Stacking the Shelves

Stacking the Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks! The meme is now hosted by Reading Reality.

It was another week! A shorter one since I took Friday off for a longer holiday weekend and so far it's been nice. Sadly not getting much reading done since my aunt came into town and I've been hanging out with family. Honestly, things have been pretty quiet. Work is ever so slowly picking up. Every once in awhile things get crazy, but then they quiet back down until the next thing which is good I guess. It will help prepare us for when we start getting busier at the end of the summer!

Here's what I got this week:

The Poisoner's Ring by Kelley Armstrong
Curse of the Wolf King by Tessonja Odette--
SPECIAL EDITION SIGNED!

And I finally got the book that was sent to my sister's house by mistake! For review from the publisher I received:

Ruling Destiny by Alyson Noel (Early Copy)

THANK YOU Entangled Teen!

Then I received my interactive read along for The Ballad of Never After from A Touch of Magic Designs!

I haven't opened them yet as I figure I will slide them in when I re-read TBONA before ACFTL later this fall! I can't wait to see them!!

And then I won the Series Enders Reading Challenge monthly giveaway for April and got an Amazon gift card!

THANK YOU Sandy!

And that was it for me this week! What all did you get?

This week's question is: Are you reading more e-books lately? (submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver's Reviews)

MY ANSWER: Absolutely not. Lol. I'm terrible at remembering I have ebooks. I tend to read faster with real books. I've figured out why too. It's because I can see what the whole page looks like...font, line spacing, word size and all AND I can see how many pages I have left until the end of the book. I believe I psychologically note all these things and read at the desired pace. With an ebook I have zero clue to anything. I've tried using the "you have X minutes left in chapter" or "you have X minutes left in book" and they are never accurate whatsoever. I've timed myself when it came to chapters and I end up reading much longer than their estimated time.

It's because of this that I find I can't quite totally enjoy myself. Usually it's because I'm thinking of whatever challenge I'm trying to complete or even trying to surpass my Goodreads challenge and wondering just how long this book is and the answers are all unclear. I still enjoy the book, don't get me wrong. I just do so much better with the real book.

Books from the Backlog #32

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread.  If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. This is a meme hosted by Carole's Random Life in Books!

A short story written in an unusual format, Four Houses tells the story of a teen girl who finds herself in a field surrounded by four Victorian houses. Over the course of the story, Maddie visits each home, and is ultimately faced with a ghastly decision. With a surprise ending, Four Houses demands readers answer the question: Which house would you choose?

Four Houses is a super short story that I still have not somehow read even though I've had it since July of 2014! I blame owning it on my Kindle, I've already mentioned how bad I am at remembering those books! Lol. I've at least one more book by Victoria to read before she left the writing world behind. Sigh...always sad to see, but as long as the author is happy, I guess I am reluctantly happy for them! I just wish they still wrote books! Though, I'd almost even hate to have this counted towards my Goodreads goal since it's so short. It feels like cheating! Lol.

Review--A Game of Retribution by Scarlett St. Clair

Become enchanted by the fantasy world of gods and mortals in bestselling author Scarlett St. Clair's reimagined New Greece. Readers are "hopelessly addicted" to the story of Hades and Persephone. Hades, God of the Dead, does not take sides or bend the rules. He makes no exceptions to these values―not for god or mortal, even his lover, Persephone, Goddess of Spring. Usually, fear prevents retaliation. But not this time. When Hera, Goddess of Women, approaches Hades with a plan to overthrow Zeus, he declines to offer help. As punishment, Hera sentences Hades to perform a series of labors. Between killing mythical monsters and recovering deadly stolen artifacts, each feat seems more impossible than the last and draws his attention away from Persephone―whose own tragedy has left her questioning whether she can be Queen of the Underworld. Can Hades maintain the balance he craves?

Scarlett St. Clair continues the Hades Saga in her bestselling series that follows a modern day Hades and Persephone with A Game of Retribution. This is basically book two of the Persephone series but from Hades point of view and I have to say, I think I like his POV best! His character is just a little ore intriguing to me and I love knowing what he was thinking in all those complicated moments Persephone had!

While Persephone is off dealing with her own problems, we learn that Hades had more than a few of his own that he was juggling. Firstly, Hera has come to him and wants him help in overthrowing Zeus from his kingly reign, but Hades refuses to trade a poor king for a poor queen, so Hera then threatens his and Persephone’s relationship, promising not to bless any union they may have and knowing that she is the goddess of marriage, just how damning that ultimatum can be. Hades then agrees to a set of trials that she will command of him in order to “win” her approval. It’s much like the trials Hercales had to compete.

Meanwhile, as Hades unwittingly awaits her command, he meets Detective Alexious who is looking into a case involving missing young women, who she believes may have been hurt by Dionysus. So Hades has yet another task added to his to-do list.

It feels like Hades had his own full plate going on when Persephone was dealing with much of her own troubles at the same time. Every once in awhile their paths and problems collided, but I guess I just found it odd that they spent so much time apart. I know this is my second time experiencing all this, but I felt the same way in Hades’ first book as well. They have a complicated love story to say the least.

I did find some of the romance to be a bit overwhelming. I know this is a romance book, that part hasn’t escaped my attention, but I guess in my time away from this world, I forgot just how many sexual encounters Hades and Persephone shared. I’m the kind of reader where less is more, since less usually means more impactful moments instead of dozens of sexy times. But still I come back again and again! I don’t let the overwhelming parts of this romance read get me down too much. Again, this is just a “me” thing and didn’t really impact my enjoyment overly much.

This was a pretty fast paced read when I come back and think about it! I dove in head first and couldn’t bring myself to stop too much beyond normal issues like work and sleep. Lol. I am eager to try to get back to this series as soon as I can! I know Hades’ third book comes out at the end of the summer so perhaps I will pick up the next book just before then. If I recall, I believe it had a cliffhanger, so I’d rather not have to live through that devastation for long, but the final book of the series isn’t slated to release until November, so I may make myself hold out a little longer before starting the next parts!

Though it may not seem like it, I really do enjoy this modern take on Hades and Persephone! I love that it still has enough of that old times feel of when gods walked among man, though my mind is still blown away by a few of their attitudes…well, mainly Demeter! She’s a real trip! This is definitely a series I would recommend to fantasy romance fans! I would also recommend it to lovers of Greek mythology mixed with romance! It is a fun series and I am eager to see how it will all end later this year! This is definitely a series for mature audiences and those who are not faint of heart!

Overall Rating 4/5 stars

Can't Wait Wednesday

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

A vicious rivalry.
A forbidden desire.
A curse only her enemy can break.

After twenty years stuck in a fae convent with no word from whoever abandoned her there, Briony Rose is all out of hope. But when her parents suddenly claim her and reveal she’s a lost fae princess, she’s burdened with the weight of a kingdom on the brink of collapse. To secure her family’s precarious position, she must marry a wealthy human stranger. She would have done her duty with pride…if it weren’t for Thorne Blackwood.

Thorne Blackwood harbors three things: a secret name, a love for baked goods, and a long-standing plan for revenge on the family that destroyed his own. Briony Rose—a woman born to be his nemesis—provides the solution. With a single touch, he controls her. And through that control, he tricks her into triggering a curse that sends her family into one hundred years of enchanted sleep.

But Briony isn’t the soft princess he expected her to be. She’s just as sharp and cunning as he is, and when she traps him in a bargain to reverse her family’s curse, he has no choice but to join a tense alliance. He too stands to gain from her plans, for if they break the sleeping spell, his own family will return from their forced slumber.

To accomplish their goal, they must cooperate on one task: pair Briony with a husband who will make her parents proud. It should be easy. Thorne has connections while Briony has wit and beauty. What neither of them expects is the forbidden desire that burns in their darkest hearts…

ACOTAR meets Kingdom of the Wicked in this standalone fairytale retelling of Sleeping Beauty. If you like enemies-to-lovers romance where the villain gets the girl, you’ll love this swoon-worthy story in the Entangled with Fae series.

*NOTE this book is new adult featuring mature situations and some adult language. The romance is slow burn but leads to moderate steam.

A Dream So Wicked is a complete stand-alone novel set in the same world as The Fair Isle Trilogy. Journey back to Faerwyvae or begin your adventure for the first time with this enchanting tale. Each book in the Entangled with Fae series can be read on its own and in any order. Happily ever after guaranteed!

I'm still a bit behind in this series and even though you can read them in any order, I've never been one to do that! Lol.
