Review--Resistance by Jenna Black

Nate Hayes is a Replica.

The real Nate was viciously murdered, but thanks to Paxco’s groundbreaking human replication technology, a duplicate was created that holds all of the personality and the memories of the original. Or...almost all. Nate’s backup didn't extend to the days preceding his murder, leaving him searching for answers about who would kill him, and why. Now, after weeks spent attempting to solve his own murder with the help of his best friend and betrothed, Nadia Lake, Nate has found the answers he was seeking...and he doesn’t like what he’s discovered.

The original Nate was killed because he knew a secret that could change everything. Thanks to Nadia’s quick thinking, the two of them hold the cards now—or think they do.

Unfortunately, neither of them fully understands just how deep the conspiracy runs.

Having previously read Jenna Black's Replica as an ARC, I thought I would have a hard time getting back into the swing of things with Resistance, but luckily, Jenna has some helpful summaries along the way, that I recalled the gist of things.

We pretty much pick up where we left off, and if you read Replica, you know what an epic ending we had there! Nate and Nadia believe that they have beaten Chairman Hayes and that the replica process has been destroyed. They have evidence against Hayes that should he misstep, they would release the tapes that indicate his crimes. But life is not moving smoothly for Nadia or Nate for that matter.

Nadia's parents have decided to send her to a "retreat" in order to get away from it all...and the media. There are rumors floating around and none of them are good. It is in Nadia's best interests to leave the public limelight, but she is against it. She doesn't want to be locked away, for this spa, is nothing more than a fancy prison.

Nadia's life is about to get even more difficult for Nate's father is calling off their unofficial engagement and giving Nate a new fiancee. This complicates things for Nate as well, for Nadia was his best friend and who knew about his boyfriend and accepted him for who he was. Nadia was willing to live a sham of a marriage with him, but a new girl? Not so much. Plus, Agnes is a plain, meek sort of girl and Nate wants nothing to do with her. He treats her poorly, in an attempt to get her to break off their engagement.

This was a fairly fast-paced read and I was eating up the pages, desperate to see how things turned out. And wow! Resistance was truly a fantastic read! Generally, I'm not one who enjoys the sci-fi type things, but yet, this series doesn't take it to the point where it's overly complicated and hard to understand. In fact, it's quite thrilling and exciting! Replicating a human mind and putting into a clone, so to speak, so that way even if a loved one dies, he can just come back! It's truly a unique and engaging storyline and I am so very, very eager to see how this one ends!

As far as romance goes, I was surprised with what Jenna did this time! I continue to sympathize for Nadia. She was putting herself into a loveless marriage while Nate would continue to see Kurt in secret, but where does that leave Nadia? But then she meets Dante who turns out to be a spy for the resistance movement. And there were definite sparks flying between them last time! And let's just say, that those sparks turn into fireworks this go around!! Although, I can't help but have hostile feelings towards Nate, who doesn't like Nadia with Dante. He does his best to accept it, but he feels like she should be with someone else. I know he cares for her as his friend, but I really wish he would be more happy for her that she found someone, for all this time he has had Kurt. So yeah, I had me some hate Nate time, but then he would go and do something sincere and then I stopped!

This one had quite a few jaw-dropping surprises thrown in! I mean I can't even remember how many times I was just shocked! A character might do something that was surprising or you know one of those startling events would happen, ones that you don't see coming! Basically, this read was just freaking awesome! I am very glad the final book, Revolution comes out later this year in November. But sadden by the fact that it doesn't come out until November! The ending definitely leaves your jaw hanging open yet again and I am sooo looking forward to this one's conclusion! Jenna Black has done it again and wrote yet another amazingly, GREAT read!

Overall Rating 5/5 stars

  1. Wow, Jessica! This sounds fantastic! I've read a few of Jenna Black's books and enjoyed them but I hadn't heard of this series. I'll be sure to check it out.
