Review--Rise of Fire by Sophie Jordan

Luna and Fowler have escaped the kingdom of Relhok, but they haven’t escaped the darkness. When a battle against the dark dwellers mortally injures Fowler, Luna is faced with a choice: put their fate in the hands of mysterious strangers or risk losing Fowler forever.

Desperate to keep the one bright part of her life alive, Luna accepts the help of soldiers from a nearby kingdom. Lagonia’s castle offers reprieve from the dangerous outside world—until the king discovers both Fowler's and Luna’s true ties to Relhok and their influence over the throne.

Now pawns in each kingdom’s political game, Luna and Fowler are more determined than ever to escape and build the life they’ve been dreaming of. But their own pasts have a tight hold on their hearts and their destinies. Luna must embrace the darkness and fire within her before she loses not only Fowler, but the power she was destined to inherit.

It was no surprise to me that Sophie Jordan’s Rise of Fire was just as stunning and wonderful as the first book, Reign of Shadows! This duology tugged at all my heartstrings, I loved it! I loved it so purely and truly! It’s hard to describe precisely why I was so enchanted with this series, I guess it’s fairy tale elements played a part in it and the fact that it’s so different from the original fairy tales!

We pick up right where we left off, that’s one thing I loved about these books, the chapters flow together seamlessly. We start off with Luna on her way to rescue Fowler—who she now knows is Cullan’s son, the son of the man who murdered her parents and took everything from her—from a horde of dwellers who had taken him when he sacrificed himself to save her. Luna is not sure how she feels what with everything that was just dumped on her regarding Fowler’s identity, but she knows she can’t let him sacrifice himself for her, so here’s the part where the princess (because she is still a princess despite not having her kingdom) rescues the prince.

Naturally, Luna rescues Fowler, but he doesn’t come out unscathed. In fact, he’s been poisoned by the toxins dwellers have. Fate throws them a bone when emissaries from Lagonia stumble upon them and decide to bring them back with them so that Fowler can see their healer. But when they arrive at the castle, all doesn’t go as planned. Fowler’s identity is known right away when he’s there, even unconscious and Fowler just so happens to be betrothed to Maris, King Tebald’s daughter. Luna’s gender is revealed quickly as well, for it’s Prince Chasan who is able to tell that she is not a boy and she’s treated kindly at the castle as well, except for the fact that she’s not allowed to see Fowler for some reason.

Thus the game continues as more royalty intrigue and politics come into play. Things are happening all around Luna and she’s being given no choice in any of the matters either, which really churns my gourd! Not being allowed to make your own decisions really enrages me and I know that given the time period women weren’t really given choices in such matters, but when you’re dealing with the strong and fiery heroine like Luna, seeing her being reduced to so little really upset me.

Luna’s blindness is kept a secret as well, I don’t think King Tebald ever knew about it, at least it was never really mentioned. That Luna is able to sense things so accurately still amazes me! This girl is tough as nails and I love her to pieces! She reminds me a little of Rapunzel from Tangled, Rapunzel was a fighter too! She wasn’t invincible though and neither is Luna which just makes them both so lovable and relatable!

I’ll advise that the story might not mesh well for some readers. While I enjoyed it immensely and wasn’t bothered by the pacing there is a sort of stillness to it. Luna and Fowler spend the majority of the book in Tebald’s castle in Lagonia. They talk of escaping, they plan for it too, although Luna still wants to turn herself over to Fowler’s father so that the kill order will be ceased. Fowler must come up with a way to change her mind on that matter though.

I think one reason why I love this book so much was that it was very fairy tale like but not your ordinary fairy tale. As I mentioned, the princess saves the prince in this one and then they both save each other. Luna may be blind but she is far from helpless, this girl is brave, strong, and determined and I loved that about her. Then you have Fowler who is as equally brave and willing to do anything to protect Luna and yet, he’s not treating her as helpless, his need to protect her comes from love and that just makes it all the more swoonworthy! Chasan’s character was a surprise for me! When he first came onto the page, I hated him immediately. He was a pretentious prince who thought all women should fawn over him and whatnot. He wanted Luna for himself and was even anticipating a marriage with her and threw it in Fowler’s face constantly. It wasn’t until the last 1/3 of the novel or so that that started to change, in baby steps, mind you.

The conclusion to this book was soooo freaking amazing! It was shocking as well, there was a huge happening that proved to play a critical role. Though I do still have some mild confusion as to some of the hows and whys before it came into play, but it’s nothing that really kept me from turning those pages as fast as I could! The ending leaves no stone unturned, just as I started wondering about a few loose-ends, all those points were addressed promptly. It was a perfect kind of fairy tale ending…minus the zombie like dwellers and larger than life bats!

Truly, the only complaint I have, once again, is that this book wasn’t long enough! I was so engrossed with the story and eating up the pages that when it came time for The End, I wasn’t ready for goodbyes just yet, but they were made! This is the perfect duology for fans of fairy tales! It was a story that kept me enticed the whole way through. I am literally at a loss for words here as I try to emulate my feelings over this book, it’s left me speechless which should tell you a lot by that alone!

Random Thursday

Time to, once again, return to That's a Fact Jack: A Collection of Utterly Useless Information [Updated] by Harry Bright and Jakob Anser! This book is a lot of fun because this is the epitome of randomness!

"Of the four fundamental forces--gravity, electromagnetism, weak nuclear force, and strong nuclear force--gravity it by far the weakest."

Wouldn't have guessed that with "weak nuclear force"!

"The surface of the light side of the Moon is covered in tiny concave chips. Light hitting these chips from any direction is fully reflected outward. The same principle has been applied to the reflective paint used on road signs: the paint itself contains concave chips reminiscent of moondust."

For some reason, I never gave much thought to the "light side of the moon"!

Possibility of life on Saturn? Awesome!

Cool! I always liked Saturn when it came to the planets. Guessing it was its rings! Lol!

Mount TBR Reading Challenge: 1st Quarterly Check-In Post

Time to check in on my Mount TBR Reading Challenge! I can't believe we're already done with the first quarter! That's insane!

1. Tell us how many miles you've made it up your mountain (# of books read).  If you're really ambitious, you can do some intricate math and figure out how the number of books you've read correlates to actual miles up Pike's Peak, Mt. Ararat, etc. And feel free to tell us about any particularly exciting adventures you've had along the way.

So for this challenge, I pledged to read at least 48 books from my TBR pile! In the past 3 months I have managed to read 13 (though as of today there's another two to be added plus, a third by tomorrow!)!

2. Complete ONE (or more if you like) of the following:

A. Post a picture of your favorite cover so far.

From the first three months, I choose Feversong by Karen Marie Moning! The endpages are particularly gorgeous!

B. Who has been your favorite character so far? And tell us why, if you like.

I would say Tink from Jennifer L. Armentrout's Wicked trilogy! Omg, Tink was hilarious and also a devoted friend! Definitely someone to have your back even though he's a brownie aka, like 5 inches tall (or something like that!)!

C. Have any of the books you read surprised you--if so, in what way (not as good as anticipated? unexpected ending? Best thing you've read ever? Etc.)

Well, I really enjoyed how A Court of Wings and Ruin ended! It was a beautiful ending to Feyre's story, though I am super eager to see where the series will go with other characters' tales!

The Wicked trilogy also ended in a way that left me wanting more, but sadly that series is truly done. While things were wrapped up for the most part, I felt like there was still a few things left unsaid, particularly about some of the other characters' happy endings--because I refuse to believe otherwise!

D. Title Scrabble: See if you can spell a word using the first letter of the first word in the titles of some/all of the books you have read so far. Feel free to consider "A," "An," or "The" as the first word or not as it helps you with your word hunt.

Okay...I'll admit that I am using a word scrambler to help me out here since I had quite a few titles over the past three months! I couldn't use all the letters because I apparently read too many books the first quarter!

Since the majority of my books were awesome...or fabulous, I am using the word FABBEST, a variation of fab!

Feversong by Karen Marie Moning
A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas
Burned by Karen Marie Moning
Brave by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Etched in Bone by Anne Bishop
Sense of Deception by Victoria Laurie
Torn by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Review--Reign of Shadows by Sophie Jordan

Seventeen years ago, an eclipse cloaked the kingdom of Relhok in perpetual darkness. In the chaos, an evil chancellor murdered the king and queen and seized their throne. Luna, Relhok’s lost princess, has been hiding in a tower ever since. Luna’s survival depends on the world believing she is dead.

But that doesn’t stop Luna from wanting more. When she meets Fowler, a mysterious archer braving the woods outside her tower, Luna is drawn to him despite the risk. When the tower is attacked, Luna and Fowler escape together. But this world of darkness is more treacherous than Luna ever realized.

With every threat stacked against them, Luna and Fowler find solace in each other. But with secrets still unspoken between them, falling in love might be their most dangerous journey yet.

I finally picked up Sophie Jordan’s Reign of Shadows and wow…it was freaking amazing!! I had heard that she wrote this fantasy that was somewhat of a blend of Rapunzel, girl grows up in a tower all her life, never seeing the outside world. Well, in this story, Sophie turns it all around and inside out. The princess indeed grows up in a tower, but it was for her protection, amid a world filled with darkness and flesh eating monsters…oh yes, this is not your average fairy tale!

Luna is a princess that grew up in a tower after her family was murdered just after her birth. The world was cast into darkness by an eclipse that never left and for the past seventeen years, there has only ever been darkness and monsters. Not only are there these larger than life bats that fly about, but there are also creatures known as dwellers, they are zombie-like monsters that basically eat you alive. This world is a dark and scary one where survival is only fit for the strongest and fastest.

Luna has lived with family servants her entire life, she’s a blind princess, so it makes the world even more dangerous for her. But she is no helpless feeble princess, in fact she’s quite fierce and while she may lack sight her other senses have sharped and she’s able to hear things coming and perceive when obstacles are in her path. She’s not a damsel in distress despite her condition, she’s strong and fierce and totally able to save herself…most of the time, naturally. She’s freaking amazing! I love this girl!

When she helps to rescue a trio of ragtag teenagers traversing the dangerous lands around her home, she brings them in when one was severely injured wanting to help, and of course being curious about newcomers. But things go terribly awry when the new king’s soldiers find her tower that has remained hidden all these years. Before her very eyes the young girl among the rescued is slaughtered, soon her guardians realize it would be best for Luna to be sent far away from her home in order to protect her. Fowler, the third and uninured party of the rescued is to guide her.

Fowler is a boy of many secrets and little words. I began to suspect who his character was to Luna not too far into the story. Plus I think a few reviews alluded to it as well, but I was never sure of my suspicions until the latter half of the story. He comes off as cold and stingy in the beginning, but the more time he spends with Luna, he begins to soften. Naturally, he has a history behind his coldness that gets revealed and things become more understood in regards to his character.

This world is dangerous to everyone, blind or not. The journey Fowler and Luna are set on will take months, but that doesn’t account for all the obstacles they will have to overcome on this journey. There are many enemies out there and not all of them are monsters.

This book was soooo good! I love a good fairy tale retelling and while this isn’t a straight up retelling of Rapunzel, the fairy tale clearly provided some inspiration for Sophie’s story here. It was remarkable and truly what I love most about fairy tale retellings or inspired by fairy tale stories! There’s just enough similarities there to make for a familiar story, yet knowing that there’s a whole load of new possibilities to come. It’s hard for me to describe precisely, obviously, but I feel like there are times where I enjoy the “inspired by” stories a little more than straight up retellings, because with the former, you truly never know where the story will go!

This story was pretty fast paced as Fowler and Luna are struggling to get past the many dangers and get to a city they are told is the “safest” place to be when in a world that is just dangerous to be in anywhere. I particularly liked how things were described when Luna was at the helm of the storytelling, as the story is divvied up between her and Fowler. It’s remarkable how much she was able to perceive without being able to see it. And Fowler grew to be more patient and kind with Luna. His describing what colors are was so heartfelt, I was swooning far earlier than anticipated!

This was just the most absolute perfect blend of fairy tales, fantasy, action, adventure, chills and thrills, romance…seriously I cannot get over how amazing this book is! If I were to have a complaint it would be that it wasn’t long enough! Lol! And omg, am I glad I waited to read this one with the second/final one because that ending…I had heard it was cliffhanger worthy but omg that was one of the worst kinds of cliffhangers. I am flashing back to the worst cliffhangers of all time because this one definitely fits the bill in that area, hence why I will not cut this review short…or somewhat short as I stare up at all those paragraphs!

Reign of Shadows was truly amazing! It’s the best kind of fantasy read one could read especially if you favor the fairy tales and a sweeping, slow-burning romance! Pure perfection! I don’t care what anyone else says! Lol!

Review--Haven by Mary Lindsey

We all hold a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed.

Rain Ryland has never belonged anywhere, He’s used to people judging him for his rough background, his intimidating size, and now, his orphan status. He’s always been on the outside, looking in, and he’s fine with that. Until he moves to New Wurzburg and meets Friederike Burkhart.

Freddie isn’t like normal teen girls, though. And someone wants her dead for it. Freddie warns he’d better stay far away if he wants to stay alive, but Rain’s never been good at running from trouble. For the first time, Rain has something worth fighting for, worth living for. Worth dying for.

Somewhere over the years, I became fascinated with werewolf books! Don’t get me wrong, my first love will always be vampires, but I love a good werewolf book as well! I had heard exceptional things about Mary Lindsey’s Haven, so I knew it would be one I had to read for its sheer awesomeness!

Rain Ryland moves in with his aunt after his mother died, leaving him an orphan. He’s had a tough go of things his whole life practically, living in a shelter, living on the streets…so when he moves in with his aunt, he really was expecting much of anything to happen for the remaining months until he turns eighteen. But New Wurzburg, the quiet little town that is now home, is about to become a whole lot more interesting when he collides with Friederike Burkhart.

Freddie isn’t like normal girls, in fact, she’s so far removed from normal, it’s what draws Rain to her in the first place. There’s an air of mystery surrounding Freddie though as you may have already guessed it, Freddie’s secret is that she’s a werewolf, and they are plenty of them in town! What was unexpected was the inclusion of witches known as Weavers. In fact, there’s a very detailed history between the Weavers and the werewolves, also known as Watchers. The Watchers basically act as protectors for the Weavers when they are “weaving” their magic. Weaving magic leaves them vulnerable, so the Watchers, watch out for them.

Freddie is slated to be alpha as her late father was the alpha of the pack before his untimely murder. Freddie hasn’t been the same since it happened and since his aunt just happens to work at the sheriff’s office, Rain is determined to find out what happened. He’s not going all out on trying to solve the murder, but he’s doing everything possible to find a lead or something that might have been overlooked by the police who have written it up as an accidental death.

This was a rather different take on the werewolf love story! Or really, any paranormal love story, for time and again, I am so used to seeing the male paranormal type and the human female type falling in love and overcoming obstacles! Truly, (in regards of YA) I think the last time I read a book where the girl was the werewolf falling in love with a human boy was Blood and Chocolate, which is still one of my all-time favorite reads! So Mary’s book was like a breath of fresh air in that area!

The mystery behind Freddie’s dad’s murder was intriguing, as were the politics at play concerning the Watchers and Weavers. There is definitely a lot to be learned here and I think it was somewhere in the middle of trying to learn about the Watcher/Weaver relationship that things got a little muddy. It was hard to truly grasp the reasons behind the adversity. I think that’s where my biggest problem laid, if I can’t really get an idea of their past relationship, understanding the present time one isn’t going to happen without difficulties. Though I was able to get the general idea of it all, so I wasn’t totally lost within the story.

The romance between Rain and Freddie wasn’t what you expect either and I loved that! Yes, when boy meets girl, we expect them to fall in love and have so many problems they’d have to overcome to be together. But here, Rain will learn his first hurdle will actually be to get Freddie to like him! It’s not necessarily a love-hate relationship, but Freddie has been known to keep her guard up and it’s clear that she tries to protect Rain from her world…another trope we often see in these paranormal/human relationships. Their relationship was pretty intense though in some ways and I honestly couldn’t get enough of these two.

The ending was pretty shocking! There was more at play than a simple murder mystery and the results were earth shattering! I wasn’t expecting for several things to happen, at least not in the first book, as there is a second one planned! Whether that one will be a direct sequel or more of a companion has yet to be revealed. I almost want to root for a companion sort of sequel because I felt very content with where Mary left things. It was very complete and settled with the knowledge that a future remains…for some that is! Mary definitely put a whole new spin on werewolves for me and I must say I quite enjoyed it and cannot wait for more! I am already looking into her backlist!

This week's topic is: Characters I Started Out Hating but Ended Up Liking/Loving in the End!**

**as you might notice this isn't the posted topic. I had to twist it a bit because honestly if I am not liking a book, it's usually due to the pacing, plot, or characters. Basically, if I didn't like the book overall, I don't really like the characters as much either. Hence my twisting this topic to talk about characters I started out disliking but ended up liking in the end!
*in no particular order

10. THE DARKLING--yeah, I didn't want to like this guy. I mean, he's the villain! A very complicated villain and yeah, in the end I really liked him and felt for the guy!
9. WARNER--another guy I didn't want to like. He still kept Juliette a prisoner of sorts after she was let out of prison. But then I read his novella and I started to understand him a bit, maybe even sympathize for him. But he had a lot of work to do before I would like him...but yeah, I was liking him before the end of book 2!
8. THE COMMANDER--another character I didn't want to like. He was against all things magical, and I can understand that. But he just had that air to him that made you want to hate him...but then yeah, as the series rolled along, I started to like him in a friendly sort of way!

7. FABIAN--he wasn't necessarily villainous but I found him rude and arrogant. Though as the story moved along, he started to grow on me! Lol!
6. SETH--I'm only acknowledging Seth's character as it was in the Covenant series as I still need to read the new one (planning to soon!)! But yeah, I didn't really like him too much. I might have gone back and forth with my hating and liking and yeah, by the end, I was back to sorta liking him. I just didn't like the decisions and choices he made over the course of the series. Plus I was pretty much Team Aiden from the getgo and he was standing in the way of that! Lol!
5. DAEMON--yeah, Daemon wasn't a favorite in the beginning. Let's face it, he was an ass. Granted I was in love with him before the end of book 1, but it definitely wasn't love at first sight!

4. JARED--Jared was another character I didn't care for right away. In the beginning, he was a bit of an ass as well! He was somewhat of a player and that just didn't bode well with me. He wasn't very nice to Allie in the beginning either. But again, as this world series moved along, he grew on me and naturally when his trilogy came up I loved the guy!
3. GARRETT--here's the thing, I love bad guys turned good guys, but I usually don't like them when they are the bad guy. Garrett, let's face it, was a "bad guy" in the start of Talon. But then as he got to know Ember, he started changing his views and sure enough he turns good guy and wins my heart! Lol!
2. MALFOY--let's ignore the movies for a moment here. I didn't want to like Malfoy. He was pretentious, selfish, ignorant...the list goes on! And it probably really wasn't until the last book or two of the series that my dislike of him began to fade and by the series finale I really liked the guy!

1. AIDAN--though technically he was an AI and not a real person character, AIDAN wasn't that great of a "guy". He easily kills people for the "greater good". What's to like about that? But then once again, as the series moved along it starts to change. AIDAN begins to understand human tendencies a little better and let's face it, I pretty much liked the guy? thing? by the end of Illuminae!

Let's Discuss: The Half Star Rating

I saw on another discussion post the topic of half stars and the merits of using them or not. As you all know, I use them semi-frequently too!

The Half Star Rating

We all know Goodreads and Amazon deplore the half star rating. Even without it, I still can't stand their rating system! That a 1 star is I HATED IT! A 2 star is I DIDN'T LIKE IT...which okay, isn't too bad, but the I HATE IT? That bugs me. Yes, we won't like every book we read, but to say HATE? Hate is such a strong word! That's why my 1 star rating is considered IT WASN'T FOR ME. Other people might like it, they might even LOVE it. To say I hated it, is just too much.

But anyway, moving on. I prefer using the half star rating rather than rounding up or down. Rounding is just so...so, blah. Of course, I have to do such things on Goodreads and Amazon when adding my reviews. Sometimes the half star is warranted, usually because it falls between me REALLY liking a book and just liking it! And usually, there's more to it, that it's nearly perfect or nearly a 4 star read but with a few hangups, a half star becomes necessary! Heck, you all know that I occasionally dish out a .75 or even a .95 add on to my whole number...because sometimes a read is EVEN BETTER than a .5 add on!

It does make for complex ratings I'll give you that. But then, I mean how much trouble could it be for Amazon and Goodreads to add on the half star ratings? We already see that books get an awkward overall rating, how does that factor in? Will it really be harder to factor in half stars? I mean truly, I don't know the answer to that because I am so not a techie who would have to configure whatever algorithm to have the overall rating change based on readers' ratings. It's weird.

Needless to say that I am a fan of the half star rating. I am not afraid to use it! Though being forced to round up or down on other review sites does tend to get annoying, but oh well!

What about you guys? Do you use half star ratings? Why or why not?

ARC Review--Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody

Welcome to the City of Sin, where casino families reign, gangs infest the streets…and secrets hide in every shadow.

Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school—and her reputation—behind to follow her mother’s trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.

Frightened and alone, her only lead is a name: Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected—he’s a street lord and a con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn't have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne's offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems.

Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos, illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi's enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city…

And she’ll need to play.

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.

There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding Amanda Foody’s newest release, Ace of Shades! I was more than eager to read it once I got my hands on a copy as I had heard good things about her debut which I still need to read. This book was far different from what I was expecting, it was intriguing and full of mystery. Though some of the world politics were a little complicated and adding in magic and abilities it makes things a little harder to grasp as it wasn’t based on things I was familiar with. But other than those murky waters I found I quite enjoyed this one!

Enne has come to New Reynes in order to find her mother who has been missing for some months now. She was left with a letter that says where she went and if she hadn’t returned to go to New Reynes and find a man named Levi, who would, hopefully, help Enne find her. When Enne does all this, she finds that New Reynes is a most dangerous place indeed. Trusting Levi to help her find her mother will be a great leap of faith.

Levi is the leader of The Irons, a local gang that works with gambling and whatnot. Though Levi is in a bit of a pickle himself as a deal to earn big money that his boss brought him in on is starting to go sour. He owes a lot of money to another man named Sedric Torren who runs his own casino and is notorious for getting what is owed to him. Basically, don’t cross Sedric, like Levi is about to. He has ten days to earn the money he needs to pay him back and helping Enne find her lost mother may just be the key to getting that money.

As I said, this world was a little more complex that I had anticipated. It was part fantasy, part steampunk almost what with the different kind of technology they used. I wouldn’t say it’s steampunk exactly, because steam and machines weren’t really a part of it, but that’s the feel I got from it and is the best word I could think of to describe it. Adding in the fact everyone is gifted with two kinds of abilities, you have the makings for a world not like our own.

There was a good deal of mystery to this one; what with trying to find Enne’s mother and then of course, another mystery pops up. One that wasn’t expected, though I admit I started making my own suspicions over things. The end results are inconclusive you could say, as while we did learn some things, the ending to this one leaves things a little unsettled, yet I wouldn’t say it was really much a of a cliffhanger, more like laying the foundation to what will likely build into an even bigger puzzle!

There was a bit of possible romance happening, but I was astonished to see that not much happens in that area. But I would think when the next book comes around we might finally get to see something between Enne and Levi!

Overall this book is leaving me feeling a bit puzzled over things and what happened, the hows and the whys…what will likely happen in the future to come. I am not sure of any of it. It was still a really decent read but I feel like while I am reading I shouldn’t be questioning things about how the world works. And yet, I found I never really quite grasped what goes on in this place. And when I can’t understand how things work, I can’t quite get into the story. Here, I did have a general understanding, but I’m all about the details. So while I understood enough, I still found that I only sort of liked this book. There were times when I was really enjoying myself, and perhaps I will have a great appreciation for things come the second book. I still liked this book, but I can’t say it was an immediate favorite. I definitely plan to check out the rest of this series and hopefully Amanda’s first book as well, so I’m not done yet!
