MOVIE Review--Vampire Academy

Finally saw Vampire Academy today! And I'm already worried about the movie franchise itself. After being in box offices for 1 week, there were nearly no movie times for me and my friend to go see it before she had to work.

But regardless, we did find a time. I have to say that while I did like it. I didn't love it like I had hoped.

When you have books to movie adaptations, the reader in you is always craving for a near likeness to the book. Granted, I haven't read the book in a few years...like since just before the fourth one released, so awhile...but I was able to recollect events and whatnot as the movie went along.

From what I gather, it stayed pretty true to the film. Nothing that stood out right away as added filler or whatnot.

Rehashing the storyline seems rather silly, since most of us know what the movie's about. I liked the cast rather well. They're all newbs to me, so at least their prior roles were affecting me wrong. Although, I did imagine the group a bit more different than how they appeared. But that too, is always expected with these kinds of movies.

I think I was even more swoony over Christian than Dimitri in this one. I can't be sure as to why. Guess it goes back to my imagining of the characters and then seeing who the actors are that portray them.

The action was good, the suspense was good! I still hated Mia like I did in that first book! And cheered Rose on after her scene at the dance! Go Rose! And yeah, the moment when Rose and Dimitri were under the love spell...sigh...all good things!

I guess what has me a little off course was that I was expecting utter and complete awe over the movie. And sadly, I just didn't get that. I still got great enjoyment from it! Seeing a book come to life before my eyes was still a great thing to see! And I will so totally be buying the DVD eventually as well once its out. So all in all, not a bad movie!

Next up...Divergent! (Next month, but the wait for Theo is sooooooooo worth it! I was sighing during the preview for it! ;)  )

Overall Rating 4/5 stars

  2. Glad you ended up enjoying this movie, Jess! I've heard so many negative opinions I practically put a cross on it and moved on. I actually haven't read the books so I guess I'm not all that interested in the movie either, but it's great to know that there are people out there who actually enjoyed it! :) Great, eloquent review!! Loved reading your thoughts!

  3. I saw a lot of mixed opinions about this one but I'm still curious I confess. It won"t be out until March here so I'll wait for it. I'm glad that despite some little things you had a great time.

  4. I'm glad you liked it overall, Jessica. I went to see it opening weekend and I liked it more than I thought I would after seeing the trailer. The music in the trailer kinda scared me - I am *ahem* older. ;) But...I thought they did a pretty good job casting. I felt they could have put more of the book into the film - it could have been longer. And the few things they changed didn't bother me too much. OH, I loved Natalie!! LOL I agree with you on the action/suspense. I wasn't bowled over by the movie, but I think I liked it more than I liked the first Twilight. And I'm on board for the rest of the series. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)
