Stacking the Shelves

Stacking the Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks! The meme is now hosted by Reading Reality.

I got through another week! All about surviving the busy season. Things weren't too bad this week. It has become less stressful since we added two more people to our team and this week we initiated a "no skip" rule when it came to requests to fulfill and omg, it was wonderful! So many times we had people skip so that as soon as I completed my turn, it would start over practically and I'm third in line so yeah, it was stressful and then I have to keep an eye on all those tickets...it's madness. But this "no skip" policy was wonderful because I felt like I didn't have to pick up everyone else's slack. It was pretty quiet for books wise. This week I have TWO book signings! TWO! And oddly, once again, for the SECOND time THIS YEAR...there are two signings I would've liked to attend but they were on the same night! So sadly, I'm just missing out on one, I had won a book from one of the Fierce Reads authors touring, but since I knew I couldn't attend, I didn't read it right away to have signed, instead I'm going to a signing for an author I'd never imagined meeting as I read the book years ago when Borders was still around! He actually wrote a sequel to the book I read and I remember enjoying the first book despite not remembering much else other than that. It was pre-blogging days too, so I've no record of my love for it! Lol. But since I spent 2 separate 3 hour trips to my storage unit looking for said book, I'm going to that signing! Lol. My second signing is with Shelby Mahurin for The Scarlet Veil which I am ALL kinds of excited for! Give me all the vampires! I even came across my bonus alternate chapter that I got from Fairy Loot one year and thought, why not get that signed too since my S&D trilogy is all signed up?!

Here's what I got this week:

A Multitude of Dreams by Mara Rutherford
A Taste of Darkness edited by Amy McCaw & Maria Kuzniar--
reading this now and LOVING it! At the time of writing this I've read 5 stories and all were pretty darn creepy! I'm thinking this might have to be my book to giveaway in my Halloween giveaway next month!

Then I also got the September Owl Crate book! I usually always look forward to the September pick as it tends to be their "creepy" or "spooky" book choice for Halloween reading! It was actually one I was curious about so I was happy to get it. The alternate cover though isn't quite what I would hope for. It's not bad, just meh? It's pretty in an artistic way, but I guess when I compare it to the standard cover I find myself feeling meh. Lol.

My box is actually the newly designed one. I only ever got one of these teal beauties! I might have to save it for nostalgia's sake! I meant to take a new picture of said box but just forgot. So here's my stand in picture since I don't like to share the actual book in case others like being surprised! I tend to look for the title spoiler myself these days to ensure I want it, but I like being surprised by the design itself, so I try to keep this as a spoiler free zone as much as possible! Unless I tend to see said "surprise" covers a lot before I get my own then I figure it's safe enough! Thankfully haven't been spoiled for too much lately!

And that was it for me this week! Not too bad! I can't remember what preorders I might have coming next week. I will be keep a very close eye on my TSV B&N edition as my preorders tend to arrive on Fridays which is my signing day and the mail time itself is unpredictable. It could be a close call, so I might have to call the PO again the day before to ensure that I have my book in time for me to get down to the bookstore before traffic hits!

What all did you get this week?

Review--Flight 171 by Amy Christine Parker

Devon Marsh is haunted by secrets. Like the identity of the person who killed her twin sister, Emily, in a hit and run accident last Halloween, which Devon has vowed to uncover. Like the things Devon said to Emily just before she died.

But she’s determined to start fresh when she boards a four-hour flight along with her classmates for their senior class ski trip. Devon never could have guessed those secrets would surface in the most terrifying way when a supernatural creature hijacks their flight and gives the students a deadly ultimatum:

Choose one among them to sacrifice before the end of the flight. Or the plane will crash.

As the clock ticks down, the creature slowly unearths the passengers’ deepest, darkest secrets—and reveals that one of the teens on the plane is responsible for Emily’s death. The students must agree on a sacrifice, or there won’t be any survivors. But can Devon find a way to stop the creature, or will she give in to her anger and let revenge take control?

Tis the season for spooky and creepy reads and what could be spookier than being trapped on a plane with a demon? Amy Christine Parker’s Flight 171 will give you a whole new reason to be terrified by flying on a plane! I mean, that can be a little frightening in and of itself when you think about it. But this was a most thrilling and chilling read with a mystery to boot!

It’s only been a few months since Devon’s twin sister, Emily died on Halloween night. Devon blames herself even though she didn’t kill her sister. Her sister was a victim of a hit and run, her body just left alone on the side of the road. Devon wasn’t the best sister just before she died and the guilt eats away at her constantly. The fact that she was forcing herself to go on this ski trip with her classmates to act a little normal for her parents was the least she could do. It was a trip she and Emily were going to take together, but now she’s just with the rest of her senior class.

It starts out so innocently. A red eye flight with other passengers, Devon’s mom is a pilot and was even on the flight as she got a connection to her next job, so she wasn’t totally alone. But then there is one passenger among them that kind of gives Devon the creeps. You would think a harmless little old lady would be nothing to fear…you would be wrong.

The little old woman is in fact a demon, or a demon is possessing the body of an old woman. The old woman’s body is just about used up and the demon is looking for a new vessel. It puts everyone on the plane into a deep sleep, leaving just the teenagers awake. It’s likely because they are the most “viable” body choice being just at the prime of their lifetime versus the other adults and few babies that were on board. The demon is even going to let the teens choose who will be the sacrifice. Choose one among themselves and the demon will let everyone go and have the plane safely land at its destination.

Naturally, this is not something that can be done lightly and in order to choose the “right” sacrifice, the demon plays all the teen’s deepest, darkest secrets on the inflight video devices and much is revealed. Everyone has their secrets, everyone is willing to do whatever it takes to keep them. Who among the teens is the least deserving of life? The teenagers will have to vote amongst themselves to make a decision that is quite literally damning.

If you are looking for a read that is downright terrifying, then look no further! I mean, first off, we have an unsolved murder, the murderer might even be on the plane with them! Then add in a literal demon from hell who plans to possess one of the teenagers and makes no qualms about telling them they will literally be a prisoner in their own body for the rest of time...it was quite frightening! The madness among the teenagers when it came to deciding who ought to be the sacrifice felt very reminiscent of The Lord of the Flies!

Though it was a decidedly quick read, I felt like the length was just right. There’s only so much that can happen once the plot presents itself. There were still a few surprises along the way that I was not expecting that made for an intense read! This is definitely not something you would want to read when you are on said airplane traveling anyway, unless you’re a daredevil reader, lol! I wouldn’t be able to! It’s like watching LOST when on an international flight…just inviting trouble!

I pretty much pegged down the “killer” so to speak once it became obvious the killer was among Devon and her friends. Even when you peg down your number one suspect, it's still a surprise when it actually gets revealed! Many authors have led me astray with the array of suspects, so you really never know whodunit it until the reveal happens.

The ending was by far the most spectacular ending I’ve read from a horror novel! These are the endings that I love and hate all at the same time! Because you know it’s the ending…but is it?! Lol. One of those that will leave you developing theories that can’t ever go anywhere since this is a standalone! But again, since it’s a horror novel, the ending felt just right and omg, I am still thinking about it now!

If you’re looking for a bone-chilling read this spooky season, I would highly recommend Flight 171! It’s a real scream! ;)

This week's question is: Has reading helped you become a better person? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

MY ANSWER: I like to think so. I mean, I know I have better vocabulary. I mean, I'm not top notch sophisticated but I'll throw out words that my family does a double take on. And even thought the stories I read are all fictional, they still have threads of reality mixed in with them or even realistic situations being had by vampires and werewolves.

I feel like I'm struggling to analyze this question properly, like how level of deep are we saying by "better person?" Like enhanced vocab? Because, check! Better at recognizing villainous people? Maybe check, checkish. I tend to avoid most people unless I'm at a bookish event! Lol. I feel like I do have a very healthy awareness about myself and surroundings to make sure I'm not in scary situations.

So I guess in essence reading as taught me a lot and that in turn has made me a better person. Although I like to think I was a good person beforehand too. Perhaps I was more naive in my younger days, but weren't we all? Adult me would very much like to go back in time and have younger me speak up more in certain situations that come back to haunt me, moments where my outspoken self wasn't quite as vocal...not that I am super outspoken now, but yeah. I feel like I'm getting off topic now. Lol.
