Review--A Vow So Bold and Deadly by Brigid Kemmerer

Face your fears, fight the battle.

Emberfall is crumbling fast, torn between those who believe Rhen is the rightful prince and those who are eager to begin a new era under Grey, the true heir. Grey has agreed to wait two months before attacking Emberfall, and in that time, Rhen has turned away from everyone—even Harper, as she desperately tries to help him find a path to peace.

Fight the battle, save the kingdom.

Meanwhile, Lia Mara struggles to rule Syhl Shallow with a gentler hand than her mother. But after enjoying decades of peace once magic was driven out of their lands, some of her subjects are angry Lia Mara has an enchanted prince and a magical scraver by her side. As Grey's deadline draws nearer, Lia Mara questions if she can be the queen her country needs.

As the two kingdoms come closer to conflict, loyalties are tested, love is threatened, and a dangerous enemy returns, in this stunning conclusion to bestselling author Brigid Kemmerer’s Cursebreaker series.

I finally, finally finished Brigid Kemmerer’s conclusion to the Cursebreakers trilogy, A Vow So Bold and Deadly, and it was a most shocking ending indeed! I had seen many reactions and I guess I misinterpreted them as I was expecting something horrific and instead, I was shocked by being pleasantly surprised by the outcome!

Things are ultimately intense over the kingdoms of Emberfall and Syhl Shallow. Harper and Rhen are at odds, Lilith continues to torment Rhen in secret while everyone is preparing for war between the two kingdoms. Grey is training the soldiers of Lia Mara’s kingdom to get them ready, while also continuing to learn to use his own magic. Meanwhile, Lia Mara is dealing with multiple assassination attempts and trying to maintain her fragile grasp on her kingdom.

Rhen is still trying to build up his army as he prepares to battle his brother. Harper is trying to play middle man and get the two brothers to reconcile, but it’s easier said than done. Especially since Lilith continues to whisper horrible things in Rhen’s ear and torture him, no less.

I feel like the action wasn’t as intense in this book as in previous ones. There’s still a great deal of tension though with the threat of war between brothers going about. It’s a tension that is decidedly thick and makes you continue to turn the pages to see which brother will be king.

The story was also heartbreaking in some ways. We see how both brothers struggle with the other and things that they did in the past. It was sad to see them struggle to communicate with one another.

Romance was had on both sides in spurts  each romance was as beautifully written as they were in the first two books. I loved how each couple wasn’t perfect. Everyone seems to have their weaknesses and yet they all manage to work through them.

The ending was pretty spectacular too! It was one where things get resolved to a point of satisfaction, but the bow is a little lopsided with a few teeny loose ends, but they are ones where you pretty much know that certain characters will be going on with their lives with new goals in mind!

A Vow So Bold and Deadly was the best kind of series ending! You know that these characters will be living on with new adventures, we just might not get to know what they are but it’s nice knowing that the stories will continue on! If you’re a fantasy fan with a little touch of a la The Beauty and the Beast, this is one series you won’t want to miss!
