Discussion Challenge: The Worst Movie Based on a Book

Let's try another discussion! Still out of ideas, probably because I'm scattered brained at the best of times and can't think of something to ramble about for a length of time! LOL! So I hit the list of suggestions and saw one that I could totally do! But naturally, it's not on the positive side...

The Worst Movie Based on a Book

Granted, this could be argued all day over many, may movies. But for me the worst movie I ever saw that was based on a book was Blood & Chocolate. Now I might have talked about this one before, but one of my most favorite books to read (and re-read) as a teen was Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause! A brief rundown on what the book was about: teenage werewolf Vivian falls in love with a human boy. Totally against the rules. She's been promised/claimed by another werewolf. Problems and issues arise, and then there are the MURDERS happening! People seem to be dying by wolf attacks! I won't spoil the rest, but it was basically one of the best books I've ever read! Ends in the best and totally surprising way! It gave me all the feels as a teen.

Then there was the movie. Where to begin? Well, it was about a teenage werewolf Vivian who falls in love with a human boy. Totally against the rules. And that's where the similarities end. There are no murders. She's not promised or claimed to by another. There's no freaking mystery. There's hardly any conflict other than the "you can't be in love with a human!" debacle.

Granted it wasn't that bad of a movie. As long as you don't think of this being a movie based off of a book. Because besides the the fact that Vivian is a werewolf and falls in love with a human boy, nothing is the same! I mean, granted the writers "tried". They use some of the same character names, instead of having Rafe as her ex-boyfriend, he's her cousin...yeah. That one bugged me. I mean come on, if we're changing things up so entirely, at least pick new names. I think I could've accepted it better that way. I tried to dissociate the amazing book from this crummy book adaption film. Otherwise, it wasn't that bad. It just wasn't the real Blood and Chocolate. They should've named the movie Chocolate & Blood. Yes, it doesn't have the same ring to it, but it would let readers know that though this movie SEEMS like it's based off the book, it's really, really not. Except in the most basic and general sense.

Yeah...I will always have issues with this movie in some ways. But at the same time, I find that I can't quite get rid of my copy yet. It's weird.

But I totally totally recommend the book if you haven't read it yet! It's really, really early Paranormal YA and I must say, it's beautiful! It was definitely ahead of its time because it's also rather mature too! And it was published in 1999 folks!! I had to have read it some handful of years after that. I want to say in 2001 or 2002? It was right when I started my I NEED TO READ MORE "VAMPIRE" BOOKS...or SOMETHING NOT NORMAL-Y! Lol. It was before I knew what to call the paranormal books, trust me, it didn't take much longer for me to say I want more Paranormal YA books and have people look at me like, "what are you talking about?". I too was apparently ahead of my time in the reading world! LOL!

  1. I agree with you! I read this book in the early 2000's and I love it to pieces! Then I watched the movie some years later and it made me go back and read the book... I agree that the movie could have been so much better. I've only seen the movie once and never thought to watch it again while the book is wonderful.

  2. I fell in love with the book when one of my friends and I kept stealing it from each other while "borrowing" it from a completely random person (who we vaguely knew but weren't really great friends with at the time). I remember it being a great book, but years later (after I had thoroughly forgotten everything about the book) I watched the movie and couldn't fathom why I had loved the book so much. I guess now I know why!

  3. I'm completely unfamiliar with both book and movie. I do know what you mean though - when the movie in and of itself isn't bad, but it matches the book so poorly that you barely recognize them as the same. So disappointing :(

  4. I didn't read or watch this movie. Hmmm.... you are a head of your time and I am behind of mine. :D

  5. I haven't read this or seen the movie. Usually I prefer to read the book then go and see the movie. Most of the time, with the exception of Harry Potter, I think the book is best.
