Review--Black Night by Christina Henry

MADELINE BLACK IS AN AGENT OF DEATH, MEANING SHE ESCORTS THE SOULS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE DIED TO THE AFTERLIFE. OF COURSE, NOT  EVERYONE IS HAPPY TO SEE HER...

If obstinate dead people were all that Maddy had to worry about, life would be much easier. But the best-laid plans of Agents and fallen angels often go awry. Deaths are occurring contrary to the natural order, Maddy's being stalked by foes inside and outside of her family, and her two loves--her bodyguard, Gabriel, and her doughnut-loving gargoyle, Beezle--have disappeared. But because Maddy is Lucifer's granddaughter, things are expected of her, things like delicate diplomatic missions to other realms.

Dear old granddad wants Maddy to go to the faerie court and negotiate a new land and power treaty. The fallen's last emissary was decapitated, so it's up to Maddy to keep her head--both literally and figuratively.

Wow! Once again Christina Henry sucks me deep into her world with Maddy, Beezle, Gabriel and everyone else! Black Night was an incredible sequel to Black Wings! *Also to note how I love the covers have Maddy looking fierce with wings, but not real wings.

The action takes off with a bang before it's not long when Beezle and Gabriel go missing. While trying to help out a local werewolf pack, Maddy realizes she's in far too deep into a political game which has no way of ending nicely. While struggling to get Beezle and Gabriel back, she still has her annoying and forced fiancee, Nathaniel to deal with, and she unfortunately, needs his help in finding her friends.

Despite being a little on the short side, a lot happens in this book. A lot that impacts Maddy's life happens. She goes through many battles, both internal and external. Dealing with the usual enemies and new ones she's got a lot on her plate. The action is still pretty jam packed with lots of tension too. For Maddy also has to deal with the faerie queen, who's known to be a real you-now-what!

Once Maddy realizes where her beloved Gabriel is, she's got to face all her own fears, plus impending danger and doom, to save him. And of course her half brother as well who's still out to kill her. Maddy just seems to gain more enemies than allies it seems.

There are definitely some scary and intense moments for Maddy, it kind of shocked me. But it helps define Maddy's character and makes her stronger. The end, while satisfying still leaves you craving for more.

Overall rating 4.5/5 stars

  1. Wow, Ellie does sound very feisty - I definitely want to get on the wrong side of her!
