Review--Full Blooded by Amanda Carlson

Born the only female in an all male race, Jessica McClain isn’t just different—she’s feared.

After living under the radar for the last twenty-six years, Jessica is thrust unexpectedly into her first change, a full ten years late. She wakes up and finds she’s in the middle of a storm. Now that she’s become the only female full-blooded werewolf in town, the supernatural world is already clamoring to take a bite out of her and her new Pack must rise up and protect her.

But not everyone is on board. The werewolf Rights of Laws is missing text and the superstitious werewolves think that Jessica means an end to their race. It doesn’t help when Jessica begins to realize she’s more. She can change partway and hold her form, and speak directly to her wolf. But the biggest complication by far is that her alpha father can't control her like he can the rest of his wolves.

When a mercenary who’s been hired by the vampires shows up to extract information about the newly turned werewolf only days after her change, they find themselves smack in the middle of a war and there's no choice but to run together. When it’s up to Jessica to negotiate her release against her father’s direct orders, she chooses to take an offer for help instead. In exchange, Jessica must now swear an oath she may end up repaying with her life.

Wow! Amanda Carlson's Full Blooded was a pretty quick read for me! Started it Wednesday and managed to get it done today! It is totally a thrill ride!

Jessica--love that name!--was born to a werewolf family, yet is human. But because she is the daughter of a werewolf it brings up the Cain prophecy, that she will be the cause of the destruction of her own kind. So naturally, the Pack wants her dead. They have wanted it since she was born. So Jessica left the Pack household, took a little finagling but she created a new identity for herself and set herself up to have a new life. Only a select few know of her whereabouts, this includes her father, his second, her twin brother and another dear friend of the Pack.

With Jessica is Nick, a werefox, the two have set up their own PI business with a witch, Marcy. We don't get to see much of Marcy so I don't know if she will be a regular character. But alas, moving on! Right away Jessica transforms into a werewolf. She is 26, well past puberty, the time when a wolf usually changes for the first time. So it causes a bit of a panic. Her brother and father already know the instant it happens since the wolves have a mind connection going on. Jessica has had it with her twin brother Tyler, but they lost it sometime during his first change. It's back now that she finds herself changing.

They want to keep Jessica's changing a secret from the Pack, but it is proving less likely to remain so. There are others out there that want a piece of the only female werewolf in existence. We don't know why Jessica is such a hot item, but it does keep the danger and action up to full!

Rourke is our sexy male lead! We don't know too much about him. He does seem to hold a place in the supe community, but Jessica is going to have her hands full of him before she knows it. He comes to her as a "client" for her PI business, but when their meeting gets bombarded with rival wolf Packs, Jessica isn't sure she can trust him. Until her father orders Rourke to take her away to some place safe. Then she has no choice but to have a reluctant trust for him.

There is still a lot of unknown going on in this book. Being the first book in the series, that doesn't surprise me. We get more questions than answers. And just when we think things may wrap up somewhat neatly but not neatly, we are overcome with more problems and questions. It wasn't annoyingly so either, Amanda is really building up her readers to what is sure to be an awesome series--or trilogy as I thought I heard.

Jessica is a totally kick ass heroine! She is truly unique as well, her becoming a wolf is a lot more than it seems. Her brother Tyler is pretty groovy too! Yes I said groovy! He is devoted to both his father/Pack and his sister, since the two were kept separate for most of their lives.

Basically all I can say is the characters are awesome! Especially Rourke! He is seriously a sexy beast! And we don't 100% know what he is exactly. But his and Jessica's lives have been entangled indefinitely.

There was a bit of a cliffhanger at the end which is infuriating, because it is a cliffhanger! I have a love-hate relationship with those little do-diddities. But overall this is a fantastical read and fits beautifully into the UF world! This is definitely a series I will be holding on to!

  1. Great review! I've been looking forward to your opinion on this one. I was a bit on the fence about it, werewolves are not usually my thing. But this story sounds unique and I love kick ass heroines and mysterious male characters (I love it when it's not obvious from the start WHAT he is, so thumbs up for that!), so I'll give it a try asap.
Oh, and I'm so there with you on the cliffhanger thing! *head desk*
