Another one of my all time favorite Disney movies is The Little Mermaid! Possibly because it was one I watched on VHS a lot, and yes, the old VHS tape with the "controversial" cover on it! LOL!

  • Ariel is the daughter of Triton, who is the son of Poseidon. Poseidon is the brother of Zeus, who is the father of Hercules. That would mean Ariel and Hercules are related--GASP! lol
  • Ariel is the only princess to have a child. Her name is Melody--weird...Ariel had sex! And she was 16!! What was Disney thinking?! Yeah, yeah, different time period and whatnot, but still weird considering it released in 2000.
  • Sebastian almost had a British accent--so glad it was Jamaican. I mean can you imagine how "Under the Sea" would sound with a British accent?!
  • A deleted scene from The Little Mermaid revealed that in earlier concepts of the film, Ursula was meant to be Triton's sister and Ariel's aunt--would've been weird if it had! I mean...how would Ursula turn out half octopus with a bit of human and Triton was half fish? Was his mom an octopus? That would've created more questions for Disney nerds like me!

  1. You know, I've never actually seen this movie! Can you believe that?!! I really ought to remedy that. Maybe it was because my husband fancied her... yes, a cartoon character and he fancied her. Is that sad? I guess I was just jealous ;) he he he

  3. I loved this movie. Can not believe that it was released in 2000. Never understood the controversy over the cover though.

  4. Loved this movie growing up. I had a thing for her hair, to be honest. And the fact that she lived under the sea. I had no idea Triton was the son of Poseidon. O.O By the way, what is so controversial about that cover?

  5. I don't think that Ariel had to have been sixteen when she had Melody, did she? I mean, there's really no specific age given to Ariel in the second movie - or am I forgetting something? (It's been a long time since I watched that sequel - or the original, for that matter, but that one I practically had memorized once upon a time!).]

  6. Both of my daughters are HUGE Ariel fans :) For the record a British Sebastian would not have worked at all!

  7. I like The Little Mermaid but I didn't really watch it as a child for some reason. I did watch the tv show though. My Disney movie was definitely Beauty and the Beast. I had the whole thing memorized.

  8. OMG. I have the original cover too! Apparently the store where my mom bought it was offering exchanges, but my mom kept it because she thought it would be worth money one day.

It was definitely one of my favorite movies as a kid. I even got the special 25th anniversary ornament because it came out the year I was born, and I thought it was a cool connection.
