumption, we do see her briefly in the Parasol Protectorate series, as there was mention of her next assignment just towards the end of the book.

The Finishing School series was a fun and enjoyable read! I can't wait to read more from Gail Carriger, as it stands I still need to read Prudence and I am so looking forward to that one too!

I'm still two graves books behind on this series, but hoping to get caught up soon!!

So very excited for this one too! Sadly, Susan and Alexandra Bracken aren't coming too close to my area. Naperville would be doable, I just don't think I can get off work that day. I don't have much vacation time for being new, and I have special trips coming up that I really need to save time off for. But if I think I can swing it, I might go. In the meantime, I have preordered signed copies with Good Choice Reading!

1. THE 5TH WAVE--soooo cannot wait for this one!! Have been looking forward to it since I first heard of it last year!!

2. ALLEGIANT PART 1--I actually enjoyed this series in its entirety. Including the much scorned ending. Even though this is a part 1, I am curious to see if the movies will keep it. Actually, I will be very surprised if they do!

3. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES--never read the book, but the movie poster looked rather good (not the one pictured here)! So I'll be intrigued to see this one! 

4. ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS--I didn't overly enjoy the first movie, but I will be curious to see this one.

6. ASCENDANT--no movie poster available for this crudely named Allegiant Part 2. *eyeroll*
 

7. SHATTER ME--though technically, I think this was being made into a TV show. At least that's what I thought I heard. It was earlier this year and already losing the details. But I know Tahereh is suppose to help write/work on it!

WHAT I HOPE MAKES IT TO THE BIG SCREEN:

8. OBSIDIAN--need I say more? Wish they could just get Pepe to play Daemon! LOL! I forever seen him as Daemon!

9. WICKED LOVELY--one that's been in the works for awhile, but since options were renewed this past March, I remain hopeful.

10. TALON--this was optioned BEFORE it was even published!! I am SO hoping Hollywood takes this on!
