ARC Review--Goddess Interrupted by Aimee Carter

Kate Winters has won immortality.

But if she wants a life in the Underworld with Henry, she’ll have to fight for it.

Becoming immortal wasn’t supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she’s as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he’s becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate’s coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.

As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.

Henry’s first wife, Persephone.

WOW. Just freaking WOW! Goddess Interrupted was freaking awesome! Aimee Carter is incredible! She wrote her amazing debut The Goddess Test, and I was so wondering how she was going to be able to compete with that, but she freaking did it!

So Kate's had an awesome summer in Greece with James and come fall Kate's looking forward to seeing Henry again. Only she doesn't receive the warm welcome she was hoping for. In fact, she comes back in the thick of things. Calliope is still raving mad and is concocting her evil plan to get revenge, yet again. But there are still plans for Kate's induction ceremony to actually being a goddess. Naturally those plans are interrupted. Hence the title!

What it boils down to is that Kate, James and Ava must find the one person who will be able to save Henry and the others for Calliope has them in her trap, wanting to set free to Cronus, the Titan who is imprisoned by the Gods and Goddesses. And naturally we know who that one person is...Persephone. Henry's first wife and technically Kate's sister.

Traveling through the Underworld, encountering many versions of the dead's afterlives, it takes awhile to get to Persephone. The book is sort of a "journey" book, in that that's what takes place, but it's around half way that they get to Persephone and then must convince her to come help.

The pacing when you step back and look at it, might seem a little slow. Yet I enjoyed it. It was true storytelling. It's an art, to take a modern semi-paranormal like novel and make it feel like a story. Regardless, I found this to be a very enjoyable story. There's plenty of action and danger! There's intense friction between Kate and Henry. They love each other, yet they can't seem to communicate at all. Henry is cold and distant and when he sees Persephone again, Kate feels even more alone.

There are monumental changes and progress happening with them. It was hard for me to pick a side, I could see both of their points even though it was Kate's p.o.v. And the ending! OMG, I thought the ending last time was tough since things were getting to the HEA, then Kate leaves for the summer. This ending, puts that one to shame, to SHAME! Yes, it's a cliffhanger. An EVIL EVIL cliffhanger!!

I don't want that to sound negative, but this cliffhanger is the definition of cliffhangers. It totally leaves you hanging in the worst way! And it's going to be an uber long time to wait for the next one.

I don't want to give anything away, and even talking about character developments might lead to a spoiler. But the characters do grow. We see more of them and their Godly alter egos. Ava and James in particular. And of course Henry.

The book had everything one could expect from one that speaks of characters on a mission. And Kate is on a mission. And more importantly she will have to make the decision as to whether she truly belongs with Henry or not.

Overall rating 5/5 stars

  2. Great review. I really liked Goddess, Interrupted too! I've read some complaints about it being slow paced too, but I think that was part of the journey for Kate and the cliffhanger was EVIL! I enjoyed seeing Kate and Persephone's beginnings of a relationship and the complexity to Persephone's characters.
