ARC Review--Bargains and Betrayals by Shannon Delany

Locked away at Pecan Place, Jessie finds her situation to be even more dangerous than she feared. While she struggles to maintain her sanity and discover answers about the group that seems less and less like any legitimate government agency, Pietr fights to keep their relationship alive. But very aware that his mother’s time is running out, Pietr makes a deal he doesn’t dare tell Jessie about. Because the deal Pietr’s made could mean the death of far more than his tenuous relationship with the girl he loves.

I received this ARC from a trade with Cindy@PrincessBookie.com

Everyone knows my obsession with Shannon Delany's 13 to Life! Loved it from cover to finish and I have become fast addicted to the series, so when Cindy at PrincessBookie.com was offering this in an ARC trade I jumped like a madwoman. Or a crazed book reader!

Anyway, Bargains and Betrayals was just amazing! One thing I liked was that instead of just Jessie narrating, Alexi is too! They go back and forth so we get to see what's happening with Jessie at Pecan Place and what's going on in the outside world with Pietr and everyone else! Which once again, a helluva lot happens!!

No loose-end was left unturned from Secrets and Shadows. The problems that were around were pretty much answered. But of course new problems always arise! Pietr is determined to do whatever it takes to get Jessie out of Pecan Place and to save his mother. There are so many problems to handle and so many more pop up as Pietr will do anything to be able to save the girl he loves along with his mother. Anything.

Once again, I can't go into too many details because the more I talk, the more I'll reveal that I shouldn't. The book brings in old enemies as well, so remember who we've met in the past two books as they just might make a return appearance.

Jessie and Pietr's relationship has to be my fave YA one ever! Sure I like a lot of other ones, but their relationship is just my fave. It's so intense that sometimes I'm forgetting that they're both 17! They have a lot of issues that always come between them and they work through them together. And I love that! I can be a sucker for these kinds of romances! Man, why couldn't Pietr have been at my high school!

In my opinion the book was very well paced. There's so much danger and suspense going on throughout that I almost finished this yesterday when I started it, but had to run an errand. The ending was fantastic! OMG were there some surprises! Now I'm in agony wanting to read the next book in the series! It wasn't too excruciating of a cliffhanger, but still it's a cliffhanger and as we all know, cliffhangers are just pure evil!

Overall rating 5/5 stars! Cannot wait til the next one! Want it now! :)

In My Mailbox

In My Mailbox is a weekly blog post hosted by Kirsti over at The Story Siren and inspired by Alea at Pop Culture Junkie.

Not too much this week, getting harder for me to find my new releases at good prices since Borders is getting too many of them.

Here's what I bought:
Nightshade by Andrea Cremer (Yes, I have the ARC form from last year, but I looved this new cover!)
Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies: Compendium Monstrum by Suzanne Schwalb & Maragret Rubiano (Saw this on the way to the checkout and thought it was so cute! A funny little book with info on the monsters and survival!)
Bloodlands by Christine Cody
A Match Made in Hell by Terri Garey

Then as I already noted, I bought Nightshade for the paperback cover because it was so awesome, awhile back I had emailed the publisher because Andrea had mentioned that you could get the new cover flap. I emailed them back in June and hadn't heard back nor gotten anything in the mail. So guess what came in the mail right after I bought the book?

Yup! My cover flap! Oh well. Like I said, I liked this cover!

And the best thing to come this week came from the publisher for review:

(ARC) Half-Blood by Jennifer Armentrout w/SWAG!!

Thanks again, Kate!

And that was my week! What did you get?

5 – If you don’t have a blog to post, just leave your list in the comments =)

This week's topic is: FAVE CHILDHOOD TV SERIES!

*in no particular order

I LOVED this show as a kid! Sure sometimes the episodes really creeped me out! But oh, it was just good! Probably corny now, as many 90s TV shows are, but I loved watching this one! Thankfully it was on in the late afternoon rather than at night! ;)

Another absolute fave of mine! (Can you tell I liked the supernatural shows?) Was super bummed when they replaced the main girl with another. But I loved how each episode had Fi dealing with something creepy and then she would always be looking up things on her laptop to learn the lore behind the creepy creature! So awesome!

One of my non-supernatural faves! This show was just funny because you had the group of kids/preteens at a summer camp that they really didn't like. So they had some misadventures while trying to have a better time at camp! Pretty funny!

Power Rangers were another show I got a little addicted to as a kid! Of course my fave episodes were when Amy Jo Johnson was Kimberly aka The Pink Ranger! Mostly because she was a brunette like me! Was super upset when they replaced her with the blonde! Much like on So Weird! And geek that I am, I did buy the Power Rangers Movie (the first one) awhile back for $5 at Target! I laughed so hard when I was watching it too!!

Yup! I was a Rugrats girl too! I don't know why, just that it was a fun show to watch when I was kid. You can kind of see me going backwards a little with these shows! Rugrats were pre-supernatural days for me!

And the Winner is...

And the winner of the SIGNED copy of Shiver is...

Lindsay@LindsayWrites!

Congrats Lindsay!

I have emailed the winner and she has 48 hours to respond or else a new winner will be chosen!

Review--Daimon by Jennifer Armentrout

For three years, Alexandria has lived among mortals—pretending to be like them and trying to forget the duty she'd been trained to fulfill as a child of a mortal and a demigod. At seventeen, she's pretty much accepted that she's a freak by mortal standards... and that she'll never be prepared for that duty.

According to her mother, that’s a good thing.

But as every descendant of the gods knows, Fate has a way of rearing her ugly head. A horrifying attack forces Alex to flee Miami and try to find her way back to the very place her mother had warned her she should never return—the Covenant. Every step that brings her closer to safety is one more step toward death… because she's being hunted by the very creatures she'd once trained to kill.

The daimons have found her.

I'm having a GREAT reading day! Finished the book I started yesterday and read 2 novellas! Whittling my TBR pile down a book at a time!

Anyways, I decided to read the prequel to Jennifer Armentrout's Half-Blood, Daimon, because I'm curious! For some reason I was thinking--before I even read the cover description--that Daimon was going to be a person. I was wrong daimon is a group of beings, I guess we can see them as "demons" but I'm not sure if that's right. This series is going to have the Greek gods at the center--sort of I think, yay! Basically they are mentioned but didn't really make an appearance in Daimon, although they were mentioned.

Alex and her mother have run away from the Covenant where they lived all their lives. Why they ran away wasn't clear, only that it was to protect Alex. Since then she and her mother have moved from place to place in order to be safe from the daimons, and anyone who might drag them back home.

The story was a very fast paced one for a novella/prequel/short story--whatever it's called, since I'm not sure! We get a glimpse of Alex's life, the life she tries to lead but what comes in the way of it. She tries to be a normal teenager, but doesn't do as well as she had hoped. And then things start to go very very wrong for her. Daimons attack and she is forced to go on the run.

Again, I have another shorter story to review and it's difficult since I cannot say too much. But I enjoyed getting to look into Alex's world. To get to know her before we read her full story in Half-Blood. We get the insider's look of how she got to be where she starts off later. Alex was a very enjoyable character. She's a seventeen-year-old I would've loved to be friends with when I was that age! She's snarky and doesn't always try to hide who she is. Sure she keeps the important stuff secret that would not be good for humans to know, since she's a half blood, one born of a god and human parent, but still she's not afraid to be her human self when the need arises.

This was a great read and was pretty quick too. A good introduction to what we are about to see in Half-Blood.

Overall rating 5/5 stars

Review--Toxic by Eve Langlais

Either you’re with me, or you’ll feed me.

Humans are for eating and I am not one to play with my food, so I’m baffled as to why one geeky mortal doctor makes me wish our kind could be together without my brand of love being toxic. As if suffering from human emotions isn’t problem enough, our world is about to engage in a war where our chances of survival are slim at best. And no one wants to listen.

But, I didn’t become the general of the vampire Queen’s army by being diplomatic. Everyone will fight in the upcoming battle, or they’ll feed my troops and I. Either way, all things living will do their part.

I am after all the Blood Countess, toxic lover to humans, vicious bitch to my enemies, and my word is law.

Eve Langlais' Toxic was a quick read, yet still a good one! I suppose you would call it a novella because of its length. But still it was quite fascinating.

First I loved that our main character, Ellie, was once the Blood Countess Elizabeth Bathory! She is a very vicious character, yet there is some heart to her. She's a true vixen, yet she has a deadly curse, if she were to make love to a man, he would die, because she's fluid in her state of arousal.

The vampires are outing themselves to the public, but they have ulterior motives. The vampires know of a daemon apocalypse coming, daemons are slowly entering our world and killing humans. Vampires need humans for their blood source, so they need them alive. Thus why they want humans to know about them and that they aren't monsters--in a sense.

In part of that plan, Ellie must agree to an interview of sorts with Rafe, who is a doctor. He wants to study her and relate his findings to the public and help ease the tension humans may feel. Ellie has a strong attraction the doctor but she does everything in her power to fight it since it could mean his death. It doesn't help that the doctor likes her too.

It's hard to say much about this one since it was a quick read. Overall it was a good read. I will admit that I wasn't too big on the romance scenes that occurred, but that's just me not being a big romance fan. And the scenes were pretty intense to my delicate mind! :)

Ellie was a great character, snarky and dangerous. She's not a woman you want to be on her bad side with. Rafe is a very handsome fella with his own secrets. I sort of had an inkling as to what his secrets were, but I was still taken by surprise by their depths.

Review--Black Night by Christina Henry

MADELINE BLACK IS AN AGENT OF DEATH, MEANING SHE ESCORTS THE SOULS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE DIED TO THE AFTERLIFE. OF COURSE, NOT  EVERYONE IS HAPPY TO SEE HER...

If obstinate dead people were all that Maddy had to worry about, life would be much easier. But the best-laid plans of Agents and fallen angels often go awry. Deaths are occurring contrary to the natural order, Maddy's being stalked by foes inside and outside of her family, and her two loves--her bodyguard, Gabriel, and her doughnut-loving gargoyle, Beezle--have disappeared. But because Maddy is Lucifer's granddaughter, things are expected of her, things like delicate diplomatic missions to other realms.

Dear old granddad wants Maddy to go to the faerie court and negotiate a new land and power treaty. The fallen's last emissary was decapitated, so it's up to Maddy to keep her head--both literally and figuratively.

Wow! Once again Christina Henry sucks me deep into her world with Maddy, Beezle, Gabriel and everyone else! Black Night was an incredible sequel to Black Wings! *Also to note how I love the covers have Maddy looking fierce with wings, but not real wings.

The action takes off with a bang before it's not long when Beezle and Gabriel go missing. While trying to help out a local werewolf pack, Maddy realizes she's in far too deep into a political game which has no way of ending nicely. While struggling to get Beezle and Gabriel back, she still has her annoying and forced fiancee, Nathaniel to deal with, and she unfortunately, needs his help in finding her friends.

Despite being a little on the short side, a lot happens in this book. A lot that impacts Maddy's life happens. She goes through many battles, both internal and external. Dealing with the usual enemies and new ones she's got a lot on her plate. The action is still pretty jam packed with lots of tension too. For Maddy also has to deal with the faerie queen, who's known to be a real you-now-what!

Once Maddy realizes where her beloved Gabriel is, she's got to face all her own fears, plus impending danger and doom, to save him. And of course her half brother as well who's still out to kill her. Maddy just seems to gain more enemies than allies it seems.

There are definitely some scary and intense moments for Maddy, it kind of shocked me. But it helps define Maddy's character and makes her stronger. The end, while satisfying still leaves you craving for more.

This week's question is: Talk about the book that most changed or influenced your life (was it a book that turned you from an average to avid reader, did it help you deal with a particularly difficult situation, does it bring you comfort every time you read it?).

MY ANSWER: Ohh, this is sort of a good one. Although there hasn't been a book that really influenced me much in dealing with tough situations. The book that totally grasped me and made me into a readaholic was Demon in my View by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. I mentioned it was also the book that started my paranormal addiction. It was my first vampire story and I loved it! Of course it sort of helped that the main character was named Jessica and she was a writer! But still I LOVED it and it totally drew me to the "dark side"!

Review--Overbite by Meg Cabot

Meena Harper has a special gift, but it's only now that anyone's ever appreciated it. The Palatine Guard — a powerful secret demon-hunting unit of the Vatican — has hired her to work at their new branch in Lower Manhattan. With Meena's ability to predict how everyone she meets will die, the Palatine finally has a chance against the undead.

Sure, her ex-boyfriend was Lucien Antonescu, son of Dracula, the prince of darkness. But that was before he (and their relationship) went up in flames. Now Meena's sworn off vampires for good ... at least until she can prove her theory that just because they've lost their souls doesn't mean demons have lost the ability to love.

Meena knows convincing her co-workers — including her partner, über-demon-hunter Alaric Wulf — that vampires can be redeemed won't be easy ... especially when a deadly new threat seems to be endangering not just lives of the Palatine, but Meena's friends and family as well.

But Meena isn't the Palatine's only hope. Father Henrique — aka Padre Caliente — New York City's youngest, most charming priest, has also been assigned to the case.

So why doesn't Meena — or Alaric — trust him?

As she begins unraveling the truth, Meena finds her loyalties tested, her true feelings laid bare ... and temptations she never even imagined existed, but finds impossible to resist.

This time, Meena may finally have bitten off more than she can chew.

Meg Cabot's Overbite was a tremendous sequel to Insatiable! What I still can't quite figure out is if this is meant to be the last one, the ending suggests that it could be, but it still leaves room for more.

It's been 6 months since the events of Insatiable and Meena is doing her level best to adjust to her new life working for the Palatine Guard, trying to get Lucien Antonescu off her mind, as well as Alaric Wulf. But things start to get majorly complicated in her life, first she runs into Lucien when he saves her life and things start getting dicey elsewhere as well. At work there has been disastrous ramifications that have led to a new addition to the team. Alaric doesn't trust Father Henrique from past experiences and there is definitely something off about the man that gives Meena uneasy feelings.

There's still plenty of action and intrigue in this one, although it is much much shorter than its predecessor. The mystery element while still there, isn't as big as I was expecting. There are still plenty of shocking revelations at its end though that can either be THE END or to be continued... I have yet to figure out which it is!

The romance rating is pretty good. Meena fights her attraction to her old love, Lucien, although there's still something there between them. They tend to go back and forth a bit. Although Lucien continually claims to love her no matter what. There are however, some bumps in their relationship that occur this time around. Alaric is the other potential boyfriend material for Meena. As we know from Insatiable, he likes her. He's more attracted to her than any of the other women he's had in his life prior to meeting her.

I honestly couldn't pick a "team" for this book. I liked both guys and every time I found myself liking one more than the other, one of the two would do something to change my opinion of them. While frustrating for me, it was still enjoyable to read. Enjoyable to see who Meena ends up being with in the end.

Jon is there as well, and it might just be me, but he kinda annoys me sometimes. He's so eager to join the Palatine Guard and impress Alaric. Ugh. I just can't put into words why he annoys me and causes my dislike, I guess it can be a good thing sometimes not to always like a character. Jon's not a bad guy, just mighty annoying at times and tries a little too hard to be liked by Alaric and the Palatine Guard.

But still like I said, it was an enjoyable read. I know it's getting mixed reviews this time around and I still liked Insatiable better than Overbite, but Overbite was still a very enjoyable read whether it concludes Meena's story or if there will be more I am satisfied with where we left off.

Overall rating 3.5/5 stars

A Perfect Blood releases February 21, 2012

Random Thursday

Has anyone ever really watched Disney's Snow White carefully? I was watching it for who knows how many times with my niece and there's a part I recently caught, since I hadn't watched it in a few years so I probably didn't catch on.

Anyway, we all know that Dopey--one of the fave dwarfs--is mute right? He doesn't talk because he can't or whatever. So he's silent the entire movie right?

WRONG!

Okay, mostly right, but there is one teeny tiny part in the movie where Dopey speaks. Or screams really! It's when the dwarfs are coming home and first seeing Snow White and they think she's a ghost. Dopey is sent upstairs and when he sees Snow White still caught up in the sheet, looking like a ghost, he screams! He finally makes a sound!

Anyone else ever think that was a tiny bit odd?

Here's the YouTube clip that I found that has the scene I'm talking about. It's about 2 minutes in and goes to the 3rd minute or so.

Also while searching for this video I happened across some YouTube videos of the Snow White ride that used to be at Disney World! Anyone else remember that?! I liked it when I was a kid, and remembered it was kinda scary too. The witch was there a lot and Snow White wasn't in it at all! But when I went a few years later I recall Snow White finally being there at the end!

Although on my last trip nearly 8 years ago, the ride was no longer there.

Review--Vision Impossible by Victoria Laurie

Abby Cooper, the FBI's newest civilian profiler, can add something else to her resume: spy. The CIA and the air force need her help. The military has had digital photography software created to capture one's aura--just like Abby can--from miles away. Except now their only prototype sits in a drone aircraft that's been stolen--a major breach in security, because every country's leader can now be identified by his individual aura.

Once the terrible reality of the situation sinks in, Abby springs into action. With her fiance, Dutch Rivers, by her side, she is eager to do her patriotic duty by stopping the criminals before they set their diabolical plan into motion. But the deeper Abby gets involved in counter-intelligence, the more she makes herself a prime target...

Despite Victoria Laurie's Psychic Eye Mystery switching over to hardback, I still had to get myself a copy. Luckily it was in plenty of time before Borders made their statement about closing forever (sob)!

Vision Impossible brings Abby deeper into the investigative side of her mystery solving. Hard to think it's only been 3 years time for Abby since she met Dutch back in book 1. This series has really gone far. It might be considered one of the series that doesn't move forward a whole lot, it's a typical mystery series really where there's a crime and our heroine must save the day with her fiance, Dutch!

Like always Abby ends up getting in way over her head! While going undercover with Dutch, who takes on the identity of a criminal, who should walk into the apartment right when they get started? The bad guy's girlfriend who wasn't supposed to be in town! So yeah, their investigation gets dicey very early!

There's plenty of danger to the series, someone is out to get Abby and she has no idea who it could be since she's neck deep with the criminals. Abby even ends up working along side of one when she catches his interest. Uh-oh!

In the end for the big reveal, I was off! I thought I had it pegged down but was wrong--but only slightly! So maybe half wrong! I totally love this series and it's weird since there's nothing supernatural going on at all, despite Abby being a psychic! I still don't get it myself why I like this series so much!

Abby is a great character! She's quirky and funny! She's one of the only heroines I know who doesn't swear and if she does, it's a quarter to the swear jar! Not my regular kick a$$ UF heroine, but a more subtle heroine. But like I said, there's still plenty of action and trouble Abby gets into! There's always trouble when Abby's involved unfortunately, but she does manage to keep her head on!

Overall rating 5/5 stars! I LOVE this series!

Hoping that I can get myself to Bouchercon for a day since Victoria Laurie is supposed to be there!!

Waiting on Wednesday

                     I hate waiting...
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog post by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights releases we're eagerly awaiting.

Oh man! The list of books I am dying and desperate to read grow right alongside my TBR pile!! It's insane!!!

Love can never die.

Love conquers all, so they say. But can Cupid’s arrow pierce the hearts of the living and the dead—or rather, the undead? Can a proper young Victorian lady find true love in the arms of a dashing zombie?

The year is 2195. The place is New Victoria—a high-tech nation modeled on the manners, mores, and fashions of an antique era. A teenager in high society, Nora Dearly is far more interested in military history and her country’s political unrest than in tea parties and debutante balls. But after her beloved parents die, Nora is left at the mercy of her domineering aunt, a social-climbing spendthrift who has squandered the family fortune, and now plans to marry her niece off for money. For Nora, no fate could be more horrible—until she’s nearly kidnapped by an army of walking corpses.

But fate is just getting started with Nora. Catapulted from her world of drawing-room civility, she’s suddenly gunning down ravenous zombies alongside mysterious black-clad commandos and confronting “The Laz,” a fatal virus that raises the dead—and hell along with them. Hardly ideal circumstances. Then Nora meets Bram Griswold, a young soldier who is brave, handsome, noble . . . and dead. But as is the case with the rest of his special undead unit, luck and modern science have enabled Bram to hold on to his mind, his manners, and his body parts. And when his bond of trust with Nora turns to tenderness, there’s no turning back. Eventually, they know, the disease will win, separating the star-crossed lovers forever. But until then, beating or not, their hearts will have what they desire.

In Dearly, Departed, steampunk meets romance meets walking-dead thriller, spawning a madly imaginative novel of rip-roaring adventure, spine-tingling suspense, and macabre comedy that forever redefines the concept of undying love.

I saw this one awhile back and immediately became entranced! I sooo can't wait to read it! I mean what more could a paranormal girl ask for?!

After all that, arriving at Titania's beautiful palace should be a relief. But Dana is soon implicated in an assassination attempt against Titania's granddaughter, and forced to leave her father behind as she and her friends flee for their lives. Will he be able to prove her innocence before the forces of the Seelie Court--or worse, the Erlking--catch up with her? And will she save her father before he pays the ultimate price in her stead?

Jenna Black's Faeriewalker novels finally comes to a conclusion in Sirensong, and while the story ends, there's still the feeling of continuation with the characters and their world. Once again, I am delighted by this fact, even though I may never hear from Dana again about her misadventures with her friends.

Things are complicated to say the least. First she's forced to go to Faerie when it was a big ordeal that she never go. Prince Henry is a real jerk and of course there's the trouble their group gets into while traveling. There's a lot of excitement going on!

Dana's relationships with her friends are entering the danger zone. Both Keane and Ethan love her. Teenage love, sigh! (eyeroll) What makes things difficult is that this love triangle isn't so much of one since Dana doesn't really care for Keane in that way. But when she and the boys along with Kimber are on the run, the boys are having their own battle trying to win Dana's heart.

We know by now that Dana has trust issues, hers are to the point where she feel like she must always keep secrets from her friends, and this little way of life is about to nip her in the bud.

Trying to keep herself and her friends safe is going to take a lot of work. And she still has to go about proving her innocence in the attempted assassination of Titania's granddaughter, as well as trying to find the real would-be-killer.

I've enjoyed this series, yet Ethan wasn't my fave guy. I much preferred Keane and was saddened that Dana never felt anything for him. But alas I can't always win with the relationships I like in books! The Erlking is still a very interesting character as well. He's sort of like a Dracula in a sense. Not bloodsucking, but still mysterious and somewhat self-serving, yet willing to help as long as he sees an outcome to benefit himself.

The ending overall was enjoyable, like I said. I truly loved reading this series, fae books always intrigue me for I love seeing the different rules and ways the authors give their fae.
