Teaser & Top Ten Tuesdays

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Purple Princess of The Purple Booker.

Here are the rules:

1. Grab your current read
2. Open to a page
3. Pick out 2 lines that are SPOILER FREE
4. Name the title, author, etc.

Well, I decided it was time to start my re-read of OUABH & TBONA to lead me into ACFTL! Hopefully I will do right and pace myself with these! Fingers crossed! Lol. At the time of writing this, I actually haven't started OUABH--off to a good start there--so I just chose one of my favorite quotes from the book...only I didn't make page number notes in that area! Apologies.

This week's topic is: Top Five Bookish Jobs I Would Do for Free (Real or Imagined) (submitted by Susan @ Bloggin' bout Books)

*in no particular order
**once again struggled to think of a full 10 picks for this, I'm sure I'll see some today that I would think sounds like fun! Lol.

5. BOOK REVIEWER--
does it count if I do it already? Lol.

Let's Discuss: Re-Reading Books

What makes you decide to re-read a book? Is it when you need a comfort read? Something to help you find the joy of reading again? I'm not usually a re-reader myself, my TBR is too full of books I want to read for the first time that I don't usually spend time re-reading books but I find myself breaking my rule these last few years.

Re-Reading Books

I remember wayyyy back at the beginning of my blogging life, I would re-read quite a bit just because I didn't have new reads at the ready. So I would visit favorite reads and just read them again and again. Then I would travel the shelves of Borders going up and down shelves looking for new reads and not leaving the store until I found one. Good times. Lol.

Then I joined a discussion group and that help get me recommendations on occasion and I would read those and then pick up more from those authors backlist until I was caught up and waiting for new releases. Then I started attending the now deceased RT Booklovers' Convention which were a LOT of fun! I think by 2012 the YA genre was taking off and I came home with LOTS of books! Then I started going to more of those and kept coming home with LOTS of books and soon I had more books than I knew what to do with! Lol.

I still read endlessly, whenever I can. I don't get out much. Lol. So nowadays with a TBR pile that's in the 3 digit numbers, I don't really spend too much time re-reading books I've read before despite loving them. But when it came to Stephanie Garber...I decided I had to make an exception. I've got a bad memory for things when it comes to books since I read so many. Events and details cross wires, and I didn't want that for Stephanie's books! So I decided to re-read them! I did this for Finale, I think...maybe? I know I re-read that whole trilogy before OUABH and then I re-read that one before TBONA and I am now re-reading them again for ACFTL later this month! It's my one exception to my "I don't have time" rule! Lol.

So what about you? Do you re-read books even with a tower TBR pile of unread books calling your name?

Graphic Novel Review--Hide by Kiersten White, Adapted by Scott Peterson, Ill. by Veronica & Andy Fish

A high-stakes hide-and-seek competition in an abandoned amusement park comes to life in this graphic novel thriller.

What would you do for $50,000? For Mack, the prize money would be life changing. She knows her time at the women’s shelter is already up. And she’s good at hiding. At least this time, her life doesn’t depend on it–or so she thinks.

The challenge is simple. All fourteen competitors must spend seven days hiding in an abandoned amusement park from dawn to dusk. There’s only one rule: Don’t get caught.

But as the people around her begin disappearing one by one, Mack realizes this competition is more dangerous than she’d imagined, and that together might be the only way to survive.

Rendered in stunning full-color art by beloved comic artist Veronica Fish, this gripping graphic adaptation of Hide fully immerses you in the chilling and page-turning horror story of Mack and her fellow competitors as they fight to make it out of the Amazement Park.

I dove into another short read, this time picking up Kiersten White’s Hide, graphic novel style! Scott Peterson adapted the story and it was illustrated Veronica and Andy Fish. It’s always fun reading a graphic novel based on a novel. There’s a certain kind of enjoyment one gets when reading a favorite book in a new way.

Following the storyline of its predecessor, 14 young adults are brought to an amusement park for a competition. It’s easy enough, play a game of hide-and-seek, don’t get “found” for seven days and you could win $50,000! It’s an opportunity to start over, an opportunity to have a new life and start things off right. For Mack, it will help her forget her horrible past and live a nice quiet life away from people.

But naturally, things don’t go as expected. Each day two people will just disappear, having been “found” and casted out of the game without so much of a goodbye. Mack and the others start to suspect something might not be quite right in this park. It becomes clear that they are not the only ones in the park.

This was once again an amazing story! I felt like it followed the novel fairly well. Having read it last year I can’t recall all the finer details but the story at large stays the same and even knowing what happens I still found myself taken by surprise on occasion.

The illustrations were wonderfully done! I always enjoy seeing different art style when reading these kinds of books and this one was spectacular in the art department. I’m not much of an art critic, I don’t remember styles and such. I just know when I like things! Lol. This one felt like a natural sort of curves and the coloring was stunning.

I have to admit, seeing some of the scenes in here was intense! If you remember there was quite a bit of violence in this one! Seeing even the violent scenes was a little intense. Lol. And of course if you’ve read the book, you’ll remember what’s hunting them and seeing that was the stuff of nightmares!

In the end, this was a nice quick read that was a lot of fun! It was still a spooky read too! It’s definitely one of those reads that’s fun for the reader who read the book or maybe wants to read it but takes a shorter route. I’ll be curious to see what the film version of this will be like. If I recall, it was optioned for a TV series. I just hope I have whatever streaming service it’s on!

If you want to read something truly spooky with a terrifying storyline then look no further than Hide!

Stacking the Shelves--A Mailbox Full of Happiness

Stacking the Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks! The meme is now hosted by Reading Reality.

I survived another week! Literally! All went well with the job front. We had a 9am call (which is 2 hours after I officially start, as I tend to log in around 45 min earlier to check email and tickets) in which I agonized over what the news was going to be. It didn't help that I was the first one on said call 4 minutes early and everyone else was slower to arrive, I kept thinking this was it...I'm not going to make it...but then within minutes our greater team leader told us we were all safe. I've been here almost 2 years now and I'm still not 100% clear on our team hierarchy kind of thing. More in terms of who all out there is on THE team. We have our smaller teams I feel like from the main team...so it gets a wee bit confusing at times, especially since we're all remote...and in different states. But yes, it was huge relief to know that I was still employed and not going to have be in a state of fretting again. Honestly, after that, the rest of the week became a blur! We're ramping up into our busy season, but luckily our direct team is even fuller than last year, so we'll be in a good place. In bookish news, holy cow! This Tuesday was a HUGE release day! I had ordered a few too many books during B&N's preorder sale as I lost count of how many were actually ordered but they all arrived this week! Plus a few Fairy Loot editions!

Here's what I got:

Prince of Thorns & Nightmares by Linsey Miller
Midnight Showing by Megan Shepherd
Curious Tides by Pascale Lacelle--
B&N edition
Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco--
B&N edition
Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco
A Twisted Tale Anthology edited by Elizabeth Lim

My Fairy Loot special editions that arrived this week were:

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead--
FL edition

Then I won a contest from Jennifer Estep and received a SIGNED book and an Amazon gift card!

Conquer the Kingdom by Jennifer Estep--SIGNED!

THANK YOU Jennifer!

Then for review from the publisher I received:

The Ruined by Renee Ahdieh (ARC)

THANK YOU Penguin Teen!

Then I received some preorder goodies swag from two authors:

From Ava Reid I received:

character cards
a SIGNED bookplate
character art

THANK YOU Ava!

From Delilah S. Dawson I received:

bookmarks
a sticker
a SIGNED bookplate
a postcard

THANK YOU Delilah!

And then I bought one of Erin A. Craig's hand-sewn ghost mug rugs because they are just so cute!

Then last week I forgot to include one of my new map purchases, as I had tucked it somewhere safe and just totally forgot to snap a picture! I bought yet another map from Fantasy Scrolls, mainly because it was on sale! Lol.

the map from Once Upon a Broken Heart of The Magnificent North!
bonus items of a small map of Valenda & a bookmarkish item that had Caraval on it, so I kept it! Lol!

Then lastly, I bought two t-shirts when they were on sale from my usual "dealer," because they were bookish and I had been eyeing them at the time!

One looks like the classic Disney logo with the words READ BOOKS
the second says I Love Books with a FOX sleeping on books...yes, I had OUABH in mind when I saw this! So it was perfect! Lol.

And that was it for me this week! It was a mailbox full of happiness this week that's for sure! What did you get this week?

Review--The Unfortunates by Kim Liggett

When seventeen-year-old senator's son Grant Tavish is involved in a fatal accident, all he wants to do is face the consequences of what he's done, but the consequences never come, even if headlines of "affluenza" do. The truth soon becomes clear: Due to his father's connections, not only will Grant not be held accountable for his actions, he's going to get away with murder.

When a long Tavish tradition approaches, a cave excursion on the Appalachian trail, Grant seizes the opportunity to take justice into his own hands by staging an accident and never coming back. But before he has a chance to enact his plans, the cave system collapses, trapping him miles beneath the surface with four other teens from much less fortunate circumstances. As they struggle to survive, they share their innermost secrets and fears, and just when it seems they might be on track to finding a way out, they realize there's something else down there.

And it's hunting them.

I squeezed in one more read before the weekend even really started! This time I picked up Kim Liggett's The Unfortunates! It's been awhile since I last read Liggett's books but I remember enjoying them for the delightful creep factor! This one had a good mysterious vibe going on, being trapped in a cave, total darkness! What could be scarier? I mean, besides the unknown entity that's following Grant and the other survivors?

Grant is still dealing with the aftermath of the incident a few months later. We don't know exactly what this incident is, but based on the blurb you can get an idea of what happened. Life has been oddly mundane since that day. Yes, he still has to take weekly drug tests. Yes, he has a court date coming up very soon. But he is still Grant Franklin Tavish the V, a senator's son with many options and a bright future ahead of him. So when the cave excursion comes about, Grant decides it's time to take it on since his father did it at his age, as did his father before him and so on. But Grant has other ideas for the excursion.

Grant has been racked with guilt ever since that night in December when the incident happened. He's haunted by it. So much, that he's deciding to take matters into this own hands. When the cave excursion starts, he deliberately leaves the group to take his own entrance, for perhaps a more challenging challenge. But then things go horribly wrong, a cave-in occurs trapping him...and as he soon learns, four other teenagers deep inside the cave.

Grant had wanted to die, he wanted to end his guilt and suffering and the pain of what he did. But when he sees the other teenagers, Shy, Maria, Kit, and Darryl, he feels obligated to help them escape. As he feels that somehow the cave-in had to be his fault for when he was climbing down.

Liggett sets up a very creepy atmosphere! The only caves I've ever been in were the ones in Branson, and one other during a school camping trip. They are pitch dark and ultimately creepy. I mean the way the rock formations occur and create hazards, it was a terrifying thing to read about as these teens try to find their way out. They also have no food or water, as Grant was doing a "survival mode" kind of weekend, and the other teens weren't really expecting anything bad to happen either. So the clock is ticking for their survival.

But if the elements aren't going to kill them, then surely the shadowy creature will! Because yes, there is something else down in that cave with them, hunting them! If that isn't the stuff of nightmares I don't know what else is! I think one of the most terrifying kinds of monsters (other than humans, that is) are the ones you can't see, the ones you don't know what they are!

Although, I did make some guesses as to what was happening fairly early on. I will say that Liggett did throw me off my theories for awhile but then in the end I was proven correct! That in itself did still make for quite a terrifying read though! The final-final ending did give us a few new facts to help put the pieces together, but it did kind of paint a confusing picture. It made me question a few other things that weren't exactly explored thoroughly. It almost made me wonder about the identity of the mysterious thing hunting everyone in the cave! My own thinking might have dived a little too deep into the metaphors, but what can you do? Lol.

This was a pretty short read, I honestly think I could've read it in one day if it weren't for work, but alas it pays for my books, so I kind of have to do the job. Lol. This was a pretty fast paced read, but I felt like the meat of the story didn't really kick in until after the first 50 pages or so. But those pages were necessary in setting up the story and leading us into the plot at hand. Just one of those things you realize after finishing the novel.

If you're looking for a quick spooky read with a twist, this is the read for you! Kim Liggett is a master of the twisty, spooky reads and I highly recommend any of her books!

Review--How to Survive Your Murder by Danielle Valentine

Alice Lawrence is the sole witness in her sister’s murder trial.

And in the year since Claire’s death, Alice’s life has completely fallen apart. Her parents have gotten divorced, she’s moved into an apartment that smells like bologna, and she is being forced to face her sister’s killer and a courtroom full of people who doubt what she saw in the corn maze a year prior.

Claire was an all-American girl, beautiful and bubbly, and a theater star. Alice was a nerd who dreamed of becoming a forensic pathologist and would rather stay at home to watch her favorite horror movies than party. Despite their differences, they were bonded by sisterhood and were each other’s best friends.

Until Claire was taken away from her.

On the first day of the murder trial, as Alice prepares to give her testimony, she is knocked out by a Sidney Prescott look-alike in the courthouse bathroom. When she wakes up, it is Halloween night a year earlier, the same day Claire was murdered. Alice has until midnight to save her sister and find the real killer before he claims another victim.

Danielle Valentine has done it again! She has written yet another bone-chilling thriller that leaves me breathless! How to Survive Your Murder was so incredibly amazing I am at a loss for words here! It was horrific and bloody and a raging good time! I am not a horror movie fan at all, but I do find I can enjoy a good twisty thriller/horror novel and Danielle of many names is one of my favorites!

Alice is your classic horror movie buff! She's an introvert who loves watching all the gory slasher films and discussing them with her best friends. They always talk about how they would survive in a slasher movie and what things not to do, how to become that Final Girl...the one who lives! So on Halloween night, she's all set to stay in and watch some movies, but her friends convince her to come to a party in a cornfield, because it'll be fun! Her older sister, Claire also nags at her to come and Alice reluctantly agrees.

When she decides to skip the corn maze part, leaving her sister to go it alone, it's a decision she comes to regret for days to come. For when Alice went her own way, Claire ended up getting killed by a boy who worked for their father at their family-owned gym.

Fast forward a year, life has changed drastically. Alice's parents divorced, her father drinks, and she and her mom live in cramped apartment trying to get by. But then Alice meets a girl whom she silently dubs Sidney Prescott, who magically transports her back in time to that fateful night. Alice has until the stroke of midnight to save her sister, and not to die herself.

All goes according to plan...except more girls start getting murdered instead and Alice will have to figure out just who the murderer really is, as the one they always thought was the killer, may be innocent after all.

This was one twisted and chilling read! Things suspended from reality a little bit with the time traveling part, but honestly it gets explained in a simple and believable manner. Then it just becomes more of your classic thriller with the heroine running from a murderer and trying to save her friends (and sister!). Along the way though, we learn a bit about what was going on behind the scenes. Things that didn't get explored the first go-around since Alice was elsewhere.

I have to say, trying to solve the whodunit was challenging! I changed my mind so many times! Lol! I think I started to suspect the culprit towards the end, kind of just before it was revealed! And oh wow, was that a trip! If that wasn't shocking enough, the ending is one that really through me! I think I might have actually shouted as I read those last few lines! Lol!

While I would've liked a little more detail and answers to the supernatural element that was involved, those things will have to remain the true mystery. I guess the easiest answer is accepting what it was at face value. It was trippy for sure but I positively loved it!

If you're looking for a creeptastic thriller then How to Survive Your Murder is the read for you! Some mysteries should probably remain mysteries and this is a book that will prove that fact!

This week's question is: Have you ever stayed up late reading a book? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

MY ANSWER: In my younger days I did! Not so much nowadays. I get up early for work and then I wake up even earlier than that to exercise, so I tend to go to bed by 8 these days! Lol. On weekends if I'm going full steam I might be up later reading but never in the wee hours. I'm more a morning bird than night owl! Lol.

Books from the Backlog #51

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread.  If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. This meme is hosted by Carole's Random Life in Books!

After years in Wonderland, Alice has returned to England as an adult, desperate to reclaim sanity and control over her life. An enigmatic gentleman with an intriguing job offer too tempting to resist changes her plans for a calm existence, though. Soon, she’s whisked to New York and initiated into the Collectors’ Society, a secret organization whose members confirm that famous stories are anything but straightforward and that what she knows about the world is only a fraction of the truth.

It’s there she discovers villains are afoot—ones who want to shelve the lives of countless beings. Assigned to work with the mysterious and alluring Finn, Alice and the rest of the Collectors’ Society race against a doomsday clock in order to prevent further destruction . . . but will they make it before all their endings are erased?

I added The Collector's Society by Heather Lyons to my TBR in February of 2015...that was a pretty busy week actually based on my Goodreads numbers! Lol! This one sounded incredible! An adult Alice, a changed Wonderland? I LOVE those kinds of stories! But alas, it remains unread. I blame the fact that it's on my kindle and kindle reads are always forgotten because they cannot be seen. They do not stare and judge my like my physical TBR pile does! Lol. I do need to make a better effort of reading this one just because of its awesomeness!
