Review--Drink Deep by Chloe Neill

Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can't tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city itself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal registration act, times haven't been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lay low for a bit, and let the mortals calm down.

That's when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch black-and things really start getting ugly.

Chicago's mayor insists it's nothing to worry about, but Merit knows only the darkest magic could have woven a spell powerful enough to change the very fabric of nature. She'll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who's behind this, and stop them before it's too late for vampires and humans alike.

SPOILERS FROM HARD BITTEN AHEAD, DO NOT READ IF NOT CAUGHT UP ON THE SERIES PLEASE!

HOLY COW! How on earth can I write a review for Chloe Neill's latest, Drink Deep? It was fantastic! I've read some really good reviews, yet I was still totally unprepared for how exciting this novel was going to be! And now I must review it myself without divulging in spoilers. Easier said than done, but trust me, I wouldn't dare spoil anything for readers!

So it's been 2 months since Hard Bitten--yet incredibly longer for us! And Merit is doing her best to move on after Ethan's death. It doesn't make it any easier that she's dreaming of him time and again. But her dreams are really the least of her problems. Chicago is in danger. Someone--or something--is causing chaos. The river turns black, the sky turns red...and it's only the beginning! Supernaturals are being blamed, particularly vampires.

Merit and Cadogan House are already in hot water with the GP from the previous events. And things are just not looking up for Merit and crew. The new mayor is being a total pain in the you know what, the former mayor is acting very suspicious, Mallory is over stressed about her sorceress exams...and things are getting utterly complicated with Jonah. With Ethan gone, Jonah seems to be the perfect match for Merit, yet Merit isn't ready to move on.

Despite assurances that the book wasn't too dreadful without Ethan there with Merit, I did have some doubts about that front. But I actually truly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. Merit goes through a lot of tough stuff with the city of Chicago and yet she still remains true to herself and her house.

The ending, as everyone seems to agree, isn't as killer as Hard Bitten's, yet it still leaves me wanting to read the next one, Biting Cold. And yet, it doesn't release til next August! Oh how I hate waiting...but wait I must! Because Biting Cold is definitely going to top Drink Deep! Each book in this series seems to top the previous one and I so can't wait to see how Chloe does it again next time!

Overall rating 5/5 stars

  2. I was very happy that Ethan came back but disappointed too; I expected a lot more action in his resurrection.
